This is like Antiques Road Show meets Top Gear, but with a lean toward the old antique show...you can tell Clarkson was the rebel on this staid production.

the car holden should have got when it came out had it not been for the toyota alliance.surely the 84-91 could have been as a stop gap measure when the nissan deal ended in 1989.

The 1.4i single point Astra F will not hit 100mph, even when they were new or
nearly new cars. I refer to the 5 door variants.
My 1.6, 77 kw Astra had a true (GPS) top seed of 201 km/h. Maybe they build them better hear in South Africa?

Maybe the South African Astras was better build. They were superb. My 77 kw 1.6 Astra was way better than my Escort in every way. Especially build finish, road holding and economy.

Right on some counts but there been many a clarkson prediction that went horribly wrong, one of these old motorfair TGs on here he predicts the new beetle will be a success followed by nobody will want a ford KA. Even his famous vectra rant didnt stop it selling.
The astra test was a bit harsh in parts
And it was totally justified! I had an Opel Astra from this generation and it was the worst car I ever had. Badly designed, badly made, unfulfilling to drive and not very competent at anything. It is the only car I regretted buying.

well,were far better looking and modern compared with other brands in the same segment or class ,i drove both the escort that i had for two years and a alf and the astra from a girl friend of mine ,but this ones are far worse looking then the ones i drove ,but if you at the time experimented the renault clio and the 205 from peugeout this in the higher range versions were even far stupid and retro in the quality of handling, this to do not compare with the new mercedes C class that looked being a car from the future at the time, the bmw had some problems in the conception and were improved in the next years this talking about the 3 series ,and not talking about the M3, that is another breed,or even better the amg version of the new C class, and that when cars manufacturers start to call cars as a "class" ,before they were just models and segments, the escort being cheap was incredible good in handling, not comparing with the bmw or mercedes ,but it was really good but only for a short period of time and good for dirt or sand roads that´s where i noticed the diference from others, good for rallyes,they did won as a team for a long period of time in the 90´s, the cosworth version was incredible to drive but very basic in construction materials and every year they changed the front grill makin´it even uglyer, the one they show now was the first in 91 has the designer entended to, but do not missunderstand me they were built with the cheapest materials available, a true paradise for the ones who love plastic, if well built(better materials) it could be a adversary to the bmw m3, wich wasn´t that good off road, it wasn´t a 4x4. i´m not a escort fanatic but has i watch this video i remenbered having one for a bit more than two years, i sold it because it turned ugly as the years passed, before in 88 i bought a saab 9000 turbo wich i still own and never get tired of it as my 2002 from bmw that i bought at the same time for what today is 250€ this in mint condition, and it is a real sportive drive you almost seat on the floor , and it turns incredible good,this comparing to most of todays cars, this in mid-range price, the 205 was really fast but it felt like it want to take of and fly, like the 88 fiesta rs wich was nice but it couldn´t handle the power ,most of this last two crashed ,also refer the polo g40 that looked good or good finishings but all the ones i knew from friends ones later others earlier they all crashed, it´s nice to remenber those days.
You can really see that Clarkson is not happy with his role on the show in this episode.

obsession with catalytic converter. As if ANYBODY wanted one in their car. Most real drivers of sports cars removed them after market to improve power.
The Astra had a shit gearbox. Like mixing a bowl of wet rice. Awful
