- YuGiOh! is known for many things! Things like card games, sometimes being spelt "Yu-Gi-Oh", the Shadow Realm, and world breaking hair. What if I told you two of those four things weren't originally in the series? Between the Yu-Gi-Oh! manga, Season Zero and 4kids... Yugi has taken many forms to become the anime giant it is now!

NICE NOTICE
I love how Exodia does nothing when played and needs to all be in the hand to resolve
@@freyachobi Not true! You can send them all to the grave for various summons, then summon Exodia Necross!
@@nharviala That would have required contract with Exodia to be played. It's obvious this was scripted by someone casually interested in the series using google and other yugioh fact videos and not a player or actual follower of the shows
i noticed that too lol
always funny to remember that said "no name guy" yugi tortured in chapter 1, somehow came back in yugioh 5d as a cop
It's Ushio...
Yup. I noticed that after watching 5Ds for the first time recently.
Why are not doing vids an if your campoter was broke you wud not com this i need the dragon bulls tommnit i need e 6 7 8 9 10
Tetsu Ushio/Tetsu Trudge appears in some way in every series. I've written out where he appears in each and his general age and stuff. Assuming the Zexal one is meant to be him then he actually leads a pretty interesting life in the anime continuity. Anyways, here you go:
Season 0 - just like the manga, he's the villain of the first episode. He's around 15-17, same age as Yugi.
Duel Monsters - there's a flashback to that first episode of the Manga/Season 0 (obviously in DM's artstyle), as effectively anything that isn't redone in Duel Monsters from the early chapters can be considered "probably happened". He's around 15-17, same age as Yugi.
GX - Ushio, Miho, Risa, and literally every other person from DM, Season 0, and GX gets killed off by Darkness except Jaden (yes, even Yugi and Kaiba). Ushio is one of the Domino Duelists listed explicitly as being suicided by a card game with Darkness. Every one comes back as a result of Jaden killing Darkness. GX starts around 10 years after DM ends and each season is approx. a school year, so Ushio should be about 30 when he dueled Darkness/Truman.
5ds - Ushio is a secondary character, 'nuff said. He's around 40-50 in 5Ds.
Zexal - a version of Ushio is seen as a citizen of Astral World that Yuma gives a piece of his Chaos to (basically the Yugioh equivalent of Lifeforce). Considering Zexal is very obviously several decades or possibly a whole century after the other shows and Astral World is both another Galaxy *AND* one of the possible Afterlifes in universe, is unclear if this is actually supposed to be THE Ushio reincarnated in this particular alien afterlife or just an alien ghost that looks like him.
Arc V - In the Standard Dimension, there's a brief glimpse at his silhouette in Season 1 while talking about pro duelists in the Standard Dimension. This is *most likely* actually Ushio, as Standard Dimension is this new timeline's version of Duel Monsters world (there's even a flashback later on showing everyone dueling with OG Kaiba Corp Duel Disks back before Leo Akiba started inventing technology he invented centuries after Duel Monsters in the span of a few years thus radically altering the course of the Standard Dimension timeline). It should be noted that Standard Dimension's year 0 is sometime after Battle City due to the Duel Disks and Standard Dimension is on year 14 during the events of Season 1, as Yuya is 14 in the series and all Z-Arc and Ray pieces were newborns once the dimensions began. So Standard Dimension Ushio should be somewhere around 30-something in Arc V, roughly the same age as he was at the end of GX.
Vrains - his name appears on the leader boards of the Vrains world. Vrains doesn't inherently fit within the timeline (and I don't feel like trying to force it to atm), so there's no reason to assume it's anything more than a reference here.
Sevens - Lol idk, shit's still airing.

