Lupin is a very long franchise to sit through. I began watching it starting from the 1969 pilot this January and currently I'm in the middle of Part 4. Yes, I've been watching everything in chronological order for six months now and still haven't reached the latest installment yet. One of the best things about the franchise is it having a loose continuity. One can simply jump in any part without concerning of continuity or specific plot threads with few exceptions when they do reference previous events like in anniversary specials. I found out about Lupin the Third from the CGI trailer, I instantly fell in love with it! I needed to catch up with this anime series. I haven't watched anime in so many years, if that made me change my mind to pay a month of Crunchyroll, wow that's some impact. I started watching the 1970's and up to part 5. The craft of the stories of each generation is just absolutely amazing, beautiful, and just astonished me so much.

@@JerichoVR Lupin is the master. Nobody even knows what he looks like as revealed in the latest installment. Mouse is a team...Lupin has a team too but sometimes it almost seems like he might not need to pull off some of his heists. I vote Lupin. and its neat to see someone that knows an actual anime and not the mainstream boring stuffs
Ernesti Echevalier Child prodigy lupin definitely is better because some episodes are him going on solo tasks without any help from his friends and still pulls his heist off, one example being the season 1 episode where lupin tracks down a fake lupin while stealing back a book his grandfather wrote
When a series gets this prolific and important in the anime world, O find a lot of people only really talk about it in deep analysis. More casual fans usually know of it and watch, but there's so much to talk about the conversation itself is difficult to start. Lupin III is one of my absolute favorite shows of all time though. I feel you.
I think it’s how society would expect of an anime. Because Lupin The Third was from the 70s, the perspective of the show also changed to keep up with the flow of time. However todays anime changed entirely towards fan based, erotic moments, and harem, and etc. Lupin never made that kind of drastic change because it was built upon for so many years that to change the formula would also mean to change the show entirely. The music, the animation, and the characters changed but they kept their roots. I think what Hayao Miyazaki was actually commenting on anime is trash was that anime was flowing in a different direction then what he saw from the early days of Lupin The Third when he co directed part 1. I could be wrong on this and it can be many reasons based on preference or that the genre isn’t as intriguing as it looks, but i’m just saying that the biggest impact would be the flow of time.
The most viewed video on Lupin III Part V that isn't a trailer, the opening or the ending has less than 5k views. Seriously, why does nobody care? Not even some Hello Underworld compilations?
I love this anime. Found it a while ago through detective Conan and instantly watched it. It's even portrait in the Überseemuseum (a museum) in Bremen, Germany. Totally worth watching
Flugmorph They currently have a special exhibition about Japan so they have quite a few statues and manga and merch there. Some of the things are from the normal exhibition and were just moved to the Japan one for a better atmosphere and to see more. I recommend both ones it's a pretty cool museum
Honestly I don't know. I traveled to Bremen with my theater group and I went there on my own. The Japan exhibition is normal sized for a temporary exhibition but the rest of the museum has amazing stuff old and new from all around the world. I do think it's worth seeing. The entrance fee is cheap in comparison of other museums I have visited but if you do go take your time to walk through both. It's fun and there is a lot to see. I really enjoyed it personally. Keep in mind that the Japan one is only there until the 1st of May. So if you do go you have to go fast.
Rō Renzu i think hand-drawn animes are better in general. More love in it. More detail. Look at the ‘newer’ Ghibli movies. But that’s just my opinion. Lately you see sort of drawn animes mixed with CGI. I like that though
I appreciate this video. And the answer to this question really is as simple as a number. People see “part 5” and think “welp, no way I’m gonna go through at least four series, probably hundreds of episodes and movies and god knows what else just to watch this!” And they scroll past, not realizing that’s so inessential and how friendly the franchise is to jump into. It has about as much of a barrier of entry as scooby doo. Lupin is an icon and classic franchise but mainly in name only to most western anime fans, as he says. Many know *of* it but far fewer have actually put the effort forth to *watch* it. But I can’t blame people for not thinking it’s that simple. I myself didn’t realize that for a while. The fact that this is the most viewed Part V video on RUclips (that isn’t official promos) and still has less than 10k views says it all sadly. I just really wished at least one of the more influential anitubers actually gave it a watch or even just a shoutout when they had the chance. It’s a shame, I wish more people would talk about it, but I’ll do my part and shill for this wonderful series that stole my heart as well till the day I die! Earned yourself a subscriber and I genuinely look forward to seeing you cover more of the series!
