sorry to upset the apple cart but the Wild Rover is a 17th century English Song! "The Wild Rover', a song widely known amongst the general public and commonly believed to be Irish, has its origin in a seventeenth-century English broadside written by Thomas Lanfiere, one of a class of moralizing 'alehouse ballads' of the period.

I'm sitting here on lockdown for this f'n Corona Virus. I am separated from my family and must spend this time alone. Because St. Patrick's Day was cancelled this year of 2020 I was listening to this music to cheer me up. Is there anything in this world more cheerful than Irish music ? It breaks your heart and makes you glad to be alive at the same time. I'm proud to be an Irish American.

A real rush of memories....when I was a young lad (14) in southern Ontario (lates'60's), we raised money for our pipe band by hosting a number of Irish bands in a series of concerts. I can still remember sitting around our dining room table with Tommy Makem and the Clancy brothers drinking and singing this very song. I even played the tin whistle while the guys drummed on the table and sang. Over 50 years ago now, but the memories are so clear and vivid that it could have been yesterday. Sláinte Mhaith.

My friend met an Irish lass in the 80's. He brought her over from Dublin to the Rhondda Valleys where she was introduced to the locals in The Royal Oak.
We sang, as we did back then, and she sang too, cockles and mussels was one that we loved and she also sang this....
She had such a beautiful voice she she silenced the room. We were enthralled and we were happy - and when we sang the chorus with her we took the roof off. Oh the memories are as fresh now as they were then.
This song will always remind me of that lovely girl and whenever I hear it I wonder what she is doing now. And whether she remembers her visit to the Rhondda.

    I've been a wild rover for many's a year
And I've spent all me money on whiskey and beer
And now I'm returning with gold in great store
And I never will play the wild rover no more
    Chorus
    And it's no nay never
    No nay never no more
Will I play the wild rover
    No never no more
I went to an alehouse I used to frequent
And I told the landlady me money was spent
I asked her for credit. She answered me, Nay
Such a custom like yours I culd have any day
    Chorus
Then out of my pockets I took sovereigns bright
And the landlady's eyes opened wide with delight
She says I have whiskeys and wines of the best
And the words that I said were only in jest
    Chorus
I go home to my parents, confess what I've done
And I ask them to pardon their prodigal son
And if they caress me as oft times before
I never will play the wild rover no more
    Chorus

Sung this song with The Young Clancy's, never heard of them, most never have, realatives in St. Louis working the big pan, next Rich Lavin, best fiddler and teacher of pipes. Working on a plaster crew Saturday afternoon, talking about playing for O'Connels pub. Every Sat And Sunday night we would parade the square with pipe and drums and bring the crowd to Jack's place.

It's a shame the average age in the hall is about 65 (no offence to seniors!) But I wish more young people would listen to this kind of music. Imagine how much better the world would be.

There were some young folks in the audience. The first night especially (Footage is mixed from both nights) and a ton of young people and even some kids. The second night did have more older people, but the second night also had some young folks.
