@@McRemmyBaby if your going 5 channel then an amp for the sub is necessary. But 45 watts rms at 4 ohms is good for all stock speakers and even mid range aftermarket since they will be using a lower impedance like 2 or 3 ohms.

Questions, Sony also does not support the ability to shift the Home Status Bar (Apple CarPlay) from Left to RIght for regions where the steering is on the right side.
Pioneer allows this setting change in the internal settings option.
At least Sony didnt go resistive screen with this one

Thanks for posting an honest unboxing/review along with the amp dynos. Honestly, Sony, Pioneer and Kenwood have all stagnated in their head unit features over the last three years. Now that the majority of demand is for smart-phone media sources, there really isn't any new feature to be added. But cmon Sony, how about some custom wallpaper uploading capability?

Parking break lock out is more useful if you leave the connection from the unit off and hanging out the dash so you can just connect it to the ground below your vehicle when stoped instead of pulling the parking break

I love your videos. I recently updated my XAV-AX7000 to Firmware 1.11 and I used WebLink for the first time. You guys are always talking about how slow and choppy it is and for me that wasn't the case at all at least not on my unit paired with my Google Pixel 3 XL. It's reasonably fast and isn't choppy in my experience but I guess it's based on your phone and head unit from what I read in many reviews. I can finally play videos in the car when I'm parked. (Technically anytime with parking brake lockout) I do practice safe driving.

Are you sure max undistorted volume is 45 for preamp rca outputs? Somebody said that at volume 49 there is no distortion.
Reasons why I haven’t purchased this unit and will be waiting for the next. 1. No custom wallpapers. 2. No HDMI. 3. It’s not HD. 4. No CarPlay Bluetooth Connectivity. This unit had great potential but it flunked it. Can’t wait for the next one hopefully it’ll be better

After jumping though hoops to install this into my best friends 2006 Electra Glide Ultra Classic with the very poorly
manufatured Metra double din inner dash kit ... The Radio having many glitches It finaly failed after the first time out in the rain heading to Sturgis 2022 so now he's ridding back to Florida without tunes. The entire experience with Metra customer service was a bust! they never addressed any of are concerns about the fitment isues so I dont recomend going this route if you have a older bike. As far as the Sony we did contack them and they told us that the radio IS NOT waterproof and they were right! the screen malfuntion and screen became water logged and the radio failed just out of warranty when it encountered the first rain on the road. The factory radio lasted in full working condition till the day I removed it for this install. When the bike gets back we will have to find a replacement for it.
You need to get a waterproof radio, you’ll have nothing but trouble

I could be wrong but I think the main market for this is motorcycles & similar things that have issues installing amps.
There's only one video input so it Looks like I'll have to lose the Honda Lane Watch video input which would normally activate with the left turn signal.

I'm looking for something just a little better that also has play store availability. It should also have handlebar volume control at least if App selection from the handlebar is available that would be a plus as my Harley has volume on left mode on right.

Why can’t everything be Bluetooth.
Having to have the phone connected makes the battery hot after a while as well as the life of the battery. Makes no sense.
yeah but then that introduces another problem: battery life. Bluetooth + nav for instance, will tank a lot of phones relatively quickly. I'm with you though; it'd be nice to have some android client in the head unit that does a handshake with the phone but then handles most of the processing.
Wait what? It should only be as hot as in normally gets during charging. Once it’s fully charged it would only be kinda warm. It only degrades your battery as much as plugging it in over night would. I agree that wireless CarPlay is nice but saying it harms your phone to use wired CarPlay is just not true.

@Quality Mobile Video thanks for the review. This is the BEST review of the Sony AX7000 that I have came across! As much as I really want to pull the trigger & buy this HU I keep taking myself out of it due to the price. I feel Sony really missed the mark in 2 areas on this model: 1. At the $600 price point It lacks too many features that they could've easily given the consumer ie HD radio, wireless mirroring, custom wallpapers from phone or USB drive, volume knob, just to name a few. Even if they'd not given any of those features & just added a CD/DVD player to it I could then easily justify buying it while it us currently on sale for $499 but it being on sale & lacking so much I'm still having a difficult time committing to the purchase. (I didn't even include its missing HD screen quality as you did)
2. I personally feel Sony totally missed the mark pricing this in the $600 category considering its 2020 & so many other HU in this price range have loads more features. Of course they do not have a class D amp built in producing 45-50 rms per channel but 4 channel amps w/comparable output & even more output than this HU are inexpensive. I feel Sony has tried to rely too much on the consumer just being happy with the higher power output & in doing so chose to skimp on giving consumers other features.
Just my .02 cents. If I am wrong feel free to comment letting me know something I failed to consider. I still have the urge to try this HU or even one of Sony's 'High Power' single din HU. Maybe I'll change my mind & commit. Oh & another issue I have is with the customer ratings/reviews of this amplifier both on the Sony website as well as Crutchfield. Seems so many ppl have given low ratings or poor reviews mainly in regards to 'Output Error' message & HU shutting off when turning up to higher volume levels. Which was a BIG turn off for me since I listen to my music at HIGH levels daily. If it shuts off at loud volume levels that seems to really negate the whole point of paying the extra $200 or more just for built in class D amp. Seen several ppl having other problems with the AX7000 but 'Output Error' seems to be most common. Surely all of those having the output error issue & the HU randomly powering off didn't fail to run the extra 12 volt constant power direct to the battery as Sony instructs... Long comment lol sorry.

