It's very sad to see this movie not getting the recognition it deserves. Benicio was so good in this one, he portrayed the trauma, the physical and emotional stress/pain he had to go through. And the line "his father is literally a monster", is much deeper than it sounds like. Sadly people just saw the vfx and makeup, not the portrayal.
I agree 100% Benecio was better as Talbot than Chaney Jr. My opinion, of course but the 1940s made HORRIBLE monster movies that fans just watch and digest over and over again. The reason they sucked? Implausible story lines (Dracula/Wolfman/Frankenstein Monster all in one mish -mash of silly nonsense) and the censorship of violence and gore. The acting in these old movies was ridiculous as well. Just listen to the dialogue…people don’t talk like that! AND why do they always have to change the time from Victorian England (or whenever) to modern times? Universal, after ‘Son of Frankenstein’ and before HAMMER PRODUCTIONS was stupid.
One of my Favourite Horror movies. True to the original in terms of old-style Film Noir ambience & Classically written style. Love this rendition. Sometimes, remakes are worth their weight in gold.
I like how painful this transformation was. And they showed it in such detail that it was honestly uncomfortable to watch at times. Like his feet changing shape and extending. His fingers being pulled back seemingly coming out of their joints. And his teeth being pushed away from each other as his jaw was expanding. And you can see the blood while his teeth are being realigned.
*I really enjoy this scene. They capture perfectly the agonizing pain that would no doubt take place going through that kind of transformation. So when he says “kill me” you really understand the depth*
@K, U aren’t a KILLA To be fair, Joe Johnston had to finish someone else's movie. Well, that and a werewolf and a wolfman are technically two different things.
I agree with your assessment. A transformation like this - if real - would be a change on a cellular and fundamental level, and be incredibly painful. His body would be literally reshaping itself. Bones would stretch with muscle, eyes would swell in their sockets, teeth would shift and sprout anew, only to change back with the light of day. Truly horrific, and truly fascinating.
The "Kill me..." isn't because he's in physical pain here, though he obviously is. It's because he know that once he turns he'll start to slaughter everything in his path.
@@noxamillion4514 your just a clown 🤡 if it was real, then it’s already breaking every law we know, so it probably wouldn’t hurt because it would involve some kind of supernatural magic which is real by the way, so it wouldn’t hurt!!

I love how everything from 4:50 and onward is chase and hunt with amateur London police, people screaming, and horror movie monster on the run and rampage. It’s so all well done.
This is the best werewolf horror movie ever made. It flew well under the radar, more than worthy of Oscar nominations. Benicio is an extraordinary actor, he always brings a passionate energy and transforming effect to the characters in every film he has ever been in. 🔥🙏🏽🏆
@@Reynard1010 I will always love the original "Wolfman" with Lon Chaney Jr. from the mid-40s story-wise and the actors (especially the elderly Gypsy woman). However, I have to say the werewolf transformation was much more "realistic" in the updated version than every werewolf movie combined (in my opinion of course), as well as much bloodier! Kudos to Rick Baker and Benicio Del Toro!
I've seen them all, but Benicio's portrayal of the Wolfman is a 5 star performance. In this excellent movie he's everything a well mannered man of that era should be. Thoughtful, well educated & compassionate. In his altered state he becomes an unstoppable force of horror. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
@@ipaporod I was amazed by how much Benicio resembled Chaney in the movie. Reminded me of Tiny Ron's performance of "Luthor" in "The Rocketeer" and how much they were able to make him look like Rondo Hatton.
Easily one of, if not my absolute favorite werewolf transformation. I never understood why people hated this movie, I think it did Lon Chaney Jr. justice.
American Werewolf in London and The Howling top this by a lot by the sheer use of practical effects. It's more visceral because it IS real and in-camera. Just like The Thing from the early 80's beats the crap out of most CG monster movies today. Just watch the revulsion on modern movie goers when they actually watch these "old" films. You don't get that with CG.
@@dan_hitchman007 there are plenty of scenes with practical effects in this though. I didn’t feel like the CGI was overly done in this movie and it didn’t look terrible
@@dan_hitchman007 you’re not wrong. For a movie from 2010 though it’s not that bad though. Rick Baker even said himself that he couldn’t do the transformation scene with practical effects because it was so much different than An American Werewolf in London. The rampaging of the werewolf through the streets of London kind of feels like a a throwback to the Piccadilly Circus scene in American Werewolf in London.
@@taajwarpope2708 Completely. He is a true genius and master, I miss the creativity of the days of practical visual effects. His creations were magical, and they will remain for history.