The thing about it is it's a double-edged sword on one hands I would like to have more people to talk about series with but on the other if it were more popular you have to deal with the setbacks that come with big anime fandoms like Dragon Ball Z or jojo's Bizarre Adventure. Not to mention the asshole/holyer than thou
Ahh, yes, Lupin lll...childhood memories of me watching this in French an pestering my dad to translate, because I didn't understand much more than the names and food items. Every season is a testimony to its time, and once you've caught one season, you will flawlessly understand the entire franchise, because it is equally simple, captivating, complex and pretty much sums up why Lupin is so successfull: he always tries to keep up with times, to adapt, to change, and thus the series never grows old sticking to the same formula, but manages to remain fresh, entertaining and contemporary since over fifty-three years.
Lupin is freaking fantastic. I started my journey with Part 4 and went back to watch the older movies, series and ovas. And after watching all the older stuff made me appreciate Parts 4 and 5 alot more just because of how much love its getting from the creators and animators. LONG LIVE MONKEY PUNCH!
Dude I've always thought about this. Why none of the anime fans ever talk about Lupin. I'm not even an anime fan but as a Japanese, Lupin is my favorite anime ever! Everybody in Japan knows Lupin.
It wasn't long ago when I watched my first Lupin III movie [The Castle of Cagliostra, I think that's how It's called]. Man, wasn't that movie great. Most of all, I loved how that movie ended. It felt very, but very nostalgic.
Part 5 was amazing, and I mean surprisingly and impressively amazing. Almost flawless and perfect. I don’t know who worked on the season, but my gosh did they do it justice while implementing post-modern technology in it. 9/10 hands down. Beautiful animation and wild-like impressive storyline. Many plot twists. I highly recommend it :)
I recently started watching Lupin from the very beginning and I am IN LOVE with it. The characters are so charming and the whole series just gives me such a Scooby Doo mixed with Looney Toons vibe. I adore it 💕
Part of this is down to copyright and distribution- the author of “Arsene Lupin” Maurice Leblanc’s estate claimed copyright infringement- and this made it’s official distribution outside of Japan an uphill battle until quite recently. The film was deemed original enough to jump through the red tape- But many viewers were utterly unaware of it being a series.
I was talking about it until TMS or molebeat nearly took down my channel. My best Lupin vids were the introduction to Lupin. Did you experience any copyright problems with TMS/molebeat because they were on me hard trying to remove everything that had Lupin in it.
Lupin , as you said has this "where do I start?"-problem like many old series. Ive heard the name a lot but never watched any Lupin series, until the Conan vs Lupin special years ago. Back then I couldnt find the original series so I went to the movies. It takes a while to understand the characters but its an enjoyable entry point nonetheless.
Yeah as someone who picked up the series during the dry spell between Part 3 and 4 all I really had to go off at the time were the specials and movies. But Lupin has a really approachable Western feel and as someone who grew up watching 80s Spielberg adventure films and classic heist movies it sort of just fit right at home.
I also do have a soft spot for Lupin 3rd; he's the reason why I'm into anime in the first place. It kinda saddens me that no one even acknowledge it, especially since Monkey Punch is long gone.
Part V and Castle of Castliglioro are what got me into Lupin, now I really feel like buying the official merchandise of this series to support it, the mangas, the BD and even some figures, is such a shame that this gems are totally underrated and not picked up by the mainstream anime viewers, they could use some of this good ol' fun. (Hell, I haven't seen any hispanic youtuber or reviewer talk about the last two entries, one even ditched it as "lol 5/10, the same boring crap as part 4")
I loved every second of part 4 and 5, it felt fresh and each episode was different but still adds to the story. The jazzy themes of each of the characters gives you a sense of nostalgia even for those who’ve never seen parts prior to the newer ones. This series is truly a piece of art and I wish more animation fans would realize it.
I'll admit I just discovered Lupin III this past year, but I seriously love it. I've been rewatching the older series and tv specials in no particular order and by golly has it been a fun trip! I don't know why I never came across this funny, quirky, surprisingly heartfelt anime before but I am so glad I did. Lupin, he's a groovy guy. ;)
Underrated gets thrown out a lot, but for a series this long-running, influential, and high quality, I really am surprised that it hasn't become more popular in the west.
