NIKE AIR ZOOM ALPHAFLY NEXT% 2 INITIAL REVIEW - EDDBUD
An initial review of the recently released NIKE AIR ZOOM ALPHAFLY NEXT% 2 PROTO!
I shoe i have purchased this one with my own cash. No freebies here. As always honest opinions based on experience in the shoe.
The V1 was a shoe that i enjoyed though always felt was a long distance half or marathon beast than a short range blaster. The v2 is heavier than the v1 but does have the additional advantages of more midsole stack and a new outsole.
My initial review tested speeds anywhere from 8:20/mi to about 6:40/mi. It is wider and more stable shoe from the V1, loads of grip and perhaps now a shoe you can say is very much a marathon race shoe than a 5k/10k option. The Nike ZoomX Vaporfly Next% is still the king for versatility.

"Soft as a squirrel after a light wash in the bird bath" - Edd "greatest of all time" Bud🏃♂️💯🔥
Many a squirrel round these parts.
As far as I know from an engineering standpoint, the heel flare makes sense in a way because it makes the the compression of the foam structurally different. Imagine poking the center of a small foam cube vs poking a mattres of foam. Even though the foam and the area of impact are the exact same, the actual firmness/ softness in that spot is different. The more foam there is around (not just under) the area of impact, the less it can extend in the given direction. :) That’s why the foam of the Invincible is extending the actual shoe so much, same goes for Alphafly! It‘s a subtle way of fine tuning the foam :) One may think you’re not engaging with that part of the shoe, which is true, but at the same time it’s needed for the part that you’re actually engaging with! Hope that makes sense, cheers from Berlin!
Interesting that adidas choose not have it and curve the bottom heel section more underfoot. I appreciate your breakdown though, it does make some sense from this perspective.
“Soft as a squirrel after a light wash in a birdbath”. Well done episode EDD! Love your content!
It seemed like the only way to describe it.
The Nike behemoth has returned. Eye watering price but it seems like the subtle tweaks are all in favour of more efficiency. Once again at a loss of some versatility.
Looking forward to the comparisons and the full 100 mile review. 👌😎🏃♂️
This review is peak Eddbud! I always appreciate your perspective, Edd, (even when you praise Adidas).
I was “on form” today. 🤣
Just ran a 6' PR and 25' BQ in the Ekiden AF V1, I'll definitely be picking up V2. Take my money Nike!!!!!! My MetaSpeed Sky + came in while I was away at my marathon WOW-- I'll have to get a good smell in tonight after work.
Best smelling shoe of 2022. Easy
You're the real MVP! I was searching for an honest review around the arch. I should not be surprised that we can only have counted on you. Thanks a lot!
It’s the same. Seriously, the insole just hides it a little. 👍🏼
Alphafly is my favourite race shoe by far from 5k up. That’s even after trying the Vapourly etc. I will be trying these eventually for sure. Just started on a new pair of the 1’s so there should be plenty of stock when I want some. The Tempo next percent you mentioned are just too noisy and severe for me to use much at all.
The tempo next% is the “heavy metal” shoe for sure!
"Beast put it together on a Friday afternoon"! 😂
Thanks for the thorough review!!
It’s the closest I could come to the truth. 🐈⬛👍🏼
I just got my new AN%2 Orange with a pretty good deal from Keller Sports in Germany for €243 (10% off as premium customer + 12% off with the SUMMERSALE code). Looking forward to run a couple of long runs to break them in for the Berlin Marathon in three weeks. If they don´t feel perfect I will use the tested AN% EKIDEN. Great review as usual. Cheers
I ended up wearing my AN% EKIDEN and it was the best decision! They performed without any issues. I finished my first marathon with 3:20:58. AC40: 881. What an event te be able to take part in. A historic race with a new world record from the goat! An experience to be always remembered and cherished!
Nice review Edd..I just ordered my 4th pr of V1..no idea when V2 is available here..V1 is as versatile as any shoe I use and is also more durable than many of the daily trainers I've used over the years..I will be interested to see how they work for you in races..
Glad you got a pair Edd, you’ll actually use them, unlike a certain ebay seller somehow managed to score 10+ pairs and are now selling for double the price!
Mine have a nice earthy patina already! 👍🏼😊
dang, that "horn" at the back gives me anxiety, as the pegasus turbo was known for that ripping off...
Yes I can’t for the life of me understand why they need it.
Brilliant as usual @EDDBUD - many valid points - and yes, the shoe smell or lack thereof, would be a downer!
