    Those Ewing teams never had enough scoring threats other than Ewing. Charles Smith, Oakley, Mason at forward were not getting it done. They kept changing point guards. They had Mark Jackson, Strickland, Doc Rivers, Harper, etc. And Starks definitely was not a legit #2. Dude was a streaky, inconsistent scorer.
    You can't blame Ewing because he more than held his own against opposing centers. I don't recall Olajuwon dominating him in the finals.

    Ewing is one of the best Knicks to ever wear the jersey. He was a first overall who actually lived up to it. I used to get on him back in the day but looking back now I can appreciate what he brought to the team. I really think he was cursed with some bad luck and self-destructive tendencies by the Knicks. They were built to win and could beat any top team on any given night back then. But some of the bad breaks were: Olajuwon blocking Starks in game 6, Charles Smith can't make a wide-open layup in 93 vs the Bulls, Charlie Ward, Houston AND Ewing get suspended for gm 6 vs Miami (Larry Johnson & Starks forced to sit gm 7), Ewing's finger roll bounces off the rim in gm 7 vs Pacers and in 99 he partial tears his left Achilles' tendon while the team goes on to the finals without him and lose to the Spurs. In any of those years, they could have won it all.

      That first Houston Championship team was no better than the Knicks, man for man of course the difference being Hakeem having a much better low post game (high percentage) where the big man is supposed to be as opposed to Ewing not having a low post game so he was forced to take outside jumpshots. When they weren't falling oh well. Ewing was a reluctant passer who didn't trust his teammates, so he didn't make anyone around him better!!

      @jaleelel-shabazz6736 2 года назад +2

      @ Drippin Sauce: Ewing had a weak low post game because he had clumsy feet and small hands for a 7 footer. That's why he became a jump shooter. There were many big men before him who had good mid-range jump shots: Bob Lanier, Nate Thurmond, Kareem, Dave Cowens, Walt Bellamy, Bob Rule, and the greatest Knick center of all time Willis Reed. These big men chose to rely on the low post high percentage shot, as opposed to shooting the out side jumper. The days of the traditional center in the post are gone and it has destroyed the art of the game.

Where as the Knicks had no one but Ewing to guard Hakeem and keep thorpe off the boards. Second Horry, Kenny Smith, Maxwell and Cassell were better players and could actually shoot more consistently then every player on the Knicks outside of Pat. Pat for years was the best shooter on the knicks team. Those teams had horrible shooters. Then they struggled defending the perimeter in that finals harper was getting his butt cooked by rookie cassell once he came in. Cassell caused so much havoc once he came in the game. The stories I asked about the NBA greats being so young in the 90’s didn’t seem real to this day. From watching my cousin by marriage playing on tv and actually spending time with him when I use to go see him in the off season was amazing. When I took basketball serious I came out one year to his training camp he had with Rolando Blackman and I did real good at the camp and that sparked my NBA dream but when I got older I never grew over 5’9 and I got side tracked because I started working at 15 but that part of my childhood was golden lol.

    This is silly. Patrick never got a ring because he never had a legitimate #2 scoring option, one who commanded double teams. J. Starks would have been a devastating #3 like Andrew Toney, say, but even Michael needed Scotty, Moses needed Dr. J (or the other way around), etc., etc., The only time Patrick got to face a team without a #2 of their own it was him up against Hakeem--who was a better center, face it. The Knicks never gave him what he needed so it was ALWAYS him, sweating his behind off at the end of games, drained, and missing free throws because of how they worked him like a $2 ho. By the playoffs, against the league's elite competition, he was NEVER going to beat the more complete teams, I don't care HOW much leadership he showed or didn't show. Though I WILL say he should have shaved his head with everyone else that year they got to the finals without him. That was self-centered and weak.

