If you haven't ever played a tomb raider game and want an experience similar to the original with good accessibility, play the remake of the first one aka tomb raider anniversary 2007. Otherwise play the 2013 reboot.
Screw that noise, get a windows PC, download gidierre’s mandatory PS1 music restoration mod, open the file “dosboxTR.conf and upscale the game to 1024x768, and PLAY THE ORIGINAL GAME! It was meant to be played on a PC, and is an experience like no other.
There are 3 trilogy’s of tomb raider, classic, LAU, reboot. Classic are the classic PS1/PS2 games which are TR1, TR2, TR3, TR4. TR5, TR6. They are amazing and all connect to each other. These are also available on steam. Controls aren’t that bad as people say, they aren’t the best but are easy to use. I prefer the steam version of TR because of the save system. This is a really good trilogy and many in the TR fandom love and prefer it :) The LAU trilogy was made by another company, Crystal Dynamics. There was a new storyline with 3 games, TR LEGEND, TR ANNIVERSARY, TR UNDERWORLD. This is one of the best trilogy’s ever. Everything about the storyline is amazing. The original six games aren’t mentioned in this trilogy so you don’t need to play them to play this trilogy. Release date order goes LEGEND, ANNIVERSARY, UNDERWORLD however the storyline version goes in ANNIVERSARY, LEGENG, UNDERWORLD. That’s the only time that happens. A lot of people love this trilogy and younger fans started playing these games first :) The reboot story is a whole different story then anything we’ve seen before. We get to see a younger Lara and see her first adventure. This video make the game look bad, yes she is weaker since this is a whole different story and it’s her first adventure but it IS a tomb raider game and we appreciate it. We get to see Lara turn from this weak little girl to a powerful bad ass that she is. There are 3 games in this trilogy (so far) and they are, TR 2013, RISE OF THE TOMB RAIDER, SHADOW OF THE TOMB RAIDER. These games were now developed by square enix. The storyline all connect and like before you don’t have to play the other TR games to play this trilogy. Overall the reboot is a good trilogy and we really see Lara turn into a tomb raider. You can start playing tomb raider starting with the first game in each trilogy. If you play TR1 then play it until TR6. If you play TR LEGEND (or anniversary), play it until TR UNDERWORLD. And if you play TR 2013, play it until shadow of the tomb raider. It’s a very fun franchise and I love it to death. My personal favourite trilogy is the classic trilogy but many have different opinions. Enjoy playing :)
I would say though you should play TR legend-Relic run as that is the complete legend timeline. Two trilogies. It’s nice to see the events after underworld with guardian of light and Lara free of family drama and just having fun with the adventure. Guardian of light, temple of Osiris, and relic run are so important in that timeline 💖.
I enjoyed playing the prequel because it was gritty, tough, and a bit traumatic, I wouldn't recommend it to first timers but it was an amazing journey and gameplay for me personally because I liked how the character development of a younger Lara Croft played out.
The trilogy Tomb Raider (Legend, Anniversary and Underworld) are indeed the best TR games. Lara has always been that kick ass girl that always follows her path and whoever is on her way, she makes sure to beat them up properly. However the trilogy Lara (2013, ROTTR and SOTTR) doesnt just look different, but she is also more of a survivor girl that is constantly worried and likes to be accepted by other humans, helps them out and has a hard time saying no. And she is also way less acrobatic. For me the real Tomb Raider and Lara Croft existed in the classic and trilogy versions. However I read somewhere that the next TR game will be a remix of the old and new ones. Let's hope for that.
Crystal Dynamics, Square enix are making a anime series for Netflix on the legend stories from the past Crystal games. Its starts after the Shadow of the Tomb Raider game.
Underworld introduced me to Tomb Raider as a gamer (I had previously observed a friend playing Legend but I wasn't yet into those kinds of games at the time). What hooked me was mostly the exotic environments Underworld brought me to, my favorite being Thailand.