I still talk about this wonderful show/movies. I named my cats Jigen, and Fujiko! I still love what they're doing with Lupin these days! Thanks for the video.
okay why is this not on Netflix 😭 [i know, bec they have their own live action series and probably don’t wanna get involved 😩] I’ve watched the original subbed green jacket series, subbed & [old] dubbed the Castle of Cagliostro, around 4 seasons of the dubbed red jacket series when i was 8! it’s sad that no one knew about it back then and i thought this DVD handed down to us was just a once-upon-a-time classic from the 70’s
nice video and yeah - sadly current entertainment culture / anime fandom has seemed to have neglected the lupin franchise... :) but we over at #YearOfLupin have dedicated single videos to pretty much all Lupin projects so check us out if you want to see some diehard fans give some critical discussion on the franchise - regardless of that tho - good points made here in this video, good job!
I vaguely remember that I used to watch this show along side with Ranma 1/2 when it aired in my country's television. Now they just repeatedly airing old Detective Conan episodes. Man, I miss Lupin the 3rd
I started reading the original Arsene Lupin books, Awhile back i started reading and watching Detective Conan, Which lead me to the TV Special and Movie, Which lead me to Lupin III
Brah I watched this show FAITHFULLY I can’t believe I found this video. The best anime I’ve ever come across even in 2020. Been watching it since the 90’s
Hi there. I grew up from Lupin the third part 2 through the latest one until I moved to US. I love the way you express how you love Lupin. I love Lupin the third too!!
Thank you! I have loved Lupin for years in spite of only having seen very little of Part II and several of the films. Castle of Cagliostro is one of my absolute favorite films of all time in any medium and, as always inevitably happens, I recently rediscovered Lupin, starting series IV. It’s absolutely fantastic and, whether intentional or not, you really touched on something profound when you said you’re either laughing AT it or WITH it. In most cases that would be a bad thing, but I think with Lupin it’s part of WHY it’s such a classic. Even my girlfriend who has seen VERY little of the show can appreciate and enjoy the sheer absurdity of some cheesy line or impossible feat that gives realism two flailing middle fingers, and in the same breath be stunned by a dramatic plot twist or intense moment. There’s really nothing quite like it, and I hope you never stop using Lupin as an adjective!
Huge in Japan, unnoticed in US/UK. If Cagliostro was better advertised maybe it would be more successful in your country. Rest easy; in Japan Lupin will never be forgotten
@@ernestiechevalierchildprod1586 very true! My older brother use to get all the ones in 'bustinas' and we'd look everywhere to download subtitles because it was only in Italian and 'Giapponese' haha. I will always have a softspot for 'The Fuma Conspiracy'
Lupin 3rd is a classic, and it's a shame that few give it a chance. Your also right about people getting intimidated about the series being so big. They might have the idea of it being something as complex as star trek or gundam and don't know where to begin. Other people I've talked to either have thought the art style was unappealing or thought the characters were from cowboy bebop. The one thing that makes lupin great though, and I wish others could experience, is how the series rarely shows the typical anime clichés and stereotypes, making Lupin 3rd truly unique and stand apart from most other anime.
I’m a big fan of Lupin myself and this is something I think about as well. One of the things I love most about the series is that you can start anywhere and you’ll be able to understand the story. These days, you need to watch tons of episodes (or a recap filler episode) just to get the story. On the other hand, Lupin III is a series where you can watch any movie, episode, or special in any order you like without worrying about continuity. That’s something I find charming about not only Lupin, but some other classic anime as well. Because they don’t follow an overarching plot, you can watch these stories in anyway you want and not get confused. Viva Lupin III!
Dude I watched 1 episode of Lupin III back when I was a kid, and I remembered the whole episode today. Recently got it in my reccomendations and loved it again
I just got into Lupin III last week with Jigen's Gravestone and Goemon's Spray of Blood. This series has so much personality, I wish it was more widely talked about.
Considering the first 28 episodes of Part II as well as Part IV and Part V have been shown on Adult Swim/Toonami, I’d hardly say nobody talks about it.
