  • Pre sprouting summer flowering corms and bulbs indoors can get them flowering earlier. This is especially helpful in areas with a short frost free growing season. Pre sprouting is easy to do and takes up very little space. Watch how I pre sprout lay crocosmia and gladiolus in this video.
I grow flowers and vegetables in Saskatchewan, Canada. My cold hardiness zone is zone 4. I have an average of 110 frost free growing days each year. The past few years have seen our temperatures go as low as -37C (-34.6F) to as high as 37C (98.6F). Come see what and how I grow in these conditions.

I purchased an elephants ears years ago before I really knew anything about it. I enjoyed it for a season and tossed it!

I transferred all of my bulbs in two planters that can stay in sun during daytime and in the garage over cool nights. Ranunculus started a couple of days ago in separate container.
I purchased calla lilies at the end of season and surprised to see one of them had a seed pod. Two of 3 seeds germinated so far. Exited to have them as well.

I am going to start crocosmia and glads like this. What do they need in terms of water and sun while pre-sprouting?

Just keep them damp/moist in a sunny spot (south window) or under grow lights.

Do you soak your gladiolus in a diluted bleach before planting? I had bad thrips on mine last year! I soaked in diluted bleach solution before storing and might do again before planting. Darn bugs!

I don’t soak them. After a bad year of thrips I’ve put pot poppers nematodes on the soil when planting. Those nematodes will take care of thrips larvae as well as fungus gnats.
