Thanks for this upload, Fred; perfect marriages of movie and music in both cases, I reckon.Funny, I always used to think Gene Hackman was born middle-aged when I saw him in the 70s... but now when I watch The French Connection (after seeing him in decades of brilliant performances) I'm shocked that he looks so -- how can I put it? -- so young!
It is "raw". Reeks of New York in the early '70s. Listen to that trumpet as it takes us on a gambol through the traffic . This soundtrack is a masterpiece. Lounge music and street music . I just wish that Friedkin filmed it in black and white so as to underscore the grittiness of the location.
Here presented are excerpts of the requested Don Ellis milestone avantgarde-jazz film scores for the two French Connection movies, starring Gene Hackman, who would win an Academy Award for his performance and Roy Scheider, who also stars in the first movie. The award-winning first movie was followed by a sequel four years later and in my opinion, a pretty good one! Enjoy!
Sequel is damn good imho too. The fella who plays Hackman’s boss is the real guy upon whose big NYPD heroin bust, Popeye’s story is based… we even get to hear the veteran cop deliver his _”picking your feet in Poughkeepsie”_ line with which he’d bamboozle suspects. The fellow cop whom Gene takes a swing at is Bill Hickman who did all the actual stunt driving in the movie, and also drove the Dodge Charger that Steve McQueen’s Mustang chases in Bullit.
I`m a German PI for several decades. The soundtrack is rocket fuel for me... It has all elements of a T r u e Detective. Total determination when the moment arrives to get the bad guy.... . This movie, Gene Hackman and the real Popeye Doyle will not be forgotten in a 100 years.

They're derived from the "subway" track, where Doyle tails Frog One from his hotel to the subway shuttle. They turn up elsewhere in the film, when Doyle finally confronts Frog Two on the staircase, and when they stake out the parked Lincoln overnight. They have never turned up on any soundtrack release I know of. I assume those cuts were lost in the 30 years before one was finally pressed.
I love the man French Comnection but honestly, I wish there was a version like what's in the movie. No trumpet solo. I like this version but wish I could get what's in the movie also.
Check out D Ellis’ soundtrack of The Seven Ups(1973)film starring Roy Scheider , best car chase ever and incredible eerie music ,classic grungy 70’s NY. Somewhat same team that produced Bullitt & French Conn.
ted turner founder of cnn etc was great?? Bobby Fischer was great. Ted turner was great??? think about Mr!Both made great but just think I vote for Bobby Fischer!
I remember when i first watched this masterpiece, the opening track caught me by the throat.
Fantastic music, Don Ellis what a master, Gene Hackman and Roy Schneider outstanding 👌👌👌👌
Roy Scheider not Schneider.☝
I made a comment on one of the videos, Ellis should’ve gotten an award for that film .
As far as I'm concerned, The Soundtrack should have won the Oscar too!!!
Great music for both films. Very striking in terms of drama, building tension and suspense and giving the perfect "vibe".
Amazing. The last 5 mins especially- Don Ellis was a genius
Should've won the Oscar
Deserved Best Picture Oscar and Best Actor Oscar for Gene Hackman ("The French Connection").
RIP William Friedkin,1935- 2023.

Great 🎶 from Great 🎥 !
Brilliant stuff.
One of Gene Hackman's greatest roles.
Yes sir
Definitely!
The character he plays there is quite a maniac.
Fantastic.
Great work on this one, Fred.
Wish the heavy strings from the first Sal Boca tail scene were included in the soundtrack. Really intense work.
Mr Ellis died young. Definitely could have been one of the great Hollywood composers.

Boca'a scared, He sees Policemen in his soup
He's not wrong!
So you weren't picking your feet in Poughkeepsie
This music got nailed for poughkeepsie!!
Perfect soundtrack for two of the toughest cop thrillers, ever.
A much better film than A Clockwork Orange
Some like Al Pacino would have over acted in this role, Gene Hackman up there with the absolute best. Genius.
Fact is Billy didn't like Al
Fred! Ellis' Seven-Ups suite!
I don't want to cut.
If you don't hear the WARP in this LP they used to transfer from, your not actually listening to the music. Pitch wobble, anyone?
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Definitely some people in these comments who pick their feet.
