- We are diving into a little bit of classic and The Godfather was our first thought since it's one of the famous movies but we haven't seen it both! We were skeptical about the movie but oh boy...this movie proved us wrong! We were so caught up in it and we were glad that this is a trilogy!!!
we didn't even recognize Al Pacino...that's how dumb we were! 🤣

Nah. When he shot that cop and Virgil Sollozo. *That* was when he reached the point of no return.
Michael conducted this war, NOT like a mafia don, but like a military man. He used precise timing, brilliant strategy, and a militaristic approach to intelligence gathering and subterfuge. He essentially carried out a "shock and awe" campaign that left his enemies reeling.
This single day's events let all the other families know that the Corleone family was NOT weakened by the death of Vito. They all quickly realized that Michael was a leader to be respected, and sometimes feared.

Great reaction as always, but can I say that one thing I absolutely love is that you guys PAUSE THE MOVIE when you're discussing things. It's great, because so many reactors ramble over critical scenes in films, or while they're trying to remember where an actor is from. You guys pause, discus, then resume, like sensible humans
the pausing is a must! it's too good to not discuss it and see if we miss something in the story!

What I think about Carlo's situation is this: He married Connie thinking he would be given a powerful position since he is the Godfather's son in law. He wasn't given that, so he got angry. He took it out on Connie because he knew her parents were from the old ways of doing things, they would not interfere between a man and his wife. After Sonny took control, he impulsively beat Carlo in public. This was a critical mistake. Barzini and the others obviously heard about it and that's how they came up with their plan to kill Sonny. Barzini approached Carlo and got him to beat Connie again on a certain day. They had their gunmen in position and waiting for him. In this movie, and the other Godfather movies, you will see again and again how these gangsters study each other for weaknesses and use those weaknesses against them. Sonny's weakness was his temper. Another example is when Sonny spoke up at that meeting with Sollozzo. That told Sollozzo and the other families that Sonny liked the deal. That's when they started planning to kill Sonny's father so Sonny could take over the family and make the deal. That plan only failed because they were unable to kill his father and only wounded him.
You mentioned Carlo .
The man who played Carlo in the movie was connected . He was not an actor, however got the part.
Very interesting man, who has led a cherished life, a likeable man. Had a fling with Marilyn Monroe.
I don't think so, he got his azz kicked by Sony an d he wanted to get rid of Sonny, hopping that would help him move up in the ranks maybe, but mostly because Sonny kicked his azz. He was hot headed like Sonny.

@@MrRondonmon Knowing what a dumbass Carlo was, do you really think it's more believable that Carlo used Barzini to kill Sonny instead of it being Barzini who used Carlo? Barzini is smart enough to have become the head of a major crime family. Carlo is smart enough to have done what to prove his strategic skills? That's why at the end Michael asks who approached you. He doesn't ask who did you approach.
@@flibber123 That wasn't the point, you asked WHY he betrayed the family, not if he approached Barzini. Of course Barzini heard he git his azz kicked and said, he's steaming, we can get him to betray Sonny.
Fun fact: Lenny Montana, who played Luca Brasi, really did work for the mafia, the Colombo crime family. The Godfather was his first movie appearance, being cast cast right there on the set when director Francis Ford Coppola saw how big and intimidating he looked.

Fun fact, in the scene where he is talking to Don Corleone, he was stammering and having a hard time because he was terrified doing the scene with the legendary Marlon Brando. The Director liked it so much they wrote and filmed the scene with him Practicing what he was going to say and Michael explaining to Kate who he was etc
@@RobwLPOC Fun Fact #2: To ease Lenny's situation and get him to relax, Brando printed "Fuck You" on his tongue so Lenny would break-up laughing, re-shoot the scene in a more relaxed manner. It worked.
Fun Fact #3: Alex Rocco, who played Moe Greene, was a member of the Winter Hill Gang in Boston and was a contemporary of Whitey Bulger. They were a prominent gang in the Irish Mafia but welcomed Italians as associates.
You guys did very well following the story and all the characters. So many characters, can be quite confusing for many in the first watch.
About 50% of Godfather fans think Godfather II is even better. I can’t decide, they’re both perfect.
I had some trouble at first because where I'm from I'm not familiar with Italian names so I kept conflating them. Ha ha if they'd been called Johansen and Olson and Skalland and Gustafson and Thorvaldson then no problemo.

