The word occult means "hidden". Many people falsely think that it means evil. And yes in the true sense of the word it is occult knowledge, but not evil.
This song was part of my early childhood soundtrack, my mother played it for my sisters and I on cold winter nights and we and danced around the room by candle light, swaying scarves around our heads. She always claimed to be fearful of witch craft! 😆 Just now, 26 years later while performing the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram, this song came back to me and I had to listen to it! Lily = my great grandma. The only one in "the family" who liked me. I was the only one she gave money to on my visits to her, with the warning not to telly anyone about her doing so. Personally I wish she didn't but even when what she gave me was worth little it was the intent that mattered. The advice she gave me and the stories she told me still stick with me even 30+ years later. The main one being "if you can't hide it, decorate it". "Death and the afterlife" is a frequently reoccurring theme in her work, with at least one song on one of both of these topics on each of her albums if I remember correctly, and she tends to alternate between songs that suppose reincarnation ("All the Love," "The Morning Fog") and those that theorise about a permanent afterlife/heaven ("Blow Away" and "Moments of Pleasure"), which I suppose constitutes openness or at least uncertainty.

I learned the steps of the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentegram last night and was surprised when I came to the final part of the ritual, because I immediately thought of this song/video. I wasn't aware it was a traditional protection spell. I wonder if she is pagan or just sort of an open person in regards to spirituality.
I found the song! I had no idea there was a video of this tune, and I have been doing the 4 Arch-angle invocation of protection for so many years, about 30, I forget where it came from. In this version, it really really works! And those Angles, they do not get tired, in fact they are energized by helping us, and by our music and chants.
We all see the great depiction of the Arch Angels rising - dazzling - but this is the first time I noticed, at 3:37, some demons writing on the ground in pain.
Apparently she just opened her first 'live' show in 35 years with this track - walked on stage with a procession of backing singers and sang it. Was hoping she'd include this in the set list! Glad she didn't go for the more predictable 'RUTH' as an opener. Seeing her next week!!!
KateBushIsTheBest Well...by all accounts she seemed to enjoy the opening night's performance and was thrilled with the reception she got. Reviews were ecstatic too. Perhaps this might tempt her to travel further afield, especially given that her son is more or less grown up now. Roll on Tuesday (that's when I see her...) I will post a mini review here - whether people want to read it or not!
chulieho Well wait for the DVD which is surely coming! I found the show on the whole very good - but not great. However this may be my own fault. Read on... The opening track 'Lily' was performed wonderfully. She sounded great and the backing singers did a good job too. It was very atmospheric. King of the Mountain - a track I'd never really liked - really came over well 'live'. It rocked. However, I couldn't help thinking - if you hadn't toured for 35 years, would you include tracks such as 'Joani' or 'Top of the City' (as she did)? Don't get me wrong, Kate is my ultimate musical idol (as you can probably guess by my username). I'm old enough to remember when Wuthering Heights came out and I've always loved her. And I know Kate has the right to choose which tracks she performs 'live'. But for me those tracks were what we used to call album _fillers_ when they were originally released; I didn't warm to them 'live' either. Though I concede it's all subjective. Trouble is that meant other classic album tracks such as 'Night of the Swallow', 'Get out of my House' or any number of stronger album tracks from 'Never for Ever' were left out. I know her voice has lowered in key but I think she could have adapted them. Ninth Wave - a hell of a lot of effort went into her performance here and it worked well. But over-familiarity with the suite kind of dulled its effect for me. Again, I played those tracks to death so this is probably my problem. The dialogue in between songs (Bertie's character and his father) grated though. Others seemed to find it charming however. Sky of Honey was performed flawlessly. Beautiful vocals and presentation. Trouble is performing both suites (9th Wave and 'Honey') left little room for the rest of her back catalogue. And as others have noted, she didn't perform anything from her first four albums, which I found a bit self indulgent. However on the whole it was a good show. She sounded good and I realise I'm very lucky I got to see her. I'm going to be honest though; at times I was a little disappointed.
I love the whole The Line, The Cross & the Curve. Music and videos are amazing and I can't understand why some people still say something negative about it. Songs are full of emotion and video so brilliant!
This is where I was all night! And I heard the song in my head, and knew I must play it and find it as soon as I got back home! Didn't realize there was a video! Haven't heard Lily in ages, and under-appreciated the whole "Red Shoes" album. Double tripple etc. your delight whammy!
such brilliance. this had tears in my eyes. thanks for uploading. i have the album from when it came out, but i never saw this film of hers. such beauty throughout. beautifully put together and filmed.
She opened up a new way of expression as did Joni Mitchell with song structure. Kate is wonderful and can't wait for her new CD 'Director's Cut'. Genius
North South East And West - Gabriel, Raphael, Michael & Uriel in a circle of fire (protection from evil, demonic forces) Kate's lyrics are becoming more real by the day, a subtle hint to protect ourselves from the darkness and ignorance among us all.
as an artist she is my incarnation of Artemis/Hecate....to have knowledge/wisdom comes with a price ...i will always love her work.......wish i could meet her though..share thoutgs about life...
So THIS is Kate Bush! I never even heard of her, but almost every time I run a celebrity look-alike scan on one of my pics, she ends up in the results(though I don't quite see the resemblance), but by the pic they show of her, I thought she was a model. I would have never guessed. I actuly found this song by accident, searching for songs named "Lily". The video is chilling, but I'm addicted to the song.
Same here, but I really just loved the singles from the album. But my favourite is "You're the One." Never really gave Lily a chance but it is really great now that I give it a listen for the first time in about ten years.
Im pretty certain that casting a energetic circle for protection and then calling upon some form of spirit beings as guides and partners in spiritual-magickal, personal "Pathworking" exsisted long before Crowley...

