Take notes class, because lupin is one of the godfathers of anime anti heroes
& one of if not the first adult animated series.
@@LikaLaruku
I'm not sure about that one.
@@jzi4 Lupin the third is the first ever recorded anime for adults.
@@memorycardzx4415 and the original manga helped popularize the seinen genre.
@@memorycardzx4415 first television adult anime. Erotic anime in cinemas (Like cleopathra 1970) was earlier
Everyone in the comments is pointing out how it's a niche anime, meanwhile I'm still shocked to learn that it's actually bigger in Italy than in Japan itself, where basically an entire generation (including me) watched the show and basically every movie
The original Otakus were italian kids from the '70s and early '80s!
@@DeepEye1994 And then is Latin America in its 90's early 2000's. Incredible how anime unites us all.
Oh yhea here in italy it's like the OG anime series we all love.
I got into it in Latin America too. I remember watching this and Dragon Ball when I was there.
Italy was the country where lots of people (Expecially kids) exported anime from Japan, and they paid high prices to make them air on TV
Glad he's getting some more spotlight
he needs all the spotlight he can get cause goddang it we're gonna arrest that no good lupin the third once and for ALL
Agree
FRRRR IM SO HAPPY
I just discovered the Lupin series and I’m hooked!
Probably because of arsene lupin
Im glad that Lupin is still alive today, even after Monkey Punch's death.
Lupin 3rd will never die
So long as the Lupin series lives on...Monkey punch will never die.
i think i remember seeing a quote from monkey punch saying he wants to see lupin to always on an adventure so im sure the franchise is not gonna end any time soon
I read this comment before the video, and I thought this monkey punch's death was some special attack made upon the lupin character that almost killed him. lol
More so that, in my opinion, the CGI 2019 movie was awesome
Glad as hell that Adult Swim keeps bringing Lupin to the masses.😎🙌
I wish they'd bring back the dub cast to finish the Red Jacket series with a similarly zany dub. Like, I totally want Jigen to drop a LeBron James reference in a 1977 anime. Or Lupin to say "doin it for the Gram!" or something.
I watched back in 2 thousands on adult swim my buddy both the manga that was being translated a lot of sex.
That’s where I was first introduced to the series back in the early 2000’s. I hadn’t really watched any in the past 15 years, but the new movie reignited my interest. Parts 4 and 5 have been amazing and I plan on taking a deeper dive once I’ve finished part 5.
Even with Monkey Punch gone, I hope the franchise continues to grow and become more mainstream. The new film and recent parts are a step in the right direction and I hope we can get a part 6 in the next few years
this actually aged well
I was in Italy just days before part 4s premier, and there were street posters almost everywhere
yeah, iwe consider Lupin as italian ,for his character and because he's son of the 70 italian /police movies.
Here in Italy everyone loves lupin, even if half of the fans don't even know it's anime as it aired on tv dubbed.
Another very famous in italy at the time was Lady Oscar
If it wasn't for Lupin the 8th's failure, we wouldn't have Inspector Gadget.
He's got a secret garage full of identical cars, because his blows up every other episode.
Zenigata's intellectual, fitness, & motivation inconsistencies drove me NUTS in Red Jacket, but damn he's funny. Zenigata has 2 live action TV movies.
Miyazaki worked on some Red Jacket episodes & several other Lupin things under an alternative name.
Lupin Part 2 did a crossover episode with Rose of Versailles.
Really... is the Rose of Versailles cross over just a Lupin creation or does it get mentioned in the Rose of Versailles anime as well?
Lupin: Created for adult men. Apparently 95% female fans on Twitter, Tumbler, & Pixiv. Very popular with fujoshis. Might have influenced American adult cartoon Archer. Definitely inspired With Love From Eroica.
Fujiko: No grey area with her. You either respect her for her game & mind, or you think she's the worst friend on earth & understand why Jigen & Goemon hate her. Level of like or hate varies between series, movies, & writers (almost as if she was still the many different women she started out as).