It's weird that a country obsessed with guns and sexy plastic people would edit out guns and sexiness
LOL Agree! In that time they were like "its no kids appropriate" while nowdays I'm pretty sure kids know everything, from guns to sex to something else so even they would feel the old yugioh 4kids is too childish. lol
Don't forget death. Also yugioh was created for young teens, not children.
@@gkarak1996 Yeah totally, otherwise main protagonists wouldn't be of age 16-19 but 10. I mean Yuma was probably around 13-14 but Zexal was still dark.
Eh, he didn't go much into detail but there's a reason for why the guns and Sexualization was removed.
The guns were cut because of the Columbine school shooting that occurred during the late 90's. Which started a wave of school shootings that's be ripping up the country for sometime now. This edit was more because they felt it'd be in bad taste to do so at that time. Especially sense the guns didn't serve a purpose in show anyway. Pokemon had it's guns edited out too but this didn't occured until much later in season 1. As Ash was still held at gun point in an early episode where he gets Squirtle.
As for the Sexualization, that's because it was always a bad design from the get go. Some fans don't know this but Kazuki is kind of a pervert. He tended to draw his kinks into the manga and card designs. Hints why some cards and characters where designed that way, even when it made little sense in universe and out. Plus on top of that the card game was marketed towards kids over here (when the original target audience was young adults and teens). So they really couldn't keep the Sexualization due to FCC standards both here and else where.
My only compliant was that it was rarely done well. Leading to rather bad edits on the cards. [Harpie] Archetype is a good example.
And before someone strawman this. No there's nothing wrong with sexual content or even nudity, within the right context. Sexualization is short hand for sexual objectification. When a character is designed with sex appeal first even when it has little to do with the character. Or in contexts that make little sense in universe. Basically there's a time and place for everything.
Harpies would make more sense with tits out, but it would be too much. Wearing clothes, even revealing ones, shouldn't be considered too sexual.
Bro. Yu-Gi-Oh fr kept me from feeling alone in high school. Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon will forever have a place in my heart

When I was a little kid, I read the original manga first, so when it became ''kid friendly'', I wasn't sure I was reading the same manga.
America not being ok with guns? What kind of parallel universe is this?
America being utterly hypocritical about guns is very regular universe stuff tbf
Well... I mean... we also took various shows from all over the world and made them dub sing the national anthem 😂😂 are you really surprised at this point?
As an American, I find the guns to be the weakest of the edits, though not ridiculously so.

Americanization or I as I like to call it "kids might learn more about another country's culture, OH NO!?"
It's actually because they are worried kids wont want to. If they saw a foreign name they will probably think, what is this stupid crap? and switch the channel.
@@darklight002 no that's completely false.
@@NeoDeity That is exactly why. They don't block it based on kids seeing foreign culture and being afraid they will like it. That is just stupid.

