"Speed is the essence of war" - Sun Tzu. The faster the tank goes, the less time the enemy has to react. Your speed shortens the enemies time. Speed is a lot more than "nothing" on the battlefield.
all the talking here about mobility is utterly nonsens... what counts in tank mobility.. - ground pressure (effect on mobility on different terrain) - 0-30km/h time because that counts if the tank recive fire and must move his ass out of the enemy fireline - suspension overal roadwheel travel... the more the roadwheels could move up and down the better the ride quality(crew does not get burned out as quickly) the more stable the platform is (inproves fire on the move and vision on the move) - track traction - track self cleaning - what trench wide I could pass - what obsetcals I could climb - tendency to throw a track - consumption off road with internal fuel (I dont like to get hit with 500l unprotect diesel at my rear) - fording, deep fording, submerge how fast can I prepare the tank how deep can it go - performance of the airfilter in desert warfare... has the tank a preair cleaner that throw out the majority of the sand dust so I dont need to clean my airfilters every 50km or loose dramaticly engine performance because it lack air because the airfilter are closed by sand dust (the huge tank engines need huge ammount of air to run .. example the Leo2 engine suck in 102m³ in one minute - how good is the cooling system how hot can I drive the engine transmission is ther a optional system that allows the driver to cool down his system at a stop, Leo2 has such a system if the driver put the gearbox in neutral and rev to 1100-1200rpm the fans of the aircooler run at maximum speed and reduce the system heat dramaticly fast that way the driver dont need to worry about overheating if he has the next section of hard rough driving infront of him - has the tank a hydraulic retader brake as secondary brake system or is all done by steel disc brakes only, hydraulic retader brake is maintenance free and help dramaticly to improve life time of the normal steel brake. - are there shook absorber at the road wheels that reduce the hard hits on the tank and crew in rough terrain. - how easy is the tank to drive... the more easy the tank is to drive to more mobility every driver can get out of the tank. - the driver... most important factor at tank mobility .. a total noob could fail with the best equipment and a expert could shine with average equipment.. There are many many little things that could have a HUGE effect on mobility in different situations... the more sorted out and advance the tank suspension is the better is the possible moility dont count mobility on some commercial video shoots from the developing companys.
+nagmashot hi man, thanks for your input , it was really interesting to read this stuff, may i ask where you learnt this information? i would like to learn more as well!
213331355 I was tank driver in the german Army... many years ago at the peak and closing end of the cold war as in west and east Germany the largest Armys ever faced each other with a grimming look. My tank was a Leo2 A4...all the stuff u see in the video and more I have done during training and service. At that time driver training for the Leo2 was only done with real tanks. No simulators.. I did everything from off road driving training from rough terrain to swamp, high speed driving on and offroad, tank jumping (that was realy part of standart drive training because there you can do many things wrong that will hurt the crew and can techical kill the tank), the complete mainteance work, driving in formation, driving at night with night vision devices, fording, deep fording and submerged river crossing, life fire while driving... during that time I was inffected by the technic of tanks... tanks are highly complex systems and what many dont know some parts of tanks development was/is much more expansive to develop than for example high end jetfighter... the development of chopham or multilayer armor was more expansive than the complete stealth technology for jets.. so with my personal experiece and my interest I start reading everything u can get about tanks... as a driver I was specialy interested in suspension chassi aspects.. after my time in the Army I have meet tank engineers, tankers, tank neerds from USA and europe... I even had the pleasure to meet a former ww2 US tank platoon commander who had captured one of the rare Sturmtiger, he made a battle tour with his son through europe going everywere he went with his platoon in ww2. I had the pleasure to book him hotels for a short part of his journy and we meet for dinner. Was a honor to meet a veteran who captured such a rare example
The M1 Abrams is no longer in service, if you refer to the M1-A1/A2, the range is the same as other 3rd generation MBT's, it simply uses more fuel during that range.
A columb of tanks waiting to cross a river whilst waiting for an AVLB is a tempting target for artillery, ATM crews and aircraft as is the crossing point over an AVLB, where as a tank that can cross on its own accord at what ever point is an advantage :-)
Germany would have a river authority like we do in the UK & will have known the depths of the 200+ rivers carving Germany up. The Army would have been informed & set the height of the snorkal as a design requirment like other countries do with their MBT's weight when they have old week bridges. They would have choosen suitable crossing points across the rivers so they didnt have to wait for AVLB's, which they would have also choosen crossing points that werent to wide to lay the bridge :-)
Possibly a stupid question Dave but in situations when the Leopard could cross a river underwater using the equipment shown at 2:00, how would they test the depth accurately enough to ensure that snorkel doesn't go under as well?
Ever seen movies like "A bridge too far"? A tank that can cross rivers on its own is an enormous strategically asset. It can cross (with certain limitations of course) where it wants and when it wants (no time delay). Even with AVLBs you're an easy target and you need time while the enemy can concentrate its efforts on the location you _try_ to errect a bridge. And one single hit can put all your efforts to ashes. Without air supremacy you will easily fail here.
Still, it makes the flying tank argument kind of legit. They are faster, but maybe it's just their doctrine. Remember the french amx30 tank? The protection is substandard compard to other NATO tanks, but it's quite fast and popular amongst other countries.
@wannos27 they'd TRY TO LAY THE BRIDGE ANYWAY, duh. It's an OPTION -- if hte bridging tanks blow up, or are delayed, or whatever, they CAN cross the river, rather than being picked off by ATGMs and artillery. They don't normally use the ability unless they HAVE to, but they CAN. Tanks sitting still in the open are dead tanks.
nah that cant be true. the higher the velocity the higher the air resistance. D-53 L/44 is o course slower than DM-53 L/55 and must loose less therefore.
Stimmt, das könnte auch möglich sein! Diese beiden Typen sind sich relativ ähnlich! Jedenfalls ist es kein Leo, LeClerc, T-90, M-1 Abrams oder ein sonstiger Pz der neueren Generation!
Why are you talking to me like I'm a Russian tank fanatic? I think different tanks are "the best" for different doctrines and tactics of different armed forces. It doesn't really matter to me. Though if I have to chose any tank in the world to fight in, it will be Leo 2. Leopard is popular partly because it's available, Germany is WILLING to sell it (kind of like T-72 for NATOs), and also because it's a good all-rounder. Abrams is fucking expensive and America is a bit stingy about it.
I am not talking about outrunning ammo flying towards you :-D. Its about tactics. The quicker your units move, the more pressure you put on the enemy to decide and react. (again, i am not talking about john doe behind his rocket launcher who now has to aim quicker or so :-D ). Read Sun Tzu, maybe you enjoy it. Cheers.
I am not comparing the mobilty of each tank in the video, I am showing using the footage of a number of tanks which are completing mobility tasks ie their gradiant capability, wading, trench crossing, speed etc.
Why isn't it in your title then? =P So how are you comparing mobility, if at all. The T-90 has the old 780 from the 72 and my guess is that the T-84, M-2001, or maybe even T-64BM and China's Type 99 has better mobility due to better engines and lower ground pressure for the 99. Come to think of it, how is the Ariete when it comes to mobility, especially when compared to Leopard and LeClerc? Which of the 3 is your pick for mobility?
zirofastable the T-90 isn't as great as everyone makes it out to be. Sure it's dependable, but it won't win in a 1v1 fight with an M1A1, Leclerc, Leopard 2A5, or Challenger 2. The T-90 is simply a modified T-72 with a new designation.
Ага, все преграды сходу, и в бассейне где дно выложено кафелем))) Посмотрим как этот леопёрд в бою себя поведёт. Там где грязь, снег, мороз. А ему то солярочка нужна качественная, ломаться в поле не любит....

