One thing I love about posh English is how one uses "One" instead of "I" when speaking of anything remotely negative. I'd really like to acquire that as a habit, mainly because it feels so classy 😅

It is awfully formal. Not once have I heard it uttered with that meaning in 15 years since I have been living in the UK. Sometimes I use it when I wish to confer some formality on conversations with my students, but I do it half formally, half humorously.

    • @richardsimcock4043

Only the upper echelons use it. Even Margaret Thatcher was ridiculed, rightly so, for using “one” to describe herself when talking to the press in the ‘80s

This is fiction. Nobody knows beyond the vaguest of anecdotes, from family friends and guests, how close any of them were.
Seriously the number of people who give any credence to the depictions of behind closed doors conversations, that there isn't even a record of ever happening let alone what was said, is frightening.

This conversation seems surreal. The scene might have been added with a view to exaggerating the remoteness of the Queen. But I really doubt that she would have asked her private secretary to give her a list of hobbies of her own children, who were all but Edward in their 20s at that point. She may have been a distant mother, but this is just another level of carelessness: I don’t think for a second it was accurate. If it was, the Queen was a very bad mother.