The shadow realm adds a layer of horror that is worse than just murder. As a kid it seemed so scary and almost traumatic witnessing a character's soul disappear for all eternity. I would just imagine the torment they would go through as they could never return and would be forced to live in a nightmare horror world forever.
"Which is un-employment... thats what it means." That shit made the whole video worth it.
Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokemon were my shows back in the day. I remember me and my brother would collect both YuGiOh and Pokemon cards.
The Door of Darkness has opened...
@Emperor DarK Then, standing before you, is the gateway to a dark abyss of dread where you'll be engulfed up in pure darkness as your blood-curdling nightmares haunt you until your very existence disappears without a trace.
Season zero was awesome to me. Dark Yuugi Ohh sounded like a calm and powerful Pharaoh unlike the card playing seasons where the pharaoh version sounds like a prickly hardass. The way it ended was bizarre though. I would think with dark and gruesome punishments to opponents of Yuugi an identity fusion between dark Yuugi and original Yuugi would be in order. The way it ended was bizarre and felt like a cop out.
Did someone mention D A R K N E S S ?
Give us a full sin counter of the 4Kids series pls.
Lol
Look up cvit, he goes through every season
Season 0 was my introduction to YuGiOh. I’m so grateful for that.
Honestly, those early volumes of the Yu-Gi-Oh manga are downright great comics. Highly recommended, even if you’ve never been into the card game stuff.
As a kid I grew up appreciating Yugioh the game and its monsters. As a adults I NOW appreciate Yugioh for its dark tones and violence associated with the card game.
7:24 I loved that scene in season 0. Yugi was a savage. I also heard that the card game in the original manga was a parody of magic the gathering.
The creator's personal story was super inspirational because I believe he made all of this later in life after many attempts. Just goes to show no matter how old you are, you can surpass your limits and do something great.
Looks like Tim's next video will be filmed from within Crunchyroll's Shadow Realm offices.
At least the rent will be cheaper there
the cards were changed in the US version of the anime because of laws. if the cards in the show looked exactly like the real life cards then the show would legally be considered an advertisement which cost more to air. so all the cards were changed to look slightly different than they do in real life.
Yeah, I always thought it was weird how they called him the "King of Games" even though he mostly played just the one
As a naive kid, I accepted it for the sole reason that he beat "Duke Devlin" at his own game (nevermind the VR MMOs because they just dueled in there). I did wish the series would implement new games into the show, so when I got my hands on s0 I was ecstatic.
@@MrDefault08 in a way they do make new games every series. They break the game with a new summoning and it gets further and further away from what it was. Xyz broke the game and that's when I tapped out(pendulums too but I stopped before those came out). I'm pretty sure the only reason we have "link" cards now is because they realize they broke the game with all the special summons
@@mattisixx1699 Agree with the broken format. I played again for the first time in a decade a couple months ago and my buddy put out 3 creatures on turn one. When I played something he'd destroy it without combat by getting rid of a "tuner" and then Id lose turn 2 or 3 wondering what even happened. I am not saying there seems to be no strategy (I simply dont understand all these Xyz's enough to see any) but I do prefer the classic version where you have a win condition or two- and you help it with cunning traps and strategic equips. I am not at all interesting in reading 100 new paragraph long card texts to find joy in the game anymore- I have gone to Magic: the Gathering xD
Love yugioh. I have all volumes of the manga (including spin-offs) and downloaded the Duel Links app.
*if anyone’s curious, I play a rose/aromage deck.
Sweet Sadly the Best I Could Do is Blue Eyes
I hate duel links
Kami Sama to each their own.
You should try ygopro instead of duel links. You have all cards available to you at the start(are updated pretty quick after the tcg cards actually come out), and it's fucking free! None of that 20 card deck microtransation bullshit. It's primarily a PC game but I do know they have apps for it on Android and iOS if you're looking to play it mobilie
For some reason, the idea of there never being a D-D-Duel hit me in the feels.
Combining a star chip glove and a duel disk is cursed. How you gonna mix duelist kingdom and battle city like that my dude.
If he only played with stone slabs instead of cards, so we get a bit of millennium world into the mix
I still gotta a bad feeling about Yugioh Sevens.
I'm one of the 5 that has knowledge of and has seen some of Season 0. It was insane. Yugi was just straight up murdering people that lost the games he played with them.
I see you're one of the other 5 peoples...
That dude in the first chapter of the manga is actually Tetsu Trudge. The same cop from 5DS.
I approve of John Naruto. That’s an excellent name!
John Naruto doesnt like Ramen either, thats too Japanese. He loves spaghetti! Especially with meatballs! Nothing beats spaghetti with meatballs!
This makes since to me now. Looking back I always felt like something was off. Or missing in the plot. It seemed odd how yugi would change and the foe would be scared shitless some times. But we had no explanation of why. And how his friends would be okay with him doing some kinda questionable stuff. But yeah. This explains why