@@Lia-uf1ir I'm playing Underworld right now, it's my favorite! And my favorite level is also Thailand, it's beautiful and... THERE ARE NO GIANT SPIDERS!!! :P
Og 1996 tomb raider *with the save crystals* is the only way to start playing tomb raider. The controls are part of the game. You need to learn them, develop your skills, and perfect through trial and error. Its like the dark souls of 1996. The puzzle, combat, exploration in that game is just amazing, and well ahead of its time. The game is supposed to challenge you with percision jumping that requires reflexes and muscle memory. The lack of quick save makes it all the more rewarding to finally reach that save crystal you see off in the distance simply taunting you.The remake made it so user friendly, that the experience is ruined by how easy it is. You're no longer tested, your hand is held throughout the game. The puzzles are at a third grade level, the jumping holds no challenge, its just a basic walk-through of the og with pretty new graphics. Og 1996 tomb raider is a masterpiece and instead of complaining it's out of date, git gud!
100% agree. The controls weren't bad: he was just playing the game wrong. He ran of ledges because he didn't press the walk button and he jumped up walls... just walk up to them and press the action button.
I mean the controls were great for the time but are definitely dated now. But you're right that the remake acted like the difficulty wasn't supposed to be there. The difficulty and puzzles was the whole entire reason I enjoyed the originals.
Tomb Raider 2013 had to go through some major changes that's some fans just got to get over with. Some of the fans got tired of the same past formula. But it changes was for a good. I think the developers did a good job.
The Tomb Raider prequel was my favourite one... Your criticism was kinda focused on the fact that it was just too similar to other 3rd person games. Not sure why that is a bad thing. The remake was ok, but still felt dated in a lot of ways.
@@silentsaturn7604 I guess. I liked the old games back in the day for sure, I just find them so hard to replay now. I agree it's different, but I find it "good" different.
@@HarveyTAS eh dated? i played it for the first time some months back and i enjoyed it a lot. it has a good sense of atmosphere . art style's good and the gameplay is smooth . i played the 2013 version a lot mostly cause of how satisfactory the gameplay is, but i didn't give a crap about lara as much as i did for the 2000's version, lara was just more charismatic in the 2000's version.
@@rohithkumar8708 Trilogy is masterpiece and classics are too . The new game is hated just because of uncharted , people are thinking that it is a copy but they don't know the history who started treasure huntering game . I played classics and the new reboot and I have no hate towards it . The community of tomb raider is extremely pickly , some like that , some hate that etc and the studio can't satisfies them all
@@jayasolanki1319 me too man. i like the 2013 ones too , I don't necessarily dislike them. they're fun , they're a lot like uncharted yes. but it's still fun
Have you played the PC version of tomb raider 2? For some reason the difficulty was amplified from the PS1 version. Not sure if it was a bug or intentional but a lot of reviewers talk about it. I still haven't beaten TLR. That damn fire puzzle is always annoying to me and I always ended up skipping the level once I got to it. I think I solved it once or twice only to lose my save.
@@shadowpeople89 TLR is really hard because of the amount of booby traps, invincible skeleton enemies, not to mention the fire bats that light Lara up like a torch if she touches them and the backtracking through sections of levels on top of insanely hard puzzles. i believe there are somewhere around 50 levels in the game as well. the final boss is pretty damn tough as well. that's why i think its the hardest out of the original games.
Before you play Angel of Darkness, make sure you download PC patches, it fixes the game and makes it so much more playable , but start with the original.
The best TR games are he original Core Design ones, without a doubt. You can play them on PC, download some stuff to get the original music back, and hook up a controller using joytokey. It looks far better than it does on PS1. The controls are easy once you get the hang of it and it makes the platforming SO satisfying and how precise you have to be is very much a design choice; it's not a fast paced game. It's slow and INCREDIBlY immersive (thanks to the lack of music). Just make sure to play the tutorial or you won't know how to use the running jump and you'll play the entire game thinking tou have to estimate the jump when you don't (seen far too many people fall into this trap lol). The reboot trilogy can't really even be called Tomb Raider. It's a completely different genre with a completely different protagonist. Legend era is okay but it had nothing on Core Design. Anniversary is absolutely awful though. It got rid of everything that was good about the old games. I've never played any games as immersive as the Core Design TR games. Don't miss out just because the controls are tricky to begin with and the graphics are... extremely dated.