To whom all things return
Unveil to us the face of the true spiritual sun

As we journey to thy sacred feet
Well I said
"Lily, Oh Lily I don't feel safe
I feel that life has blown a great big hole

"Child, you must protect yourself
I'll show you how with fire"
Gabriel before me
Raphael behind me

I will post a mini review here - whether people want to read it or not!

Well wait for the DVD which is surely coming!

I hope she visits California too and that you get to go and see her. And thanks for your thanks!
chulieho The love was palpable. Awesome evening.
Sending love & thanks to our beautiful mother crones✨💓✨
I love the whole The Line, The Cross & the Curve. Music and videos are amazing and I can't understand why some people still say something negative about it. Songs are full of emotion and video so brilliant!
To think after all this time and all those classics that this would turn out to be my favorite
One of the best songs from THE RED SHOES. By the way, Kate is a legend...i love her music.
One of my favourites I Love this, ❤❤❤❤
This is where I was all night! And I heard the song in my head, and knew I must play it and find it as soon as I got back home!
Didn't realize there was a video!
Haven't heard Lily in ages, and under-appreciated the whole "Red Shoes" album. Double tripple etc. your delight whammy!
one of the greatest songs ever!!!!!!!
such brilliance. this had tears in my eyes. thanks for uploading. i have the album from when it came out, but i never saw this film of hers. such beauty throughout. beautifully put together and filmed.
This song has the great kick. Like the rhythm and hook.
Why doesn't this have 1,000,000 views yet?
She opened up a new way of expression as did Joni Mitchell with song structure.
Kate is wonderful and can't wait for her new CD 'Director's Cut'. Genius
Kate is amazing. She is the best
Such a well written song.
North South East And West - Gabriel, Raphael, Michael & Uriel in a circle of fire (protection from evil, demonic forces) Kate's lyrics are becoming more real by the day, a subtle hint to protect ourselves from the darkness and ignorance among us all.
There is a reversal in the song, but that is because she was in the mirror universe for this song.
Genius
Oooh, I've never seen this before nor heard that album at all. Love this.
man, i can't listen to this song without tearing up.
So beautiful 😍
as an artist she is my incarnation of Artemis/Hecate....to have knowledge/wisdom comes with a price ...i will always love her work.......wish i could meet her though..share thoutgs about life...
A moonchild, greetings to you
Wonderful song
Kate Bush is everything!
I revisit this song periodically... so strong!
Such a lovely video.
All I can say is that if Kate is a witch, then bring it on witches, I'm up for it! :)
Its not just Kate but one of her brothers is highly intelligent and creative as well...its in the genes perhaps
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful Love You Kate For Ever!!
Aaaaaaaah I adore this just Magical! Nothing less from The Great Kate Bush ❤️💋🌹💏💞💖😽😻😺👌
I Love The Line the Cross and the Curve. Brilliant!
The red shoes mistery! Love it!
Lovely as always. Love Kate Bush. n.n
I never heard this before. Great unexpected treat. Thanks.
I'm 52 and had a massive crush on Kate around the age of 15. I also loved Lynsey de Paul too!
A different Kate as mentionned in the comments, but though another beautiful and loveable Kate (both in music and beauty)
Perfection is all I can say!!!
