The video is from the Granada TV show appearance and the audio is from the Guildford Civic Hall 1972. There is no other live footage available of the original ELO lineup including Roy Wood. It would be almost impossible to get exact sync with the video and audio. The most important thing is to share this historical recording. I think it's better than having just a still picture and having the moving video of them performing gives you an idea of how it felt to be at this concert.
Roy Wood was an extremely talented man (well, when I say was, it could be is, I don't know if he's dead or not). I have no idea why Lynne let him leave or fired him or whatever. But he was 1/2 of the talent in ELO.
This was in the beginning a very bold experiment. I believe some of the audience were kind of shocked when they heard this kind of music ! I like almost averything ELO has done but I really admire these early days when the main thing was music not aiming to the commercial success.
One of my all-time favorite songs, but that was one rough performance. Somewhat surprising, given Jeff Lynne's production perfectionism. But it's fun to see just what dingalings they were back in the day.
This clip, despite the poor sound quality, really shows what early ELO was all about, combining classics with rock'n roll. Perhaps they were too ahead of their time and as someone else remarked the technology available didn't allow them to show their true power. Of course when Roy Wood left the group changed direction somewhat. Thanks for this clip, an interesting piece of musical history
@@groundhog713 Mike was actually killed when a huge bail of hay weighing one tonne rolled down a farmers field, it leapt over a dry stone wall and landed on Mike's van which was driving past the field. Mike and his van were crushed by the weight of the bail, unfortunately Mike was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
I think this was recorded on a smuggled in mono cassette recorder, that would explain the poor sound quality. There was a bootleg cd of the entire Guildford concert for sale on eBay about ten years ago. I contacted the seller and told him he shouldn't be selling crap like that on eBay, his reply was "I do it to put food on the table for my kids". There are legal ways of providing food for ones kids, selling bootleg cd's isn't one of them.

Fantastic musician Bill Hunt on French Horn. Also brilliant keyboardist and no slouch on bass either. have been very lucky to have played alongside him a few times.
the drummer set the tempo I really think that night he threw off everything those double beats on the bass drum was unnecessary and then you couldn't hear the bass drum very weird all a round but that's just me .
I was there at the Guildford Civic Hall gig. Such a shame that they didn't have any film of the concert. Seen them twice since. Both recorded on film! Magical band live and on record. Cheers for the great music guys. 🎸🎻🎼
Thank you for posting. I was ten when this single was released in the UK. I liked it then and I still think it's the best ELO song. Woody is beginning to look out of place, but, is that only with hindsight, knowing the history of the band. Was he actually looking out of place at the time? On some performances, you can see JL give him a kind of 'look', if you get my meaning. I notice Bill Hunt had the headphones on that always seemed seemed to be around during the late days of The Move and early ELO.
Wow I just love this band! This was indeed the beginning of a bold experiment! And like all bold experiments, have to go through some phase of growing pains While they’re finding themselves finding their sound their style their image all of it good on you Jeff! And all of the players who passed through the hallowed halls of E L O over the decades!
I bet it sounded amazing to be there live. The performance simply couldn't have sounded that overdriven in person. It's a shame it hasn't been cleaned up and remastered. The difference between this and the studio master tracks for the album are so different, this would definitely be worth the effort to polish, put back together and released.
Quite appauling, but ELO were so experimental in their early days that it is totally forgivable. Thankfully they stuck with it to become one of the finest, and most underrated, bands of all time
I love ELO from the 70s when I first heard them play. I still love Jeff Lynne and ELO but I still go back videos of 70s. I can’t help it they are musical geniuses.
It's great to see this early line up in action! Footage of something just beginning, later to become big, is often raw, if it exits at all. I disagree with the criticisms and applaud the effort made in sharing this. Thank you!
It´s kind of strange that Roy Wood was much more known in the public in 1971- 72 than Jeff Lynne. When the first ELO album was released the critcs said : Roy you really did it this time ! Though Jeff wrote even more songs for early ELO than Roy.
I don't find it strange at all, 10538 Overture was Jeff Lynne's first charting single, by 1972 Roy Wood had written nine top ten singles for The Move, Roy was obviously at the top of his game and Jeff was learning fast. Roy came up with the idea of Electric Light Orchestra in 1968 when he was the sole song writer for The Move, Jeff was struggling to have a hit record with The Idle Race at that time, unfortunately Jeff had no commercial success with The Idle Race eventhough his songs were excellent and top Radio 1 DJ's John Peel, Kenny Everett and Brian Matthew were self confessed Idle Race fans.

Love the song; I don't mind that this sound quality is off, it is just so cool to see them! I guess Jeff Lynne wore the long orange robe because he didn't look as silly as the ones with the cellos?! Absolutely brilliant :)
@@gaylewayland9628 It was a thing back then. Obviously Roy went wild with the makeup with Wizard, but if you check out early Genesis footage you see Peter Gabriel doing a similar thing looking somehow gaudy and minimalist at the same time. But then King Crimson went in a different direction dressed half Summer of Love regalia in their Hyde Park performance, and the rest very casual attire like they're just heading down to the pub.
Bev Bevan tells the story of how he, Roy and Jeff would get drunk in a local pub before the first ELO gigs, then have a curry to try and mop up the alcohol in the bodies before taking to the stage - the three of them couldn't face it!
Interesting to see what the lineup looked like back in the day. The sound is awful. To hear the performance of this song fully realized with today's technology, fulfilling Jeff Lynne's vision, see the Hyde Park BBC Radio 2 performance with the BBC Concert Orchestra on youtube.
Agreed. My god no one is even bothering to sing here! Jeff and Iain's vocals on that CD or evident in recent concerts is a world away from this. Still a masterpiece though and it must have sounded great live in 1972.
Is that richard tandy on bass and marc bolan trex at first chair cello followed by m edwards hugh mcdowell roy wood the warlock who is violin not kaminski
The most charitable explanation is they had bad monitor speakers and couldn’t hear themselves to know they were all playing out of tune. Also, John Lennon called, and would like his Dear Prudence chord sequence back, if you’re done with it Jeff.
I love ELO....but someone needs to tell me why Jeff got the lyrics all mixed up to his own song! Also, don't even get me started on the train wreck that is the original lyrics to Jeff's Boogie #2!