The Tomb Raider “prequel” series has altered the franchise beyond recognition and to the point where it’s actually offensive. Imagine giving Indiana Jones an original story where he wears a back cap and has a fishing rod as his signature look/item. Because that’s basically what they’ve done with the reboot. They’re completely uninspired and have undeniably helped the general public forget how iconic Lara is actually is as a character and how unforgettable the series can be. The original games on the PS1 were amazing, even by today’s standards they can deliver genuinely immersive gameplay and fantastical worlds. Apparently SE are heading back in that direction somewhat, so we’ll have to wait and see if they can deliver an experience actually worthy of the Tomb Raider name.
I was triggered throughout the whole original review. Lara moves too much he says... that's why you have a walk button. And my God, just walk up to the wall and press the action button and she'll fault up if it's low enough. You don't have to jusp and then grab on when it's just a vertical wall. Lara controls amazingly, especially for a game that old. Just get used to the controls 🤣
Ur supposed to use the walk button in the first tomb raider game as part of the controls and platforming so she doesn’t just fall off ledges. You can’t just always tap the forward button. You’ll fall off ledges all the time.
Completely disagree with you with the original game. Being precise with the platforming is what made the game and the follow-ups really enjoyable. It's really not fair, for a game with almost 25 years, to be criticized with "didn't age well". Tbf, every old game can be hard to get into if you don't have an open mind. Actually, the very subtle soundtrack made raiding tombs must scarier, especially if you play up until TR The Last Revelation. As for Anniversary, really surprised that someone would say it's their favorite! I absolutely loved the game, unfortunately, it was the one who sold the least, and fans generally don't like the RAU era. as for the reboot, fuck feminism nowadays. I agree with you, the reboot character that was presented to us is not Lara Croft. I'm in this franchise ever since I remember, I grew up with TR wishing to be that badass good looking woman that Lara was. Don't get me wrong, the reboot was a good game, but its character was not. Hope for a better future for Lara Croft
It’s so hard for me to listen to people that barely play the classic tomb raiders talk about how “poor” the gameplay and controls are. The controls in those games are so engaging, so responsive, and very rewarding to master. Surprise surprise, they’re hard games, and you have to get good at them.
Legit, like the thing he said about pressing forward would make you over step? Like did we not listen to the tutorial about the walk button that will literally stop Lara from going over the edge?
The best game to start with is Tomb Raider 1996. Not only is it the first game that introduced us to the series, but, even if you don't appreciate the dated gameplay, you get a proper sense of how the controls of each game has evolved. Also, Tomb Raider Anniversary isn't the first game in the second series, Tomb Raider Legend is
I agree with this. I loved TR back in the PS1 era but cannot imagine ever going back there. The prequel was a good game in itself but didn't feel much like a TR game at all just throwing everything in that was popular at the time, with a healthy dosis of Uncharted and zero fun. Now the Underworld trilogy is TR at its best imo. I love all three games, Legends especially. It was the perfect way to modernise Lara but still keep what made her unique.
Underworld is my favorite TR game and I also love Anniversary. Legend is good, but way too short. I disliked Tomb Raider 2013 a lot, it's one of my least favorite, but I played the 3 games and I absolutely ADORED Shadow of the Tomb Raider. To me it felt like a TR game, not like the first one of the prequel. There are exciting tombs and the environment is superb. It's my second favorite TR game. I'm glad I played them all! But not sure I would play Tomb Raider 2013 again. Rise of the Tomb Raider, maybe, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, I absolutely will, but in a long time, because it was long, hard, and there were a lot of stuff to collect.
I'm a big fan of the reboot series from 2013. Ironically, I actually started with Shadow of the Tomb Raider and then made my way back to Tomb Raider 2013.
Tomb Raider has always been my all time favorite gaming franchise. I grew up loving the franchise when I was only 7. The controls of the original games may not have aged well, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying them.
I just love this franchise. Grew up on it a bit. 3 is my favorite. I have not played every game though but I am on Underworld and yes 3 is my favorite and I love the PS1 Tomb Raiders in general.