Creeper: AND WHAT OF IT?!?
I first discovered Yu-Gi-Oh! from the manga, long before the anime was released. I got hooked on the series on the first volume, and eagerly awaited the next one each month. So I was somewhat surprised when the card game took over the show.
This is why the first thing that comes to my mind when hearing "Yu-Gi-Oh!" is the mindcrush. Such a shame that he stopped using it...
My deepest memory of yu-gi-yo was someguy stabbing his hand with money on it because he was greedy...
Good to see this! I definitely recommend the manga version, from start to finish (JP anime is already closer to the original, but still has many changes that are not for the better; including many fillers). The graphic style evolves quickly at the beginning, and you can spot plot inconsistencies; but not worse than in the anime, anyway. And you can feel the author's love for analog games. Even the tabletop RPG session with Bakura got me interested in games like Dungeons & Dragons in the first place.
Now for a few points:
- 14:13 Bandit Keith is just a nickname for Keith Howard, not an invention for the US version. I think it follows the tradition of duelists being named after their Deck's specialty, e.g. Dinosaur Ryuuzaki and Insector Haga, although we don't have real names for these other characters.
- 17:40 Fusing the Mammoth with the Blue Eyes is an effect of Fusion and the Arrow, not the Mammoth. Well, you cannot really do that in the real game either, although it would be cool. This is also a demonstration of the Element relationship, which makes its first appearance in the TV duel VS Pegasus (here, Mammoth's Dark element weakens Blue Eyes which uses Light). The Element relationship is not part of the standard game either, but it is used in some of the video games.
- Season 0 is also changing many elements from the manga, since Japanese TV also has their restrictions (and for not good reasons sometimes too). Now, you could argue that playing rope climbing on a roof is not much less dangerous than stabbing a stack of bills on your own hand.
- Note that Crunchyroll has now Season 1 with subs, but no Season 0. No license, I guess.
The FIRST thing that comes to mind when I hear YU! Gi! Oh! Is Dark Magician girls THIGHS
finger pointy guns, were taken to a whole new level with manga pegasus.
I started crying cuz the nostalgia... Those were the days. I remember my parents spent like 300 dollars on cards and stuff and I loved the anime.
Only 300?
the reason Yami always said "believe in the heart of the cards" was because the millennium puzzle increased the wearer's luck...
basically plot armor + jewelry
also, Nietzsche wasnt a nazi
Yeah, the Yugioh manga is quite dark compared to the Yugioh: Duel Monsters anime (both the original Japanese dub and the English dub). Even Season 0 is tame compared to the manga.
nah the manga is still tame to me, for teens.
@@leosunaquamoon compared to the anime?
@@sameash3153 compare to other mangas about games
You scared me for a sec. The white screen at 10:12 made me think my tv screen was absolutely filthy!
Having seen Season 0 twice, it really is a trip. I have no idea how anyone can read the manga or watch the show and think it is kid friendly. There is bullying (Yugi himself seems to be beat up about every school day), bribery, awful teachers, leacherous/questionable people pulling off crimes and ending up in Dark Games, murder, fires, and oh, cannot forget Shadi popping up out of nowhere. And then there is the fact that little Yugi has serious memory gaps from when the spirit of the puzzle takes over, most of the time to punish those who hurt his host or friends.
Not sure if he actually gets his memory back now that I think on it.
That said, it really has a marvelous array of games that often get used in the dark games. Regular cards, capumon, a pot containing a malevolent spirit, it goes on. All that variety just vanishes once DM gains traction.
Lastly, it features the Kaiba brothers both engaging in schemes themselves. Seto, as we all know, is a prick and arrogant, yet still one of the top favorites, green hair and all. Mokuba absolutely rigs his own matches. In that sense they are perfect for each other.
I could go on much , but I will stop :)
Tim is such a great host
This guy should be on television
Or not.. they would turn him into something else
The original manga is awesome, it's actually my favourite manga atm. I love Season 0, although it would have been even better if it fully adapted all the original volumes accurately.
did anyone else notice that the 5Ds series copied the "no named baddie" from the money stabbing incident, thats Officer Trudge
Thank you for trying to inform people of the origins of Yugioh. While 4Kids did make Yugioh a success, they brainwashed the majority of kids back then so bad that those kids-now adults cant even give the Japanese version of Yugioh and manga a try to learn the true story.
Its fake there is no true story
Fun fact

That bald piercing kid Marik mind controls actually killed his parents in his Canon.
It's pronounced Arc Five both in English and Japanese. As in V being the Roman numeral for 5.
If getting into differing mechanics, there really needs to be reference to that time that the moon (which is an equip card) raised the tide so water monsters can't be attacked so Yugi had his statue stab the moon and destroyed the magic card. Also explaining season zero is a chance to explain "yugioh the king of games": 遊戯 (yuugi) means game, and 王 (ou) means king. Literally "king of games", the idea from the start was that yugi's dark spirit was unbeatable at games of any type. Tim, I love your nerdy humor, that was the best du-du-du-duel rendition XD
I had the hots for Yugi and always couldn’t wait until he transformed to the older version

I remember first reading YGO on a Shonen Jump at a Book Fair. It blew my mind of how violent it was. I read through the Manga and I was afraid of all the Millenium Item Holders except Izchizu Istar. Every one of them including Kaiba were all Crazy!
I always wondered how they knew what their cards did without any description. Now I see they did have descriptions. America just expects us to overlook that detail.
I still watch it to fall asleep to, some nights. It will forever hold a place in my heart, especially watching it as a young girl growing up. Every weekday in the morning after Pokémon, then rush to school!

