27:18 Sure, Wildfire Wickerfolk dies to Pyroclasm, but it kinda wants to. 1) it has haste, so it dealt damage before pyroclasm hits 2) it's an artifact creature which means you are at 50% delirium when it dies 3) once you hit delirium, your next wickerfolk is now a 4/3 haste trample. It won't die to the next pyroclasm.
Something of note. Overlord of the Hauntwood curves into itself. If you impending the first one t3 and untap play a land, you can cast another one. With Llanowar Elves coming later this year, we may have a pretty decent green deck or even a 2-3c Overlord ramp deck.
I actually agree that Rescuer might not make it in convoke, but the funny thing about saying "you're already convoking all your other convoke cards" is that despite the deck name there's only a single convoke card in the standard build of that deck 😅
The difference also is this white card is a legendary, so you shouldn't be running it as a 4-of and it's also not that good in terms of value besides for blocking or stopping removal (which is still good but sounds to me like a tech piece)
I think Wardens might be the cut in favor of Emperor. Once you're tapping down 2-3 creatures at sorcery speed to put a 1/1 counter on Warden you could nearly flash in Emperor. Any turn where you'd pay W to play Warden, then tap three goblins to put a 1/1 counter on Warden and scry 1, just hold it to end step and tap one more white mana and get a 3/4 double-strike. Such a bigger payoff than Warden. In Convoke Math Warden of the Inner sky is a really expensive and kinda slow card.
Rooms are basically adventures, 2 cards in 1 so it's a bit funny that people are so low on them. Stomp // Bonecrusher Giant wasn't obviously busted at first glance because 2 mana for a shock is terrible. But when there's a creature card attached it becomes a powerful card.
Well, some rooms work more like Cases I guess. Where you have an enchantment static effect, then you need to level it up to get another effect. Only the rooms that have an an immediate "etb" effect will work like adventures. But I know it's not actual etb it's like a cast / unlock thing.
@@jerred9655 But then you can use them again. Imagine if blinking Bonecrusher Giant meant you could Stomp something else. That would kinda make it better.
The main drawback I'm thinking is that they are vulnerable while on the table. Adventure just exiles the card to a place where it can't be interacted with, which is huge.
I think the biggest problem with Rooms, if that Talents exist. Talents mean people have to run enchantment removal, and Rooms will just take collateral damage.
The wandering rescuer can convoke down in response to removal to save other crucial creatures as it enables tapping down to meet the clause of hexproof
I like chainsaw in standard. Kill something on two then curve into urabrask's forge and they both grow each turn. If they ever tap out or run out of removal you can pay 3 and trample for like 8 damage
Legacy reanimater player here. Fanatic has huge implications for BG Reanimator. It basically turns Otherworldly tutor into an entomb OR animate dead. You either tutor for the fanatic and miracle it next turn. Or you fetch for a surviel land and tutor with the trigger on the stack. BG reanimator has had success utilizing otherworldly tutor in the past, but it fell out of favor because the tutor lost a lot of utility after the Grief ban. This could easily put it back on the map.
All of the impending overlords and enduring glimmers are great with Lich-knights' conquest (4B Sorcery) You can sac all of your overlords and glimmers and bring them back as creatures. Also, all of the overlord abilities will trigger again.
As a historic player, I'm so happy to finally get damnation. My jund control deck is getting a big upgrade. I just wish that we could get the option for the original art as I really love the OG art. I keep hoping that we'll get pernicious deed as well someday. Those two cards are the ones that I've been wanting to add to my Muldrotha brawl deck.
You can also bolt/shock your own Screaming Nemesis and point its damage trigger at your opponent to stop their lifegain if they won't bolt it themselves!
Gloomlake verge in modern over darkslick shores. Checklands have been around for forever, but Gloomlake entering untapped for a relevant color is not to be underestimated. I've played too many games where a mid to late game shores did me wrong. Looking forward to testing my hypothesis in a couple weeks.
