My absolute favorite version of this song 💚 I love the change in tempo from a jig to a reel. So much fun to sing, listen and dance too. It makes my little Irish heart happy 🥰

Near Banbridge town, in the County Down
    One evening last July
Down a bóithrín green came a sweet cailín
And she smiled as she passed me by.
She looked so neat in her two bare feet
To the sheen of her nut-brown hair
Such a coaxing elf, I'd to shake myself
To make sure I was standing there.
From Bantry Bay down to Derry Quay
    From Galway to Dublin town
No maid I've seen like the fair cailín
That I met in the County Down.
As she onward sped I shook my head
And I gazed with a feeling queer
And I said, says I, to a passerby
"Who's your one with the nut-brown hair?"
He smiled at me, and with pride says he,
"She's the gem of old Ireland's crown.
Young Rosie McCann from the banks of the Bann
And the star of the County Down."
From Bantry Bay down to Derry Quay
    From Galway to Dublin town
No maid I've seen like the fair cailín
That I met in the County Down.
She'd a soft brown eye and
a look so sly and a smile like the rose in June
And you held each note from her auburn throat,
    as she lilted lamenting tunes
At the pattern dance you'd be in trance
as she skipped through a jig or reel
When her eyes she'd roll, as she'd lift soul
And your heart she would likely steal
From Bantry Bay down to Derry Quay
    From Galway to Dublin town
No maid I've seen like the fair cailín
That I met in the County Down.
At the harvest fair she'll be surely there
and I'll dress my Sunday clothes
With my hat cocked right and my shoes shon bright
for a smile from the nut-brown Rose
No horse I'll yoke, or pipe I smoke,
'til the rust in my plough turn brown
And a smiling bride by my own fireside
sits the star of the County Down
From Bantry Bay down to Derry Quay
    From Galway to Dublin town
No maid I've seen like the fair cailín
That I met in the County Down.
She'd a soft brown eye and

***** If I'm lucky I'll be staying in Ireland next year for the month of January, for a school trip! I tried for it this year but didn't get it. It sounds like a fantastic time over there though. And actually just for the hell of it I've been learning Irish/Gaelic (or I suppose, Gaelige) lately. I don't know much yet lol. However I believe if you were going to reenact a certain scene from Lord of the Rings, you could tear off a helmet (or a hat) and dramatically cry "Ní fear mé!" ;)

Well, it just stays with the fast tempo of the chorus throughout the entire song. But this is only how they do live, their recorded version is like the one you know and love.
I like this way better for live situations, because it really makes you want to dance and have a good time.

    • @andrewp8284
      @andrewp8284 10 лет назад +1

Charlie Gallagher I do like the album version as well for that reason (the dynamics), however I love this version as well; I like Celtic rock and this is, at least from what I've heard, the closest thing to being like a rock version of the song lol; but I have no joke like 7 versions of this song from slow, beautiful, and in the 3rd person to roarin' fast and foot slammin' (this one). lol

    • @BranMuzsick
      @BranMuzsick 10 лет назад +1

Charlie Gallagher your right, Charlie. They were alot slower on the album, but their tempos actually vary more in this version over the other. the album could be set to a click track, while the live version would be nearly impossible to.

Am I the only one who's a wee bit more partial to the CD version (but likes this version)?

I'm partial to the CD version-it just seems to have a little more...I dunno, sincerity in the lyrics, besides just saying them fast.I also liked the more distinguishable musical formatting (piano vs forte parts, etc). I do like the energy in the live version here though! It's good to have both this and the CD version available! :)

@spamman12123 I felt the same way when i first heard them, sadly the first irish song i heard wasn't from the high kings, it was the orthodox celts version of this same song (they suck though) The first song i heard by this band was rocky road to dublin (which i know start to finish) I trully hope that they continue to bring happiness to all who listen to them
