  • This is the answer to the question viewiers have been asking me for some time. I am somewhat embarassed and more than a little uncomfortable talking about this topic, but I feel like I'm disapointing people if I don't respond. So here it is.

Well done, Marine. This video is almost five years old now and hope you've been able to maintain your healthy slimness. - I am a little older (73) now and am on the same journey having lost 44 pounds in the last 90 days by reducing calories to 1,800 a day with a maximum of 20 carbs a day. From 229 to 185 so far, works for me! I don't feel like I am on a diet, it has now become a permanent change in lifestyle. - Semper Fi Brother

Wow...this may be the first truly honest weight loss explanation I've heard. I have struggled with weight most of my adult life. I used to be very active and ate a lot to maintain. I then got into law enforcement and became sedentary but still ate the same. I need to lose about 100lbs. I've been trying for some time now but it's always down 30 up 40. I do obsess over the number on the scale. You have changed my thinking on this and I am going to make this happen...hrfunk style. Thank you for making this video and for the inspiration sir.

Without question one of the best videos I've seen on RUclips irrespective of subject. As someone in your age bracket, this is one of the most practical narratives I've seen on weight loss. Didn't expect to see it on a 2A subject channel, but it speaks for itself. Continue as you were - stay the course - you are an inspiration to others. I'm 6'1, currently 280, former football lineman, targeting to 220. Semper Fi - thank you for your service! Your other videos are exemplary as well.

I trust that you will take it as a compliment when I say this... I have seen several of your older videos pre weight loss, and I didn't realize you were the same person.
More impressive than the actual weight loss is that you have kept it off four years later. As anyone who has lost a decent amount of weight knows, losing it is the easy part - keeping it off is the real test.

Wow! You look so much leaner and congratulations on overcoming that weight! I got out of the Marines almost a year ago and packed on the pounds, my heaviest weight which was 242lbs, I was not happy with myself. Since missing being in the military so I started on my path to lose weight to enlist in the Army which I am closer to making tape now I weigh 220lbs. Things that helped diet wise was sticking to foods that are closest to its natural form, have fruits, vegetables, salads. Run til I burn 1K calories on my cardio days, at minimum burn 700 calories through HIT workout or on a rest days go on a 6 mile walk. Finding the discipline and motivation to stay consistent for me was pretty much self indoctrination of surrounding myself with things that resemble what I want to achieve and listen to people on podcasts that have achieved their goals, how they dealt with the struggles, what they have learned, and how joyful they are to achieve those goals. All of that created my laser focus to pursue the goals I want to acquire.

Brilliant achievement hrfunk, just done the same thing myself over the last few months and like yourself, I could not care less what I weigh, just getting back in shape. I also agree that one does not want to do too much exercise when you reach our age, just enough to keep sharp. I also do press ups every morning and 5 minutes of weights. I actually lost quite a lot of weight by splitting wood and a bit of running. However I really hate running so my solution might amuse you! I have 100 acres of woods so I invested in a duelling tree and 20 AR500 10 inch gongs and set them up on swinging mountings over a short 1 mile course which rises 120 feet in altitude through the woods. Every other day I run with my Buckmark .22 carbine (we are only allowed semi-autos in .22 over here) on a 'run and shoot' sprint between targets which I engage at 25 yards. Let me tell you it is an extremely good way to gauge fitness because you can see your 'recovery time' between targets reducing week by week and it makes getting in shape fun! Plus it really improves your snap shooting ability when hunting.

One has to watch the amount of sodium ingested as well. The maximum sodium intake for an adult male, according to the FDA, is 2,420 mg per day, and they would like to bring that figure down to 1,500. One thing to lower one's sodium level, is to switch from processed deli turkey, to fresh turkey still on the bone. That would be harder to find though. I "almost fainted" when I heard about the pretzels. Even "no salt added" pretzels are high in sodium. I go for those "Hint of Salt" Triscuit crackers at 50 mg of sodium in 6 crackers, and they're made from whole wheat. Too much sodium can lead to high blood pressure, hypertension, heart attack or stroke. High blood pressure can also damage one's kidneys. My best advice, is to ask a medical doctor and a nutritionist. An adjustment in nutrition quality can improve one's wellness without changing caloric intake. Talk to a doctor first. Thanks for the videos! P.S. A bottle of "Spike", no salt added, can deliver lots of flavor without adding sodium. One can find it in most health food stores. You might want to check out "Diet for a Small Planet", by Dr. Francis Moore Lappe. It shows how to combine grains and vegetables to get protein. "Food for thought". Hope this helps!

