  • In today's video I follow up on my last purchase I made for my own watch collection a few weeks ago. I share 5 things I love and 5 things I loathe about the iconic Rolex Explorer automatic luxury watch after a few weeks of wrist time (Ref. 114270 36mm). I also give my initial impressions during an unboxing of the legendary Tudor Pelagos with the in-house movement.

    I love that it's just a watch. Just so simple and discreet. When I see someone having this you know they buy the watch for what it is not only for the Rolex logo, because mainstream people don't know it's a Rolex. Im in love with the design and I'm in love with the movement. Probably my favourite Rolex. Great video Tristano!

    I've been watching for a short time but I have to compliment you on your ability to create a way for young people like me to be introduced to the hobby in an inviting and welcoming manner. I recently bought a Seiko 5 on Amazon for $60 and can't wait to keep expanding and enjoying my collection.

      I would love to see how your watch journey has progressed from the seiko 5?
      Mine started out with fossils for a few years, then citizen for awhile as well. Then Victoronix. Which was the start of my love for automatics. Then steinhart. Then oris aquis....and I just got my first omega. It’s a hobby that progresses. And before u know it, you’ll be buying a watch for 3K when u thought all along those people that did that were “stupid.”

    I bought the Pelagos last - the new one with the in-house moment. I actually went in to buy the blue one but at the last moment change my mind to the black. I've never looked back since. I was sold on the black Matt black finish giving extremely high contrast not to mention the added versatility of black.

    Love my 36mm Explorer. Whilst i agree that it's great with different straps, having had mine on NATO's, crocs etc.. I think that it just looks amazing on the Oyster and i keep it on that now. Very close to a perfect everyday watch.

      i am so far extremely far of ever buying a Rolex, if a ever do. But I really think the Explorer is the most beautiful watch there is. If I were to use a watch for the rest of my life, be damn sure I will buy the Explorer one and thats it. Despite some believing it is "boring" I love its conservative aspect and how it can be dressed up or down. Amazing watch.

    The font used for the numerals of the Explorer is Eurostile, designed in the 1960s by Aldo Novarese. It was meant to embody modernity, with rounded corners like TV screens... Funnily enough it is still very much put to use in science fiction films, because it still conveys modernity to this day. The police like it too. Apart from the Explorer Rolex has used Eurostile on the GMT Master II, the Yachtmaster, and the Explorer II. You can also find it on many sub-dials other watch brands.

    just got a new pelagos blue and the blue just makes me smile everyday. it's smooth and subtle yet is a real punch of color without being obnoxious. build quality is top notch and if you get a great deal like did then the value is unbeatable. movement has features that some rolexes don't have yet like the rotor bearings, 70 reserve etc. 2 things I would change is the 5 lines of text (although this stulidity seems to be inherfrom Rolex), and the crown is quite stiff to lock and unlock.

  • @mikec3454

    Many of the reasons you love your Explorer is precisely why I bought my OP36, blue "3,6,9" dial. I love the Explorer, but only the 36mm references. I was buying a watch to commemorate a couple of milestones so I wanted to buy a new watch with my name on the papers as this is an heirloom piece now. I also already own the BB36 so I thought the Explorer might be too redundant. I love my Oyster Perpetual, even more understated than the Explorer with the lack of large "Rolex" font and printed coronet on the dial.
    I ended up buying a 114060 a few weeks ago as well so now that is my tool watch :)

    Sir TGV, I am a massive fan of your channel. Subbed for half a year now. saw almost all your vids and I must say I'm hooked. Now I can't stop checking out other people's ww specially at work. I have a question: if I want to check out a ww that is worn on a wrist, are there certain etiquettes involved? I mean I don't want to strain my eyes spying on their wrists. Do you think it's acceptable to hold it, pop it on your wrist, ask how much they got for it? You said from one of your vids that it's just bad form to ask if a ww is fake or not, now that's one thing. Just came to my mind while driving back from work. Anyways thank you MORE POWER Sir TGV!

  • @petercallaghan4718
    @petercallaghan4718 7 лет назад

    Historical comment : Rolex Explorer was the watch Bond wore in Ian Flemings novels rather than the Submariner worn in the early films of the books. The watch looks much nicer on the wrist than it does on videos or in the box at dealers. Nice simple Rolex with the same movement as many non date Submariners, and 36mm version prices are rising as to find a really good little used one is getting more difficult.