I just love Lupin. Both the original Arsène Lupin novels from the 19th century, and the anime of his grand son Lupin the third! 💖 Those stories will always have a big place in my heart.
Yeah... the show is really amazing... and a lot of people seem to know about it, so it really is strange that not many people talk about it. it's just such a good anime..
Yeah most ppl don’t realize that you really done need to watch all the other series to get what’s doing on. I started watching when part 4 aired and loved the series.
What I love about the franchise is that even at it's worst it's still entertaining. I've watched parts 1, 4, and 5, TWCFM, several parts 2 and 3 episodes and over 30 movies and tv specials and even when I watch a movie or an episode that I don't like they're still entertaining and funny enough to hold my attention. Out of the 30 plus movies I've seen there's only 2 of them I trully hate (Return of Pycal which is widely considered to be the worst piece of Lupin media ever created and the first Lupin vs Detective Conan special which was essentially a really long Conan episode guest starring Lupin, and it bored me to tears)
I also enjoy that the series takes place over multiple time periods. One of the movies I watched takes place in the 60's where the new one is in modern day
I have several of his movies but unfortunately not all of them. What I like about the movies the most is him and his team are always the heroes unlike the Manga and Anime series. Which they comes off more as villains.😎👍
I learned about Lupin the third in my anime club, where we watched two episodes. I had no clue what it was, but as soon as there was a heist scene, Lupin's genius clicked. This show is masterful in its characters, its plot, and...."other" things.
Completely empathize with this video. It’s definitely one of my favorite anime’s. Just finished part 5 and it was incredible. Definitely one of the best series, Loved all the callbacks to past escapades.
if I want to introduce someone to this series. I ALWAYS start with the spinoff 'The woman named Mine Fujiko' it was just so complex, dark and thrilling to watch. The artstyle is great as well.
Lupin the 3rd is one of the first anime’s I’d watch and my god it’s beautiful with so many adventures likable characters great animation and a nostalgic gem. I wasn’t into anime before and when I was finding something to watch my found lupin and I saw the first episode and I was so interested and happy and when I watched more I was in love with it. Now I continue watching the show and hope there will be more like part 6 and waiting for lupin the 3rd the first to come on blu ray. Which my favorite lupin shows is part 5 and part 2 which both are incredibly awesome. So that’s why lupin is just a masterpiece in my opinion. Sure there are stupid moments but it doesn’t make the show awful it makes it superior
I loved this series i have watched all the anime seasons, ova and movies. Not only Lupin 3, people don't talk about City hunter anime. Whenever one search for city hunter its that kdrama that pops up. Lupin 3 City hunter Kochikame Astroboy Ashita no joe Are gems
Maybe no one talks about City Hunter... in USA and England. on the contrary in France, City Hunter is EXTREMELY popular, the animated series had a HUGE success in the nineties and It’s still famous this days. The original manga of City Hunter by Tsukasa Hôjô is also very popular. Ryô Saeba is one of the most beloved animé heroes in France with Harlock/Albator, Cobra and Songoku from Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z. And the last animated movie « City Hunter Shinjuku Private Eyes » got a cinematic release last year, France was the first country in the world after Japan to get an official release for this film. Unfortunately, Lupin III isn’t very popular in France. Luckily, we got a cinematic release of the CGI animated movie « Lupin III: the first last month. And it was awesome to discover this great movie in a cinema!
lupin is honestly one of the best anime series i have ever watched and i ask myself the same question all the time. It's one of the only series that also has a decent english dub. I recently finished part 5 and i picked it up at part 4 but i am gonna watch the original series and part 2 and 3 soon.
Now is a better time than ever before for western fans to get into Lupin. All five TV series in their entirety are on Crunchyroll. A lot of the movies (though not all, sadly) have gotten dubs or at least official subtitled releases. Those that haven't aren't too hard to find either. And as the video said, there's almost no barrier for entry. Start with any movie, and TV series, and enjoy.

Couldn't agree more and my vote goes to lupin as well.
@@JerichoVR Lupin is too smooth. Meanwhile Mouse is all thots and hasn't got a prayer!
I feel you.
Golgo 13 is another one and Nintama
Panic Wolves I still need to catch up
in the Japanese trailer it has over a million. It is way more popular in japan than the west.
"Why does nobody talk about Lupin The Third?"