@@seqka711 There is no "vs". This is not a debate. It is pronounced ZE-AL. The X is silent. Just like the English dub needs to be consistent (Pronounced ZeXal wrong but Arc-V right) with the source material, you need to be consistent as well and not "let it pass". In Kingdom Hearts, there is a character named Zexion. The X is pronounced in the Japanese and is pronounced the same in English. Dont be a hypocrite.
@@rob19ny It's not hypocrisy.
4K Media pays licensing fees, and that license allows them to change whatever the heck they want. I respect that. They own that right, which makes both versions canonically correct.
I watch the shows in sub, of course. The dubs kinda suck, let's be real here. But if someone wants to call it Zexal, I don't care. The same way that I don't care if someone calls Jounouchi Joey or Aerith Aeris.
I don't call Ace Attorney Gyakuten Saiban. But I don't care which version other people use. The difference here is that Arc V is five in both versions. If you call it Gyakuten Saiban I don't care, but if you call it Adept Attorney, that would be wrong, obviously. The same way that calling Arc V "V" is wrong. But both versions of Zexal are correct, and 4K media paid a lot of money to make it so.

Those where the days when I used to feel things now the world seems without color.
So are we just ignoring Kaiba almost killing his brother a complete character (Anzu) the fact that the season 0 finished with a D&D game where every character represents the soul of its user like the time in the duel monsters where bakura does the same thing but now with the cards. Duel monsters while making retcons also references season 0 episode like how they became friends doenst change.
Seeing this on 2021 for the first time, I hope TIM is still employed, what a cool guy.
Well...that's unexpected. Yu Gi Oh Season 0 is pretty sure messed off.
it basically consist of yami yugi punishing bad people by challenging them to games that result in their death.
If you think that's bad, it's actually pretty watered down compared to the manga.
Going further into the origin of "Duel Monsters" being in the comic in the first place, from what I've read the creator had learned about and played Magic: The Gathering, and wanted to feature the game as one of the many games played in the manga. After outlining that chapter, they asked Wizards of the Coast if they could use the likeness, and WotC said... no. So instead of ditching it entirely, they just made up something similar but not technically infringing, and from there blossomed an actual competing card game to MTG.
Funny when you think about it. If they let them use the rights for this chapter then the card game wouldn't even be born. They somhow created their biggest rival in the card game market by themselves.
Yu-Gi-Oh season 0 was like the true feels of the manga"s dark nature ! 💜💜😈😈🙈🙈🙉🙊🧿

Here's the manga canon timeline (true story) created by Kazuki Takahashi:
Yu-Gi-Oh! manga > Transcend Game manga > The Dark Side of Dimensions
While the animes adapt the manga from start to finish, it changed things too much that it became it's own story. Literally 3 different canons (Manga, Yugioh 1998 anime, and Duel Monsters). Characters arent the same (Yugi and Jonouchi watch porno videos, Anzu loves Yami Yugi), different events (Why Yami Yugi stops using the puzzles power is explained, Kaiba doesnt appear in the final arc), altered duels (All gods summoned in 1 duel doesnt happen, Yami Yugi doesnt say the cards he wants before drawing it).
Note: If you've watched the anime already, then you can read Yu-Gi-Oh! R right after Battle City. Since R came after the manga finished, it hints at some stuff for the manga's final arc.
All gods summoned in the final duel didn't happen?
@@phil4863 No. Just Obelisk and Osiris.