    First of all, your channel made me appreciate my watches even more. Now in summer I really like the lume of the Pelagos. It charges really fast when it is sunny and when you go indoors the watch is glowing noticeable. My clasp locked up within one week of purchase (now 7 months old) and they replaced it. Recently they had to adjust the spring as it was running really slow. But all things were fixed very well by the Rolex dealer and although these issues were annoying, I really like the Pelagos as I really wanted a titanium watch by a great brand.

    After much research, I selected the Pelagos (in-house mvt) over the Seamaster PO 600m, the Sinn Uhren U2, and the Muhle Glashutte Pro Mare Chrono, and have been "over the moon" with it since. Put it on the blue stap to really make the color pop and distinguish it from my other diver. It indeed changes the watch's character, making it more informal looking; perfect for swimming, diving and any water sports one can throw at it. Plus, the rubber strap lightens the overall weight and makes wearing it super comfortable.
    Hope you enjoy your time with it and look forward to your review.
    Just don't put it on a NATO, okay? :)

    *warning* potential ruin if you love the blue pelagos, and an interesting way to solve it:
    I showed a picture of the blue pelagos to a non-watch geek friend, who said "hey, that looks like a blue poker chip!" Immediately ruined, right? After a while though, my thought process was that the color is so vibrant and the lume is so clean and white that yeah, of course it looks like a poker chip but i don't care because it still looks insanely awesome

    Another great video. One minor quibble. Calling the explorer an "entry level" Rolex belittles it. It happens to be the favorite Rolex of many folks who can afford whichever one they want.

      @theurbangentry  7 лет назад +2

      I could not agree more, I was more referring to its price. In a part of the video I cut out (otherwise it would of been 45 minutes!) I actually made clear what I mean, its allure and classy nature is punches higher then Rolex watch costing much more.
      Thank you,
      Best regards,

    I wondered what had happened to your Seiko SARB033. Ah, your wife is the culprit. It has become her watch. Now I understand.
    You have educated me to the simplicity, elegance, and versatility of the Rolex Explorer. I've never ever given this watch my attention. The watch certainly doesn't call to me. But, it's a nice watch. Can't be denied. You yourself state, TGV: "It's a wonderful watch!" I trust your taste and your judgement. I'll be the first to take your word for it. By the way, the Tudor Pelagos is an attractive watch. I loved the blueness of the watch. Very nice!

    As the guy below suggests, invite a NYPD cop onto the show and review their watch.. would be so cool. Pelagos is nice, great strap and buckle.. but really it should have Rolex on the dial. If you like the Explorer, you might like the Armida A6 (ETA movement) fantastic alternative for a fraction of the price.

    Surprised you kept the Rolex Explorer on the bracelet ahah :) Looking foward for the Pelagos review, don't know much about it
    Tristano for when more videos about lifestyle, other than watches? I understand with the growth of the channel you won't do it as much but once in a while (like once a month) would be nice!
    Keep up the good work!

      As for lifestyle videos, I did one not so long ago walking old Ernie boy, I have another one planned which I think you will really enjoy. I can't say too much ;-)
      Thank you,

    I love my Pelagos! I have the 25500TN, the ETA version. Tudor modified the hell out of that ETA 2824-2. It may not be COSC Certified, but it operates within COSC standards. Looks great on a leather Colareb. I absolutely love the blue color on the newer version. I've been thinking of selling mine and upgrading to the blue.

    If buying new is the explorer 1 or oyster 39mm or the air king worth buying or just go for a submariner or datejust?

  • @mellypro
    @mellypro 7 лет назад

    I have an Explorer myself (114270) and it is perfect choice for a one-watch person which I'm not :). Anyway, perfect watch and the 39mm version simply doesn't have the esthetics. I think it is because it is bigger but have still 20mm oyster bracelet so the dimensions of case vs. bracelet somehow feel better on the 36mm version.

    I don't think rolex does any anti-reflective coatings on any of their watches, sometimes it annoys me, other times I find that on some of my watches with the anti-reflective they seem to pick up more cruft and fingerprints.
    Also glad you like the inhouse blue pelagos, love mine

    I don't like the 39mm size of the (newer) Explorer, and I absolutely hate how dressy it looks. It could definitely benefit from having 200m water resistance. Other than that, it's a good watch.

    I bought the new 2016 Explorer as they finally placed a lume on the 3,6,9. The only critism I have with sapphire crystals are that they reflect and smudge like crazy. For some reason I hate the bracelet I can't get comfortable with it, even with the 5mm extension.

    An end game piece for me is the Patek Phillipe reference 5146 rose gold case and bracelet. I know it's a totally different universe between Rolex and Patek price wise, but if we're talking about the end game watch, I would like to hear if someone doesn't find it beautiful, it's as good in a formal occasion as it is in a casual.