MIGHT have? Nah, it ABSOLUTELY influenced Archer.
Arrgh, don't remind me of those fujoshis. How regrettable.
Fujiko is a totally different character in each show. She varies from a plain psychopath in the first 10 eps. of season 1, then Lupin's best friend, Lupin's shill, then a solitary psychologically scarred woman...
Personally I don't like Fujiko but it's more because of what the writers do with her, she is so inconsistent across the series when it comes to her relationship with the gang, esp Lupin, that it frustrates me
@@ven-1972 lol dont be so sensitive. its just a silly horny show. you always get the vibe these people are boinkin and any number of them might be friends with benefits. or frienemies with benefits and could be gay or straight depending on whats funnier. kinda like Always Sunny in Philadelphia but worse lmao
Kinda surprised to see that this video is about the same anti-hero that drives a Fiat 500 and has gone to several countries around the goddamn world.
castle of cagliostro was my introduction, mid 90's, and after watched almost all the series and movies i think it stands out. it has a feeling that i can only describe as NOSTALGIA, the ghibli kind
Makes sense. Miyazaki directed it.
I swear it's how I got into the anime
People sleep on Lupin so much, and always say “reminds me of Cowboy Bebop” like no, it’s so much more unique and fun than that, not to mention made first 👀
Seriously as much as I like Cowboy bebop, lupin is a much better series and has a better group of characters that have a fantastic dynamic. Also yeah Lupin been around for years.
@@noctisluciscaelum211 I said this to my friend as a cowboy bebop fan: We love it for the crews relationship and past.. which is like a few episodes and the rest of the episodes are just eh. lol
Actually Wantabe (director of Cowboy Bebop) main inspiration was Lupin the 3rd! I admired both animes, so when I found this out I was amazed :0 Spike's bent up cigarettes is also an homage to Jigen.
We follow eachother on Instagram, you’re that guy with the funee page who likes lupin as much as I do
@BladeCast bebop is definitely better but lupin is way more entertaining and fun I think
thank you SO MUCH for pronouncing Fujiko's surname correctly. mee-ne not mine. drives me nuts to hear mine in every dub. no good reason why, but it's like nails on a chalkboard.
Finally some spotlight on the best underrated gem ever
Wish I could’ve gotten into this series sooner. Netflix had the lupin the III: Castle of Cagliostro and I thought this series was so damn charming. Going to start back on the older parts lol
finally this series is getting some recognition
Lupin the III : Castle of Cagliostro was my first introduction to Monkey Punches' Gentleman Theif. I first saw it on Netflix back in 2018 and I feel in love with it. Then I saw the trailers for the 3D animated feature, Lupin the 3rd: the First and it was incredible. It was just like the original movies and anime but with a fresh coat of 3D graphics. Both films were fantastic.
I love JoJo , Lupin the 3rd and Cowboy Bebop and I’m so glad that Lupin is getting mentioned here
Kato: I can draw this long enough until Lupin finishes and I can drop Monkey Punch.
Many decades later....
Kato: Dammit!! Oh well might as well ride with it.
only us real fans know of the Lupin museum, where everything he has stolen is stored. Not what Fujiko has stolen.
There's a theory for you guys
Actually, I believe the Lupin manga states Lupin has an entire city where he keeps his stolen goods.
Is that lupin musem plot thread from the Stolen Lupin special? I recall it mentioning some place in which Lupin stores the things he has stolen
Ahh I love the Lupin series so much. Lupin is by far my favorite character.
I started watching the series for Jigen.
@@LikaLaruku Understandable, Jigen is fantastic as well.
@@Bewwenforp my life is like lupin the third.
Cool
Nice video, great work and thank you.
18:20 "Wolf" is not the litteral translation of Lupin in french, it’s "Loup".
And fun fact, 18:03 Inspector Gadget is a tribute to inspector Clouseau with Peter Sellers.