Part of the reason why we started it, Jianichie! :) Retro Review is all about looking at classic games through a modern critical lens. Thank you so much for your support!
So did I! I think it’s unfair how much he made out the new direction to be bad. Basically, he wanted bigger boobs and a Mary Sue baddie from the getgo.
The original 90s trilogy is still my first choice and the anniversary remake is better but the new 2013 reboot is not tomb raider she has no charm no double pistols to much drama and hardly any tombs
As someone that play most Tomb Raider games since day 1 on PS1 I thinks your right. The new trilogy change her just to make gaming media happy but it wasn't for the fans of the originals. I still like the new games but they're not Tomb Raider games in my mind.
To defend TR1: 1. The PC version has a bug where the music doesnt play. It has some great music tracks. There is a patch to fix it. 2. I think modern players are just too used to the character to be automatized. In the original the character only does what the player wants to. I love it. I think games should go back to it. Of course, modernized and without tank controls, but the player should be IN CONTROL instead of just watching.
" someone who had never played a Tomb Raider game " while talking about THE FIRST TOMB RAIDER GAME no-one had played a Tomb Raider game before AS IT WAS THE FIRST
The 2013 worked better for me as the one to start with. I got the Tomb Raider bundle back in 2013, and while I started with the first game, I installed (2013) liked the intro, and finished that before I completed (1996). The intro to the character worked for me, and I preferred the AAA treatment (given that I hadn't played Uncharted, and the only other M rated game I've played was COD black ops) Anniversary just didn't click for me, I didn't relate to the character, I didn't like the unlimited ammo, and the platforming didn't feel like a natural generation.
Either this guy is very young, or he really did not live in Lara's time, he is criticizing the original Tomb Raider as if the game came out at this time, we are talking about a game from 1996, it is OBVIOUS that he has aged and has uncomfortable controls to the Like ALL games from that era, the Tomb Raider Original is and will remain a legend, and I remind you that it won Game of the Year at that time.
WOW 😂😂 Totally ignores all the HYPER - sexualization in all the previous games yet criticizes the least sexualized version for not being like the nice archaic one. You didnt even say what particular things stood out about the anniversary edition compared to other games around its time. Just praised some features and ragged on the prequel for being uncharted and too traumatizing. Then you make an (intentional) unintentional innuendo at the end? I guess she isnt sexualized enough, huh? Or the segment with the PC talking wasnt enough
One doesn't really have anything to do with the other. It's great she's less sexualised in the prequel but that alone is not enough. The remake is a remake it doesn't need to reinvent the wheel.
@@silentsaturn7604 yeah but for many that hyper sexualization is a major drawback and to not even mention that when critiquing the flaws of the prequel versus the previous games lowers the credibility of his criticism, I can't take them seriously
The controls are completely on you if you fuck up, That is the nice thing about the classics. Sadly the reboots have magnetic hands and camera angles that are sometimes unavoidable which cause the gameplay for the reboot games to be not smooth at all. While classic games camera angles you don’t want to happen you simply take out Lara’s guns and shoot, and if you miss a jump it was entirely the players fault. The classic gameplay is far better for a more smooth experience vs the reboot which really it’s rng based weather she will grabs stuff or not 😂. Honestly you just weren’t good at the game.
The reboot series is better and rise of the tombraider is the best game it's more realistic and it has no dinosaurs I always found that weird back in the 90s tbh and the remakes ok but I love rise it's so perfect it's the tombraider game I have always wanted I was very disappointed with the originals even the 4th installment on dreamcast and it all aged bad but rise is still going strong to this day that it ages good and since bc is a thing on xbox series x and ps5 rise will continue to go strong
That's because it was set 12 years afterwards... the prequel Lara was around 18 whereas the "first" Lara was around 30. Imagine being 18 and having to shoot someone to death. Of course you'd bloody cry. The only reason TR1 Lara didn't cry (apart from the obvious console limitations), is because she had killed many people and animals in her time raiding tombs over many years.
