Thanks so much for this video! I bought an old vintage banjo years ago that needed some fret work. I also purchased a fiber skin head for it, but the guy who was going to do the fret work broke the wooden dowel that connects the neck to the pot. He passed away and never finished the job. The banjo sat in a closet for years. I recently purchased another vintage banjo that has a easily removable back, making it a decent Open Back banjo. I've been thinking about putting the old fiber skin head on this banjo and after hearing the sound of yours, I know I am!! Your's sounds great!! I enjoy your videos!! Blessings!!
Thanks! 😎
I'm a bluegrass 5-string banjo player and have looked for several banjo head reviews because I am about to buy a new banjo. Fiberskin or real skin banjo players all seems to play claw hammer style (which I am not). This being said I prefer the plunky sound of fiberskin as it sounds less like "plastic" and just more as a banjo. Thanks for having shared this video, after having watched a few reviews my choice is made, I'll go for fiberskin.
Perfect video ...I'm seriously thinking about buying a mint condition, preowned BR Specialwith a Fiberskyn head. Thanks.
Thank you! This is extremely useful. My banjo is a Prucha OpenBack with a Fyberskyn head. Initially I was unhappy because it sounds so much more mellow than the Goodtime (with standard head) that my teacher is playing for the lessons. At that time I was looking for a hard accentuated sound (like the Pisgah Dobson banjo on Steve Harrisons channel). As my banjo sounds quite the same like your Bart Reiter I now know, it is the Fyberskyn head and not the banjo. This might sound trivial to you, but it is quite difficult to find other banjo players to ask and compare here in Germany :-). I changed my mind anyway and meanwhile I love the fyberskyn sound. But nevertheless I am very much looking forward to your upcoming banjo-head videos. Thanks again.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching.
I like the sound of that head. What can you say about the kinds of strings on there and do you think it added to that nice soft sound? I'm interested in modifying a Deering Goodtime open backed banjo I bought a long time ago. How much tension did you use with the Fiberskyn head with a Drum Dial?
Good review Mandy! ...just for info, RUclips have stopped sending me notices of your posts for some reason, I've missed quite a few.
Figures really. They do what they want. Thanks for watching Bill.
Love the vids and the relaxed playing style. What tension do you aim for on the drum dial with the fibreskyn head? Thanks
Most times I do it by hand feel. But when I’ve tested it with the dial it’s around 90. Still got a small bit of wiggle in there.

Came here for the banjo head review... subscribed for the killer banjo playing! What's that last tune you were playing?
Hey thanks! That’s Dwight Diller’s version of Kitchen Girl.
Did I miss it or did you say what banjo that is? I have been wondering about the different head choices. Thanks for this video!
Bart Reiter Standard
What happened to the 'back to back sound comparison that you promised, at 0:33?
I ended up just making separate review videos of each one. Didn’t get to do it as I’d planned.
Do you prefer this head more than the JD special select goatskin , I see Stone Banjo will put either one
I prefer fiberskyn because weather won’t effect it. Otherwise I do like the goatskin also.
Hi - that's very interesting. Did you say there was a video that compares them all together?
I believe I did say that, but I never made the video. I meant to but I only had the one banjo and it didn’t work out. But I did videos each time I changed out the head.

@@BanjoLemonade Thank you! I'll check them all out! 🙂
I want that banjo. Why does my banjo sounds different from yours? or Does it depend on the brand and material that the banjo are made of? let me know.
oh yes Alfonso, this is an open back banjo. You may have a resonator banjo, which sounds quite different.
@@BanjoLemonade Thank you so much I may look at different banjos when ever I can afford to buy another one.
