Low oil pressure, loud noises, and engine codes galore, something is very wrong. Is it the notorious timing chain guides? Oil pump failure? Let's find out!

great content! thanks for sharing! I agree with your theory & I am not going to be one of those who does this job right & then forgets to clean the oil pickup because of your video! also, i had to replace all gaskets, orings, grommets, tc guides, tensioner(s), powers steering hoses, OSV, PCV, intake gaskets, oil pan gasket, VC gaskets, plugs, transmission oil cooler/hoses, coolant reservoir & cap, fan temp sensor, basically all the broken plastic & hard rubber parts, fresh oil & coolant & prob a few other things i missed... lol but this all seems reasonable on a 2000 740i, but i think they can be great cars if properly maintained & all the rubber & plastic parts being replaced (as is the case with any older euros or anything really...) also garage kept (preferably) just my experience FYI.. Thanks again for sharing! It was fun to watch!

Hey Josh! Love the videos on the e39 you've posted! BMW, no doubt, is best known for its amazing inline 6 motors, but these are great v8 motors as well. The biggest issue is the chain guides like you mentioned, and for the later models, sometimes you get vanos failure as well. Annoying two seperate problems lol i take care of myn and always on top of it how the motor is and thankfully i have an amazing mechanic and friends that know and threw their knowlege to me when i bought the car. Once you fix those issues and done correctly the car will give its love back for a long time. Also, I had a 98 528i for 9 years prior to my 02 540i 6spd i have now. Hopefully, you find one that is well maintained, unlike this neglected one. Once you fix it, and god forbid you come across that problem. It's an amazing drive and experience. This and the e46 are just iconic bmws to experience and to honestly keep. Cheers, josh! M62TU all day 😂

I had the exact same issue, I bought a 540 and before I destroy the engine I dropped the oil pan and found plastic pieces and the pickup screen was little bit clogged, so I ordered all the parts to do the job and took it apart only to find out that everything was done they just haven't cleaned the debris from previous guides very weird but similar to your issue.

    Josh M3,
A compelling conclusion to this series. A series of mysteries. BMW reclamation car got pricey, what! What's the prob? Able to fix the Prob? Will it Run? Will it Drive?, Will it survive? When do we see another video? Will there be another video? Will JM3 have found an assistant, from a local college - give gals an equal opp, What's troubling this motor? Interesting, E39 interesting.
Video could use needs a disclaimer, "Don't do this on a working engine" while videoing prying open seals and stuff. "This E39 is a parts car" something
. . . such a mystery buster, previous owner is working into the motor, incorrect timing on cam, but somewhat knowledgeable to attempt that. knows that dropped in plastic and stuff getting into the motor will be chewed up (or ran vehicle without an oil filter), and being metal will be on the bottom of the pan, except for being sucked up against gravity, wouldn't have severely interfered with oil flow there. The O-ring was a new introduction of a clogging element. if a piece of a circular o-ring is lodged longwise in the tube, it would curl into a helical twist, oil is now being pulled into the tube in a swirl, this again is a lower pressure (bernoulli?) and metal is now swirled into the tube. Or partially clogged but functional, the revved engine and that was a bernoulli effect of alot of oil under engine revving pressure caused low pressure that enabled the last piece of detritus to clog the intake tube. perhaps. Oil Pressure sensor sends info to CCM and ECU Motronic and with On-board computer (OBDII) (turns on console warnings and puts BMW in "Limp Mode"
(LOL, I have to recall those acronyms, ECU Electronic Computer Unit? by Bosch, CCM? critical compoment module?)
I wasn't able to list your two prior videos for this vehicle on more than BimmerForum.com. Surprisingly easy to just paste the ruclips.net/video/MVSq6857RiQ/видео.html . . . as a video attachment into the comment area. The video preview image shows up in the comment area and I type "here is some interesting E39 video content, go see it . . . " and click. Posted.
RUclips "settings" enables you to select videos "thumbnail previews," to display at the end of this video, you might link your two in this interesting E39 BMW series, in addition to relying on RUclips algorithms to display the two video in the series. (~20 total settings)

Ahhh you sound like you have an engineering or physics background bringing Bernoulis equation into things! Brings me back to my engineering undergrad days! A very detailed theory you bring up here. Im not aware if E39s are smart enough to throw themselves into limp mode after seeing low oil pressure. I do think they could be! Nonetheless it was a basketcase engine regardless. Thank you for sticking around through the series and leaving these awesome comments. I truly enjoyed reading through them. i think your theory has gotta be right...whats crazy about the TC guides is ive seen 540s+e38s have 200k plus miles on original guides with no issues, but other people did TC guide replacement at 80k (not preventatively)....when i called around Miami area I was quoted between $3,000-$6,500 for TC guide replacement+vanos rebuild.
Most told me it would be 30 total hours labor. I have an '99 e38 right now m62 with 179k miles on original guides still goin strong. 4 owners before me also. I have seen a lot of people say environment that they are run in/heat temperatures can be a major factor more so than mileage with the guides failing.
Thanks so much for the time n effort and info put into these they are extremely helpful....from the look of your enthusiasm it seems like you would jump at any opportunity to save more m62's in the future hahahaha. If you ever have the patience/interest in doing one more m63 TC guide PLEASE throw me a you quote if you ever are interested in doing it because just peace of mind knowing that this integral part of the engine work was done right is worth more than any amount of $ if you really love these ha

$3,000-$6,500 is CRAAAAAAAAAAAAAZY. Are they using gold-plated timing tools or something? 30h of labor in Bulgaria is like $750 lol. So the total + all the parts and everything wouldn't be more than $1500-$2000. You also get a fully equipped M62B44TU with changed VANOS seals, TC job done etc. for like $1500-$2000. Yeah that is really interesting seeing the discrepancies in mileage and how long they last. Climate/ environment makes sense though, your in a humid warm climate year round, plastic likes that. This car came from Wisconsin, meaning 6 months of frigid temps, 4 months of hot temps, and a couple of in the middle. So makes sense that this engine needed guides before 140k miles. That labor rate makes sense too, 100-200$ an hour for labor is not unusual even in Chicago. And at that time the price makes sense.
