Not suprised you got fault codes and binding brakes / gearbox issues because you know what with CORVID and me being disabled my 3.0 'S' type Jaguar doesn't get used much and sits in the street when she should be howling down the A1 and i get those sort of faults she really needs a good home where she gets regular use.

Hi Guys. Lovely car. I have been a mechanic for many years and offer my thoughts regarding the vibration. I have a 320i of similar vintage (same brake set up). It developed a fault last year when you would be driving along and all of a sudden the car would start vibrating. It sounded like gearbox/propshaft/rear axle was trying to shake itself to bits. If i slowed down the vibration went away, but would return later. Like you i looked at the usual suspects and found nothing wrong. It turned out that the problem was the handbrake inside the rear disc/drum assembly. The handbrake shoes at the o/s had become detached from the pins holding the shoes to the back plate. (The pins had pulled through the backplate). I managed to refix them with a repair to the backplate, and the problem has never re-occurred. During lockdown the car had not done many miles and the handbrake had stuck on a few times, but always free'd off as soon as the car moved. Maybe this could be your problem. Love the channel. Keep up the good work guys.

    • @simonrook5743
      @simonrook5743 3 года назад +1

That BMW handbrake is simply dreadful, MOT failure rate is really high.
When I bought my E46 the handbrake was dreadful, when I stripped it down the drums were full of rust, the previous owner had never had them adjusted properly and was just doing it at the cable (doesn’t work!).

Lovely motor, brings back memories! Straight six 3.0 M54 engine, one of my favourite BMW engines! Got rid of mine at around 220k miles and the engine was still running strong, only maintenance I done was regular oil changes, renewed the cooling system and DISA valve and it gave me years of joy!
Love the exhaust stock exhaust note on the 330i's especially at start-up.

A nice clean vehicle, no question. Under bonnet view was a picture, it looked like a new ex showroom example. The niggly things were all the sorts of things that a laid up car usually produces, but at least you knew how to manage and massage them out. So, it did need a bit of work and your consciences are clear about earning a margin, call it a reward for efforts you made.
It is certainly a handsome example and doing nicely for its age. You surely have the luck of the gods on your side.

Check the suspension on the top of the shock is a rubber mount, they are very common to fail (split) and cause vibration throughout the car. It normally sounds like a knock at lower revs. Its annoying when they go as its very hard to tell without taking the shock off. Mine went and depending on the weather (heat of rubber) the noise would come and go took me a good while to track the issue down, i thought it was a loose nut on the steering rack for a while (another common issue).

Hi Rob and Chris. Please watch out for the gear selector switch. I had an intermittent limp mode light on my 3.0 E85 Z4 at 66000 miles and I could go months without the gear cog appearing and then without warning it would appear but dissappear after re cycling the ignition switch. I got fed up with the uncertainty of would it wouldn't it that I had it changed. It was an easy fix as it's on the side of the gearbox but cost me as I had to by a BMW one. You can fix yourself by taking apart and cleaning up the metal contacts. If you leave it then I wouldn't be surprised if it goes into limp mode again at a later date.

    Cracking video Rob! Great purchase.
I have owned numerous BMW's, these ZF5HP's that this era of BMW E38/E39/E46 are absolutely indestructible, they will run forever and ever, however they are quite sensitive to the quality of the gearbox oil. Just to let you know as well with regards to the occasional knocking as you drive along, all E46's in the world do it in their life, it is the rubber prop shaft 'doughnut' coupling, they don't always wear terribly visibly, it is right through where they mount, so you need to really inspect them to notice the wear in them.

Not finished watching yet. Only got to the viscous fan part. My 330CI viscous coupling went so i changed it and i also done the water pump/belts and pulleys as they are well known to go and grumble/vibrate like no ones business when the car is warm. If that coupling needs changing then that water pump and the rest will do as well. Water pumps are known to go on these 330CI's and when they do they cause a fair bit of damage at the front costings hundreds or even a seized engine. Now i will continue to watch..

Looks really nice apart from the spoiler, that does it no favours, some CSL wheels would set it off really well too. Nice quick flip that lads.

My V6 Z4 does the same thing if you don't use it for a while I get the gear box warning light however run it up until its warm before selecting a gear always does the trick. Estoril blue is my fave colour for an MSport BMW lovely car and great video 👍

The nearside wheel with very slight friction is fine ,bearing in mind new pads have been fitted, the offside probably needs the caliper replaced.I have a 2001 330ci individual in Messing metalic at 53K.That's a lovely car you have, however they can be problematic as I've learnt over the years, usually with elecrical components. The transmission ZF HP5 is brilliant and it would be worth changing the ATF with new filter and gasket.M54 best engine ever,I would'nt be able to sell that ClubSport if it was mine, especially in that colour.

I had a couple of these a few years back (although not a Clubsport) - they're very competent cars, and quite practical too (split-folding rear seats, which aren't standard in the saloon). One was a manual, the other an automatic. In all honesty, I think the automatic suits the character of the car better - it's more an effortless cruiser, than it is a B-road slayer. Such a good looking thing compared to the E90 (and I've got one!). Well done for finding one that hasn't got rusty body panels.

Winner!!! Winner!!! Chicken dinner!!! You can tell Rob really likes this car: ‘Yeah, I’m going to have to put a month’s tax on it and put a few hundred miles on it just to make sure it’s completely fine before it goes up for sale!!?’ ‘If’ it goes up for sale you mean??! 😉🤣🤣🤣 I can see him handing over half the money to Chris instead and keeping it 😎😆🤣🤣🤣 It makes you wonder why the guy still wanted to get rid of it even though you said it could be an easy fix? Incredible how it was simply the battery because of how long it had been sat throughout the lockdown!!? 😮😬👍🏻

Now I am in love with that, I could see myself in it.
I could tell it had a CD multi changer but I would have to change the head unit to a CD one as the tape deck ages the car badly.
Reseal the underside to stop any rust coming in and that's about it, a good blast on the motorway and some super unleaded would have it 100%.

What a lovely car! You fell on your feet with this one. Just mind your hand doesn't get bitten when you come to sell it. These last two vids have been fascinating and it's nice to see you getting some good offers of decent cars to flip without getting too dirty.

I had the same car with a manual box. I had a new near-side calliper. It just wouldn’t let go - seized. I loved that car. If you take the vacuum tube off the rear silencer the butterfly valve stays open and sounds ace! 👍🏼

It is true that they throw up codes with a dead battery. I had a super comfy 1998 E39 but I hardly used it due to illness. It used to sit for three months at a time and by that time the starter just clicked followed by a raft of faults on the dash (in text, not just the symbols most had).
Just recharging the battery started it fine but the fault codes was stored in memory. I bought a cheap diagnostic reader just to clear the codes and the service lights. I had that vehicle for 16 years and to this day, I still miss it . Out of curiosity, I checked on the GOV website if it got taxed since and yeah, its still going to this day.