That Nick Drake album is an oldie but a goodie.
Classic Nick Drake. Subtle and mysterious. Unlike this shoe. 🤣
@@EDDBUD : - )
Many thanks for the film as always Ed though when i saw the thumbnail I thought you were reviewing a steam iron...
It’s got the shape!
I saw the post on IG and I was so excited!
Plaaaaaay!
Alphafly 2 marginal gains for exceptional increase. I've done a few HM amongst some elite runners(avg HM 1.16, I'm the lower end, shallow gene pool of the elites) they all rock Vapourfly or other ( even a brooks hyperion.. race flat, no plate). Alphafly is a great shoe but mere mortals do not(in my humble opinion) need to spend 275 on this shoe
In a weak and a bit drunk moment saturday night I ordered a pair of Alpha 1s on discount again. Loved them the last time but ended up returning them because of the price. Regreted it since so maybe I'll try quietly keep these and try keep the missus cool 😄 Alpha 2s when I eventually wear them out 😄
I'm very intrigued by these shoes but... They're so expensive and so extreme that I'm afraid to take the risk. I'd rather go for Vaporfly's. Less extreme and just a bit less expensive. Or even better, the Sky+.
My biggest concern is the zoomx underneath the airpods. From my experiance with zoomx, it will ultimately collapse or separate where it's at it's thinnest. For now I bought 4 alphafly 1's at discount so..I'll wait and see how durable these turn out to be.
Never had this issue with any zoomx shoes. Though the foam doesn’t like water much!
Hi EDDBUD! I'm a fan watching your videos in Korea. This is my first comment, but I've been watching all your videos from last two months before going to bed.
By the way, I have a question, I've seen the graph you put in your video to say that Alphafly is a pretty good price for it's durability.
Can you give me a link that or video using that?
Many thanks for watching in Korea! 👍🏼
Alphafly is good for durability on road running. The price is good now with some discounts. 👍🏼
I think you' re probably best off getting the v1 for a discount. That' s the general idea I' ve been getting from the reviews of v2 so far I would say.
liked. subscribed. ready for the morsels! god bless you Edd and happy foam squashing!
Thanks for tuning in Dan!
Ayayay ...Bad news about the arch !!! Really bad news !!!
Thank you for your info though.
As ive got the V1 im gonna give this a miss, think ive only ever used that a handful of times aswell. Just picked up another pair of the king of shoes Vaporfly NEXT% 2 for £150 from Nike!
Nikes shoes seem to be cheaper here in the Philippines. The alphafly 2 already appeared as coming soon in the Nike app and its priced at PhP14495 or $260
Nice review, but before buying ill wait for 100 mile review. Hope the value score for me will be better when you drop your 100 mile review. Patiently wait for a bargain 😁
I actually had problems with the arch in with the first 10 miles or so with the v1 and it was the first running shoe that caused a blister underneath the big toe. Anyway after a 40/50 miles they were getting better and better. 275 is simply too much.
Same arch here but disguised with a bigger insole. 😉
Certain colorways are already on sale here in the U.S. 28% off or $204.00 USD. So - 167GBP. Maybe you'd be a little more generous if you could have jumped on Nike's website over here.
Bryter layter great shout !! How about solid air by John martyn! ✊👟
Listening to it only the other day.
Great review, Edd, I've been super curious as to your take on them! But since the arch support issue is still largely the same as v1, I think I'll have to pass.
You can cure it mostly by shoving in any other running shoe insole.
@@davidh5429 Maybe so. But I just shouldn't have to do that with a $275 top tier racing shoe.
@@duanesidney9761 Nobody can develop a shoe that will fit everyone perfectly. It's still an amazing shoe
@@davidh5429 true, but the arch issue with the Alphafly is quite persistent and widely known.
It quite a thin insole. Almost PU like aka Jordan 4/5 style but thinner.
I'd love it if you Tim or Andy would do a vid on which shoe is best for the back end of a Marathon at holding pace when the running form disappears (and therefore is less affected by the loss of running form). I wonder which one penalizes you least in the last 6 miles???
I would assume these! It’s very much the marathon shoe compared to the VF next% or streakfly.
@@EDDBUD yeh was thinking a backend form saving shoeoff between Nike A/fly, V/fly, Asics MSS+ and the Adidas Pro3 and Prime X :) not much homework there! :)
@@EDDBUD as a PS.... The "bulkiness" of the shoe looked increased over V1....Do they "feel" overly intrusive on foot?