Also just to add, if your spending way to much time peforming “basic tasks” that’s completely on you as you don’t understand the mechanics of the games. If you understand the mechanics of the game lara moves gracefully and can make the game fun and very engaging as you the player are timing and making sure your positioned correctly to make these jumps or position lara to jump onto an item so she will auto pick up the moment you land.
The Prequel is a good game, but it's plot holes ruin the story for me. At the beginning of the game, she gets impaled - and to be honest, I don't think any human being would avoid suffering from internal bleeding here. Sure, there's a suspension of disbelief, but the game also asks you to believe in supernatural things too and both don't quite mix. The worst offender though is when she's trying to save the pilot and she is ambushed. A cutscene ensues, a lot of people die, and the leader says "Kill her!". One transition later, you find yourself alive, being hung up from the ceiling with everyone else dead around you - and at this moment I knew my enemy was completely incompetent and/or Lara was a Mary Sue. That killed the story for me entirely. The weather on the island is also pretty harsh - some of the areas are very windy and extremely cold - especially when she was climbing the radio tower. Not once did she take a jacket from any of the numerous enemies she killed to avoid hypothermia. I can excuse really old games from stuff like this, but this is something that should have been addressed considering the amount of detail they were putting elsewhere. If you're going to make a survival game, at least bother to maintain some survival logic please. I also agree that the prequel was unnecessarily brutal towards Lara. They went too far there. Not only is it something I don't want to see over and over, which the game forces upon you as you play, any specific torture scene would almost certainly have killed any human or at least put them out of commission without medical attention and rest. Yet the devs just keep making her survive and the torture is on repeat. It's completely unnecessary to demonstrating that she is strong or heroic - they could have done 1/4 of what they did to accomplish that plot point. I think from a stylistic point of view, as well as the focus on gameplay, I think Legends and Anniversary were on the right track. Let the Social Justice Warriors complain - who cares about them.
I like Tifa more bcuz of her character personality..she is such a caring and loving character who literally thinks about everyone's well being. Most character doesn't have that trait.
As someone who played 1-3 upon original release, mid-era and the recent additions, I completely agree with your review and choices. Anniversary and Underworld is true way to experience TR IN 2022
You don't need to jump and then grab onto ledges in the original Tomb Raider. You can just press X and the up button at the same time. On the other hand, being hard to control is part of the charm of this game and why it got so generic after they ditched it
I have favorites in all 3 eras : Tomb Raider Underworld, Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Tomb Raider 3, with an honorable mention to Tomb Raider Anniversary. I disliked Tomb Raider 2013. It wasn't Tomb Raider, there were no tombs (what they had didn't count as tombs), a boring environment and I was a fan of hunting with a bow, or the exp and skills. I played Rise of the Tomb Raider and liked it more, but it's when I played Shadow of the Tomb Raider that I remembered why I love that franchise so much. There was exciting tombs and the environement was superb. I started playing TR2, then TR1 and TR3 when I was 12. I never finished them back then. Years later, I bought Legend, than Underworld, and since then I've played every game, except the first one, that doesn't interest me. But yeah, if someone who has never played TR asked me where to start, I would suggest Anniversary.
i actually just got most of the Tomb Raider games as well, i am only missing the first 3 from the 90's and Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light which i plan to buy when it is on sale next
Well the fact the he really made it seem like making a game better made it worse is wild to the new tomb raider a are amazing I beat the first two I need beat the third but amazing games
Honestly just play the 2013 reboot trilogy on PS4 since it has the best combat as well as the best graphics and controls plus I like the more realistic Lara Croft.