Challenger 2 isn't meant to be the fastest. It can go almost as fast as an M1A2 Abrams off-road while being 10-20 tons heavier. The Challenger has a longer range gun and extremely heavy armour, 2 tanks built for 2 different reasons, 1 to run fast and hit on the move, the other to withstand hits and take out targets from a greater distance
You probably have seen the video of the ukrainian guys holding an airsoft campaign and they had brought in some tanks for show. You were seeing un-trained men trying to navigate medium-difficulty swamp. Not the russian army. And if you go back and take time to analyze video, leopard would probably get stuck too. And I can tell you've never done actual off-roading; it depends more on the skill of driver tbh, than technology. You need to know how much throttle to avoid thread-spinning, digging in, etc.
"Speed is the essence of war" - Sun Tzu. The faster the tank goes, the less time the enemy has to react. Your speed shortens the enemies time. Speed is a lot more than "nothing" on the battlefield.
2:06 so cool underwater fotage😮😮😮
That is a wild swim mode the turret was 10 feet underwater.
all the talking here about mobility is utterly nonsens...
what counts in tank mobility..
- ground pressure (effect on mobility on different terrain)
- 0-30km/h time because that counts if the tank recive fire and must move his ass out of the enemy fireline
- suspension overal roadwheel travel... the more the roadwheels could move up and down the better the ride quality(crew does not get burned out as quickly) the more stable the platform is (inproves fire on the move and vision on the move)
- track traction
- track self cleaning
- what trench wide I could pass
- what obsetcals I could climb
- tendency to throw a track
- consumption off road with internal fuel (I dont like to get hit with 500l unprotect diesel at my rear)
- fording, deep fording, submerge how fast can I prepare the tank how deep can it go
- performance of the airfilter in desert warfare... has the tank a preair cleaner that throw out the majority of the sand dust so I dont need to clean my airfilters every 50km or loose dramaticly engine performance because it lack air because the airfilter are closed by sand dust (the huge tank engines need huge ammount of air to run .. example the Leo2 engine suck in 102m³ in one minute
- how good is the cooling system how hot can I drive the engine transmission is ther a optional system that allows the driver to cool down his system at a stop, Leo2 has such a system if the driver put the gearbox in neutral and rev to 1100-1200rpm the fans of the aircooler run at maximum speed and reduce the system heat dramaticly fast that way the driver dont need to worry about overheating if he has the next section of hard rough driving infront of him