I dunno, but if running form is gone, the shoe likely is mostly irrelevant at that point. These CF shoes especially don't provide much benefit with poor form. Bigger weekly mileage is what I'd recommend. Just my 2 pence worth.
@@Elmo6855 It’s not gonna do it for you. But going to help at least reduce fatigue by that point.
Hey big cat, if you don't mind me asking, do you under-pronate ?? i also spotted some knock-knees @7:25 ..
Loved the video btw.. desperately waiting for Alpha 2 vs Vapour 2 comparison 🤘..
It’s possible though I show no signs of it on any shoe. 👍🏼
@@EDDBUD Glad mate.. keep munching those miles.
I normally get earth-credit-twitchy when these super shoe releases come along, but not fussed with this one. It doesn’t really look like a shoe. More akin to a ghostbusters boot
It has a sci fi vibe for sure Richard!
just got 2 V1's with the $205 price drop
Pretty sure the winner of this year's Thames Path 100 wore Alphafly shoes. That's all sorts of surfaces including plenty of grass
It seems to be versatile enough in the outsole for almost anything.
Hi. Really appreciate this review. I have run multiple marathon PRs with the Alphafly but struggle with comfort after miles 12-14. I feel like the front of my foot “hangs” off the sides after I get a warmed up. Do you feel the forefoot of the shoe has gotten wider? Thank you!
Same issue here but with a wider insole over the arch. Don’t let anyone tell you it’s different. 👍🏼
@@EDDBUD thank you!
Don't leave them kicking about on the floor Edd, if Beast gets her head fast in those babies you'll be calling the fire brigade.
Beast does like a good chew on a shoe
Just the way you did the v - value now part says it all!
😖
😂
What’s your opinion Edd worth buying or buy version 1 at discounted price. I love version 1 I’m not feeling the changes are worth it at full price for the average runner.
Absolutely a good deal. A touch more foam here and Star Trek looks but more pricey. 👍🏼😊
This makes me so glad I’m waiting for the adios 7. I couldn’t run in those clown shoes. Not for me.
I thought the same about the looks of these shoes before trying them. I must say I find them so comfortable and great to run with that now I don´t mind the looks at al. Never tried an Adidas super carbon plated shoe though...
Hey Edd, would you take the Adidas Adizero Adios Pro 3 over these?
Not tried the 3 yet so hard to say.
Im pretty sure the official measurements for world athletics is measured from inside the shoe to the floor instead of measuring the entire stack.
That’s how I measured it. 👍🏼
@@EDDBUD some brands don't count the insole or even de outsole (!!) in the official measurements. But 6mm are a lot and I guess the world athletics should
These days, I think of Nike like I do Tesla: absolutely world beating technology and design, but in terms of real world quality of execution, it's a bit hit and (more) miss...
It’s a great shoe. Don’t get me wrong, but it’s now like they are positioning Kipchoge as the new Jordan. 👍🏼
@@EDDBUD Funny you should say that: over here in Sydney you can walk into pretty much any sneaker store and see decent to great colorway Air Jordan 1s (Highs and Lows, not just Mids), 3, 4, 6, 11, 12 & 13s, plus a heap of 36s sitting on shelves - 2 years ago they had a shelf life of a few hours at most before they were snapped up. It will be one hell of a marketing coup if Nike now manages to get hypebeasts lusting over the latest tech shoes!
How is the toebox compared to the first version? I ask because i'm a wide-footer. Just wondering if my toes can splay better on version 2
Feels very similar to me Romeo
Where did you get it? Runnig in V1, looking forward to spending my very hard earth credits on V2. V1 is the best shoe I have ever run in. Currently running a half marathon 6 days a week on a threadmill; only possible because of V1.
A local lad had two. One in my size!
When is this coming out for general release in the USA?
No word yet
Oh boy, still a great score at the end of all of that but one big one from me is it just seems like you’re not that excited about the shoe!
Perhaps it’s that lack of versatility? 😫 it is a bit of a downer, I really like the original 😟
In fairness I just hammered out some 400 and 200 reps and it was insanely good. Felt like I walked down the road.
@@EDDBUD awesome! Thanks for making the video Ed!! Legend
My pair are defective. Very disappointed as such an expensive shoe. Insole sticthed incorrectly and a ridge under the heel in the left foot on the insole. As they are all sold out now it's very frustrating as bought them to race in.