Personally the best start of the series is Legends. If you got a ps3 they got the trilogy of legends, anniversary and underworld. Honestly I got into it recently and it's alot of fun. And you see what people most compare too with the newer ones in recent years. Puzzles and action and funny dialog is stuff you'll find
It's a prequel, an origin story where she basically came from zero to hero, so of course you shouldn't expect her to be the badass she was in the older tomb raider games. This review is so unfair
I, am Glad that each of US., have our Own Likes & Dislikes, as I would NEVER Base whether I would PLAY a Game .. on Someone else's Opinion and/or Judgement. Don't Make a Decision on which Game You PLAY Because of Reviews by Others, TRY & Judge for yourself. Remember., What Someone else Likes or Dislikes, You may think Differently. Happy Gaming!
i was a bit too young for OG Lara and by the time the first Reboot (legends) hit the shelf i was already a pc gamer (old TotalWar Fx and some fps..) I knew basically very little of TombRaider apart from Tomb, pistols boobs and dinosaurs??? So i started with the 2013 reboot originstory/prequels/whatever. And I liked all three TR, Rise & Shadow.. i like that they tried to create a flawed growing protagonist, they could have done a better job with the story and continuity across the trilogy, the mechanics and the games relied way more on 3rd person cover shooters pew pew.. but they are still great (and apparently the reboot trilogy sold HALF of the 90 total milion copies of the franchise.. unfortunately were also some of the MOST EXPENSIVE games ever made.. Focusing too much on iperrealistic graphics is a drag. I am completing the LEGEND trilogy and i wanna one day play the OG timeline.. need to find a way to make them work xD xD
Here are my thoughts: The original is beautiful for the time it's from, but it's controls kill the fun The Remake took everything good about the OG and made them even better. Now the prequel... I still haven't played any, but my main reason is the entire like you said, "triple A" treatment it got. I really miss the OG Lara Croft, and despite the noticeable sex appeal of her design, it played into her character. The fact she was this aluring, yet sophisticated badass made her all the more memorable. With the prequel, however, she's been made into your typical "tough waman who don't need no man" through basically torture porn. Kinda gives me flashbacks about about the old Devil May Cry/DMC thing Maybe it's just because I haven't played the prequels, but from what I've seen, the lack of charm, colorfulness, wonderment and most importantly, personality, kill the experience for me. Great video analysis though
I still keep my copies of PS1 Tomb Raider 1 and 2 nice but Tomb Raider Anniversary is where it's at. I really like the new trilogy too but to capture that original 90s feeling without realizing nostalgia hurts Anniversary is the way to go.
I love the anniversary remake, but I also LOVE the 2013 reboot! It shows us a more human and inexperienced, less sexualized Lara Croft. It's very interesting to see the events that led her to become the heroin we all grew up to love and adore. And her self development throughout the entire game... man, that was BEAUTIFUL
You just got it wrong about the prequel: it is an improvement over the uncharted games, if anything. But I agree about anniversary, it's just an amazing remake.
Thanks for review! Tomb Raider is the best for me. Personally I started with anniversary and it's still perfect! Nice game, awesome graphics but in other parts the story is not so interesting I think.
It's so ridiculous to me that Lara Croft is controversial because she's attractive to young teenage boys. There's absolutely no harm there at all, and it's playing on natural biological predisposition. She's not a damsel in distress, but a female protagonist who doesn't rely on a man. Unrealistic, yes, but isn't that what people want? But what is truly more enraging is the sex-positive, sex-work is real work, you-go-girl doublespeak that comes out of the same mouths. We criticize sexy game characters made for majority-male markets, but encourage 18 year old women to create adult content or even sell their bodies because it's somehow empowering and not objectification? In the first scenario it's just fantasy. In the second there's a treacherous relationship between men/women that I think harms both.
I… I started with the 2013 game :( As someone who didn’t play the firsts. I like her, I ACTUALLY saw her as a Katniss Everdeen duplicate. I hate that we went ALLLLL through this video for you to get to this to be like “argh they wanted feminism I hate this”
Well if you want to play a Tomb Raider game then you should play with the real Tomb Raider games, instead of the prequels. Which doesn't really have Lara Croft.
How old are you? I remember when I played the first tomb raider, when you activate a mechanism, a little cinematic shows you what happen, in the meanwhile you can control Lara and you know in which direction move or jump these was amazing and fun (the controls to move Lara was perfect if you know how to play right), and how is that, that you shoot to the air? , that's a big lie, Tomb Raider was the first game that aims automatically to the enemies, yes, before Ocarina of Time, definitely if you ever played a PS1 game and you don't like the controls like Resident Evil 1,2,3, Silent Hill, play Tomb Raider series from Ps2 games,(except Angel of Darkness) if you are a good gamer play it from the first Tomb Raider in Ps1.