I was about to comment this! I love how well they followed the movie and paid attention to details that most of us miss the first time watching.
Part II is nothing compared to this movie but it's still really, really good.
Honestly, I kinda see them as one long film. I can never start Part I and NOT follow with Part II immediately after it.
Same way with the LOTR films. I must see them all in one sitting.
Now, with Part III, even though it is weaker and has many flaws, I personally like it. It still has many iconic moments.
But I agree with Coppola's assessment that it should've never been called "The Godfather Part III" but rather "The Death of Michael Corleone."
It is a epilogue, and separate from the others in a way.
Michael had this done during the Baptism not because he needed an alibi ( it's not as if he would personally be doing the killing) but because none of the families would suspect a fellow Italian mafia leader to order such a bit while the ceremony was taking place.

indeed! i was amazed too! in fact i believe Michael got to a level that has no respect for none of them or God either... he is very dangerous but i am afraid he would lose it for himself too
The conjoining of the baptism with the revenge slaughter was heavily symbolic. It was not merely an alibi or a diversion.
The Godfather is in a small class of film that I consider to be perfect. Your joke analogy is perfect to explain the difference between older films and newer ones. Movies in the 70s, 80s and 90s (and even ones before that) really paid attention to detail and were about telling a story, just like a methodical joke that has a lot of detail, so when you get to the punchline, the result is a big payoff just like the ending of a great scene or film. The beginning and middle of the scene/movie is just as good as the ending because the writers and director took their time getting there and filled it with a lot of depth. But modern movies are missing the meat of the story, so that everything feels like a punchline. Every other line characters say in movies now, regardless of genre, feels like constant jokes and sarcasm. There's no meat to the scenes or depth to the characters. When every character is sarcastic, they don't feel unique or real. They feel like writers' puppets and sounding boards. Also, there are actually some early 00s movies that are definitely great, too. But somewhere around the late 00s, films lost their individuality and many of them sadly started feeling interchangeable.
very well put! there is so many new movies that i haven't watch due to trailers who shows too much... and makes me feel that i already watched the movie.. or bcuz i had a big feeling how it would be.. and when i gave it a chance i was right.. it was just like that. now when it comes to movies like GodFather... oh boy. dont put a big table filled with food next to me cuz i will eat everything!! it will make me feel is not a movie.. but a story that i am watching through a magical invisible glass that nobody can see me! hahaha

I laugh at "The Godfather" being called an "old movie." Old movies to me are the ones made when the studios ran everything and cranked out a movie a week.

Johnny Fontane was based loosely on Frank Sinatra & the movie which he 'allegedly' got due to his 'mafia' connections was 'From Here to Eternity' (1953). Sinatra won the Oscar for the Best Supporting Actor for this movie & his career was revitalized.
I like how Sonny and Clemenza laughed at Michael when he said he’d kill them…like Michael wasn’t in WW2 and had definitely saw some shit worse than both of them.
He was awarded a Silver Star for his service in The Pacific. He most assuredly saw some shit.
And not just in WWII, but in the Pacific, where it was exceptionally intimate and brutal.
That bothered me "Hello you baby bro was in the military he saw some things that would make what they do look like child's play. Michael's no stranger to killing he was trained to not only kill but how strategize & here Sonny & Clemenza are laughing at Michael like he never even fired a gun in his life. Surly their father would've told them Michael is just as capable of being a killer than they are it's just Michael chose to to get involved. That is until they Made an attempt on his dads life & killed his 1st wife than Michael decided to act & become what he hated. As for his sister in the end she's probably thankful her brother had her husband killed he was beating her after all. I learned in a documentary about this movie Connie's husband was bribed or told to beat Connie.
It's funny because when I was watching the film, I at first found it surprising that Michael killed Sollozo and McCluskey in the restaurant with no proper trauma over what he'd done. But then it made sense that as a soldier in WW2, killing wasn't anything new for Michael. All that made him hesitate this time was that the killing was supposedly 'illegal' and in a public environment.
It's an interesting question the film raises- is the organised, illegal crime of the mafia not too disimilar from that of the so-called 'legal' governments? The issue is commented on again during the exchange between Michael and Kay, where he makes the point that world leaders also have enemies killed through a buffer of command similar to that of the mafia.
'In 5 years the Corleone family is going to be completely legitimate'- Michael
@@Red-Brick-Dream Michael was in the Marines so, yes, in the Pacific he saw comrades and enemy soldiers chewed up in great numbers trying to take certain Islands like Iwo Jima.
Hope you realised that Johnny was Frank Sinatra. The movie he got was From Here To Eternity and it did make him a super star!! Godfather 2 is also wonderful.
He wasn't Sinatra but he was loosely based on him.

