As an installation engineer working for a German company for the last 28yrs in the UK.. 3 GOOD TIPS... That may be helpful 😉 1.. In hot weather do not wear black T shirts .. black only absorbs the heat making your working day more uncomfortable.. wear white to reflect the heat ... 2. As & where possible driving to your local building merchant for a few items is not really cost effective on your fuel consumption.. Fill the back of the wagon with bricks & lime & material... Less journeys.. less money spent 3 & final top tip & the best tip Buy yourself a Veritas hand plane Router... You will be able to make anything & every thing & every wood working joint imaginable It is a dream hand tool to own £190 approximately now and door and window tenons would be a walk in the park.. Good luck & best wishes

I understand your tips but the last one I think is certainly right but the site of the chateau is in the middle of nowhere and there is no one living and no security! RIP vlog camera. It worked well for you. I have to say I really enjoy how you use your drone Dan. Absolutetely no way you could lift steels that are over 5 m long into place on your own. A 200 mm steel weighs 23 kg per metre and these might be bigger. 240 mm is already up to 31.5 kg/m. Eyeballing the size of a room from a video is close to impossible but I't hazard a guess and say the span is about 5 m, plus at least another 250 mm to go into the wall on either side, so 5.5 m length. That means a 200 mm steel weights 126 kg, a 240 mm one 173.25 kg. That's not insanely heavy but definitely more like a four-person job, especially because of the unwieldy size. There are some nifty tools that would make the installation easier though. The same style of trestles Dan uses for his scaffolding is available with a crank and spindle system for lifting heavy items. A pair of those could well turn this into a two-person job. Getting the steels in is still quite tricky because they need to be longer than the room, so a lot of maneouvering involved.

I love that you’re keeping the odd floor levels as this is the character of the chateau. You don’t want it all level and perfect…it’s a chateau and the magic of twisting corridors, little steps up and down, hidden staircases etc is what makes the magic…..please please please add hidden doors and secret passages….how fun for the boys and any future guests. Inquiring minds want to know - Stephanie has often spoken about the approval process she has to deal with when she wants to make changes to / update / repair her Chateau. Are you subject to that process too? Are there building codes in France that you must adhere to as you restore a significant historical building?
Dan, was that "camera fall 2" at (04:46) ??? I am really looking forward to this block and beam system as it will also be very good to put underfloor heating into the screed and turn and "ice box" into a 2026 home ! RIP to the CANON !!! And great news to have "Calvin the machine" back soon !!!
I've been following Dan for a month. Clicked an interesting video re chateau renovation and watched a few, then backtracked to the very first vlog at the farmhouse. Pretty soon, I was up at night hitting that "I'll watch just one more" button and all of a sudden it's 3am. Thank goodness I'm retired because I'm hooked. Now I've watched the latest installment and there's no "one more" button. I don't know how y'all do it; watch one, then wait for the next. I've got the DTs! But seriously, watching Dan from the first at the farmhouse, and when he started working at LaLonde, is to see him grow in his skills, talents, ambitions, and confidence not only in his building talents but also his video work. It's an amazing journey he's taking us all on. Would that we all had his drive and abilities. And, Dan, I don't know how you can go through all the comments you receive, edit your vlogs, and get any sleep, but know that we are all here and I hope our energy buoys yours. PS - since seeing the boys in a recent vlog, I am wondering about the projects that we last saw at the farmhouse...the boot room and the bathroom. Have they been hired out, or did you finish them and just not film that?
That's very exciting, Dan. Small steps every day & it's just amazing how the progress adds up! I think those ring beams are just the ticket to reinforce the old building, and the beam & block is a worthy replacement for the old roof - also a great structural member. And to heat you talking about starting on the other floors ... superb! Great stuff!
