Totally love the expressions on Lily's face. And Shanghai Lil was simply brilliant! Gutted to hear about Paul's passing. He was so funny and talented. And his devotion to animals was second to none. RIP you legend and thanks for making me laugh and cry. 😢❤
Sitting here, laughing and crying at the same time. Tears rolling down my face. Tears of joy because it's utterly brilliant and tears of sadness because we will never see Paul again. RIP XXX.
I love how Lily was never seen as a character but as a person in UK culture. Honestly, having a drag queen on UK morning TV shows would still be so taboo, but she was on Big Breakfast how many decades ago?
I totally get that, and now there’s plenty of drag queens on our screens!! My older sibling does drag, and it does seem like another person when they are in costume. Drag artists are the best
I always felt the same. Of all of the Drag Artists, I never saw Lily Savage or Dame Edna as anything other than their characters. I saw Dame Edna’s retirement tour and Paul O’Grady’s final performance as Miss Hannigan the week before he died. I didn’t once stop to think about the men behind the characters. I don’t know if it’s from growing up in the 90’s and seeing them on television constantly but they each had consistent backstories with family that were as well known (Veera, Madge…). Drag Queen just doesn’t cover it when you see that there is more than shade involved. Lily and Enda were also exceptional comedians and artists who’s backgrounds were very different but who reached artistic perfection in their characters. It’s just a shame that Paul wasn’t as fond of Lily the more he matured. She would have continued pushing and defining the meaning of Drag for all to follow. With Paul sadly gone, we can at least hope Lily is still out there trying to find the light!
@@musicalmagpie741 I think with Lily, he'd been doing her for SO much longer than when she came to UK public's attention on TV, so understandable by then he'd probably had enough of her.
As long as we all keep watching his work then he will never be forgotten he was unique and opened the door for many lesser acts to follow. I had the pleasure of working with him twice in my career and he always created an atmosphere among the cast that made us a community. He always had time for everyone and would notice if someone was having a bad day and invite them to his dressing room for tea. I’ve been with my partner for twenty years almost because he locked us in a room and forced us to talk to each other he loved to make people happy. Celebrity and star are throw away words now used for anybody but he earned those titles with hard work and dedication to people and animals there will never be another like him.
RIP Lily Savage/ Paul O'Grady. You will be missed.