@@Ben-bb7mi the biography about Sinatras mother basically explains the Italian neighbourhood they all grew up in, in NY, which is well detailed in Godfather 2. He was also a great God Son. When they wanted him to sing at the casinos in Vegas, he was there like a shot and brought his friends along too!

You're right. The writing of this screenplay was other worldly. The editing was also incredible. Part 2 is special too. Part 3, not so much.

Godfather 2 is also a wonderful movie, easily (or almost) the equal of the first movie. And in this movie you will see that the "easy going Godfather" wasn't so much easy-going as he was building his empire. Wonderful reaction! Subscribed! You are two beautiful young people!

You also really dissected the 5 families meeting, and figured out how the Don knew who was behind his hit...AND....most other reviewers didnt catch you caught: you knew it was the HEADS of all the families being killed that day.
HERE is some interesting background from the book:
Sonny was the most feared city fighter in New York. Years ago, he and his father went to war and Sonny singled-handedly almost won the war with swift brutality. Not strategy.....but horrific and fast violence.....he father provided the strategy.
SO....when the Don was hospitalized, Sonny did what he did best....lose his temper and go to war. And he was winning. IF the Don didnt recover soon enough, there would no longer be any enemies because Sonny is in the process of wiping out every single one of them. Sonny isnt smart enough to know that war isnt good for business: he's an animal.
As a result, Barzini had one desperate chance: figure out a way to kill Sonny before it's too late. And that's when Sonny made a mistake: he lost his temper and beat Carlo in PUBLIC and WITHOUT bodyguards. In public, Barzini saw this and hatched a plan. Humiliated Carlo was only too happy to betray the man that humiliated him and left him in a puddle in the street.

Sonny had no control when he was angry... that's what got him killed.. he could have done it differently with Carlos...
Vito had a more respectable approach on the other hand... now Michael... well Michael doesn't match any don or mafia style..
i believe his style is copied from the war directly! he isn't negotiating like his father.. or intimidating like his brother.. but lure the pray and take it out without them even knowing what the heck happened.
the only times when he like to confront the target or pray is if they belong to the family

The sad reality, is that Don Vito was a family man who accumulated power to provide safety and justice to those he loved.
Michael, accumulates power for the sake of power.
@@MJoy4FunYou are right about Michael. As a soldier going to war, he was trained to kill without hesitation or remorse to achieve his objectives. It is easy to conceive that what he saw and what he did during battle made him a hard man detached from emotion. What made him a hero during the war was exactly what made him an effective "Godfather".

a tidbit about Carlo's death...in the book, death by garrote (choking) is considered more painful and more PERSONAL. Carlo killed MIke's older brother. And you can tell by the way Sonny talked to Mike (holding his face after the hospital, hugging him), that they were close. So Mike had Carlo killed while he and EVERYONE watched. And you can see for Carlo....it was not quick.
another tidbit from the book about Tom Hagan. Vito told Michael to fire Tom as consigliere because Vito gave his word to the Families that "**I** would not be the one to break the peace we made today." Everyone knows Tom is Vito's right hand, so if he was also Michaels right hand, everyone would assume Vito broke his word and told Tom to tell Mike to kill everyone.
Vito was such a far thinking man that his plan all along after Sonny got killed was to bring Michael home, enact his vengeance THROUGH Mike, then retire to his garden.
But for Vito's plan to work, he has to make peace to buy himself time to get everything ready. During wartime, there'd be NO WAY to get access to all 5 familes, and for the plan to succeed you had to kill all five at the SAME TIME, because one at a time, they'd figure out the obvious revenge killing and stay inside and get harder to kill.
Pulling out Tom and "running" to Vegas makes his enemies off-guard about his true plans to avenge his son and re-take control of the city.
Watching your reactions is like going to a movies with a good friend. Not just a friend by chance (like a co-worker or neighbor) but a real friend with the same perspective, which is more rare and more true.
When we both see the same movie and understand the same underpinnings, its a rare thing.