Calvin should move to France to help you every day. You are amazing how you manage on yr own…. Lifting all the heaving items, up & down so often. Keep up the fantastic work ❤
The drawings were really helpful to understand what you’re planning. Its amazing that in a few weeks there’ll be a massive step forward. Glad you’ll have Calvin along to help. ❤
Amazing progress Dan and yay for the return of Calvin the Courageous. Along with Dangerous Dan and Nimble Nick you’re the dream team of Chateau Ruin renovation! I never miss a vlog. You’re enthusiasm and non stop action is so inspiring! X
Great Work! Hope the new camera is better than ever! I have to have two phones, and two vehicles. If the camera is the root of your income, get two. Both of my phones were lost last year. A patron of a coffee shop close by, walked to my house. An electrician found them run over in the street. They both had great fall guards, and screen covers, meaning they weren't damaged, just had to replace their screen covers. Hope you can get a backup plan, so that all the hard work you do gets easier. Sometimes used cameras are available online. The new concrete reinforcement plan seems superb. I am living in a neighborhood of engineers. My uncle was an architect. Running things by a structural engineer or structural architect is an option. But your instincts seem really good! Amazing progress. You definitely are preserving what you can, with good plans with the new construction.
I had to make flooring and paint choices for our house when we moved in and thought that task was daunting… I couldn’t even imagine trying to make all of the decisions needed for this project. I would be overwhelmed to the point of paralysis! So much respect for your organizational skills, foresight, determination, talent and attitude. Love watching you bring the chateau back to life!
I don't understand anything about building things to live in, but I enjoy watching this progress. I'm so sorry about your camera. What a loss. Honestly, I haven't noticed a change in quality, but maybe I'm not that observant. Anyway, so glad it wasn't you that fell. I occasionally pray for your safety.
Great stuff Dan so many people are pulling for you, many of whom would volunteer if they could and many who can't afford to donate much as we want to. You have our hearts and minds though.
The filmmaking despite the camera loss was gorgeous anyway! I loved the drone shot of the forest with the chateau peeking over the top. It amazes me your problem-solving ability and your knowledge over such a broad expanse of subjects - the construction, filmmaking, gardening, food and cooking... the list goes on and on. How did you learn all this so quickly? I am glad the response is so good so that you can keep on moving forward!
Have you considered talking to a structural engineer? I think the engineer will save you time and money in the long run. Nothing is worse than having to redo stuff. There are some sketchy bricks that need replacing. Sounds like you are moving in the right direction. ❤
I know we don't see everything, but your optimism, fortitude and 'I can do it' attitude is amazing. Thanks for sharing your epic journey. I (now?) have no doubts that you will make it to the end.
Exelent progress and great video… you went with original multilevel flooring with steps here and there … well it complicated things in a way and simplifyed it in another… I would use an architect to preplan for elevator? I for one think your videos are spectacular. I keep hoping that someone out there can sponsor the whole project with you leading the charge. You have so much vision and am happy Calvin is such a good helpmate. The progress is astounding.
Leaving the different floor levels will add character. The existing joist slots in the walls can then be used, speeding up the job. The block and beam floor is the way to go. Use in the tower floors as well as the basement ceilings/ entrance room floors. All looking good. Shame about the camera. James.
You definitely made the right decision re. the floor levels. Keeping it a little bit quirky, characterful and romantic is the way to go, IMHO. Restoring rather than rebuilding. I love your videos. @@bozersgal Young? Don't tell me you are one of those people who are so afraid of growing old you say someone is 90 years young. Man has a full grown beard to die.
Thanks Dan, for that decent explanation on how you're doing the ring beams.
Great plan Dan, I like the thought of concrete beams at the top, good if they get wet rather than wood. I haven’t noticed video quality deterioration! Keep Safe, John in Monmouth
Dan, I still don't know how you can do everything by yourself. I'm glad your friend will be coming back to help you for a while especially with the beams. Please, please wear safety harnesses to protect yourself. God Bless, Kathy USA 🇺🇸
I think someone in France needs to make a movie about you, Dan, and how incredible this is what you are doing, by yourself. Rebuilding this burned out rubble of a chateau is utterly amazing! Seriously there are no words to describe what you are trying to accomplish. I look forward to each new day watching your video.
There is a camera crew already filming Dan for some program but he hasn't told us anything about it.😢
@@jmk1962 The folks at Château de Montmagner managed to hide a professional TV crew from their RUclips audience for over a year. I think they had a contract stating they couldn't let on anything about the filming before the show went live.
@@Ragnar8504- Possibly. We have seen the camera people in Dan's vlogs a few times, so not totally hiding it.
If he ever finishes it, it would be worht making a documentary about it!
