I had no idea that there was such an imposing castle there in Sheffield or of it's significant history. Will definitely visit again when I travel there to see my daughter who lives close to it's location and whose wedding will hopefully take place there in the great hall.
Hi Norman, excitingly Sheffield Castle is currently being excavated - it was under the old Castle market in the city centre and there are plans to regenerate the whole area: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-south-yorkshire-40775382 They have held open days where you can watch the excavations so look out for any they hold in the future as they're really interesting. Sheffield Manor Lodge is open every Sunday, April to September (under normal circumstances). I'm afraid we don't have a great hall anymore but the Turret House is impressive and we do have a very nice converted barn for weddings! Hopefully we will get to see you soon.
I visited about thirty years ago, when open days were few and far between. I couldn't believe that the site with so much history, had been allowed to deteriorate so badly. There wasn't much to see either at that time, so it's good to hear that things have changed somewhat. What I do remember, and it made quite an impression on me, was seeing the original teardrops done in plaster on the ceiling,..supposedly how Mary felt at her imprisonment.
@@Threshold344 We call it the banquet room but that is not an official name. It is possible it is where they ate and retired to after watching the hunt from the roof.
this council has never took advantage of its history and has destroyed so much of our history that other cities have embraced for tourism ,the council rather bury or flatten the past