While this video covers a lot (not anything that I didn't know, yes, I'm one of the five), it had some amateur mistakes.
1) Season 0 is not part of the Yu Gi Oh show we know. It was done by a different studio, actually (season 0 was done by Toei animation of the Dragon Ball fame, and any other Yu Gi Oh show is done Studio Gallop).
2) The text on the card was removed for a different localisation reason: You can't show a commercial product in a kid show. Sounds ridiculous, you must say. Transformers, He-Man and My Little Pony were commershows in the 80s. Well, the dolls you buy are replicas of characters from their shows. The cards in Yu Gi Oh were playing cards in real life you use to play the same game played in the show...
Long story short: 4kids couldn't show the cards as they were in real life, so they shanged it.
3) The game in the show was so different than the game we know because... It hasn't been invented in real life yet. As you said, Kaiba, rich dork supreme and his geeky Magic the Gathering knockoff were introduced early in the manga. It got popular so not only the game reappeared, by the time Pegasus was introduced it became a centerpieces of Yugi's world. IRL Konami started to make the game (after Bandai gave it a go. Forget about the forgotten season, we got a forgotten game), but since there weren't any official rules yet, Takahashi just made up rules for the Dualist Kingdom arc. Only by Battle City arc the rules were codified IRL, so the manga, thus the show, started playing by them.
4) As for the spinoffs, while dubbed GX stopped airing because 5D came along, 5D's story is much more complicated. Problems with the Japanese production, problems with 4kids themselves, It's a whole mess with 5D.
5) A bit petty, but Yu Gi Oh is doing pretty alrighty. It's not MHA, but the show is watched. At least watched enough to warrant more spinoffs. YGOTAS is strong (I mean, it is referenced in the comments. By CR) and the card game is number 4 in the world, right Behind MTG, Pokemon and KeyForge. So it's a bit more than 5 people who like it. Jab the fandom once, that's on us. Jab it repeatedly, and you'd look like an idiot bully. The kind Yugi had to deal with more than 25 years ago... Keep it classy...
lmao yugioh tcg is dead
@@baldursgateenjoyer So THAT is why the event attendence was rising!
I always wondered why the text of the cards are removed for the dub lool thanks for the info
@@maganhassan2627 You're welcomed! Japan doesn't have these rules, so the cards appear as they do IRL
"don't google the human centipede"
-googles the human centipede
what did it cost?
... -everything- a family friendly movie night with the family
So should I search it up, or....?
Try Cannibal Holocaust or The Hills Have Eyes or Thirteen Ghosts or Ninja Scroll or A Serbian Film, all of them are just as bloody and harmful and as absolutely amazing as Human Centipede.
@@Lana-Jae only if you're much older and used to extreme phycological torment and insane ideas that make you question Humanity and it's own ideals.
I would google image search "tubgirl" before "human centipede."
Cosmic Mitama The Ultimate o god that’s disturbing as hell....
You know what Toei Animations should do? With the series going as far as it did maybe it's time to reboot the anime? Basically remaking the Duelist Kingdom Arc but with the actual rules and implement new cards like Synchros, XYZs, Pendulums and Link monsters. And then from there they could do stuff that was either from the manga and/or make completely brand new Arcs. Basically lead the story in a new direction.
@harry gurry But the Waking the Dragon was one of the best arcs in YGO and it's filler.
Season 0 is actually really good and everyone should watch it
mrtomo Atem is a Full Blown Psychopath in that Series tho
@@Trxpamvs Yeah seriously he just straight gives people Brain Damage and PTSD lol

I love Yu-Gi-Oh! I duel with my Blackwing deck
Hmmm Didn't Realized that Anyone Real Use Blackwings any More Cool
@@windsonma8209 Blackwing is used online alot. Mostly having a tower monster with negate and destruction protection and 4k atk
I prefer Empty Jar
They did have up to five or six volumes of Yu-Gi-Oh from The original Dulest Kingdom ark uncut released on VHS and DVD, but the project was soon abandoned due poor sales and lack of distribution outside of stores like FYE and Sam Goody's
What do you know about the Japanese version of the actually a toned-down version of the manga what even a toned-down version of the first half
Another thing is that the Japanese version is also a more toned down than even the manga version, even in the second series. For instance, in the manga, when Malik controls Anzu and Jonouchi, he threatens Yami by saying that he will make Anzu swallow a capsule to make her kill herself. In that same exact arc, Malik also mind controls Pandora to kill himself. Both of these were toned down in the anime. The former was changed to Anzu threatening to kill Anzu with a crate (which I never liked since it makes him more like a Looney Toons character) and the whole subplot with Pandora was scrapped. Also, Pegasus died in the manga and lived in the anime...not sure why, really. The 4Kids version is basically a watered down version of an anime that was already watered down compared to the source material.