I think it depends on the deck. Since it only makes blue on turn one if your plan is to Thoughtseize or Fatal Push it's probably worse than Darkslick, if you don't really care about playing a black card on turn one (or better yet, you want to play a blue card on turn one) then Gloomlake Verge is great.
@MTGGoldfishPodcast true. If you're geared more for hand disruption, darkslick is still the slickest around. I'm excited for tamiyo early though, and down for drown in the late without concern for being tapped out.
I've been trying to keep track of when Atraxa or Valgavoth would have been a better reanimator/ramp target. It's clearly so impossible to tell because of deck building and lines taken in games, but there are a lot more games than I expected where just being able to target and kill Atraxa have been a ginormous factor; where I was basically stone dead to Valgavoth.
@sosukelele right. I get they are different. But Ive seen a lot of "Valgavoth is bad because Atraxa exists". So Ive just been trying to make a note of when I see Atraxa, if instead it was Valgavoth, who would be better in that game.
Yeah, it is an interesting debate. I think when it comes down to it drawing a new hand of cards immediately is just so much value that Atraxa is hard to beat, but there are definitely situations where the ward on Valgavoth will make it better and essentially unbeatable.
Overlord of the Balemurk + Scrollshift is +2 in card advantage, allows for 6-8 cards for delirium set up, and can be +3 if you block a creature, and on top of that you also get a 5/5 with flash that can immediately attack on your turn 4, with counter backup. Inconsistent, but when it works, it seems backbreaking. Really difficult to interact with as well, because they can scrollshift in response to your enchantment removal (but you can enchantment removal in response to their scrollshift...)
I am worried about rooms as a mechanic. Not because they are good or bad, but because I don't foresee them getting any new support in the next few years. The mechanic is very unique to Duskmourn, and they can't just throw room cards in other sets that don't take place on Duskmourn.
I think rooms can be easily implemented into sets. D&D sets can use it as sort of a dungeon. They can also be used to depict important locations within any set.
Lord of the flood pits is being underrated imho especially bc it flips tamiyo and you have force and flare and subtlety for free “counter-magic” I could see a one of in a Murktide or blue base deck in modern or in pioneer or timeless

Not mentioning the green overlord in the discussion of standard is criminal. Card is crazy in domain, and the land is a token for caretakers talent. It also ramps into itself. Just a nutty card.
@50:12 the other thing is if you get an abhorrent oculus as the manifest dread you can flip it for 3 no exile off that, so I think you could maybe make it a pretty good card.
The Wandering Rescuer just slots in so easily as your 4 drop or even 3 drop it doesn't even have to just be convoke decks. Normal Orzhov mid or aggro decks can easily pay the convoke cost just because of Zoraline having her vigilance, in addition to Virtue of Loyalty untapping for extra synergy. She just slots in so easily.
People have even been talking about Abhorrent Oculus for Standard. While I don't think it's good enough for Murktide in Modern and I don't think it fits in Phoenix, but I think there might be a different shell might be playable for Pioneer.
the 3/4 flash double striker wandering soemthing rescuer something - this thing just seems like a great midrange threat to me. not necessarily just in a convoke deck. my just over-blowing the power of this card? thing looks great esp when u have some other decent threat you are trying to attack wtih and give hexproof too. like sheoldred or zoraline or someitng
i think The Wandering Rescuer is a good card in standard, but i don't think it's for the convoke deck. one of the best parts of that deck is that spot removal kind of sucks against it - spending a card to kill a token sucks, and the nontoken creatures mostly get their value on etb. giving creatures hexproof just isn't that valuable. maybe it sees play as a beater that can be flashed out after a boardwipe, but i'm skeptical. i think if it finds a home it will be in a new brew, perhaps something using the survival mechanic.
I agree it's not a convoke card. You have 5 creatures in play and pass instead of attacking? It's so obvious that you have this because otherwise you would attack or convoke something else. So it's not even good in the surprise factor lol. I would play it in creature combo decks though. Then it's like a MH2 elemental that can counterspell a removal for 0 mana.