dont count mobility on some commercial video shoots from the developing companys.
The Leo 2 fills most of those aspects better than others.

Underwater tank.... BEAST!!!
To be fair, Eastern tanks generally do have higher power-to-weight ratios, with the possible exception of Abrams and LeClerc.
A columb of tanks waiting to cross a river whilst waiting for an AVLB is a tempting target for artillery, ATM crews and aircraft as is the crossing point over an AVLB, where as a tank that can cross on its own accord at what ever point is an advantage :-)

I WANT ONE!!!
1:30-1:42 is a Ariete C1 tank I think! Not mentioned in the title. Good video tought and to the point.
Correct it is.
Possibly a stupid question Dave but in situations when the Leopard could cross a river underwater using the equipment shown at 2:00, how would they test the depth accurately enough to ensure that snorkel doesn't go under as well?

Dammn I love German tanks and planes
i like how they go under water the abrams cant
Yeah, you're right about that. But the comment I was replying to (yours), was talking about the t-90 getting pwned by western tanks.
its a very good tank
i have never seen a tank using a schornkel before - nerves of steel would be required to use it !
lol tank get out of the water your not a submarine
Ever seen movies like "A bridge too far"?

love the hole shot 💪😃

TIger tank had also the ability to dive like leopard!
Tanks: making your super-modded lifted offroad truck look like a plastic toy since 1916.
Epic music