Whoo HOO! Calvin is back. Glad to see you having help. So sorry about the camera, I remember when you first got it. You were straight up giddy, lol. 🧡
Some of us don't mind being alone all the time... but it's nice to have someone to talk to once in a while. Some people have dogs or cats. You have us, we have you ! Thankyou.
I know that you made so many vlogs to pay for that camera, but don't forget that we be always here, waching you and your work, filmed with who knows what! (old gopro?) Love to see the plans for the future and happy that Gavin comes to help you out! Take care Dan! 💋
He is bringing in almost $8,000 a month on Patreon already, so along with ad revenue, it shouldn't be too hard to handle a new movie camera.
Wow the tower looks very unstable. Be careful Dan. So good to watch your work and restore this lovely place. All the best to you.
Dan, nous sommes tous là à te regarder, à cliquer à te mettre des petits sous dans Patreon. Mais les jours derniers le travail et le soleil nous donnent du « fil à retorde ». Ce que tu fais est hors norme ! Bravo pour toi.
Dan I am fairly new to the party you host. I am deep in a local community rebuilding project that has not one brick or iron beam, but you inspire me. Thank you. You celebrate the "bit" of the day and cast vision for the next that gives me encouragement for my bit for today and hope for tomorrow. Thank you!
Thanks for sharing the story of the sad demise of your SONY. Figures, just a little tumble broke the camera's back. Thanks for the sketch, too. I always like Show & Tell. ❤
Dan, I am sooo invested in these videos. I came across one and loved it, so obviously I went back and binge watched all the videos on the chateau. I am amazed with the work you are doing.
Ot amazes me how you can take something snd creat something fabulous from what ever materials and things you have at hand ….. and it always turns out brilliant …..a wonkie camera - a broken drone - what people would see as a tear down ……. you create wonderful things …… zen hugs your way
Inquiring minds want to know - Stephanie has often spoken about the approval process she has to deal with when she wants to make changes to / update / repair her Chateau. Are you subject to that process too? Are there building codes in France that you must adhere to as you restore a significant historical building?
I've wondered the same?
There are and I hope Dan isn't just winging it or it could be condemned.
France has a comprehensive planning system. You can't even knock down a tatty old shed without permission.
Hi Dan , your vlogs are fascinating and addictive . Looking forward to seeing your diagram plans come to life . Best wishes for the coming weeks
This is exciting to see it all come together . I wish one day to see this chateau in person its a work of art .
...Dan is an extreme builder...he can do complicated...Go Dan...😁👍🤟
Dan I see your drawing. Laughing so hard. However you are still Dan the Man. I really am in awe that you have taken on the project.
My heart sank when you talked of your loss….. so glad you can replace this !! Whew!!!
I know, for a while there i thought he was talking about his dad.
Love the memorial flashback for the Sony camera- I remember watching when you bought that! Wow time flies; Sony’s don’t😢
RIP
That's very exciting, Dan. Small steps every day & it's just amazing how the progress adds up! I think those ring beams are just the ticket to reinforce the old building, and the beam & block is a worthy replacement for the old roof - also a great structural member. And to heat you talking about starting on the other floors ... superb! Great stuff!
Someday your boys will love running through that chateau, having sleep overs and laughing gleefully through that forest!
R.I.P Sony camera., you will be missed. You had a hard , but full life.
All his tools have a hard life.
Glad things are moving along, lots of work, and we all enjoy the vlogs.
Calvin should move to France to help you every day. You are amazing how you manage on yr own…. Lifting all the heaving items, up & down so often. Keep up the fantastic work ❤
I know they still build like this, brick and stone, but I’m used to stick construction so this is amazing to me. Great work.
You are doing so great Dan and I look forward to your daily vlog. Glad Calvin will be there to put in a lot of help to you.
The drawings were really helpful to understand what you’re planning. Its amazing that in a few weeks there’ll be a massive step forward. Glad you’ll have Calvin along to help. ❤
Makes sense to do the different levels as they were, it will be beautiful!
You are such a hard working man. I’m amazed at this project you took on…🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 I’m praying for your continued strength..for this is not an easy job.
It will save you a lot of climbing with someone at the bottom to load up those buckets. Maybe preload materials while you have the help. 🥰
Have you considered talking to a structural engineer? I think the engineer will save you time and money in the long run. Nothing is worse than having to redo stuff. There are some sketchy bricks that need replacing. Sounds like you are moving in the right direction. ❤
I’m a visual learner, at my grand age, this drawing has helped me understand, thanks Dan, luv ya, from New Forest England
Dan, I watch every day. It amazes me that one man can accomplish so much. Incredible determination. I am truly impressed.