@@georgenestler2534 well I think even if he did, he would still get killed later, cuz the wolfman was literally eyeing him the whole time, so there was no escape.

I'm happy to see I'm not the only who thinks this movie is actually great. P.S. The fact that takes place in the victorian England gives a fantastic gothic atmosphere.
Such an underrated horror gem. As far as remakes go, I thought it was a solid modern take 👌 Not perfect by any means, but still pretty good, with some fantastic performances and awesome practical make up effects as well. If you're a fan of Werewolves and/or Victorian Gothic Horror, it's a must see.
I love how the Wolfman goes from running on Two legs to All Fours, it really symbolizes the whole Civilized Man becoming a Feral Beast aspect of the Werewolf Transformation.
Apparently, they wanted him to be bipedal originally as an homage to the original. But they realized that it looked a little silly and that running on all fours looked way cooler
The intense pain that one would go through during a mechanical transformation of their entire body including bones within a brief amount of time would explain why lycanthropes are always so entirely pissed off.
And explains why the human side “blacks out” and remembers nothing, the human side of the brain shuts down the body to avoid going into shock and death, the body is now a mere morphological shell and the human is just a passenger along for the ride as they have no control of their body, going on a murderous, predatory ride.

This is a great movie! Love how they portrayed the wolfman - clear elements of man and wolf mixed to create the classic monster. Exactly what a werewolf should be and as a result, far more terrifying!
@@Legs_ Don't get me wrong, Professor Lupin is my favourite character in all of Harry Potter, but in my opinion, the werewolf design was a tad bit disappointing for me, but I definitely can see where you're coming from :D
@@Legs_ You may have a point about sickly and starving, but still a bad depiction. However, one of the last films to have an actual werewolf. It just needed some fur to make it passable. Nowadays, every "werewolf" is just a big wolf.
Yes. It would seem that throughout this whole scene he’s only killing people who tried to hurt him, or just got in his way. Aside from that, all he did was run around and scare people, because Lawrence doesn’t want to hurt anyone.
I wish they continued this monsters universe. I love this movie, its so underrated. I would love to see Benicio Del Toro's Wolfman vs Frankenstein. Who would play Dracula and Frankenstein?
Even though he was attached during the time of The Mummy 2017, I think Javier Bardem could have done a great Frankenstein next to del Toro's Wolfman, and maybe Jason Isaacs as Dracula, what do you think?
I believe we're getting a new Wolfman with Ryan Gosling, but I gotta agree. This here was extremely underrated. Glad The Invisible Man did so well, though. It's gonna hopefully give us a ton more top quality movies within this universe.
@@atodamadre3197 It was part of the Universal Monsters Remake Era, remaking the classic monster movies from the 1930's, starting with The Mummy, Van Helsing and The Wolfman, then Universal decided to reboot again and make something akin to the MCU, that would be called the Dark Universe, with the first movie being Dracula Untold followed by Victor Frankenstien and The Mummy, but due to it not performing well at the box office, the Dark Universe was shelved
Rick Baker and his team did a fantastic job and designing the Wolfman. I like the idea of him running on all fours as opposed to just running on two legs. It's like he was that much more faster and menacing. Rick promised that this Wolfman could do a lot more damage than the original Lon Chaney version and he delivered. The original Wolfman just tore out your jugular. This one mutilates when he wants to.
I like how everyone runs away in fear after seeing what was just a myth for them before. This is an example of how pride and excessive confidence can blind until danger begins. And I also like the violence and bestial sadism of the werewolf mixed with the screams and horrors of his victims.