Lupin III is my favorite anime series. Ever since I encounter this anime, I admired it so much! Thank you so much for making a history of the Lupin franchise.
I find it funny how every channel, including CrunchyRoll now, has talked about how much of a snack CGI Jigen is.
I’m so happy I fell in love with this franchise nearly two years ago. 💕
My first exposure, like many, was The Castle of Cagliostro. Caught it on Netflix randomly and thought it looked like fun (and it is).
Lupin deserves more attention and appreciation! He’s the greatest gentleman thief around. Thank you for everything, Monkey Punch.
Fun fact: A failed Lupin spinoff gave the world Inspector Gadget.
Protect Tim at all cost.
Tim is for the culture.
A franchise that has stood the test of time.
Man the “Edgar de la Cambriole” title makes me nostalgic. That’s how I got introduced to Lupin III. this is most definitely my favorite anime.
Pretty sad that Lupin is not that well known in the west, it's amazing!
_"Lupin III is avaible on Crunchyroll"_
OK, I'll just check it out!
*Blocked in the UK*
You lied to me.
"I wonder if Herlock Sholmes showed up."
Umm there are at least two episodes from the second series that features Holmes the 3rd.
To be fair one of the appearances was actually lupin in disguise
6:23 so..... he based Jigan after a character in a u.s. movie that was originally based off a character in a Japanese movie '7 samurai'!?!
I go crazy for retro anime and retro Hollywood trivia because that kind of back and forth and back again thing happened with so many iconic IP
In depth history and background videos like this one are true gems. I appreciate the work put in to document the history of one of my most beloved series. Thank you very much.
me: wow can't wait to finally rewatch Lupin again after years,
Crunchyroll: *Sorry, due to licensing limitations, videos are unavailable in your region (Italy)*
This is actually a really well researched and thorough deep dive into the franchise. I’m glad y’all made this because I think it’s gonna become my default link to anyone who’s curious about this series. Viva Lupin!
(I just want to say for the record though that Part 1 is the *best* one and pink jacket is better than a lot of people give it credit for. Also I know there’s too much to cover in a single video but the Takeshi Koike films definitely deserved a shout out, they’re bad ass!)
I love how I know of Lupin due to Arsene. I feel so damn happy that a friend of mine has an addiction to this series and I got into it. Not to mention the Netflix one.
Yeah, I wish I can watch the Lupin series on Crunchyroll. Unfortunately, for some stupid reason all five seasons are not available for streaming in my region (I live in Egypt) because Funimation and Discotek who both own the rights to the international Lupin anime titles did not include Arabic regions as part of their audience hence the region lock.
I guess if you have the means to aquire chrunchy roll aka monee , I guess you also have the means of using a VPN
Always happy to see more Lupin love! Great video, I hope everyone gets into one or more Lupin series or specials. They are so great, and near and dear to my heart ^^
When I need to smile, sometimes I think of Zenigata's tiny finger-sized handcuffs. "I call 'em Zenigotchas!"
Hee hee hee! ☺️
As some one who fell inlove with anime cuz of lupin the 3rd (red jacket show reruns ofc) i cannot express how exciting it is to see a new show/ova every year or 2 and im glad to see others might fall down this rabbit hole 😁
Cool to find out that Jigen was based on a character from The Magnificent Seven! I will have to watch it again. One of the series' appeals is the cast of unique supporting characters that the audience falls in love with.
It should be noted that some of Lupin's accomplices are also based on well-known characters in Japan:
* Inspector Zenigata ("Zenigata Keiji") is descended from Zenigata Heiji, a famous fictional policeman from the Edo period who threw coins (as a projectile weapon) to catch criminals.
* Goemon is a descendent of Ishikawa Goemon, a legendary thief from the 16th century, who was eventually caught and boiled alive to be executed.
There are occasional references to their origins in the stories.
0:55: Really gives me Crash Twinsanity vibes, I like it! XD
I'm really glad the series is finally getting out there for more people to experience.
Now we're at Lupin Part 6!