Jesus died for you was buried and rose again on the third day according to the scriptures. If you confess with your mouth Jesus is lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. please repent of your sins and accept Jesus Christ as your lord and savior.
If you haven't ever played a tomb raider game and want an experience similar to the original with good accessibility, play the remake of the first one aka tomb raider anniversary 2007.
Otherwise play the 2013 reboot.
They will play the realistic graphics first I guess.

Tomb Raider: Anniversary is so underrated as a remake, it’s one of the best, and deserves more recognition.

This is a really good trilogy and many in the TR fandom love and prefer it :)

The reboot story is a whole different story then anything we’ve seen before.
It wasn’t a prequel, crystal sadly did poor marketing but there are three different tomb raider timelines and three different origins for Lara.
"Similar to that of a snuff film." Haven't played many horror games have you?
That’s the point. This is not a horror game
It wasn’t even a horror game. Just had horror survival aspects.
The Anniversary - Legend - Underworld - Trilogy is my favourite. 😁
What you guys said 100%. Maybe he should have spent more time in laras house practicing in the gym.
I mean the controls were great for the time but are definitely dated now. But you're right that the remake acted like the difficulty wasn't supposed to be there. The difficulty and puzzles was the whole entire reason I enjoyed the originals.
I still remember playing the original tomb raider series. the floating island from tomb raider 2 still haunts me
Na kr 😶
Tomb Raider 2013 had to go through some major changes that's some fans just got to get over with. Some of the fans got tired of the same past formula. But it changes was for a good. I think the developers did a good job.
The Tomb Raider prequel was my favourite one... Your criticism was kinda focused on the fact that it was just too similar to other 3rd person games. Not sure why that is a bad thing. The remake was ok, but still felt dated in a lot of ways.
I think it's bad cause it looses its identity.
Tomb Raider Legend was my favorite.
It's pretty easy and a good place to start for people new to the franchise, imo.
The Last Revelation will always be my favorite. Can't beat the Egypt setting. Its also the hardest game in the franchise.
The platforming went to hell after that too...
Gurl please. Simmer tf down. I love new Lara.
Clearly someone who doesn't know how to control lara if he was having to push jump when climbing or falling off edges instead of using the walk button
Thank God someone realised. This whole video triggered me so much.
Haha exactly
The best tomb raider is the 2. Atmosphere was just spot on in every. Single. Shot
I didn't like 2.
I'm just assuming he didn't started playing games until gamecube/ps2 era.
The remake is the best one to start with
Yup
I started with Rise Of Tomb Raider and I loved it! I'm gonna play Shadow of The Tomb Raider and Tomb Raider the 2013 Reboot.
I started with the second game and rise is my favorite
I started with shadow then went to 2013 and then rise and I love all 3
Tomb Raider has always been my all time favorite gaming franchise.
My favorites are the second one and then the third one of the series. 😄
@@f0rfeited I love the second as well. Awesome.

I hope this series continues. It's nice to look back on what was as we go forward into what will be.

@@spectrebull Of course! Keep up the good work, Ty. 🤜🤛
Really enjoyed Shadow and Rise. Hoping for some great remakes.
I played the original and II back in the day. This summer I played Legend, Anniversary and Underworld. I'm going for TB2013, Rise and Shadow next.
As someone that play most Tomb Raider games since day 1 on PS1 I thinks your right. The new trilogy change her just to make gaming media happy but it wasn't for the fans of the originals. I still like the new games but they're not Tomb Raider games in my mind.
You're absolutly right. The originals games are the best and often really hard to play without walkrhrough.
The original tomb raider series was like soulborne games that only badass gamers would like to play. I like the original series 1to6.
To defend TR1:

The intro to the character worked for me, and I preferred the AAA treatment (given that I hadn't played Uncharted, and the only other M rated game I've played was COD black ops)
Anniversary just didn't click for me, I didn't relate to the character, I didn't like the unlimited ammo, and the platforming didn't feel like a natural generation.
