Thanks for taking the time to share with us Buddy! 73 - Dino KLØS
Another enjoyable video - thanks Buddy!
I will comment if needed later in the video but I have to say I LOVE your intro music. It puts my mind at ease as a truck driver I have many pressures that influence my mind state but love that music that calms me down. 73, ad0am
Great fix for the B&K but more problems lurk . You got your work cut out for you with these babies with every one having
a different cause for it to not be working. A Rigol spectrum analyzer is an awesome tool for the bench. I need to get one
( don't we all)! Have a happy Easter Buddy.
I think im going to love this channel!
I wouldn't mind finding myself a couple of B&K 2040's to go with the pair of 1040's I have.
Oh wow, I only saw the one next to the HP unit when I typed my first line. Nice to see simple old tools like that being brought back to life!!
I look forward to the next video on this unit. I enjoyed the presentation of the steps you took to narrow down the PLL problems. Thank you for sharing.
wow!
Buddy this is a wonderful offering! I am really enjoying the work on the B&K 2040. You make it look so simple.... and it really makes sense AS you are going through it. I watched THIS the way my wife watches "Yellowstone"!!!!!!!!!
Once again, a very enjoyable video, Buddy. I sincerely hope you are doing better now that spring is just about upon us. I did get a new radio, a Yaesu 991a and I love the radio. Cheers & 73 from W Rusty Lane K9POW in eastern Tennessee
Hi Buddy,
No doubt you will get it fully repaired. Happy Easter and stay safe. 73 WJ3U
Nice. PLLs are fun 😂
Thanks for the video. Happy Easter to you and your family. 🐰
This PLL stuff is beyond me but Thanks for the video, take care Buddy
Can be very complicated Bill.
Hi Buddy! Nice to see your video!! Thanks
Hey Buddie nice to see you at the bench again and hope you are all sorted now Looking forward to a follow up on these anchors. Happy Easter form across the pond (UK).
HI Buddy-thanks for your new video, hope you are feeling better and it nice to see you fighting with stuff again ,carry on going sir -you have been missed !!!
Nice to see the spectrum analyser in use. I use my Rigol a lot in the workshop
Buddy, will you consider doing A video using a Kenwood Ts-820S explaining the signal path from RF,IF, VFO, PLL, and Digital Display? The service manual is quite vague on theory of operation.
Tesmen contacted me too for reviews on those meters, I decided not to do them as I just don’t have the time.
i have one also same problem, wanna get rid of one of them after you fix it? lol jk Buddy. fantastic videos !! I sure wish Mike had not stopped making and working on radios too. you and him are two of my fav tubers
Thanks and I miss him too.
GREAT!!! I have a B & K 2040 with the same issue! Hopefully i can glean some nugget of insight as to what the issue is...
Hey Buddy. I enjoy your troubleshooting techniques. I was looking at all the tantalum capacitors in the PLL unit and wondering if they might be the cause of the op amp failure? I know they can get leaky with old age?
Merci for this video. 👍 Have you check C354 (in the low pass filter)?
Yep, C354 is good.
Nice to have you back Buddy. What are those units used for? CB radio repair?
If you don't mind.... just giving Buddy a hand...... if you are talking about the B&K 2040 ... think of it as a "specialized" RF generator "tailored" to be useful particularly on CB radios. It is a phase locked loop based generator but the frequency selection is by a "channel selector" like a CB radio. It goes from Channel 1 up to Channel 45. It has AM modulation 400Hz, 1000 Hz, 2500Hz AND has an external input so that you can plug anything into it that you might need. Modulation level is adjustable from 0% to 100%.
It also has a 455 Khz output as some alignments call for feeding 455 Khz straight to the IF stages to get them aligned first.
It also has a Delta Shift feature that lets you "scoot" the carrier frequency up or down by 5 Khz either way. THIS is useful in working on SSB radios. Set your radio on a channel, set the 2040 on the same channel BUT slide it UP by 1 Khz (for USB) or down 1 Khz (for LSB) and NOW you have RF coming it at a 1 Khz audio tone that you can track through the radio.
It also has a calibrated "step attenuator" that drops the signal down in the range of -110 dBm up to -10 dBm.
One more thing... it has a "noise generator" to help troubleshoot Noise Blanker problems and allow you to calibrate the NOise Blanker on the radio.
Sorry for jumping in on Buddy's answer....but I love these things and am really excited to see him tearing into another one!
I am in the process of learning, how too use this particular unit my meters are in the same boat as the unit you are working on,they don't reach the top of the scale, and as far as being on frequency it seems too be I haven't checked the 455 KHZ yet too see if it's working, still in the process of getting too know this unit,I'm sure it's in need of service, are you talking in any more work, and what would your turn around time be,if you would be interested in this particular job? Thank you for your time Walt
How does dividing 0.64kHz by 128 produce 5kHz?
I goofed the division on that one. Working on it.
Not sure I agree with your general comments about the B&K 2040 PLL problems! PLL's ARE complex circuits, but in my experience of electronics, when you have 5 of the same product showing the same symptom, 3 or even 4 of those will probably have the SAME fault(s)! I wonder how close their serial numbers are - maybe a batch problem?
I do wish you were correct. Two units are working now and on the third one.2nd unit had a bad VCO coil. Third unit has an unlock and running PLL. S/N 00378, 01834, 02571, 02679, 04129, 05029.
@@TheRadioShop :(( Oh dear!! Good luck with the rest!