Thank you so much for this, and almost in the end 23:54 but thanks for make a special mention for his direction on Dead Or Alive, my personal favorite Lupin's movie
Lupin is my favorite anime I've been watching this since part 2 that showed on adult swim. Monkey Punch will be missed
I love the Lupin series so much! I binged the main series and the Fujiko spin offs in under a year and wished it wouldn't end... I plan on re-watching the series again in the infamous Dub version in the future.
I want a black suit Lupin. Representing the dark years of his thief life.
Those would be the manga.
@@OniLordMiki That doesn't count. It's not colored.
I think one of the Koike films has him in a black jacket
He wore a black jacket in the opening part of bloodspray of Goemon.
@@matane2465 It should've been a big thing.
Oh nice, Lupin III. I should get back into it at some point, I've only seen Castle of Cagliostro and some random episodes from parts 1-2
If you liked cagliostro, Fuma Conspiracy is the closest as a lupin the 3rd film
Yay!! I'm so excited to watch this! Lupin is easily my favorite anime of all time and i really hope that with the new CGI movie, more people can come to love it too!
I watched it illegally 💔
@@friedcorm hey, you gotta do what you gotta do~
I watched it on a funimation channel back when i had cable as a kid and still remember it till this day and love it!
@@jirehrodriguezgarcia4971 i first saw it when part 4 aired on Toonami a few years back! I really wish i had seen it sooner lol
Ooooooh you want to watch A Woman Called Fujiko Mine so bad oooooooooh
(Also fun fact, AWCFM was directed by Sayo Yamamoto, the director of Yuri On Ice, plus the Persona 5 opening. She has also been the only female director in the lupin franchise thus far)
She also did Michiko e hatchin. That was super similar to TWCFM quality wise except the ending fell flat
Lupin even has a cameo appearance in the first series of the Super Dimension Fortress Macross (Robotech) anime as a videogame, set during the car chase scene from "The Castle of Cagliostro".
Kazuhiko Katō (Japanese: 加藤一彦, Hepburn: Katō Kazuhiko, May 26, 1937 - April 11, 2019), known by the pen name Monkey Punch (モンキー・パンチ, Monkī Panchi), was a Japanese manga artist, best known for his series Lupin III.
Lupin is my favorite manga character and one of the most iconic ever. But I'm Italian, so that's a given.
Could you guys please give us a rundown on all of Lupin’s movies from the 70’s all the way to now? Because I’m looking for one which involves him trying to take down somebody on a blimp or something.
I think you meant "yes, THAT Isao Takahata"
Thought the same lol
It's a shame he's not a character from Shonen Jump.
If he was, I'd be playing more than Jjba, Mha, and DBZ in jump force.
4:04 yeah I was just thinking that and I came to this video to clear up my confusion with Persona 5 and Lupin 3
Lupin is one of my favorite series I love the classic vibe but the gritty take that the movies and the fujiko mine series are seriously underrated
Just watched my first Lupin The Third anything, it was the CGI movie, and it was pretty fun and amazing. I think I'm gonna start getting into the series with part 4, thanks for the recommendation!
Such a hidden gem of a series.
my boy, my star
As someone relatively new to the world of Lupin, I got my first real looks on Amazon Prime, where they have all of Part 1 and Part 5, subtitled.
Part 2 is there, free to watch as well, but only the English-dubbed episodes. Still, finding the DVD sets was fun, and I'm working my way through those.
Wow the fact that Lupin is actually getting out there is amazing
I love Lupin series, but I didn't know the history of Lupin. Good information. Definitely, I will watch the whole Lupin series.
"Daddy like!"
I know this anime is a classic but I haven't gotten to it yet, should I watch it.
Should you live
definitely!
absolutely , Easily one of my favourites , I used to watch the italian dub everytime it aired on tv in the late evening , the show it's great , it's funny , plain entertaining and the shenanigans were just great , hell , I've never finished the series I should start watching it again
Okay, I'm lowkey excited now but one question I'm seeing quite old Animations of it new Animations and 3d Animations I think the old is the start the new is the end and the 3d is the movie correct?