      That’s the thing, the teams he lost to in the EC were loaded. The Pistons had Isaiah and Joe in their prime with a team just as rough and tumbled. Then you had obviously Chicago who had two players in the all time 75 with Bill Cartwright and Horace Grant surrounded by one of the greatest supporting cast of all time. Lastly, you had the Pacers- team that was lead by the one of the best closers in the history of the game in Reggie and the Dunking Dutch man who could be a top 5 big in the league when healthy…
      I’d say the only time he was outplayed and truly blew his title shot was against the Rockets. Hakeem had a very similar team in 94 but even then- Vernon Maxwell and Starks we’re pretty similar guys and Mario Ellie was so clutch that playoffs from three.

He played magnificently & consistently while starks literally was amazing than awful than amazing than awful. Sadly game 6 he had a spectacular 4th but then game 7 fell on his worst day ever. I still wonder why riley didnt tell him to stop shooting. I know he had no faith in davis or blackman as riley to his detriment goes to a 6 man rotation even if they are getting blown out he leaves his starters on when he should be resting them.

    Got news for you Derek Harper…not that some things couldn’t have been done better, but in ‘94 the Knicks over-performed in the finals against the Rockets 🚀. Rockets 🚀 were the better team from the outset of the season winning 14-15 straight games and they had Olajuwon who was better than Patrick. I don’t see how you can blame Patrick for too much isolation ball 🏀 when Olajuwon’s defense pretty much took him out of the series offensively for the most part. Harper and Starks did most of the scoring with some timely baskets by Oakley. I’m not blaming Patrick, but his game had to be more efficient for the Knicks to win. It just wasn’t enough to defeat a better Rockets team that got great contributions from Sam Cassel, Carl Herrera, Ottis Thorpe and Robert Horry. Olajuwon played like an MVP, but his wasn’t the only performance that cost the Knicks. More so, it was the composite play of the supporting cast that won a very close hard fought series. Disappointing, but nothing to be ashamed of.

GREEEEEEAAAAAT!!! The chemistry they had was scary. I just loved the “big men banging under the basket” type of basketball. Post moves and the awareness of double teams were fun. You could read plays and just knew where the ball would end up. Barely any dribbling. Off the ball movements and great ball movement around the defense. Man to man was played back then also. No lazy zone defense. Either you run your ass chasing or be smart and switch and hope that Ewing wasn’t on a small guard or small forward because he’d shoot over the top or take it to the rack!!✊🏼🙏🏼🤙🏼 Miss those days man😔

    I remember the 94 Finals like yesterday!! I'm from Houston and I will agree, the Knicks were technically the better team.. if I'm not mistaken, we were like the 6th seed that year coming into the playoffs.. but never underestimate the heart of a Champion...Nothing like 90s basketball.. !!! The entire Knicks starting 5 are legends in my eyes.. Much love for all the Knicks fans ..

    Harper was a great player, 5 time champion who made a lot of the right plays offensively and defensively. It was hard to see how badly he was hampered by injuries, and inspiring to see how he battled through all of that anyway.

    100 percent right about making the right play. It’s been a while, and I understand basketball a lot better now then when I was watching Pat play. But if it is a fact that Pat failed to make the right play down the stretch of games, then Harper is 100 percent right about that too.

    Ewing was the strongest and biggest man in the Knicks team yet he spent his time
    25 feet away from the basket shooting jumpshots, only Oakley left for rebounds and
    put back layups. To win you need a big man inside Ewing played like a guard.

    • @williamdavis9562
      @williamdavis9562 2 года назад +1

      @Franklin NJ, Ewings career offensive rebound numbers say otherwise.
      Teams need guys like Oakley, high motor low skill. But you can't have 4 guys like that on the court and expect to win a championship.

    Pat was a SUPER STAR!!! Even his "Ewings" was selling as well as Jordans! At Georgetown, Pat started wearing the Nike T Shirt under the jersey and he was one of the ones that pushed Georgetown University in having "The Georgetown Hoyas" Air Force One. I believe the first university to do so. -LAKERS'80- 🤜🏿🤛🏿