TR1 had unlimited ammo...
the first tomb raider installment I played was Shadow of Tomb Raider which is the best experience accompanied by eerie background music
Rise of the Tomb Raider is the best of any of the TR games. A Masterpiece!
Ikr? I love that one!
Please never watch anime. You puritans want everything to be politically correct.
@@Peecamarke completely agree to you
The original Tomb Raider is really impressive when you realize it came out 2 years before Ocarina of Time.
According to me anniversary is the best
The reboot series is better and rise of the tombraider is the best game it's more realistic and it has no dinosaurs I always found that weird back in the 90s tbh and the remakes ok but I love rise it's so perfect it's the tombraider game I have always wanted I was very disappointed with the originals even the 4th installment on dreamcast and it all aged bad but rise is still going strong to this day that it ages good and since bc is a thing on xbox series x and ps5 rise will continue to go strong
wrong on all accounts regarding the original
If you ask me what game is good for someone who never played tomb raider i would say Legend it's really easy and fun.
Where is 2015 and 2018 versions
The first Lara croft wasn't weak and didn't cry and she was tough
That's because it was set 12 years afterwards... the prequel Lara was around 18 whereas the "first" Lara was around 30. Imagine being 18 and having to shoot someone to death. Of course you'd bloody cry. The only reason TR1 Lara didn't cry (apart from the obvious console limitations), is because she had killed many people and animals in her time raiding tombs over many years.
I could never finish a tomb raider game
I started with Rise of Tomb Raider
Another solid analysis. You're so right about the 'AAAness' of the reboot.
0:20 "Two.. big.. problems" Lara and Tifa ? 😉
I like Tifa more bcuz of her character personality..she is such a caring and loving character who literally thinks about everyone's well being. Most character doesn't have that trait.
@@sindevil1142 Can't agree more :)
This is what I grew up playing it was great bro!!!!
On the other hand, being hard to control is part of the charm of this game and why it got so generic after they ditched it
I totally agree with you in every aspect
I somehow always disagree with TYLER
I don't blame you
i actually just got most of the Tomb Raider games as well, i am only missing the first 3 from the 90's and Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light which i plan to buy when it is on sale next
Happy Gaming!
i was a bit too young for OG Lara and by the time the first Reboot (legends) hit the shelf i was already a pc gamer (old TotalWar Fx and some fps..)
I knew basically very little of TombRaider apart from Tomb, pistols boobs and dinosaurs???
Tomb raider 2 was my favourite of that generation. Number 3 was also great. Of course if you look at 2013, that's 20 years of technology later
Here are my thoughts:
The original is beautiful for the time it's from, but it's controls kill the fun
The Remake took everything good about the OG and made them even better.
Kinda gives me flashbacks about about the old Devil May Cry/DMC thing
Maybe it's just because I haven't played the prequels, but from what I've seen, the lack of charm, colorfulness, wonderment and most importantly, personality, kill the experience for me.
Great video analysis though
Shadow of the Tomb Raider is where it ends so does the 1996 Tomb Raider start from there?? Plz explain this 🙏🙏
I still keep my copies of PS1 Tomb Raider 1 and 2 nice but Tomb Raider Anniversary is where it's at.
Nah boobies and fan service ftw.
You just got it wrong about the prequel: it is an improvement over the uncharted games, if anything. But I agree about anniversary, it's just an amazing remake.
Tomb Raider ANGEL OF DARKNESS is #1
Excellent review of the franchise

Tomb Raider is the best for me. Personally I started with anniversary and it's still perfect!

What is the best Tomb Raider for Xbox one?
Rise of tomb raider, Shadow of the tomb raider or the Tomb Raider 2013 reboot

The winner is
Lara craft
This is an accurate video. Period.
I… I started with the 2013 game :( As someone who didn’t play the firsts. I like her, I ACTUALLY saw her as a Katniss Everdeen duplicate.

Hey, WatchMojo. Can you please do a Retro Review video on Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas?
Start with original 1st game, skip Chronicles and Angel of Darkness, finish with 1st reboot game (2013). That's it, full circle.