@ Soapfanaddict I take it you haven’t seen the movie. I think you completely missed the intent of the characters themselves. Darth Vader and magneto are methodical in their nature to where this creature is completely wild, unpredictable, and will say anything to terrify anybody in their way. It has no quarrel about letting people live or killing them indiscriminately. It simply does not care about MOST human values because of how he was raised as a child. It’s the weight, wildness, and several layers of characterization that make this scene succeed in all areas.
I don’t think you must the same movie I did because he does harm people in discriminately. Yes he does kill the person who injected him as well as the doctor, but he also mortally wounded 7 other people in that same room. Those are 2 or 3 inch long claws ripping through 7 people in the room and at least 7 in the bus. The difference between him and the two you mentioned is that this one doesn’t care whether you live or die if you’re in or near it’s vicinity. Hulk and Morbius prefer not to kill, Vader chooses who to kill, this one doesn’t care about either option.I don’t know how are you didn’t see that. He’s not like Hulk or Morbius at all. There’s no line between morality and immorality for him.
This should have been the start to a new Universal Monsters universe. I know many people want it to still be it’s own thing but I’m sorry this Wolfman design is too good to never use again.
They should definitely redo all of the universal monster movies, in this style. It closely mirrors the original, but is fresh all the same. I'd love to see dracula, and the mummy in this style. Frankenstein has been done to death, but there are some good remakes.
I agree completely. I've always liked the wolf man look, as opposed to the long snout and pointed ears. And a truly more terrifying appearance, in my opinion.
@@robertstalnaker5728, mmmm? They say need to rethink that casting. Even this awesome transformation FX work in this one couldn't make Mr. Gosling a successor to DelToro
I was more impressed by the accuracy of the bullets. Being this accurate using a handgun, while running after a target, which is faster than yourself is quite impressive.
I love how this pays a great homage to the original black and white "Wolfman" movies. I also feel it gives a nod to An American Werewolf In London from the 80's (maybe coincidental) where David (the Werewolf) goes bananas in Piccadilly Circus causing buses to crash, and randomly picking off members of the public. A great movie! :)
The professor deserved it the most! The irony of playing a wolf in sheep skin while trying to lead a blind herd to nowhere will cross a real wolf that will teach the damned a moral and valuable lesson.
Actually, I disagree. There was a lot less of the tropiness from back then. The ppl running and closing the door, made me cringe and the janitor making that dumb comment made me want to toss something. The old school movies may have been a bit over-acted, but they tried not to insult your intelligence, just to create scene.
After watching Dog Soldiers for so long I gotta say this movie is the best werewolf movie of all time. The brutal killings, the fact that it showed the transformation and the transformation isn’t full wolf-like but man-like is a nice touch. I love both wolf and man like transformations but this one showed it hurts to transform.
When this was playing in the theaters, I went to see it 3 times. It blew me away. To this day I say it's one of the greatest werewolf films ever made. Nice to see that the rest of the world is finally catching up. It's a classic.
*1:16** Despite being a supporting role, Antony Sher played a sarcastic and crazy doctor well. He even deserved an award or more praise for it. R.I.P. (1949-2021).*
7:03 I noticed that del Toro's Wolfman doesn't rely solely on biting, but rather primarily slashing his victims to death. It's a bit of a departure from the original source material where Lon Chaney Jr.'s Wolfman tore out the jugular of his victims and not much else.
Plot wise, I think it had more to do with the fact that Lawrence Talbot is more human then Sir John even when he’s in his Wolf Form. Lawrence even in his wolf form doesn’t want to kill anyone, just those who would mean to hurt him.
It’s a shame this movie isn’t talked about, literally used to watch it on repeat and still watch it now and then and I love it, I was only young when first viewing it and I think it was the very gothic feel to it, with the woods and the moon being used perfectly, the mystery behind the story, the love story in it, everything just pieced together for me