I ask myself this every time I rewatch it lol
Stole my heart too. My all time fave anime.
In time i think lupin will be what JoJo became, old series that people just needed time to catch on and be mainstream.
With how Persona 5 is starting to be more known, and how that was influenced by Lupin. That could help make it regain popularity
I love this anime. Found it a while ago through detective Conan and instantly watched it. It's even portrait in the Überseemuseum (a museum) in Bremen, Germany. Totally worth watching
why is it portrayed there?
Flugmorph They currently have a special exhibition about Japan so they have quite a few statues and manga and merch there. Some of the things are from the normal exhibition and were just moved to the Japan one for a better atmosphere and to see more. I recommend both ones it's a pretty cool museum
is it worth it to travel from berlin to see it?
Honestly I don't know. I traveled to Bremen with my theater group and I went there on my own. The Japan exhibition is normal sized for a temporary exhibition but the rest of the museum has amazing stuff old and new from all around the world. I do think it's worth seeing. The entrance fee is cheap in comparison of other museums I have visited but if you do go take your time to walk through both. It's fun and there is a lot to see. I really enjoyed it personally. Keep in mind that the Japan one is only there until the 1st of May. So if you do go you have to go fast.
yeah i dont think i will even tho i kinda like to visit bremen since i wasn't there before
What I really love about this anime is that *the car chase scenes are hand-drawn* instead of poorly made CGI
Rō Renzu i think hand-drawn animes are better in general. More love in it. More detail. Look at the ‘newer’ Ghibli movies. But that’s just my opinion.
Lately you see sort of drawn animes mixed with CGI. I like that though
Unless you come from Italy where many love it 😂😂😂I mean is because of Italy that Part 4 was even made 😂
Ha for sure! Didn't Part 4 air first in Italy?
Anigami Yes one month early 😂
A proud Italian ❤️
Zazà!
Watching the English dub currently and the voice work, along with the animation, is first rate. It’s a excellent addition to the Lupin franchise
Lol that Lupe Verse is the reason why I've heard of Lupin The Third
It wasn't long ago when I watched my first Lupin III movie [The Castle of Cagliostra, I think that's how It's called].
Man, wasn't that movie great. Most of all, I loved how that movie ended. It felt very, but very nostalgic.
Miyazaki did a great job with it--someone did a video essay about that film.
The castle of Cagliostro is also what got me into Lupin the 3rd. I also watch the 2 crossovers with my favourite series, Detective Conan.
Growing up in Osaka in the early 80s, Lupin the IIIrd reruns was my childhood.
Lupin is literally my childhood hero.
The film was deemed original enough to jump through the red tape-
But many viewers were utterly unaware of it being a series.
High and mighty coming from the estate of the man who came up with Herlock Sholmes.
I love this series so much!!! It’s one of the best animes ever!
I was talking about it until TMS or molebeat nearly took down my channel. My best Lupin vids were the introduction to Lupin. Did you experience any copyright problems with TMS/molebeat because they were on me hard trying to remove everything that had Lupin in it.
R.I.P. Kazuhiko Katō 1937-2019
Part V is so contemporary! it was fun to see what would an old fashion bunch reacting to modern world obstacles. Viva Lupin Sansei!
Good video, man. You deserve more subscribers for quality content like this.
"Great, I can't wait to learn about-"
"Lu-PON"
Really? I’d say the characters are super instantaneously understandable
I JUST DISCOVERED THIS ANIME! PLANNING ON WHATCHING IT ALL
I loved every second of part 4 and 5, it felt fresh and each episode was different but still adds to the story.
I really loved this part, hope there is a second season soon
I still talk about this wonderful show/movies. I named my cats Jigen, and Fujiko! I still love what they're doing with Lupin these days! Thanks for the video.
fun fact: theres still new lupin media coming out!! part 6, lupin zero, goodbye partner, and a new lupin x cats eye crossover!!