The insoles are glued in. Do you mean the placement? They appear to cup around the heel quite a bit.
The placement is off and there is a ridge/fold in the heel area of the insole in the left shoe. Also the point you made about the injection little dots on the outsole is fairly shocking for a £275 shoe. Few bits of loose stitching. Yet to run in them as they will probably have to go back and won't get chance to try them till they come back with more stock.
@@jacknixon7475 That is very sad to hear. The mould injection points can be overlooked but underfoot imperfections will drive you wild.
Are planning to review the Under Armour Hovr Phantom 2 (intelliknit)?
Are you
I would be keen to!
Thanks
Thanks for supporting the channel Paul! 👍🏼👊
Bedankt

So, probably worth just picking up the AFv1 on a discount then and save yourself some earth credits
We needed a reaction video of your wife when you tell her the price
Imagine the Evil Dead. 👍🏼
Nice, where did you find these?
Grabbed locally. Someone had 2 in 2 different sizes.
@@EDDBUD that's what I thought, little mom and pop shop. I'm going to wait for darker colors to release, since white sneakers get dirty and damaged much more quickly l.
Perhaps zoom fly 5 would be better for 99% of people looking for a plated shoe
Very likely.
A lot of the Nike proto shoes seem to be pretty shoddily put together. Does it say 'dry clean only' on the label?
There’s a button on both shoes and when you press it the shoe plays “My adidas” by RUN DMC
@@EDDBUD 🤣
Is it already overpricing???
Yes it’s a crazy price for some foam and rubber.
If u had to pic 1 shoe for the rest of your life which would it be?
Original VF 4% flyknit.
Edd, what's your height/weight?
6 foot 3. 74kg ish I think. Maybe a little more.
@@EDDBUD woah good weight. I'm same height and I struggle to stay at 82kg. I just get too hungry after long runs and weight training.
So witch one is better alphafly v1 or alphafly v2
For me the v1 is the best. Feels by far more race like
when u measure the heel stack from the outside with a ruler you get incorrect stack measurements. the official measurement is taken from inside the shoe and will give 39/40mm
the outsole wraps around a little for stability, eg. bondi X
Where did I say I measured it that way?
I measure inside the shoe from the insole using calliper.
@@EDDBUD my bad assuming. Interesting tho, I haven’t looked in depth at the rules of how they measure it. Seems to be very much a grey area. I’m a triathlete myself and don’t use my v1s for super short stuff for fear of not getting them on haha
@@jeremymaclean3535 These are a shoe horn shoe for sure. The laces merely tighten the front of the upper. Hardly need any tension. The primex in my size is 56mm in heel stack. Just take a moment to think about that. 🤣
Do the 2s fits the same as the 1s? I ordered my alpha 1 size 9.5.
Almost exactly the same in my experience.
Gert pull tabs, take my money
Nice!
🥇
How much are they in dollars 💵
Too much. 👍🏼
I agree with your assessment some reviews are saying the pronounce arch is much better but I felt it just as much .
I also don’t know how they Measure stack hight either
My alphaflys appear to have the same or almost the same stack hight as the prime x ( I measured)
From the inside of the shoe at the stated distance from the heel it’s about 46mm in my size 11. 👍🏼
I knew you’d get them somehow 😂
😉
for that price, no thank you. I would rather save my money and buy a few pair of shoes from another company or even just supershoes... again... from another company, along with some socks or shorts also for the same price.
They are getting absurd with these prices anymore and it won't change until people stop paying for them.
Heavily discounted on the womens sizes now.

Guess wat…v1 I get a lot of discount from outlet …😀
Absolutely now is the time to grab remaining stock if it works for you

Dance schön edd. I came to Think about an interesting thing. Is it fair, that the value loss/cost per kilometer. Is higher or around the same in a pair of high end running shoes compared to a brand new Ford Fiesta or similar? I tried looking at it yesterday. Here in Denmark a pair of invincible zooms 2 is priced at 1500 Danish kroner. Which equals to 173,19 British earth credits. Given they have maybe 500 kilometers the write off is 3 Danish kroner per kilometer. Thats actually Pretty close to a car. Does that make any sense? To me most shoes are ridiculous overpriced. Another fun fact. The price here in Denmark for the invincible are the same on both v1 and 2 without discount that is. Atm they can be found for around 100 British EC. I don’t know man, they are screwing us :)
Sadly these are unusable now at 130 miles due to the clicking.
