Thanks for sharing Maddie!💕 I agree that it really helps to have open and honest conversations about stipends! My PhD is in Psychology but my fiancé is a chemical engineer doing a PhD in biomedical engineering. We get paid the same amount, but I'm sure he would get a higher paying industry job than I could at this point. So that is another interesting point for engineering students to think about! 😊

Hi Jamie! Good to hear from you, I hope you're doing well. That is a good point that I haven't really thought about. Overall it seems like grad students get paid maybe just enough to get by but if you do an hourly breakdown we are severely overworked and underpaid. Monetary distribution and expenses in academia are something that need a complete overhaul in my opinion, but that won't happen until we start conversations like this. I look forward to your next viedo!!

@@MaddieMettler Overall I'm doing good! Thanks for checking in! 😊 I have been feeling a little overwhelmed lately with a lot of "life" things going on haha, but I hope to start posting again soon!💕

    Thank you for your video.
Would you make a vdo on international student expenses?

I unfortunately don’t know much about international student expenses and how they differ from my own! I know most international students tend to live on campus, but I’m not sure how stipends work since international students have student visas which I’m not sure if they allow for paid work.

    Hello Maddie
    Thanks for sharing this video.
But I was wondering why you pay for tuition, are there no tuition waivers for RAs/TAs in your department as a PhD student at MSU?

Great question! At the start of that semester I was actually a masters student. The funding/waiver system works a bit differently depending on the program.

@@MaddieMettler I get it. I just feel that no matter how the waiver system works no one should be paying for a PhD program.

@@PerceptiveLiving I definitely agree! Luckily that was just a one semester thing I think. Also, I ended up getting a refund for most of that semester of tuition which was nice. One of the things that is so difficult about grad school is how little they tell you. As an undergrad, there is info everywhere and flowcharts and people explicitly telling you things. But that’s not really the case in grad school. I think I need to do an updated version of this video and give info about things I learned about finances
