- During his end of season press conference, Mike Tomlin confirmed Kenny Pickett will retain QB1 duties, but Kenny Pickett to receive QB Competition in 2024 and Mike Tomlin wants Mason Rudolph back to be a part of it. Kenny Pickett didn't have the Year 2 jump a lot of people envisioned. Steelers still believe in him but will need to test and push Kenny. Mason Rudolph is a free agent and will have a market this offseason and it'll be a challenge to retain the end of season starter. If it comes down to Mason and Kenny, who else could the Steelers add to that competition? Let's discuss it all.

I was curious as to what all of a sudden made Tomlin come out and start speaking nice things about Mason for the first time ever! Was wondering if he had a little come to Jesus talk by somebody a little higher up than him! But you still noticed, Tomlin never says one negative thing about his golden boy and his baby Kenny!

Tomlin has to say that because he doesn’t know if Mason will re sign. He can’t commit to anyone but Kenny until he knows what qb will be in the roster. If Mason re signs, Mason will be our starter week 1, Mike tomlin is just doing the smart thing and saying Kenny for now

I agree that in KP's rookie, seaspn looked good after the bye and then in the preseason in 2023. Everything said about him regressing from last season is true. He is playing scared and with no confidence, which affects his decision-making. I just don't have faith in him. If we give him an opportunity to start again, that's because he's the first pick and wants him to be successful, but we can't help what we see. Mason is clearly better than Kenny Pickett.
My ideal QB competition is Pickett, Mason and Justin Fields. That’s a real QB competition. But don’t be surprised if someone offers a nice bag to Mason to possibly be a QB1 somewhere else and who’s to say he doesn’t take it. Just because everyone has a love affair for him now doesn’t mean he should forget how he was treated from everyone since 2019. Keep that in mind

I watched Bradshaw when everyone said he was a bum and Joe Gilliam should be our starter and get rid of Bradshaw. I told anyone that would listen that Bradshaw would take us to the Super Bowl. This was based on a 3 game sample of Gilliam playing at a high level. Then he startedt hrowing interceptions when Bradshaw was benched. Bradshaw took us to the Super Bowl
Whoever they hire at OC, they will bring in a guy familiar with his system. Example is if they bring in Waldron then Probably sign a guy like Drew lock. They won't bring in a big name. I don't think they will bring in a big name in FA in general
I would like to see Mason get a sweet deal from another team. He deserves it.
Tomlin has confidence and faith and all that in him until some one else comes along.

People should stop obsessing over the QB position. This team is a lot further away than a new QB from contending. Where do I start? They need a center. They need another OT. An ILB. A 3-tech DL, unless you think Heyward can play until he's 50. They need a safety. A CB. Probably another WR. That's quite a shopping list, and it won't get done with one draft or one year of free agency. Two, maybe three, is more like it. So try to resign Rudolph, hope that a new OC and QB coach can fix Pickett. And if not? Then worry about trading up to land a franchise QB. But hitting the panic button now and flailing around looking for a QB under every rock is a mistake. Fix the rest of the team, especially the defense, first...
I think they should be aggressive with building the lines. That is in my opinion more important. That's how you strengthen your o and defense.

It's impossible to have a fair competition when Tomlin is the judge. The end result will also be Pickett no matter what. Mason already beat out the competition the last 2 summers and he was basically kicked off the team.

you both left out that in addition to not showing up the first 45 minutes, Kenny benefited from the defenses played their asses off to keep the score low to one score game to GIVE HIM A CHANCE TO win the game with one scoring drive. All the games that Kenny didn't show up the first 45 minutes and the defenses COULDN'T hold down the other team....KENNY SUCKED the rest of the remaining 15 minutes.
too many Kenny defenders have not given the defense the due credit.....Every player has hit counts...not just the running backs....the failures of the offense (Blame whoever you want) forced the defense to play too many plays = injuries to all the linebackers/safeties. The running backs aren't the only positions that get bang up the more touches....just saying.

The Steelers have more than one reason to bring back Rudolph. Guess who the number one team is who is interested in Rudolph if he doesn't get signed by Pittsburgh. Cleveland Browns. Rudolph helps he Browns on so many levels after the Flacco bust. If Rudolph goes to the Browns, it is NOT going to be a good thing for the Steelers. I don't need to waste time breaking down why. KP's honeymoon period is over. Its put up or shut up for KP. The only way KP starts next season is if he truly wins the competition, and I don't see that happening.
They have to make a decision on Rudolph pretty damn quick, or there will be consequences. Pretty sure Cleveland, and Tomlin are talking to Rudolph as we speak. Unless the Browns come up with crazy money, I see Rudolph coming back to Pittsburgh, and they aren't going to go through what they have to go through to bring Rudolph back and sit on the bench behind KP.

Let's take a step back and look back over a period of years . Pickett is probably slightly better than Rudolph was in his 2nd year. Pickett will only get better with a competent offensive coordinator and sitting behind Rudolph for a while. I think they would both be effective next year in a better system. The key going into next year is making sure the offensive line is not a problem by getting a new offensive line coach, free agents or the draft. The X factor is going to be the TE Darnell Washington. He needs to be much improved in the passing game and run blocking if the Steelers want to be mentioned in a conversation about the Super Bowl. The Steelers could come with a two tight end set that would be hard for teams to match up with. Teams would have to respect the run but the Steelers could pass efficiently out of the two TE set also.
You CANNOT even pull #4 games from ALL of Kenny Picketts #25 games to come within 20 points of Mason Rudolph Last #4 games..

What offensive coordinator would want to work with Pickett? Nothing against Pickett, but I believe the Steelers reached to get Pickett when all the other quarterbacks in that draft went in the 3rd round and was not a good year for quarterbacks.

Well with Tomlin already saying Kenny Pickett be QB 1 but says will be challenge? Other words Kenny going to have to fall flat on his face to not be QB 1 2024. He be the starter unless say they back to scoring 7 or 10 points for the first couple of games. Far as competition depending on what OC they hire will have the biggest saying. Even though seems Mason was better at reading-progression for example if they hire someone who likes a "mobile" QB then Mason could be on short end,as Mason considered a statue. Kenny, at least when he not turning his back to the field when rolling out, i guess is considered more "mobile". Perceived "mobility" it about the only reason besides draft pedigree i convinced Mitch got to be QB 2 this past season.
