Rothwell was a sublime writer, his wit was unsurpassed. He played with words for comedy unlike other writers...line after line thru all the carry ons. Remarkable.
@@paulhugo1623 there was a video on YT about carry ons and mentioned this, they interviewed one of the censor guys and he said as long as they put sufficient gap between the words, they passed it
I guess tastes differ a lot. I believe this was made part of some '100 best films list'. Personally, though I really enjoy the Carry On series, I found this one of the weakest examples. Ironically, it's the only one that I actually saw in the theatre when it was first released, at the Picture House, Leicester. I was very disappointed then, and I've never taken to it. I saw Polanski's Macbeth at that same cinema. I thought that was pretty much rubbish too, although I've liked other things that Polanski did. This just seemed heavy-handed to me, and largely lacking in the cheeky charm that made the Carry On series appealing.
My most favourite moment of them all in Up the Khyber will *always* be the musical machine gun.
Its the record in the magazine that makes the scene so clever.
Me too! always. Only a couple of weeks ago I timestamped the scene in another video on here. And the RSM's "what the devil?!"
Nothing beats the “I seem to be a little plastered” line from Joan sims.
It’s the way Joan plays a drunk. Perfect voice pitch
I think her line “my word, he did not half hit that one, did he not?” Is fantastic too.
Except Bernie’s “ fachia off”
@@fegstachops6746 nice spelling, but I get your point

Fakir off! Best line in film.
Best carry on film ever. The gags are very funny.
Who would have thought The Khyber Pass looks exactly like Wales.
😂
As a kid, i thought this was up there with 'Zulu'and didn't quite understand what satire was.
How clever was rothwells writing...brother belcher-hell make a good buepar...😂😂😂
Rothwell was the key to the carry on success..the wit and wordplay was phenomenal.
'And up yours.'
I just can't help feeling sorry for the poor bloke!
I definitely think that the very first scene at the polo match is the best, sets the scene for the whole film.
It’s in the Pinewood garden.
"Fakir - Off".... surprised the censors let it pass.
they had to leave a slight pause between the words 😉
@@andygozzo72 indeed... but for the time, it is surprising.

On British TV re-runs they censor that bit out on now. What a prudish boring world we live in now.

Benedict Cumberbatch's mum is the Princess Jelly. Not a lot of people give two shits about that.
Not quite. It’s Wanda Ventham.
She’s come to right a great wrong