Leonardo made it Geeks love it! :D
Seit 70 Jahren baun wir Deutsche das Beste!!!!
Klasse statt Masse :-)
Nordmann Pommern Naja der T-90 ist nah dran aber der Abrams hat keine Chance
Nicht nur seit 70 Jahren!
Leclerc have unbeatable mobility with hyperbar propulsion ad to turbine
and warp engine!
Nope, it's an Italian C1 Ariete.
Well that just about answers my daft question in full. Cheers
@wannos27 it's made for fishing.
Omg incredible!
Leo is submarine in this video ? He,he,he...
yup
nah that cant be true.
the higher the velocity the higher the air resistance.

say what you want, when that drunk guy says he saw a guy in a tube sticking out of the water, YOU BETTER BELIEVE HIM!
Watch a tank jump outa the water and see what it feels like.
Why are you talking to me like I'm a Russian tank fanatic? I think different tanks are "the best" for different doctrines and tactics of different armed forces. It doesn't really matter to me. yeah, but the time it takes to attach snorkels and shit to a column of tanks is more likely longer then it takes for AVLB to arrive.
The tank at 1:40 is an italian ariete
Any armored vehicle can get stuck, especially a main battle tank no matter the country .
@wannos27 if you need to cross a river fast, it's kinda usefull
What are you on about?
I am not talking about outrunning ammo flying towards you :-D. Its about tactics. The quicker your units move, the more pressure you put on the enemy to decide and react. Looks like snorkel is only useful with concrete-paved bottoms.
Sorry but the mobility of the m1 abrams is not bad but the range is it because of the gas turbine engine!
when u go underwater whit Leo 2 theres going lots of air next to commander
@kaplich GEE ZUS! So much advantages :O
I thought that where russian enginers took a form for T-14 Armata, IT IS Fuckin'Leclerc.
video show leclerc leopard and ariete
ruclips.net/video/r4uT9ur9bXE/видео.html
Look at 3:00, definitely a C1 Ariete.
One is the italian Ariete
@nedorush; They are pretty fuckin' brutal.
Ca. 01:30-01:40 is a Challenger-2!
Nope. It is a C1 Ariete. Challenger 2 has 6 road wheels, not 7 as the one in the video.
Best tank.. diesel is the way..not gas
must be bad for infantry seeing that one coming
1:22 that is an italian ariete
Are you insane? Iraqis never had the T-90.
Why isn't it in your title then? =P

Upset? lol its just a video! Why would I want to add a vehicle that has poor overall mobility when making a video about mobility?
Plus that gas turbine engine isn't very reliable in the desert too
Leclerc is the best tank on earth with the Leopard, M1 and T-90 are great but not as much as the two others
zirofastable the challenger 2 is pretty awesome too
zirofastable the T-90 isn't as great as everyone makes it out to be. Sure it's dependable, but it won't win in a 1v1 fight with an M1A1, Leclerc, Leopard 2A5, or Challenger 2. The T-90 is simply a modified T-72 with a new designation.

italian Ariete

Or if Abrams have to retreat ;-) .
tank submarine :D
noice
00:03min und 00:30min ist ein Leo2a4 --- 03:00min gibt es gar nicht! Das Video ist ja nur 02:43min!
lol, " is this what you call mobility " o please tell me what it is that you think mobilty is, I really could do with a good laugh
Insert random C1 Ariete*

considering tactical mobility, you are right! But if you take a look at strategical mobility, then you are absolutely and completely wrong!
t 90 is best
T-90 got stuck in the mud. The leopard is way better sorry Russia.
lols. the mud t90 gets stuck on the leo would b stuck on too considering its much bulkier and weighs more

in that mudpile every tank wuld get stuck ... leopard is 20 tons heavier so it wuldnt even habe a chance even if another tank was pulling it
Война покажет чей танк лучше. Уже один раз показала.
Very biased video.
Ulugbek Musinov what? Not enough Soviet propaganda for you?
Challenger 2 ATDU This is turbine engine tank(Leopard 2) It's Soviet rival is T-80 which also has turbine engine etc...
Ulugbek Musinov Leo 2 has a diesel engine.
Best Tank in world is Merkava 4 from Israel