Your comparison of old movies with current ones is exactly right on. I feel so lucky to have grown up in those days enjoying all those great movies. This film came out the same year I graduated from high school.
Yeah, his analogy was spot on. I grew up on a lot of these movies, too, and didn't realize at the time how special and timeless they would end up being. I always thought movies would always be like The Godfather and all the entertaining movies from the 80s and 90s. I was wrong! lol
thank you!! if you can spot some difference... our subs aren't big compared to other reactors.. but they grew cuz of quantity.. we like to take our time and really put our souls into it.. dunno if they are good or bad.. but comments like this makes us feel we are doing a decent job. and yes old movies were filled with Culture and Meaning. newer movies seem to give us a feeling to know how they gonna end up bcuz of the same pattern they follow... action, comedy, drama, the change, action again.. rescue and the end.. there is nothing in between... there is some exceptions ofcourse

And another is "Casino" (1995), both with Robert DeNiro and Joe Pesci. I'll be looking for your Godfather part 2. And you can trust me on blown brain circuits... they will reconnect! Mine did. Watch Godfather 2 it's even better, and then watch Godfather 3 (The director's cut) which just released which is not as good as the first two but still a decent movie.
Really good reaction. Godfather and Godfather II are in the top ten films ever I think most directors, film critics and movie buffs will agree. But personally my favourite Coppola films are the ones he followed them up with -- 'The Conversation' and 'Apocalypse Now.' Both were highly personal projects for him.

The Good the Bad and the Ugly is a Clint Eastwood western but its also directed by an Italian so the same vibe is in his films, there's a trilogy with Clint and they are classics like you are wanting

The Don’s sons all had part of his personality, but they were all missing something that made it so that even combined, they would never fully equal their father. They were all defective versions of Vito - this is more of a compliment to the Don than an insult to the children.
Something happens early in the movie that's easy to overlook. In the meeting with Solozzo, Sonny acts like he's in favor of the deal. After the meeting, Vito scolds Sonny for it, but it's too late. Solozzo heard what Sonny said , and believes that he could make a deal if Vito were out of the way. This sets off the whole chain of events.
I think she picked up on that.
I thoroughly enjoyed your appreciative and intelligent reaction to this classic movie. This was the last movie that my old hometown movie theater showed before it closed down, and I'm glad I got to see it on the big screen.

It is the Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg movie "The Terminal." You might also like to look into "The Freshman" which stars Marlon Brando playing an actor who strongly resembles The Godfather. It is a great comedy. Keep up the good work.

@@cflournoy1529 Absolutely. In my opinion, The greatest weakness of the Reaction Video genre is the film selection process. I understand the desire to maximize ones audience by giving them what they want, but that strategy is terribly flawed. It results in the most popular films being reacted to to death, while a hundred times as many deserving films go unwatched. Hopefully the genre will evolve.

You just watched one of the relatively few perfect movies. Perfect cast, perfect plot, perfect writing and perfect cinematography. One the 5 greatest movies ever made, and The Godfather II is even better.

Honourable mentions to American Beauty, Schindlers list, Casino, Inglorious Basterds, Reservoir dogs, the Godfather, saving private Ryan, Forrest Gump, Once upon a time in America,
The way you followed the plot and the mindset of the characters is incredible; most people need a couple of re-watches to get the gist of it. Great reaction.

DEFINITELY subscribed. And as far as older movies, I love them. Obviously you should watch what you want, and you want to do a mix of stuff, but definitely hit the older movies from time to time, as old as you want to go. And definitely the dramas of the 70s were particularly outstanding (One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest with Jack Nicholson, Dog Day Afternoon with Al Pacino, Network with Faye Dunaway, The Conversation with Gene Hackman, The Man Who Would Be King with Michael Caine and Sean Connery - just to name a few. You would do great reactions to all of those.) Anyway, LOVED this reaction!