"Ach du lieber, mein freund"! As a subscriber, this is my second comment to one of your videos. Wonderful video here!! You look like a million bucks (not does!)! My story. Years ago I went from 265lbs down to 200lbs in about a year (I was about 5ft 11 1/2" tall or so). A doctor I used to have swore at me & said he'd be looking for me in the obituaries! I was pre-diabetic. My wife's mother went blind because of being diabetic. My diet success was from eating 3 moderate meals a day, NO second helpings & NO snacking (almost!), & using our exercycle every day for 5 miles a day. That was hard for me to keep as I "lived to eat"! But with my wife's help, I made the weight loss. I am 78 now & "only" borderline" diabetic but have good eyesight. I don't pay too much attention to my diet, but I am about 210lbs now. My wife carefully watches the kinds of foods & drinks I have & have regular doctor checkups. Also, when I was 13 years old, I was 5ft 11 1/2" & 183lbs. I have to admit though that where "you go in", I "go out"!!! Also too, wish I had a "flat top" haircut like yours! I don't have enough!!! Don't forget, Jesus is waiting patiently for you.

I too, struggled with my weight since I was a kid.
Went from 200lbs down to 145lbs my Sophomore summer.
I retired in 2009 and stayed around 240-250lbs until I bought a two-story house and my knees hurt when going up and down the stairs.
I dropped down to 200lbs and fluctuate between 180-210lbs.
After over being on 12 diets, dieting should be lowering carbs and by weeks-months until your goal is reached. Last year, it took 3 weeks to drop 3 pounds to 198.
Carbs are what causes hunger pains.

Winston regular red box), and not ashamed to admit it. Seldom are the joys in this life. Never was that fond of food. I only eat once a day. Dinner. Coffee? Oh yes. It is a wake up call. Problem is, if you ignore that call. No good can come from that.

When one has diabetes, as I do, you are hungry all of the time.
Sometimes you can be hungry, eat a full meal and still be just as hungry as you were before the meal.
Keep the weight off and try to avoid having diabetes as much as you can.

Congratulations, and especially on maintaining the progress. My motivation was being the first male in my family to live past the age of 45 in 3 generations. At age 39 I got into the best shape of my life. At 5'6" I was benching 235 pounds while weighing 165, but did not maintain. Later, at age 48 I needed a stent in my heart anyway. Exercised again after that, slowed down, and then hit it hard. Got in even BETTER shape at 54, jogging 4 miles 3 times a week, lifting weights 3 alternating days, but not to the same level of strength. However, for the first time in my life I was able to see my abs. I was not ripped in any way (in my torso) but I could see the lines of my abs, and never saw that before in my life. That took an incredible amount of dedication to reach, and I only wanted to see if I could get there. Then in 2020 everything (society) shut down. I got lazy again, and now ready to get back at it, but at a more realistic level. I also ate more "right" during those times too. Gotta get back to that too. I appreciate the motivation and hearing how you achieved your success. Thank you for sharing.

Hello sir! I've been on RUclips for a while now but just recently come across your channel while watching other "firearm channels". I got to tell ya , I wish I would have come across your sooner! You're real, honest, knowledgable, and provide a great amount of information! THIS VIDEO HERE..., and I realize it was made a while ago, but so helpful to me today!! We are the exact same age and I too went to the doctor's office and was told to loose weight and considered "pre-diabetic". Your tips on how you lost the weight sound reasonable and doable . I get the part of feeling hungry sucks but eat alternative meals and snacks I can do...! Thank you for taking the time to make "THIS VIDEO" and share with us your personal thoughts and having the courage to be REAL with your body! Thank you for sharing, thank you for your service, both in the military and law enforcement!!

Matt, my apologies for my snarky remark. I'll leave it up for the flame throwers and not erase it. But I'm not a dietician nor a doctor. I was originally echoing what has been drummed into my head my whole life about eating breakfast. I don't think it needs to be done as soon as you put your pants on and I also don't think a piece of fruit or glass of oj will cut it. If interested in knowing, I drive a truck here on So Cal locally.

However it works out, his system is still working three years later. That’s great.
But I have always heard that one should eat breakfast like a King, lunch like a Prince and dinner like a Pauper. The idea being, that eating a heavy meal before bedtime (not just before bedtime, but as a last main meal Of the day), leaves You with unburnt calories all night.
A big (bigger?) breakfast replenishes you and carries you over to the upcoming meals. Breakfast is supposed to help your thought processes too. Which should be helpful if you have a “normal” (daytime) work schedule.

I’ve been on a journey to lose weight myself. I destroyed my knee and was assigned to work a desk and over the course of 10 years I gained about 250 lbs. Over the last three years I’ve lost 200 of those lbs and am working on the last 50. I did exactly what you did. No breakfast, a turkey or ham sandwich every day for lunch, and 1000 calories for dinner. It works.