Quality Mobile Video is there any downside to putting the marine model mex-100bt Sony headunit in my car? Haven't seen anyone use marine HU in their vehicles. I would love to find the MEX-GS820BT since it had CD Player but seems its been discontinued. Can't even find one used on ebay, Amazon or anywhere else...😥

You can do music through Bluetooth, yes.

How many watts RMS output for the subwoofer?
Most are class AB, Sony high power models are class D.

Most likely to organize the cables behind the HU. I would absolutely recommend the Sony XAV line. I have two friends with Sony XAV-AX100’s and they absolutely love them. The head unit is very understated but it sounds wonderful and the OS is very simple and basic.

The built in amp is a huge draw for me. My 07 Si has a built in amp and premium audio with tweeters and sub. So anything that replaces the stock head unit would require an amp to compete with what is already there factory. The built in amp lets could let me use the easily available amp bypass harness and not have to completely rewire the car for a new amp to keep the car to keep the sub.
Since you brought up some of the negatives of the unit, is there a better unit you would suggest that includes the powerful built in amp that can drive a sub and 6 speakers? Looking for something with all the modern Carplay features and HD Radio if possible
Honestly this may be your best bet. We give all reviews cons to show we're not biased. It's still a great stereo, and the subwoofer direct connection is very unique and so isn't the power.
Just installed this unit on my pop's bike. It does not have a GPS, navigation and most other functions must come from your phone. Break your phone and your left with Glorified FM radio. Also it is touch screen but has a row of buttons across the bottom. While trying to set it up I would have to use these hard to read buttons because no one screen buttons would bring me out of the page I was on. Not water proof as you can see from other videos and much less functionality than many other 100-250$ units
How does this unit compare to the Pioneer DMH-WC6600NEX? I know the Pioneer has wireless Apple CarPlay and HD Radio, but those are the only advantages I can see.
In terms of expandability, the DMH-WC6600NEX has a lot more possibilities. The XAV has no video inputs so screen mirroring to it is a little more complicated. The DMH has RCA AV inputs. But the DMH is a modular unit, so there is not guarantee you'll find a dash kit for your make/model/year.

Just installed it on my 18 Harley. I went for a ride but the tornado like rain made me go back home about 3 minutes. I will say install was a breeze and the pro's and cons he mentioned I have noticed as well. The other one I would say is the volume control using the "steering wheel" control lags. BAD!!!!!

UPDATE: went on three hour tour (three hour tour) . It worked as it should and is louder than stock radio. I did notice you can not do side to side with google map and music. I had to use APPLE map and music. Google maps/music still played the music, it just did not read it on split screen.

I agree with most of the gripes in the comments section. In particular, the comments regarding wireless CarPlay. However, research suggests that wireless CarPlay is only offered by Pioneer and Kenwood in their premium $1100.00 and up HU's. The most prominent reality is that our smartphones are vastly superior to any car HU, regardless of how little or much you spend in car audio. So it's a downgrade from your smartphone and a subtle upgrade from your factory HU, which is a total mind***k :O(

I just bought this and had it installed. I am not sure how to use the subwoofer. Does it show that if you power the sub you can only use 2 speakers?
If you use a sub with it you have to wire both left speakers together and both right speakers together. You loose the functionality of having front to back volume adjust but it’s still a 4 speaker stereo setup.

@@manojkule7055I don't know what your speakers is but this is what I would recommend you do. You can use the AX7000 to power your 4 speakers and get a mono amplifier to power your subwoofer. I assume that your subwoofer consumes a lot of power than the AX7000 can feed it so get a separate amplifier for it.
@@manojkule7055 in addition to that, you should match or higher your amplifier RMS than your Subwoofer. You should also buy a proper amplifier wiring kit for it you don't want to constantly pop a fuse or better yet get a small breaker it is the best solution to prevent breaking anything.

I'm going to have to disagree with Crutchfield. The XAV-AX5000 and XAV-AX7000 are both Double DIN stereos. Both can fit. According to Metra, your model can actually fit either a single din or double din stereo. So really, you can put any stereo you want in your car. Here are the dash kits options:

I have a 2016 Suzuki Swift, the microphone is built in on the roof. With this head unit, can you still keep using the same microphone that's already installed? I don't want to use an aftermarket one.
Unfortunately, you'll most likely have to use the microphone included with the stereo

Does the reverse camera activate automatically when you change to R gear or do you need to press the button on the screen manually? And does that safety reminder pop up every time the screen is turned on? Thanks.
The wiring harness features a "Reverse In" which you will connect to the car's reverse light feed, this will activate the backup camera when the car gets put into reverse. Also connect the accessory from the backup camera to the accessory on the wiring harness. In the stereo's system settings, set the camera input to "Normal" meaning it will have a positive trigger and switch to camera as soon as you go into reverse. This is a great video to learn more!

I have a 2017 JKU, and purchased this head unit for its boosted internal power and use of Apple CarPlay. In the future, could I plug in a subwoofer that has its own internal amp? Such as, the Alpine PWE-S8 (subwoofer with a built-in Class D amplifier (120 watts RMS/240 watts peak)). Or do i have to go the typical external amp, leading to a woofer? Trying to keep things tight with the smallest amount of space taken up. Thank you.

I just installed this on my 2015 street glide special with a pair of jl c2 650x in the fairing. I'm not that impressed, I will be adding an amp and lower fairing speakers. Wish I would of just got the ax5000 and spent that extra 200 towards a good amp