Since you guys loved this movie you now MUST read the book. There were so many components that weren't in the movie. For example, Luca Brazzi's sheer brutality and *TRULY* evil nature was hinted at in the movie but really detailed in the book. Even The Don himself was afraid of him!

When he was a cop he killed a violent pimp named Wax Baines who was in the process of slashing a little girl. Neri accomplished this by shattering Baines' skull with his flashlight; he was later convicted of voluntary manslaughter. Tom Hagen and Peter Clemenza saw in Neri's record a parallel to Luca Brasi, Vito Corleone's previous enforcer, and arranged for his release before he served any prison time. Michael, appealing to Al's sense of loyalty and Sicilian roots, recruited him into Clemenza's regime. He "made his bones" soon afterward, and eventually became Michael's chief lieutenant and most loyal ally.

a guy who raped his child was waiting for appeal in the court.. but the case was stalling due to lack of evidence, even though the neighbors were prime witnesses of that case... now the guy wasn't imprisoned but the father lost patience and killed him by crushing his balls and make his brain go out or something... he was sentenced to life in prison.. but the people of Ukraine protested and the law authorities were afraid of large riots, and free the Father.. now Ukraine has amoung few countries in the world.. death sentence for child rape... but the west don't talk about this cuz they are afraid... bcuz themselves are pedos

Such a tragic thing that little girl had to endure but I'm sure glad her Father tore that parasite limb from limb and god bless the people of Ukraine for standing up for her and him. In "The Godfather" that's the world Neri found himself in as a cop and he knew he could never live in that world. He needed to live in a world where there was REAL justice and that's what he found with the Corleone family.

I have another old movie for you. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof with Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman. It is older, from 1958, but it is a story of a wealthy family of cotton farmers in Mississippi and the transition of power between brothers when the father is diagnosed with terminal cancer. I think you will find it captivating also.

CONTENT... I'm wondering if many current movie writers have ever read a good book... Now we have Comic books adaptations and not all are good, Boom, Boom, Bang, Bang, omnipotent beings, alternate universes, political social messaging, all fun with brains turned off, but is that most of what's left? Captiviting stories based on REAL human behavior, there must be good stories out there to adapt from or be inspired, but NO, we want a 1 billion gross and superheroes provide that? Been watching for 50 years, what we have gained in technology doesn't make up for bullcrap content, film art has been replaced by mostly uninspired drivel, blame the companies and lazy wrirers, profit over quality is now the norm, what a shame...
The main trivia: the studio tried hard to fire Al Pacino due to his "minimalist style," but the Director won the Oscar for screen play for Patton; therefore Coppola had the authority to keep him. Btw the studio nearly fired Coppola too!
Vito was from the 'old guard' of doing family business and the other Heads were looking to change business with the times, and it got him killed almost. But 'war' between them is always inevitable anyway because of greed and ego - you're going to step on toes eventually. The script and cast is just brilliant laying it all out in one tremendous film.

I thought this was an excellent reaction. You’re right I think movies made in another era have a different depth to them but it is hard to figure just what exactly that is. I think Joy described it perfectly in there’s just more Magic in those old ones. One from the same time period you may want to check out is Dog Day Afternoon it stars Al Pacino and the man who plays his brother Fredo in The Godfather. It’s a crime movie that was socially ahead of its time.

Looking forward to part 2. I wouldn't bother with part 3. It's just not in the same level. Godfather 2 is perfect and a beautiful production. Part 1 was actually pretty low budget. Francis had a lot more $ and creative stroke for part 2 and it shows.
I've loved this movie since it came out and was so happy to see a younger couple like you appreciate it too. A great reaction. You really understood the film. Like others have said you should watch the sequel, Godfather II. It's just as good if not better. As for other classic films watch Casablanca, a black and white film from the early 1940s with Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. Like the Godfather it's considered one of the best movies ever made. And then for a change try Airplane! from 1980. It is hilariously silly and don't call me Shirley.