@@turtle-ot2qc honestly , I don't remember the order , it's been a long time , but I guaratee it's a worthwile show if I still rember the plot of around 30 episodes on top of my head after 8 years
I just find I crazy that only 30 years had passed between the original writing of the character and the birth of the man who made him famous. Which is wayyyy longer then between us and the kings debut. What I’m trying to say is time is crazy but good characters r timeless
Blue jacket lupin is the best lupin.
I love lupin the 3rd!
Grande Lupin! I watched it when I was a kid!
The Inspector Gadget part shook me to my core :D That was my childhood!!!
no wonder people say that those 2 series look very similar to them
I love how Monkey Punch got that nick name im an artist and work a day job at a Harley Davidson my boss called me Slappy my first day of work and it just stuck so im totally going to use that if I ever get big lol
My best childhood anime. Always loved his character and his team.
Thank you for this ton of information about Lupin!
22:58 Who here wants to make a petition for having Keeanu Reeves become live action Jigen
Me, we'll actually my best friend (brother) Jayson Hinton looks like he could be the Keeanu Reevse I looked up in this movie but I still agree.
Fun fact : in Persona 5 there is also a Detective called « Goro Akechi »
Great history of Lupin. Thanks for sharing!
Part 3 had such an amazing opening that I love
Great video, I was looking for something like that, thanks!
Part 4 was really great.
So that explains why i love Inspector Gadget's animation, its DIC and TMS!
It should be know that Lupin the Eighth helped bring us Inspector Gadget..
Lupin the 3rd is my favorite anime series of All Time. The spin off series and movies also great too.
I love lupin the 3rd intro opening at toonami. very catchy. i still saying lupin the 3rd each time pop in my head
I have only seen the Movie Trailer and fell in love with the character and concept
when i saw this i expected some IGN-style trashy content but this video was super super high quality and clearly made with passion, thanks a lot for the amazing content!
It's good you made this shorter than your other videos. While Lupin III is long running, it's history is not nearly as dense. Hopefully this gets people to watch Lupin.
A legendary classic series I loved every since childhood.
Lupin is a classic, great video and topic too btw.
Pioneer Dub Lupin The Third Part 2 English Cast needs to finish completing Part 2. Someone needs to make a petition as they only did around 79 episodes for USA.
I remember as a kid I watched lupin every night on toonami then something happened and lupin disappeared for a while and now I'm glad they are bringing it back with parts 4 and 5 as well with a 3d animated movie I hope to see more of lupin 3rd it's one of my favorite animes
Come on part 6 get here soon
😁👍
With part 6 coming out, I couldn't be happier! The greatest thief of all time is coming back to the lil screen!!
>lupin the third junior
Shouldn't he be Lup---oh, yeah, you said it as I was typing.
One of my all time fav anime
Some of my earliest memories are of "Castle of Cagliostro".
I used to rent Lupin VHS tapes back in the 90’s. Good times :,)
Even though there’s a lot of stuff that didn’t age well in the series, I’ve been seeing that a lot of Gen Z’ers like me are just now starting to get into it and we are HERE for it. Especially cause they said to hell with 9-5s and eat the rich 😂. I had only heard about Cagliostro before but didn’t have the means to watch it. Now as an adult and with the CGI movie (which I felt also did wonders to get more people in the West interested in it) I’ve watched a lot of it and it’s in my top 3 anime. At first I thought someone like me who’s queer and female would not like it but I was so surprised at how much queer representation there was, even if it’s not always perfect. And as someone who’s neurodivergent and used to be scared of being an adult, I like how it doesn’t follow the usual teen/high schooler, but adults their 30s. And they show that they can be silly and goofy while being serious. And if there’s something you don’t like, the cool thing is that you don’t have to watch everything but trust me, there’s bound to be something you like!
I love lupin the 3rd 😁
