When we arrived by boat with my mom dad brother and sister from Ostend and arrived at Dover Western Docks station I fell in love with it. I love british rail. 😍👌
Dover Western Docks station was originally called Dover Marine. It became Western Docks sometime in the 1980's. The station closed to passenger use in the early 1990's.
I used to be a signalman in that area years ago and it is very sad indeed to see what has happened. The main station area is still there but is a cruise liner terminal now and all the sidings are just car parks.
Brilliant film footage.i spent many many hours there watching the locos shunting away.just wished i had taken more pics, its all gone now.Progress i think its called oh yeah sure more like dame right murder.thanks again for posting anymore of the same ??
The NSE station nameboard was taken at the passenger station but for some reason, I did not photograph the station on that day. I guess I got carried away with the slim jims in the yard. I'll post some footage of the station later that was taken on another day.
had some of that as a dover fireman, when it all went I was going to be a driver at the priory but the thought of driving electrics for 30 years did not appeal to me, so quit and went to Australia, had a great life for 35 years in oz
man this brings back memories of the motorail service to stirling when i was a lad in the late 70s and early 80 , we would cross the channel on a british rail ferry to boulogne maratime and wait for the auto- couchette to take us to st rasphael . what has happened to this great world we used to live in eh?
Only just found this film. What a busy place it was. Now all that busyness has been transferred to the road, with approach roads jammed with trucks. A train could bring in as much as twenty truckloads or more. No logical sense to it. !!
@kratos32godofwar There is nothing there but a empty yard with not tracks or anything, its a car park infront of the station building and a criuse terminal is housed in the station.
@Panarail Oh right. all you get at Dover Priory these days is London Victoria, London Charing Cross or St Pancres International Trains other than ones running though to Ramsgate.
Can someone advise please.I am sure trains albeit freight ones used to run along the public road between the Eastern and Western Docks many years ago.I am sure I have read about it somewhere accompanied by a photo.
I just looked at the area on Google maps and I was horrified. Everything has gone !!!! No station buildings... NOTHING !!! Look for Lord Walden Square in Dover on Google Maps. I am actually sorry I looked.
what a lovely video 👍and it's only 30 years ago loads of diesel's and freight now what have we got lorries to glog up our roads instead of it being on rails who ever decided to close Dover western docks wants shooting it's not to late to put it back as it was and remove those lorries have you anymore video's please
And its called progress(not) i can never fathom why the train ferry was scrapped what happens to hazadous loads now,oh yes send them down the tunnel nice move!

I was a signal lad at Hawksbury street many moons ago. What a treasure this is.
Five stars
The driver changing ends retired 2 weeks ago. His name was Ken Ross and a proper character. Another great loss to us.
I worked on that platform in 1989 checking the cars that came on the cartics and autics. Some great times.

Hard to believe it's all gone, it wasn't that long ago :s
Great video, 5 stars.
This just shows how good we were in those days
Fantastic video, shame Dover isn't like that nowadays.

They used to have to pull the trains off the boats in pairs,2 33's next to each other racing up the moving deck so the boat wouldnt capsize, nice vid

great video thanks for sharing thumbs up
I have another clip on here of Dover Priory to Dover Western Docks as seen from an EMU. Apart from that, I don't think I have very much more.
Keep watching Stuart, you will soon see a clip from a train passing Hawksbury Street on it's way into Western Docks station.
takes me back :-D

Just wondering why theres Intercity Stock at Dover Marine/Western Docks Station? I know they used to use a Swallow livery diesel for VSOE trains.
@goldie103103 If I recall correctly, the stock in question was a Manchester Piccadilly working.

very interesting Panarail .... cheers ;-)
Best video yet :D

sure did with a flagmen in front of the engine, the engine had to be an o4o or an 060 due to the tight curves, interesting times
I lived in Dover for 12 years ,I wonder what people do for a living in Dover these days, no dock work no coal mines, how does Dover cope

Great Sultzer thrash, can't beat it
Thanks for the message.
Do you know if there is any railway left down at Western Docks and if so, is it used at all.
no sadly it's all gone though the siding in the video with the diesel the driver changing ends is still visible
That is Archcliffe boa at "2.37" bye the bye.
Stuart..
Thats "Archcliffe junction" at 2.37 by the way..
Stuart.
the channel tunnel should be filled in to stop the aliens invading us
You'd be arrested at gunpoint for filming this now!
Sad isn't it?
Lots of 33s
We need this all back just for the sake of making Eurotunnel drop it's punitive rates for goods trains. Monopoly stinks of radioactive poo!
And its called progress(not) i can never fathom why the train ferry was scrapped
what happens to hazadous loads now,oh yes send them down the tunnel
nice move!
All traffic is on the road now, more fuel tax revenue and stuff the environment.