Why does everyone keep saying Delirium will be hard to achieve. It seems like Standard might be one of the easiest Standards to ever hit Delirium. Surveil lands, Bitter Triumph can pitch the new enchantment land, or any enchantment or artifact creatures. It's not hard to have Delirium turn 2 or 3 pretty regularly in the new format.
I don't know if "hard" is the right word really, it's more that it takes work. You can build a deck to hit delirium and should be able to do it pretty consistently (assuming your opponent doesn't have graveyard hate), but it's not that easy to just have delirium in a random deck if you aren't trying to set it up.
They were down on Chainsaw because of maybe removing it? but seriously if my removal spell can then also eat another one of my opponents resources because of the very real later game threat it can become (especially with fling combos) I would count that as a win, it's not like we haven't spent 2 for that level of removal before, but this just comes with another permanent you can sac or use somewhere later
What do you guys think about azorius Erie support from the set ? It looks extremely similar to selesnia enchantments from kamigawa. 1 mana 1/1 that gives +/+ counter on constelation, 2 mana cost reducer enchantment creature and ethereal armour is very similar to mishico rain of truth. Selesnia deck was tier 2 for a long time so I think this one can work too
I've built a couple of Azorius Eerie deck so far. They look super fun, but I'm not sure how strong they are yet. Going to have to give them a try once the set is out.
The Oculus is just so greedy, it clearly wants to be in a graveyard deck, but it eats such a huge chunk of it. Casting it means not casting your Murktide, or nerfing your Haughty Djinn, or clearing out your other reanimation targets, etc etc. It's strength is being a better late game card with a consistent clock and inevitability with the manifests, but most tempo decks aren't really trying to play a game like that.
Fishmail is basically a meme at this point. I used to look forward to it, but now I don't even bother asking stuff. I think it would probably be better if it wasn't even addressed at the end of the cast.
Ah good, I afraid Richard's takes might be mellowing out a little, but then he gives us "Pyroclasm RUINS MAGIC because it stops you from playing as Richard Garfield intended."
When was the last time a Stoneforge deck actually used red mana? Maybe Hammer Time, but the red splash was never as good as the mono-white or UW builds. Chainsaw is a definite no for me.
Richard has said elsewhere that he plays devil's advocate for content purposes. I don't take Richard's takes seriously at all, especially when Crim & Seth are united on a topic.
So definitely no 500 episodes celebration then? As an avid Goldfish listener I gotta say I'm really disappointed. Would love to hear you talk about your brand, takes us back through 10 years of MTGGoldfish!
We're bad at planning stuff like that, lol. I think the current plan is to do something special for episode 520 since that will be 10 years of the Goldfish cast.
Does Crim realize that impending an Overlord makes it an enchantment and not a creature that can block? The way he was talking about the blue one made it sound like he thinks it's a creature that can block but can only attack when the last counter is removed. 3 mana catalog is just terrible. 😅 Actually worse than divination. I don't think you ever feel good casting it on turn 3. But t2 cache grab is reasonable and so is 4 mana for 2 flyers or 4 damage, or even 3 mana for ramp. Idk to me it's pretty obvious that blue has the absolute worst Overlord. Edit: And even if you hardcast it, 3 toughness is PITIFUL lol.
lol what you have no idea what you’re talking about. Of the 3, Seth is the only one who was never grinding PTQs, and they all collectively agree Richard beats them all the time in commander because he’s really good at magic. I don't know who's the best but I wouldn't say "Seth is much better than the other 2"
you actually don't want altanak because if they play orcish bowmasters you literally get milled out. the draw happens before the ping resolves and OBM sees play in 2/3 of the top 3 decks rrn
Wow cannot believe how low you all are on kona. It isnt an all in combo. Its just good value. Without any crazy set up, you play kona on turn 4. Tap it with a vehicle or sadle. And play atraxa? Or etali? Sure wrath or bust but like make them have it?
27:18 Sure, Wildfire Wickerfolk dies to Pyroclasm, but it kinda wants to.

Pyroclasm is currently played in modern due to energy
Chainsaw missed its moment. The anvil decks would have loved it...