It's such a damn shame that this movie didn't do better at the box office. It really was so well done. This was a great scene, and Anthony Hopkins was so good as the father. Honestly, the entire cast was damn near perfect and acted wonderfully. Not to mention, this was some of Rick Bakers' best work.
I love the transformation. The movie deserves more credit. Its 2023 and people are still watching this scene, by far my favourite scene from the movie.
This was a remake of the 1941 Lon Chaney Jr.’s The Wolf Man. I think this film is excellent and sadly underrated. I think the film captures the essence of the original while adding a whole new level of horror. I was so happy to see Rick Baker and Dave Elsey’s version of the werewolf - classic, not like the cartoon-like cgi figures in Underworld. This was practical makeup and well done. Kudos to the whole cast for marvelous performances. This film should have been the beginning of the Universal Monster comeback.
The Wolfman, Frankenstein and Dracula and do all or part of it in B/W. Question: Which actors would you like to see in each of the roles?? Frankenstein: The Undertaker Dracula: Andy García Wolfman: Stephen Baldwin
I don’t care what anyone says this is by far my fav werewolf movie ever!, I love how brutal they make him, and the transformations scenes always seemed so painful, and the howls 🤌🏻🔥, so underrated and the story itself I thought was pretty decent
I'm planning to rent it, this evening. I had always remembered how above and beyond the set of the mansion was in this movie, just the atmosphere made it stick in my mind as one of the better productions that I'd seen. There are movies that look real and there are a lot of movies, some with big budgets, that just never can immerse you because everything looks fake. This is not one of those movies.
One of the few werewolf movies I can recall in recent years that was well done and not cheesy. Vampires always get every type of media dedicated to them but werewolves were always more fascinating imo
I remember watching this in the theatre and being scared out of my mind, eyes covered during the scary bits. To now becoming my favourite werewolf movie of all time haha
Man, I don't care what anyone says. This movie is underrated gem! It was great back then and it is now. And I can't express enough how much I would wanted a sequel to this movie. Sadly people don't dig what makes this movie so awesome. And because of that we will never see anything related to this movie.
They torture and brow beat the ones that are cursed. They torment them into a heated rage. Instead of believing that the tormented MAY be speaking about ANY facts or truths at all.... Then, when Benicio Del Toro DOES transform into a werewolf, proving them to be with out understanding of the curse that he tried so hard to enlighten them of, THEY become the victims!!!! This movie was SO well done and SO underrated, what a shame that the critics AND the rest of the film industry.... Could not feel the teeth of victimhood themselves!!!!
All those idiots jamming up the door just reminds me of the theater scene from American Werewolf in London where the people were more of a danger to themselves than the monster. I do absolutely love how even when transformed he still has enough human intelligence left to remember those who did him wrong. I love how he doesn't just attack and kill the doctor like a wild animal would, he straight throws his ass out the window cause he remembered him talking about flying out of it.
I know the movie’s CGI is kinda mixed in quality, but this is still an awesome transformation and the makeup for the werewolf form is top tier (in fact, this movie won an Oscar for its makeup)

And the line "his father is literally a monster", is much deeper than it sounds like. Sadly people just saw the vfx and makeup, not the portrayal.
I agree 100%
Benecio was better as Talbot than Chaney Jr.

Benicio fully committed to this role by becoming an actual werewolf.
Yes he did.
Christian Bale will put him to shame when he becomes The Creature From The Black Lagoon.
Yeah, the transformation was brutal.

American Werewolf in London and The Howling top this by a lot by the sheer use of practical effects. It's more visceral because it IS real and in-camera.
