    Navy Seals abide by a code that no man is left behind. Termite-hunting ants abide by a similar code. A new study reveals that after a raid on a termite nest, the injured ants are cared for by their comrades. If kept by themselves, 80 percent of injured ants died. But if cared for by their nest-mates for even an hour, only a tenth died. Another finding of the study reveals how the ants prioritize who gets cared for and who doesn’t. In human health care, doctors decide which patients need to be helped the most. With ants, it’s the exact opposite. The injured ants themselves decide if they should be treated or not. When no help was in sight, injured ants made a beeline for the nest. But when nest-mates were near, they stumbled and fell, appearing “more injured” as a way to attract aid. But the ants play up their injuries only if they sensed that their problems were minor enough to be treated. If ants were mortally injured, they refused to cooperate, flailing their legs around when probed or picked up, forcing their helpers to abandon them. The mortally wounded ants choose to die rather than have energy and resources wasted on their futile rehabilitation. This discovery marks the first time non-human animals have been observed systematically nursing their wounded back to health.

    These termite-ants have their own unique health system where they care for each other's injuries, even if it sometimes means you refuse care. What similarities and differences do you find between this relationship the ants have with each other and the patient-doctor interactions humans have?

      excuse me, the term sacrifice here is not accurate, this is WILDLY misleading. It's not a conscious "sacrifice", how dumb is that. Ants feel pain. when they lose too many limbs, they thrash around like any other animal would. Would you be calm and easy to transport if you were missing both your arms and a leg? Even if you had tourniquets?
      I think not, I think you would panic and go crazy. Which means the medics wouldn'tt waste time with you.
      "sacrifice?"

      More or less. They are polymorph. That means there are bigger and smaller ants. The bigger ones are those who carry wounded and termites back to the nest. I would consider them more as "soldier" even if there is no real "soldier" caste in Megaponera

      In our (western) societies death is a taboo topic. Many humans decided to die when there was no real help or chance at hand. Not only old people, but during war times too. Self sacrifice for others isn't unknown for humans either.

      They dont amputate limbs. Those get amputated by the termites. Erik Frank is still working on the way the treatment works and probably he will publish something about it soon. But for example ants with heads of termite soldiers sticked to their legs get treated just by other ants biting off the soldiers head in the nest.

    • @Shottyshotgun1

    Maybe they are not sacrificing themselves but simply freaking out because they are in so much pain from there legs being bitten off.

    • @takumi2023
      @takumi2023 6 лет назад +6

      good point but they did test the theory with minor injury. unless the researchers can force an ant to be healed i don't see how this hypothesis can be proven.
      Another point to make is that unattended injured ants die 90% of the time they say in the video but now they're saying ants with major injury are refusing treatment...so doesn't this skew the data. i hope they separated these two variables.

    • @SGz_Eliminated
      @SGz_Eliminated 6 лет назад +23

      Perhaps. Perhaps its just humans applying our social constructs to other creatures. Also creatures like Ants don't really feel 'pain', its starts to get more and more complicated the deeper in you go but basically ants don't feel pain but they are aware of being damaged. So why would ants be lashing out when coming into contact with other hive members, doesn't make much sense unless they're doing it deliberately.
      A hive mentality is a difficult concept for us humans to understand because we're largely self serving but Ants are not, they place the hive above their own lives. So it'd make sense for them to refuse treatment if they believe themselves to be too damaged, its not like the other ants have diagnostic tools to determine chance of fatality on other ants, but they can certainly tell themselves if they're dying.

    • @riftis2210
      @riftis2210 6 лет назад +8

      They wouldn't be lashing around because they're freaking out, they haven't got the mental capacity for that. They are just acting how they feel they aught to, which is driven by their genetics, and it works out in the best interest of the hive.

      kerry reopel it’s actually been proven that insects cannot feel pain, don’t get me wrong that doesn’t make them dumb only they never cry, where as crustaceans like crabs and shrimp do feel pain

      A lot of people, the West included, appreciated the society of ants, and how they worked together to do some pretty epic stuff.
      Then communism rolled around, and capitalists used ants as an example of how communism is actually terrible, because ants are "ugly" and "...red!".