I remember this series being mentioned it in a newspaper article back in 2003 and how it was coming to adult swim
I'm glad you made a video on this topic, plus Lupin is one of my favorite anime
It just came up on my Netflix about a month ago and I watched lupin the third the castle of cagliostro and I was hooked ! It’s absolutely amazing!
okay why is this not on Netflix 😭 [i know, bec they have their own live action series and probably don’t wanna get involved 😩]
I’ve watched the original subbed green jacket series, subbed & [old] dubbed the Castle of Cagliostro, around 4 seasons of the dubbed red jacket series when i was 8!
it’s sad that no one knew about it back then and i thought this DVD handed down to us was just a once-upon-a-time classic from the 70’s
Lupin was so awesome ! The movies 'The Castle of Cagliostro', & 'The Mystery of Mammo", are 2 very good anime movies 👌.
nice video and yeah - sadly current entertainment culture / anime fandom has seemed to have neglected the lupin franchise...
:) but we over at #YearOfLupin have dedicated single videos to pretty much all Lupin projects so check us out if you want to see some diehard fans give some critical discussion on the franchise - regardless of that tho - good points made here in this video, good job!
In Italy it’s a big classic for 89 / early 90 generation. It’s amazing!
finally someone who talks about this!
I vaguely remember that I used to watch this show along side with Ranma 1/2 when it aired in my country's television.
Now they just repeatedly airing old Detective Conan episodes. Man, I miss Lupin the 3rd
Lupin is a masterpiece and holds one of the best representations of a polygamous relationship i've ever seen 10/10
Next episode:
*Lupin meets IcePoseidon.*
I started reading the original Arsene Lupin books,
Awhile back i started reading and watching Detective Conan,
Which lead me to the TV Special and Movie,
Which lead me to Lupin III
Brah I watched this show FAITHFULLY I can’t believe I found this video. The best anime I’ve ever come across even in 2020. Been watching it since the 90’s
I knew I wanted to marry my wife when I found out her favorite anime character was Ishikawa Goemon.
Hi there. I grew up from Lupin the third part 2 through the latest one until I moved to US. I love the way you express how you love Lupin. I love Lupin the third too!!
Just finish watching part 5. Great to see Lupin's fan around the world. Its really rare you know 😊
Nice video btw.
6:11 such a badass scene from Part V and that's just ONE of the badass scenes from Part V
Fishing rod dude: I'm about to defeat you goemon
Goemon: aRe you suRe aBoUt thAt
Fishing rod dude: *looks down
Insert screeching noises
Huge in Japan, unnoticed in US/UK. If Cagliostro was better advertised maybe it would be more successful in your country. Rest easy; in Japan Lupin will never be forgotten
HUGE in italy too.
It was popular in the usa before but now too many fake fans
@@ernestiechevalierchildprod1586 very true! My older brother use to get all the ones in 'bustinas' and we'd look everywhere to download subtitles because it was only in Italian and 'Giapponese' haha. I will always have a softspot for 'The Fuma Conspiracy'
My watchlist has been expanded. :)
Picked up. Thanks for the recommendation my dude. Really fun to watch. :)
My first anime crush...that man definitely stole my heart away 💕
This series is just pure fun in anime format
I also enjoy that the series takes place over multiple time periods. One of the movies I watched takes place in the 60's where the new one is in modern day
"Hey, kids! Wanna watch an anime that's classy *and* fun?"
*"NO!"*
I'm seeing all this Lupin the III stuff around and now I'm really intrigued, it's looks like a hilarious show to watch.
Can't wait they have the original dub cast coming back for the 3d cg movie man imagine if cowboy bebop got a movie like this
I didn’t even know Lupin III existed until the line “Lupe steal like Lupin III” in Touch the Sky by Ye
The reason for me is I'm just not caught up, I know that you don't need to watch prior seasons but with a show this classy how can I not watch them.
You could start with the second series which has dictated the tone of Lupin for decades.
Ricardo Cantoral i watched lupin the third part 1
Imo parts 1 and 4, along with the film Cagliostro are the best ways to dive into it, and then just try other media out from there.
Lupin 3
City hunter
Kochikame
Astroboy
Ashita no joe
Are gems
And it was awesome to discover this great movie in a cinema!
it a great thing that LUPIN episodes is like every Saturday morning cartoon. it's ok if u watch the part 5 when u know nothing about previous parts
lupin is honestly one of the best anime series i have ever watched and i ask myself the same question all the time.
I haven't watched the new Lupin series (I stopped following Lupin franchise after Goro Naya passed away) but MY GOD WAS THAT LAST SCENE BRUTAL :O
2 years late but you convinced me, now I need a video to show the order of the show or how to watch it, thank you😁😁