The house in Long Beach where the Corleone's lived in the movie is about 3 blocks from my house and the toll booth on the Loop Parkway where Sonny was killed is about 3 miles away It was torn down years ago though .

Would be WONDERFUL if you reacted to my No.1 movie. Spartacus-A true Classic. VERY astute observation on today's jokes vs. jokes told through the SPOKEN WORD. Anybody can get a cheap laugh w/props like tossing water or a pie in the face, but TRUE and more difficult comedy is SPOKEN. The greatest comedy team that EVER accomplished this was The Marx Brothers. Groucho, Harpo, Chico, and Zeppo.

You also said Michael is more sinister than the father or Sonny. You're right again. He's as close to something evil as we see in the movie.
And he's SMART too. Ruthless, smart, conniving, cunning, charming when need be....a Dangerous combination.
Sonny had at least a little bit of a heart.
Michael has none.
He says he does it all for family....but there's more to it. A darker part of him..perhaps from the losses he's experienced..especially his first wife.
You guys HAVE TO watch The Godfather II and review it.

They got it. Nowadays movies are just the special effects, in the old times they had to rely on the story. It looks simpler, simplistic, even MINIMALISTIC in comparison with movies today. But it is much better. Even the cheap shootout movies and blaxplotation movies had a story.

i agree...the old movies are just good story telling. Today's movies is bad or lazy storytelling with high tech cgi and they try to compensate the bad writing and bad story with bids of comedic reliefs and long choreographed fight scenes and most of all nudity. today's movies the dialogue's are cringe or corny and just edited in a way that is not encaging ...but these old movies even the way the camera angles and some scenes are shot just masterful, for example the beginning of this movie it began with the undertaker talking about America and the camera slowly pans out, the ending where Kate watches as all the gang bosses pay respect to micheal as Al Neri slowly closes the door on Kate. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, that last shoot out scene to me is one of the best ever in cinematic history..no dialogue needed, just good music and wide panoramic view of the three gunman standing in the large circle....they just don't make good movies like that anymore
Johnny Fontane played by 50s crooner Al Martino was based on Frank Sinatra, the film part Johnny wants is like Sinatra's role in From Here to Eternity, that film did well and resurrected Sinatra's career, I think he got an Oscar for best supporting actor.
Don't know if someone said it already but the part of Johnny Fontaine was based on Frank Sinatra. Always was rumors about Sinatra being closely associated with the Mob.
The deleted scene they catch the guard that carbombed his wife and cook him in his family's restaurant pizza oven..

Congratulations on watching arguably the best movie ever made.
Oranges are a subtle element in the Don's life. He is shot while buying Oranges, he uses one to frighten his grand child and then dies after. In part 2 a young Don can be seen looking over fruit and being given Oranges by the fruit seller. It's a small thing but I have always found it interesting.
My favorite scene is when Michael and Enzo the baker pretend to have guns in front if the hospital, to scare the hitmen. Enzo is shaking so bad he cannot light his cigarette, so Michael lights it for him. Then Michael looks at his own hand, its not shaking at all, and he knows right there. Exsoldier, business student in college, and nerves of steel; he has everything he needs to be the Don. It's a cool moment.

I feel they went the extra mile to capture the 1940s/50s era, or at least the rose-tinted version of it. It's iconic.

It took me at least 3 viewings to start getting all the little details and subtleties that make the film so briliant so I really have to congratulate you for how focused on the storyline both of you were, this is indeed the best reaction I've seen to my number one film... and I cant wait for your take on the second one.

Wow, nice review. Like others have said, I really enjoyed the way both of you were truly invested in the movie and paused when have a conversation with each other. I subbed because you said you might start watching older movies. I look forward to that. Godfather II is as good if not better than the first, you must check it out. Also, another recommendation from me is Casablanca, This is a movie I did not think I would like (i'm not into romance movies that much), but wanted to watch because of all the memes and sayings that come from the movie. I must say that after watching it, it is now one of my favorites and I rewatch about once a year now.

One thing that's important to remember is that there are truly great films being made today. It's just that blockbusters saturate the market and often push other films out of sight.
There are always great films in every decade. None of them feature superheroes.