This has to be my favorite series to watch. It's the first thing I put in when I get in bed. Keep up the great work.
I know we don't see everything, but your optimism, fortitude and 'I can do it' attitude is amazing. Thanks for sharing your epic journey. I (now?) have no doubts that you will make it to the end.
Exelent progress and great video… you went with original multilevel flooring with steps here and there … well it complicated things in a way and simplifyed it in another…
I would use an architect to preplan for elevator?
I would also plan a fireproof atticflooring to prevent next fire hazard
Dan you are now a youtube movie vlogstar
Geez, that was a scary minute, it was only the camera we are mourning...dude, we would be watching you if there was a huge crack in the lens, we'd deal...lol, glad all is well and we get to see Calvin again...poor camera...
Personally, I didn't even notice the difference in cameras. That's how good he is.
It’s good to hear you’ve got it all worked out, amazing what a pair of hands can do with the assistance of a brain
Dan your such a Amazing person and so positive !
Rip darling Sony. You helped spread so much joy in your short life. Thank-you ❤️
Dan, love the drone footage coming over the forest canopy to the Chateau. Beautiful!
Great video. Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow
Hello from PEI Canada. When orange pants guy arrives, will you have a few days holiday?
To be honest, the quality of the vlogs is still great and I've barely noticed, because you cut and structure them so well.
You are amazing and so was your camera. I'm so excited everyday for your video. Be safe stay healthy enjoy your afternoon
Love the drawing. Sorry to hear your camera bit the dust. Looking forward to seeing Calvin again. See ya tomorrow 😍😘
It's a comfort to see you're addressing some of the main structural challenges and hear about your plans for that. Keep on keeping it up, Dan!
Bless you Dan; so sorry your camera had an accident but these things happen; don't be too sad. Good news a new camera will arrive soon. Exciting catch-up regards your structural plan for the new floor. Have you tried to get someone to help you? We would all be so relieved if you you were not alone. 😢 You are making fantastic progress; bravo Dan; you will make your dreams manifest. Love, good fortune and fortitude. Xxx
You've got a solid plan of action, Dan. All the brick work and those arches look so awesome. I'm so super psyched about the next few weeks. AND Calvin's coming back!!! Woohoo!!! 🎉🙌💪😎👷
Dan, your work ethics is amazing! Hopefully our younger generation is watching and adding your work ethics into their daily lives.
Sounds like a good plan to leave the levels like they are!!
I love it when Calvin is there because he dishes it back just as hard as you give it. He's a good sport too. This time, however, he won't have to dig. LOL! So excited to see things changing. Love the short vlogs with the little progress reports. RIP to the one that got you started. Your an old hand at this vlog thing now. A veteran. There were bound to be some cauailties.
Wow! I am glad that you figured out how to still blog for us! Honestly, I didn’t see that much of a difference in quality!
Calvin and Dan make an incredible team! Their skills and expertise in solving structural challenges are truly impressive. It's evident that their collaboration yields excellent results. 💪🏰🔨 It would be fascinating to see Calvin relocate to France and work with Dan full time. Their combined talents could lead to even more remarkable projects and innovative solutions. It's always inspiring to witness such skilled individuals pushing the boundaries of construction. Keep up the amazing work! 👏😃
Another great episode, I love the music you play, you know your music man I truly dig it!!!!!
Yes, to the outdoor loo amongst the garden. Put the Chelsea show to shame!😂
RIP little camera, you gave your life to enrich us all. 😥 we won’t forget you when your replacement comes. Enough of the sillies. Your work is coming along very well. Hopefully Calvin can help with the heavy lifting.
I for one think your videos are spectacular.
I keep hoping that someone out there can sponsor the whole project with you leading the charge.
You have so much vision and am happy Calvin is such a good helpmate.
The progress is astounding.
Best chateau vlog on RUclips!
It's a pity they're not longer but I realise it's ALL a lot of time eating, hard work restoring a large building AND creating quality videos.
I really appreciate you diagramming and explaining the construction. It really helps to have a visual.
