    I love Kate Bush, she was too advanced for the 70s and Thank God her legacy is growing in these years!!!

    • @lena-xm6pg
      @lena-xm6pg 9 месяцев назад +5

      What are you talking about? She was a huge success in the UK and the rest of Europe in the 70s and really has been ever since. Wuthering Heights was her debut single and it was literally a no. 1 hit. All but one of her albums reached the UK Top 5 (at least one entered at no.1), and the only one that didn't still made the Top 10. And that's despite the fact that she only went on a single tour and then decided to never tour again.
      Sure, she wasn't as well-known in the States back then (don't think it was a focus either though) but even so, she was still nominated for multiple Grammy Awards during the 80s and 90s.

      I don't think she's advanced, the music is timeless or just transcends trends in music. It's not like music that came out after this all sounds like Kate Bush.

      What did you expect them to do? Mosh? It's not the sort of music to dance to; more one that takes you on an inward journey. That Wuthering Heights was #1 and she was on Top of the Pops somewhat disproves your assertion that most of them thought she would be a complete flop. She released WH when she was 19 and, as she says at the start, she's 20 when she did this performance. She was already insanely successful.
      Also, if you watch any Top of the Pops from the 1970s, you'll notice the crowds are nearly always very passive no matter how upbeat the music. Maybe a sign of the times, or maybe they were told not to dance.

    Serene, pristine and deranged, nobody should underestimate quite how shocking it was when the teenaged Bush emerged to the world with this haunting piano melodrama of her own creation. Casting herself as tragic heroine Cathy from Emily Bronte’s gothic romance, perhaps the reason so few pop songs are based on classic novels is that they’d have to live up to this.

    Some sort of bureaucratic bullshit involving the musician’s union is the reason the backing track is so weird. She wasn’t allowed to use her own backing track. Instead, the BBC orchestra did their own very rough approximation of the record. Judging from this, they possibly should have invested in a metronome for starters.

    I remember this exact performance like it was yesterday, watching it with my family and she's even better watching her now. My God what I'd have done for a girl like Kate; well I did and she turned out like Lorena Bobbit, if just we could turn time backwards and have another chance armed with the wisdom aquired with age. I'd just past my driving test when this came out and had a Vauxhall Victor 101, with a radio and lots of girlfriends. Great times and the majesty of Kates performance just sums up for me what was great and has become diminished with time.

      Lmao if u think music now is terrible you are very obviously missing a LOT of music. This is such a dumb statement people make all the time because they have nostalgia for their generation lol. There will ALWAYS be good, outstanding, creative music, you just have to find it.

    Thanks for showing this. What you say about live performance is not 100% true for the 70s and early 80s if you were a solo performer.
    Indeed when Kate Bush first appeared on Top of the Pops with Wuthering Heights she was required to sing live due to musician union rules. She produced a performance which she described as like watching herself dying as the BBC house band struggled with the complexity (time signatures and chord changes) of Bush's composition. As a 19-year-old singing the song live for only the second time (a few days after an appearance on German tv playing to a backing track) she just ploughed on but you can see it is definitely live.
    After 2 weeks the single had risen to number 5 and Kate returned to the show and took control. She decided to play at the piano (the only time she did so for a live performance of the song). Noel Edmonds was the presenter of the show and he later reflected how astonished he was as he watch this young stopping the band on several occasions as they again struggled to keep to the complex timings, Kate though was very charming about it all and it appeared these experienced musicians seemed more embarrassed that they could not keep up with the writing of a self-taught piano playing 19-year-old.
    At the end of it all, she produced what is probably the best fully live performance on Top of the Pops. It went straight to number 1.
