The drummer was John Blackwell, who sadly passed away at the age of 43 in 2017, he also played with Cameo, Patti Labelle, D'Angelo and Justin Timberlake. Rhonda Smith on bass, Renato Neto on keyboards, dutch sax player Candy Dulfer plus the legendary Maceo Parker (also on saxophone) who used to play with James Brown, Parliament/Funkadelic. Those are the ones I recognise right away. Prince was my alltime favourite artist, got to see him live 10 times , and he NEVER disappointed. 🤩
They said minimal (I guess you were reading the Wiki) because the original, the album version, was just that: lead vocals and backing vocals, a sampler synthesizer, electric guitar and a drum machine. All performed by Prince. The inspiration for the lyrics was the national and international situation, to society, like reading the newspaper headlines: AIDS, cold war, poverty, gangs, Star Wars (not the movie, but the Strategic Defense Initiative), etc. In other words: the B Side of the Eighties.
His band was the beginning of the NPG band. And him talking about die from a disease with a little name is referring to AIDS which came out 2 years after this song. Prince was so ahead of the time. Please check out Prince and Sheila E at the Alma Awards!! Pure fire 🔥
Loved your reaction! Thanks so much for watching this performance! The band is the same as the one you saw doing Shhh (I know you actually watched this performance first though). The album version is definitely more minimalistic. I always love hearing the genres Prince songs get put into. He is without genre. They should really just create a new genre and call it “Prince” 😂 Thanks again! Hope you really are enjoying this Prince journey because I’ll be sending more requests for sure 💜💜💜
Haha It was really awesome to check out. Someone else requested a song for both me and chai to listen to actually (it has to wait until later this month because of how our schedules line up), and someone else requested a song that is going through a copyright dispute right now. I'm sensing a pattern with Prince music videos
Please react to Prince "its gonna beautiful night live" please. It's a MUST see performance! & i hope she is there again becuz it's one of those performances that would be so lit with two people! nice suprises in their too. You wont regret it. I'm happily subbed 🤗
I'll add it to the list. I'll see what I can do. It's hard matching up schedules when everybody I react with lives in different parts of the country, and sometimes out of the country
New sub! Thanks for reminding me about this performance. I am a fan(fam?) since about 1980, saw Prince 5x in concert. Could absolutely control the audience, as you can see from this performance. If you want a child-friendly Prince song, try "Starfish & Coffee." Cute, catchy little song. He even performed a version of it on The Muppets.
Prince played 27 instruments. He played ever instrument on his first 4 albums. This is a jazz version of the song. The best live version is her. ruclips.net/video/1XXkbGsNY4k/видео.htmlsi=WdfihdaYhSay7pSP
These are players he used to play with all the time that have kept the music going! I recognize John Blackwell on drums….that’s definitely Candy Dulfur on sax. Legend Maceo Parker on sax too! It’s kinda blurry for me but probably Rhonda Smith on bass and Chance playing keys. Greg Boyer was on trombone. I can’t really see the rest but can take a closer look later

in france a skinny man died of big disease with a little name, by chance his girlfriend came across a needle and soon she did the same....sign o times was the first Billboard top 10 tens to mention the hiv/AIDS pandemic, also noteworthy because he highlighted straight people instead of gay men. the track was written after prince read a copy of fhe la times where the articles covered aids, the challenge explosion and the raise of gang violence. the album version is very stripped down. he had always had an interesting mic that looked gun like that evolved over time to be an actual gun in his d&p and love symbol era. Prince (vox, guitar), John Blackwell (drums), Rhonda Smith (bass), Renato Neto (keyboards), Chance Howard (keyboards, vox), Mike Scott (guitar), Greg Boyer (trombone), Maceo Parker (saxophone), Candy Dulfer (saxophone), Mike Phillips (saxophone)

Wow, he got to play with so many artists. There was so much talent here
I ❤ Prince & that song is awesome 👌 Thank you 😊
Empty Room/Elixir live in Montreux 2009
Yes this is a great performance too!!
That one has been added to the list

There was a lot happening in the 80s in the media. It's a fantastic song too
My jam!
I think u would enjoy "The Cross " live from Prince...from the sign o times Era. Sooo good!
I'll add it to the list

So the reference to AIDS, was it starting to happen when the song was written but no one knew what it was? Was he predicting the future?

@@AceofBadeReacts ok 😊
The album version is minimalistic.
Prince had many minimal tracks. The studio version of this one. Also, Kiss, When Doves Cry, and others.
True, but compared to When Doves Cry, this one is much more minimalistic

He is incredible. I'll add it to the list. I can't remember if he added that song to the Piano Medley I reacted to or not
@@AceofBadeReacts Also a song off this album called Play in the Sunshine is a very upbeat song that kind of has a childlike playful melody
Michael Jackson was known sometimes as the "Prince of Pop". The artist "Prince", is his real name.
I always thought Michael Jackson was the King of Pop
I love this song

Incredible to learn that many instruments
The band was his 20 aughts version of NPG.
Wow
The original version is minimalistic. The audience is 100 percent into it , Prince always left you with a dropped jaw.
It's great, especially when you change the genre
Sounds very much like an arrangement from the era where he was performing at the Montreux jazz festival. Maybe that would help with the line up.
JJLovesPrince mentioned it was the same lineup that was in the Shhh reaction

Prince shouldn't be requested. It's an obligation.

NPG is the name of Prince Band 😅
This is very different from the original version. Not great as a showcase for the song. It’s a bit all over the place.
I mean if this wasn't good, I can't imagine what the original is like because I thought this was amazing
It's a cultural thing. Growing up with Jazz, Funk and R&B, this performance is groovy and funky! Love it! Sorry that you don't get it.
