    • @FiveCanadianAcres

      Yes we get the cabbage moths here too. It wasn't too bad my first couple of seasons. I also found by getting my spring crop in early they had change to grow before the moths came out. I also had success growing my onions around my cabbages, it helped mask their smell. This year I am definitely going to have to cover them, as I think I have been helping the population of moths grow around my garden the last few years.

      Glad you found me too, it's nice connecting with local gardeners :) Greenhouse are so nice, I have heard they can be tricky to grow in. My little glass greenhouse isn't heated so I can't grow much in it. It gets really hot during the day and cools right off at night. We are hoping to build a high tunnel to grow some peppers and tomatoes in next year. I got the Kalinka Malinkas from Bright Bush Farm but sadly she is no longer selling seeds this year. Revival Seeds out of NS carries a tomato called Kalinka that I feel is very similar, if not the same. I have ordered from them before, great seeds and company. I did save some seeds from mine last year. I have to do a germination test to see if they are viable. If they are I can send you some to try if you would like :)

    Lol, nice to see I’m not the only one that uses wire racks in GH.
    Interesting your Z3 and frost date is 5/14. I’m Z5a and ours is 5/12. We are extremely warm this year, warmer than I ever recall and all winter long. Because of this I’m not doing any winter sow and more a spring sow.
    I also seen on your calendar to transplant tomatoes right after frost date. You must use cloches or some kind of cover-right?
    😂I tried Tithonia last year and never seen only something that looked like a weed and took a chance and let it grow. It was the Tithonia and it was about 6’ had two flowers and the frost took it😂
    Looks like you had a lot of thinning to do especially those rutabagas. I found out they love it here as they get huge. Seeds I collected and dropped a few grew right away in the paths.
    Our potatoes were killed back to the ground by unwarned freeze last day of May😏 it was a devastating freeze and took out many plants including fruit. It was just to hot of a spring.

    • @FiveCanadianAcres
      @FiveCanadianAcres  8 месяцев назад +1

      I recently learned I have one of the longest frost free growing season for my zone. The Zone 3 part comes into play during those cold parts of winter when we can get -40. I don't usually cover my tomatoes after they've been planted. I have lost a few due to late frosts but for the most part they all grow and produce. I do find the more cold tolerant tomatoes do produce sooner so I will be planting more of those! We have had nice weather too, I am getting ideas of making a cold frame and planting some spinach :)
      It was a year of thinning last year, lol. This year I am planning on being more intentional with my seed planting, at least a little bit, lol. Hopefully this year will be a little less extreme and you can get a good potato harvest!!

    • @dustyflats3832
      @dustyflats3832 8 месяцев назад

      @@FiveCanadianAcres I looked back on the daily temp records online and we always had -40 in winter and I was right. Sure we always had a Jan thaw, but not this hot or for this long.
      The El Niño pattern they say is weakening and should bring back some precipitation. I have two large gardens and last July I couldn’t keep up and learned to install irrigation. Glad I did as it’s the best money I spent on the garden. The veg were much better and bigger.
      Thinning - I’m getting better at it as the carrots proved it last year-great harvest and still have some hiding under mulch and a bit of snow that’s left. I could never grow radishes and beets and found last year I need them shaded…well, I’m sure the irrigation helped also.
      We all like sunny warmer weather, but I’m not accustomed to what this weather can bring to the garden-fruit plants don’t do well.

    • @FiveCanadianAcres
      @FiveCanadianAcres  8 месяцев назад +1

      @@dustyflats3832 That's so great you got some irrigation. Watering the garden can be quite a chore, it takes me hours at the height of summer. I may look at using a portable soaker hose this year for some of my rows. It will be interesting to see if we get much more moisture this year. Most of our snow is gone which is not typical for here. I am actually hoping for a rainy spring, even if it makes it harder to garden. I am also curious to see how the perennials do, I feel the ones that make it through this winter surely must be hardy :)

    • @FiveCanadianAcres
      @FiveCanadianAcres  8 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you :) My average last frost is May 14th and average first frost is September 16th, so I have about 124 frost free growing days. We do have long days during the summer which helps the garden grow a lot! They are changing the maps here in Canada, I think I may be a Zone 4 now. But we just had temperatures of -40C so I think I am safer with Zone 3 or lower perennials.

      In the spring I find by planting early I can get a head start before the white moths start flying and laying eggs. With just a small amount of cabbage I will hand pick off the eggs I see. The fall garden gets hit hard though, I did spray with BTK (an organic pesticide) but it didn't work super well and I don't like spraying things anyways so this year I will have to cover the fall crop with netting.

    Unfortunately, the people who don't know where their food comes from, don't know that wheat is grass, oats and rice are sedges.
    Thing about growing things like garlic out to seed is that seeds can be stored for years. Any plants we can bring all the way to seed, we can collect/try new varieties.
    I'm thinking potatoes might be another candidate for seed experiment. There's a lot more varieties of those and I don't want to lose the varieties that do well for me.
