Building this homestead has literally been YEARS in the making. While we may not fit into the traditional boxes of off grid living or homesteading, that's the beauty building this simple life in the woods...it's on our terms and we're figuring it out as we go. Hope you enjoyed today's video!
The idea to build a shipping container home was definitely one of the wildest ones we've had and if you've been joining our weekly videos for any amount of time you know that's saying something. Without question, it's a project that is much more difficult than we thought it would be but we're having fun along the way and that's what counts. How did we get here?
After a year of full time travel living the van life, we had to adapt when the world changed. To keep busy we’ve converted our tiny house on wheels into a fully functioning off grid home that has everything we need. Realizing that none of us know how long this new normal will stick around, we made the decision that building a home here was the best decision we could make. We've spent the last year doing EVERYTHING involved with coordinating and planning the build ourselves as well as setting up this off grid property to be able to provide us with the the food we'll need in the future. That led us to needing a place to live while we realized our dream of building a shipping container home. After lots of searching we finally discovered Geodesic Dome's and it was the perfect fit for us while we took our time with the container home.
Ok, so I'm going to try and not be a total sap here (but no promises)...I can't believe that it's been FOURTEEN years with you, nine of them I've been lucky enough to call you my husband. I could've never imagined all the twists and turns that life's path would take us on, especially over these last few years. Not everyday is easy but waking up next to you and choosing to continue building this life together is and will always be the greatest gift you've ever given me. Something to think about, screen in your roof top deck. You will be so glad you did. No bugs! You can leave the doors open for a nice breeze and no bugs and the animals can go in and out safely for fresh air. I screened mine in years ago and it was the best decision. Love your home you are creating. I always look forward to the video each Sunday!
I often think of doing that with my balcony. It wouldn’t just stop the bugs, it would also stop the pigeons (this year they laid eggs in a flower pot and kept trying to build their nests on the balcony) as well as the leaves from the adjacent trees falling onto my balcony in autumn. I’m just not sure my landlord would agree to it and how expensive it would be.

Some housing projects can reduce people to tears, But you know what? At least you have the experience to build off-grid housing units so that other parts of the world can take hints or experiences, take what they like, and leave the rest.

Hey guys, before you seal up all the walls, each of you needs to write a message on paper. Date it and then insert it into your wall. Just something personal. That is what my father did when he built his first house. The new owners were renovating it and found it. We as my dad's kids never knew about it. How sentimental.
I am constantly reminded there is no progress or accomplishment without sacrifice. And you two have sailed through with grace.❤❤❤

The process of sticking all that to the outside looked like a huge pain in the ass, no wonder you got frustrated, I know I would not have the patience to work with it. Those wedding photos where y'all were looking so young and Tyler getting emotional. So touching. Y'all have aged 30 years in the four or five years working on that house. What a beautiful setting. Seems to me that this is similar to 'hanging' wallpaper or window film...where you use a squeege or roller to flatten a short area at a time as you pull down the release paper slowly. do not get too far ahead with the release paper, or bubbles will form. I used to hang wallpaper, and had my own window film business (ancient history) so I know that this works. Smoothing it out with your hands after pulling the release paper down a lot means instant bubbles!
