Of all the spartan fire-teams that died defending reach, the only fire-team that went down fighting that we all got attached to were those off noble team. But out of all of noble team's deaths, Six went down fighting without his helmet.
actually its a spartan tradition that if a spartan knows he or she is going to die they drop the helmet, the only ones who didnt where kat (shot to the head) and emile (over run by ZELOT elites) they never got the chance to lose it before they died but to drop the helmet is saying "let my memory live on" because of the helmets black box effect, the nural uplink in the back of the skull shows the suit when the wearer is dead so it loops back his final actions..quite sad really.
They go into cryosleep during slipspace travel. Also John had just saved Sgt. Johnson and his Marine squad from a Covenant raid on the ship he was one. John, Linda and one other Spartan (Been a while since I read the books) were all in space doing that. Then they got on board the Pillar of Autumn and jumped and ended up at the first Halo.

No, all of Reach save for the area around CASTLE base was glassed and those who survived were 5 SPARTAN-IIs, Dr. Halsey, and Vice Admiral Whitcomb. Plenty of other ships and ground forces escaped.

Not stating that 6 was the first Chief but Reach takes place before John even saw battle. If you look a little to the side in a cut scene on the last campaign mission when there is a camera view on Pillar of Autumn you see John in a some sort of tube still under devlopment

The land Noble Six's helmet was on was very clearly glassed after his death, the heat was radiating off the ground, not to mention the ring of plasma fire around the entire map. Pretty sure it's just that they focused on terraforming Reach, rather than some other, less important planets.

Noble 6 wasn't left to die, he/she chose to stay behind so the Pillar of Autumn could safely leave Reach.

They never did better than Reach. The sacrifice has never been show like that. Beautiful. Magic.
Reach did get glassed but 30 odd years later it was re terraformed making it a suitable habitat for life.