Perfect video. I am 55 and keep adding a little weight each year after retiring. I am on the turnaround and will need to cut my 24 hour calorie intake. I just started with a few weeks of cutting wood(9k altitude) and then 5 days of very hard hunting at 9 thousand feet. I dropped 10 pounds, and like when I dropped 20 pounds a few years back on a longer hunt, I looked in the mirror and said to myself another 20 might show up! It's amazing how much fat can be on your back side. So 24 hour calorie count will be in order. The one thing that happens hunting and cutting wood is I'm out of the house away from the junk. This last hunt I would eat a few things for breakfast then leave the trailer all day. I would return at dark, tired and eat a Marie Callender's tv dinner and go to bed(no snaking after dinner). Those are dinners much smaller than what I would normally eat without hunting. The exercise is one thing, but cutting 24 hour calories is really where it will work. Thanks for the motivation!

Well the education your giving me in these gun videos has been great. But now this one, I have lost 70lb and took a break. Had my knee replaced, they would not do the surgery until I lost weight. Now I'm back working on it, yes its work and a pain in the ass. I have 70lb to go and I'm committed to get there. 63 years old always been fat.
At 230-40 I'll be in my 30s weight and I'll be happy. When I quit working I just slowly gained and gained. Had a very physical job and retired very early.
So the structure is very real and I'm picking up an old hobby of shooting. The world has changed and regret selling all my firearms long ago.

Thanks for posting this and keep up the good work. I had a similar experience, and as much as a diet sucks, once you see how "easy" it is to make the necessary changes to your life and to get the weight off, it gets easier. You do find new things to eat and drink that are satisfying and enjoyable and even the exercise becomes fun, because you can see the end results.

Nice video. I was a career Security enforcement Officer, before the Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis became to much and i had to go on disability. Now because of both of these auto- immune diseases i am a diabetic. And i want to let you know that diet pop is Not as safe as they say. All the artificial sugars are NOT good for anyone. in reality they can cause increased hunger in people. I myself found out when i cut out the diet pop during the day,i was not eating all night after supper. Plus i started loosing weight. i'm down from 258lbs to about 245lbs. Better then i was,and still more to go. I thank you for your video, it is going to inspire me to loose even more.

This is just the most simple, logical and practical approach I ever heard. I did the exact same thing. I'm 6'6" and clocked in at 285 a couple years ago. Basically reduced calorie intake/intermittent fast. It ain't rocket science. I competed in judo for many years and ran long distance. Last year at 46 I had to have both my hips replaced. I just can't do what I used to but on top of intermittent fast/ calorie reduction I try to walk 5 miles a day. Down almost to my fighting weight of 100 kilos. I think if people just looked at it this way no one would have weight issues. Basically you just got to use more calories than you consume and its gotta be la lifestyle not a diet. I had no idea what I weighed til the Dr. last week. Good work sir.

Good job! I lost 40 pounds over 1 1/2 years, but I couldn't have done it without a reason. Mine was different than yours, but I learned it had to be MY reason, not my wife's, or anyone elses.
I am a retired Medical Engineer, but more important to me was that I was about to lose my class III flight medical as I am also a Private Pilot. The thought of losing my freedom to fly among the clouds again, well, it was just too much for me to accept. I put myself on a diet, and it worked. Eating less was difficult for the first 2 weeks. By then, my body didn't need the amount of food, I had become use to. Just kept everything going, and looking back, it really wasn't that difficult.
Have a STRONG reason, and keep it up. After those 2 weeks, your body requires less to survive, and it became quite easy to keep with the plan.
I came down from 200lbs to 160. All is well, and I am now regulated and really rarely even feel hungry anymore. Best to you as well.

I retired maybe too early and didn’t realize the physical changes that would happen. I was Power company Line Foreman and worked on average 55hrs.a week....not including storms. I’m retired 11 yrs. and am 67 yrs. now . I cut my walking down to 5 miles a day and burn wood for heat up here in Glens Falls (foot hills to Adirondacks) NY. The exercise is great. I will tell you ...your metabolic is forever slowing ......the big walks help. Good Luck. Loved that M&P 2.0 video !

    First, thankyou for your service.
This "diet" is similar to what I implemented to lose wait a few years back. No fast food, no food after 9:00 p.m., no Cokes (soda), and I carried a case of bottled water in my car and drink a bottle whenever a craving arose. As for what, when and how much I ate, I ate anything at lunch and dinner and as much as I wanted.
No exercise other than 2-30 minute walks a day.
    Over a 10 month period I lost 80 pounds.
I kept the weight off for a few years.
I deviated from my routine a few years back (hard divorce), but at age 59 I have to something. I know I did it once and have confidence I can do it again.