Omg, i was always listening to the goldfish podcast and suddenly it vanished...now I realize it's on another channel😅
Join the black decks Richard. Get practicing for op 09 black beard zeee hahaha
All the cards matter this set rules it’s gunna be the best ever and I love it. Lol
Fishmail is basically a meme at this point. I used to look forward to it, but now I don't even bother asking stuff. I think it would probably be better if it wasn't even addressed at the end of the cast.
Richard with the worst takes lol "I hate removal that's too efficient" XD
I want Seth to know that I won my store championship with a variant of the graveyard beans deck!!! Super hyped for the black overlord in that shell.
Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Congrats!
Bronco room! tyhe grixis mythic rooms are mana value 10 and 11 for bronco
I want to see a brew with og Massacre Girl and Chainsaw.
Yay
I put arabellevwith vrex and skinner from bloomburrow
Ah good, I afraid Richard's takes might be mellowing out a little, but then he gives us "Pyroclasm RUINS MAGIC because it stops you from playing as Richard Garfield intended."
When was the last time a Stoneforge deck actually used red mana? Maybe Hammer Time, but the red splash was never as good as the mono-white or UW builds. Chainsaw is a definite no for me.
Time to talk about new cards? Oh boy can't wait to hear Richard be a grumpy shit about ***everything***
Remember when richard said that Nadu sucks and would not break any format lol
Richard has said elsewhere that he plays devil's advocate for content purposes. I don't take Richard's takes seriously at all, especially when Crim & Seth are united on a topic.
He makes people so mad I love it. :)
I'm just really excited to have a card with incidental proliferate totally hose an impended overlord
@18:00 - thank you Richard. Impending is too slow.
@@MTGGoldfishPodcast awesome, can't wait!!
Richard seems to think convoke decks can only convoke once per game.
When you reanimate one they reanime all of them
Does Crim realize that impending an Overlord makes it an enchantment and not a creature that can block? The way he was talking about the blue one made it sound like he thinks it's a creature that can block but can only attack when the last counter is removed.
3 mana catalog is just terrible. 😅 Actually worse than divination. I don't think you ever feel good casting it on turn 3. But t2 cache grab is reasonable and so is 4 mana for 2 flyers or 4 damage, or even 3 mana for ramp. Idk to me it's pretty obvious that blue has the absolute worst Overlord.
Edit: And even if you hardcast it, 3 toughness is PITIFUL lol.
Just found out richard is the owner and my soul was crushed.
Seth is the most modest of these guys about his ability to evaluate cards but he is the best player by a ton.
What are you even on about lmao. I watch his gameplay videos relatively often and the amount of mistakes he makes is insane
Idk if Seth is the best player, but I’d agree that Seth does tend to have the best evaluations of new cards
@qwerty62201 you just shit talk all the time, lol
Put your money where you put the weiners, and post a video of you being better. I'll wait.
lol what you have no idea what you’re talking about. Of the 3, Seth is the only one who was never grinding PTQs, and they all collectively agree Richard beats them all the time in commander because he’s really good at magic. I don't know who's the best but I wouldn't say "Seth is much better than the other 2"
How do we get a mtg goldfish community fantasy football league next season?
Overlord of the boilerbiggles
Chainsaw doesn’t give trample is so wrong
Sincerely prof made a better job
Rooms actually have the mana value of whatever rooms are open, so the birthing pod tech doesn't work.
you actually don't want altanak because if they play orcish bowmasters you literally get milled out. the draw happens before the ping resolves and OBM sees play in 2/3 of the top 3 decks rrn
No where to run is a problem.
Crim with the Dimir hair 💧💀
Chainsaw imo is a bad card. It says “one or more” and is 3 to equip.
poorly made set. not exciting. the scariest part will be the players running away from duskmourne and avoiding it like vampires to garlic.
Wow cannot believe how low you all are on kona. It isnt an all in combo. Its just good value. Without any crazy set up, you play kona on turn 4. Tap it with a vehicle or sadle. And play atraxa? Or etali? Sure wrath or bust but like make them have it?
I watch for crim and tolerate the others
