The idea to build a shipping container home was definitely one of the wildest ones we've had and if you've been joining our weekly videos for any amount of time you know that's saying something. Without question, it's a project that is much more difficult than we thought it would be but we're having fun along the way and that's what counts. How did we get here?
After a year of full time travel living the van life, we had to adapt when the world changed. To keep busy we’ve converted our tiny house on wheels into a fully functioning off grid home that has everything we need. Realizing that none of us know how long this new normal will stick around, we made the decision that building a home here was the best decision we could make. We've spent the last year doing EVERYTHING involved with coordinating and planning the build ourselves as well as setting up this off grid property to be able to provide us with the the food we'll need in the future. That led us to needing a place to live while we realized our dream of building a shipping container home. After lots of searching we finally discovered Geodesic Dome's and it was the perfect fit for us while we took our time with the container home.
Even though things didn't exactly work for Charlie's big 10th birthday, nor for the blueberry patch or pretty much anything else lately LOL...it was a day well spent together with lots of laughs. You wouldn't believe how much we can't fit in these videos because so much is said behind the scenes, hope you didn't mind having a little lunch and learn with us this week 😂

What a treat it is when Todd starts rambling. Could we get a regular-scheduled time for Todd to sit with a bottle of wine and take us on a journey through his mind. 🤯 “Talk Time with Todd”. Yes, Tyler, you’ll be present to occasionally roll your eyes, laugh and keep his wine glass full. I’m here for it!! 🍷😂
As a grandmother myself, I just love how you both think of Todd’s grandmother and how to make her visits with you safe and enjoyable. You both are such amazing, kind men.
Wonder how many people feel happier watching you two every weekend as you share your lives? I know I do. All of the plants have gotten huge! All of the work you have done is amazing, it's an awesome little world you've built for yourselves. We all need that, even if we live in a tiny apartment. Our homes are our sanctuary, yours is one many people can only dream about.
To get rid of the potatoe bugs you have to spray a mixture of milk and and neem oil onto your plants. That stops the development cycle (egg -> larva -> bug) of the potatoe bugs. You probably already have larva in the ground so you will have this potatoe bug problem too next year. Next year as soon as the plants come out of the ground or you see little bugs (they are tinny and of a reddish colour in the beginning) spray the milk-neem oil mixture. You also have to pick the bugs of your plants every day to prevent them from eating your potatoe plants. With the help of the milk-neem oil mixture it should should be able to reduce the amount of potatoe bugs. Just be careful to not overdue it with them neem oil as it can burn the plants. One ml of neem oil for about 200-250ml of milk is enough.
We hand picked the bugs everyday then sprayed with neem oil mixed with water and soap . The sprinkled Diatomaceous powder on the ground . It worked . I’m wondering what the milk does ?
The milk sticks to the tracheole (breathing system) and kills them. It’s also good for preventing mildew because it changes the ph on the leaves. It also makes the neem oil stick to the plants and bugs and therefore you would not have to use soap, which contains chemicals you don’t want in your garden soil.
I read neem oil is bad for you also the diat.... so please research before you do any spraying.
When I have potato crop failure, I rotate beds. It's not always cold enough to stop next year's potato bug problem where I live. I also have gotten rotten potato start and the potato plants looked good but the potatoes they produced were mush. For some reason in my garden beds, Southern Oregon, this year the potatoes are really producing but the tomatoes and peppers - not.

@@tylerandtodd when you get to the green house...hit me up for some suggestions for sub tropical/tropical plants/shrubs....since leaving Ontario for the volcanic soils of the Auckland volcanic field....there are alot of plants you might not be aware of....

Suckers are FREE tomato plants. Stick them in water and roots grow and provides you with round two tomatoes.
Omg, my best is when Todd speaks on behalf of the dogs. It makes me laugh every time. The homestead is really looking great. Sorry to hear about the potato bugs wiping out the crop. So sad.

Growing up with a family of 11, our garden was about 1/4 acre. Debugging the potatoes was one of the most gross chores on a hot summer day. We still ended up buying 100 plus crates of potatoes to get us thru the winter. Enjoying my brunch while you are eating.
The garden is looking so good. So sorry about the potatoes, tater bugs are the blight of farmers.

Happy Birthday Charlie. Your conversation about resources running out and all the space junk really hit a cord with me. I'm in my late 60's and I often think to myself: With how messed up the world is now with hatred, bad weather, overwhelming poverty (the list goes on), if I was given the chance to go back to my 20's or 30's, my answer would be a resounding NO because if the world is so bad now, I can't imagine what it will be like in 20, 30 or 40 years. I fell blessed that I grew up in the 50/60/70's - yes, we didn't have the technology we do now, but times were much simpler.
I’m with you all the way. I tell my grandchildren that I grew up in a much happier and simplistic time and how good that was. Im 72 and I’m glad I’m on the down hill run because I don’t like how the world is today it’s all about greed and me me me. Our politicians and the rich are do this to the world but not many people seem to care because they only think of themselves and not about the world and how the next generation is going to cope.
The baby boomers of which I am one gave our children far to much because we grew up with nothing but in doing that we made them greedy and selfish.
My husband (of nearly 51 years) and I gave as much as we could afford to our children but we taught our kids that they had to work for what they have and thank goodness they have married women who were also taught to work hard for what they have.

August is NOT the time to plant Blueberries. At any rate you have Blueberries, in spring when you prune, you root the "sticks" in a combo of sand and Sphagnum moss. Stick them in, leave them alone except for watering, don't let them dry out but don't give them wet feet!

Plant the blueberry plants along the edges of the 'pond', or along the edges of the river, where you can kayak to collect them. It's so fun to take your boat out and harvest from the edges :)

When the plants come up that you did not plant,we call them volunteers ! I think you need to order the berry bushes in the early spring next year .

Hey guys…blueberries need full sun and a very specific PH soil….you may want to get a Ph meter and plan it out for spring planting.
You may do better with a early bearing red raspberry patch there and prepare a separate area for blueberry patch.

Those bugs on the potatoes are Potato Beetles…They need to be squished as soon as you see them or they will devour the entire leafy plant. Here on PEI, farmers usually handle them with insecticide and crop rotation, but us backyard gardeners just squish them! 😊

My Nova Scotian Grampy grew a large garden of potatoes. He would pick the potato bugs off the leaves, put them on his hot cast iron stove and say to me, "That'll show you not to get into Grampy's potato patch!" I was always a bit shocked as a 11 year old as they died there on the black surface of heat but the memory is still engrained in my mind. The good memories of his garden were the long cylindrical carrots he would pull and wipe of on his pants offering to me. They were delicious. He also had the best row of raspberries perfectly ripe while we visited mid summer. We still have the double pink Poppies that magically show up in our gardens just like he made space for in his. He was quite the character to say the least. Good ole Grampy from Oxford Nova Scotia.💚

So that is where all of our rain is going. It's like a desert here in Kentucky. You have to use gallons and gallons of water everyday for gardens. You guys it's MISERABLE!!! This week the heat index is going to be in the 3 digits. No rain expected until next weekend if then even. Your place looks so good.
