Satoshi Kon's death was truly a tragedy for the world of cinema and animation.
To think how much he revolutionized and inspired the craft, in the relatively little time he had.... one cannot avoid wondering how much more he could have contributed to cinema, and what masterpieces he could have given us.

Yoshitoki Ōima - A Silent Voice (about a deaf girl)
Tatsuyuki Nagai - Anthem of the heart (about a girl loosing her ability to talk through a fairy)
Hiroyuki Okiura - A Letter To Momo (about a girl meeting 3 Yōkai )
Takahiro Omori - Hotarubi no mori e (about a girl meeting a "ghost" in a forest and becoming friends with him)
Keiichi Sugiyama - Origin - Spirits of the Past (dystopia movie, a young girl gets awaken after 300 years)
Akio Nishizawa - Symphony in August (story of a girl whos dream it is to sing)
All really great movies! :) tried to describe the main plot in as little words as possible...xD just a bit so you know what it is about

I read a koe no katachi (silent voice) manga and cried and smile along the way, was so hyped up abt the animation but was truly disappointed :( it doesn’t represent the anime too well. Don’t get me wrong, for those that haven’t read the manga its awesome but the manga its just wholesome. Though it is to be expected since adaptation of a manga is hard to execute.

    Miyazaki: every movie and series
Takahata: Grave of the fireflies, Only Yesterday, Pom Poko, Tale of princess kaguya
    Kondo: Whisper of the heart
Oshii: Ghost in the Shell, Angel's egg

Satoshi Kon: like Miyazaki, all of his works are phenomenal
Hosoda: Summer Wars, Wolf children, Mirai
Yuasa: Ping Pong, Devilman crybaby, Tatami Galaxy
    Ideaki Anno: Evangelion, Nadia

@@Man_Myth_Barbalazos Absolutely. I think he is special because, not only he was brilliant regarding the visual side and he had a genius way of directing and editing (I recommend the video of the channel "every frame a painting" about him, very well done), but also beacuse his works present unique, very profound and solid philosophical and psychological insights. And above that, the form of his works match perfectly with their substance. In this way, I think you could easily confront him, without any shame, with some of the most important filmmakers of all time, such as Kubrick, Fellini, Lynch, Bergman or others.

One person I was sad to see not make this list: Naoko Yamada! Of course, she’s relatively new, but her work is incredible. The depth of humanity that went into A Silent Voice is part of what makes it such a wonderful movie. In addition, female anime directors are few and far between, and with the recent KyoAni tragedy the studio could use the support. That’s not to say that her work’s appeal lies in these things alone. It’s beauty speaks for itself.

I am split on Makoto Shinkai, though. On one hand, he has this beautiful poetic use of elements like rain and often incorporates them into some hidden symbolism, like in Voices of a Distant Star. It's a bit like Tarkovsky. On the other, the characters and the narrative tends to tunnel vision on a single relationship in an obsessive and unhealthy way, like in Voices of a Distant Star or She and her cat. I find that maddening.

as a novice to the genre, having really only seen the stereotyped stuff (SAO, NGE, Haruhi, etcetc) i was not expecting to see Perfect blue, an oddball movie that showed up at the local video rental place in the early 00's (and as quickly vanished again) on the list. i thought at the time it was something very unusual but special. glad to see i wasn't wrong.

Perfect Blue and Paprika are ironically considered "stereotyped stuff" aswell because they were extremely well received by audiences and critics alike and have also one of the best musical compositions. They are very famous now and therefore "mainstream" but not in the typical way because they are old and nieche in theory.

Garden of Words came at just the right point in my life, where instead of identifying with the male character like I ordinarily might, I identified with the female character. That stairwell scene at the end made me cry.

Shinkai is a good director who could be great. Even understanding the Japanese love for melancholy. The bittersweet nature of his works are often unfocused best represented by 5 cm a second. And his best work, I believe, is garden of words which is a 45 min masterpiece of story telling and animation.

glad to see Tokyo Godfathers getting recognition, got a copy in a bargain bin not knowing exactly what it was and it's one of the best finds I ever had, I agree it's a lot more relatable than Paprika, which i enjoyed a lot as well but are very different films.

I'd personally like to add Naoko Yamada to this list. She got her directorial debut with K-ON! in 2009, and her style developed over time, culminating in the followup movie to Tamako Market, called Tamako Love Story in 2014. In 2016, she then went on to direct Koe no Katachi, or A Silent Voice in the west.

All of those were very good choices.
Satoshi Kon's works were a favorite of mine, most notably Millennium Actress and Paprika. And your description of how he looked at society was spot on. He did have a critical eye, showing us... ourselves, in all our imperfect glory.

    • @BeyondGhibli

He was truly something else. As fantastical as all of his films are, its when Kon comes down to earth that his work speaks the loudest.

All great directors with great films. I’ve yet to see all of them except for Satoshi Kon’s work (minus Millennium Actress) and I have to say that he was a great director. The world lost a lot with his early passing. Perfect Blue and Paprika are really great films that study the human psyche and certain elements of the society. In particular Japanese society but also modern society at large. And Tokyo Godfathers is an amazing film that does that and so much more. It manages to be both touching and uplifting simultaneously. You really grow to care for the main characters and get to understand how they ended up in their situation and you hope that they can make it. And at the end of the film through their act of goodness and thanks to a little Christmas miracle they all find a chance at regaining aspects of their old lives by reconnecting with their estranged loved ones. Despite dealing with a rough subject matter like homelessness it ends up being a feel good film in the end.
