  • So after a bit of a creative lull, I decided to go for a motorcycle ride on the BSA Goldstar 650 just to see what was around, perhaps out of Albufeira and into the mountains. I was not disappointed.
    Roads show in this video N125, M502, ER267 & N266... great riding...

Hi Kenneth, I thought so too. Was much needed. I've also booked two weeks off work so I hope to get another couple of big rides under my belt here. What an amazing place. We are also coming back to the UK in June so I hope by then the weather really does clear up and we get the long awaited sunshine. I do have a couple of rides I'd like to tick off in the UK and they will be so much nicer if the sun is out! Cheers, Sean

Hello again Sean & Suzie- That was really a blast traveling along with you on the ride. It gave me some prospective how a part of Portugal looks; as I have never been there. So thanks for taking your time in creating this video for us. I also prefer to go at it, with a slower pace. I want to see as much scenery as possible, & I cannot do so at a zippety do-da pace. What's the point of traveling if your constant attention is watching every bend ahead of you? Have a beautiful day my friends! Cheers!! Illinois, USA

Hi Larry, thanks for stopping by. I was also shocked by how nice Portugal is, a real surprise and make's us want to stay here longer term. Funnily enough I was reading the 'Portugal News' which is in English and one of the articles was about tourism and particular the increasing numbers of Americans coming, United were planning a New York to Faro direct flight. One appeal is the pace of life here and the cheap property. We spoke to one chap on the beach who sold his condo (I think it was Florida) and moved to the Algarve for a property half the price. Oh yes I love to 'bimble' about on a motorcycle, usually at 10mph under the speed limit, you saw how fast those lads passed me on their bigger bikes. It would actually take me quite some effort to ride that fast safely and concentrate on the road ahead! Have a good day yourself Larry! Cheers, Sean

Hey Sean. Hope you’re feeling better. And thanks for this video which I needed to help me out of a bit of a slump lately. Kind of lousy, inconsistent weather with not much opportunity to ride. Those roads in the Algarve look perfect for my kind of riding. Wish I was there. Thanks again for taking us along . Cheers and ride safe. Dan. ✌️🏍🇨🇦

Thanks Dan. I think in the UK the weather has been very similar going by the comments and the reports from family and friends in the UK, not great for riding. I have actually been in a slump myself, so was good to get up and out just spend 3-4 hours 'bimbling' around roads I'd never discovered before, and yes the sun very much helped. Also I find there's not as much pressure to make a video when it's a travel about video compared to a bike test having to recall all facts and figures so really enjoyed the ride and the video! Thanks for the support. Sean

HI Crumbly, thanks for the comment. Yes most of the roads aren't perfectly smooth I have to admit that you can see the camera bouncing up and down but there's zero potholes and that is nice. Probably because they don't get the harsh winter with rain and ice. I've seen a couple of fixed cameras on the A-roads but that's it. They are a grey box type camera but there's not really the great effort to catch, monitor, track, regulate, control (take your choice) traffic that more wealthy countries seem to engage in. Overhead gantries full of average speed cameras... forget it.

A great video Sean, the BSA certainly goes round the corners well as i found out myself in the first week of ownership, down here in the South West.
I had the same thing happen to me in the eighties riding my T120 with no gloves on in summer, a wasp flew up my sleeve and stung me, i slammed on the brakes, stopped and ripped off my jacket. a nasty shock.
    Am loving following your adventures.

Thanks Gordon, appreciate this comment. I think if I didn't have 5 year old tyres with signs of cracking on (I have a 72 plate bike that must of sat in a warehouse over the pandemic) then I would probably press on a little more. That said in the hotter temperatures you are less worried about cold tyres and lack of grip. Even still the BSA is a really fun bike to blip around on. It's got that much more power than my old RE 350 that means you're still having the old fashioned experience but not restricted just to plodding if the mood takes you. Oh the bee, yes that was a shock, I've not been stung for years so it was overdue 😂

No problem at all Gary, I was sat there myself wondering why the trip wouldn't reset. As everything with the BSA when you look a little deeper it's actually quite well thought out! I expect as the Goldstar matures it will become a more accepted bike, my Dad was telling me he remembers people hating Japanese bikes in the 60s because of their treatment of PoWs. Well now people love those bikes so I guess it's just a matter of time. I looked up the A65L and that was quite large capacity bike wasn't it, perhaps one of the most powerful old BSAs? Nice to hear from someone who has experienced the new and the original BSA bikes. Thanks, Sean

1:50 Renault 4 replendent with the classic old white on black registration plates.
This is as near as I get to social media. Silves is rather nice. Olhao is worth visiting. Other than there, at least on the coast, I don't think anywhere is that good, apart from Tavira in the east, until you get out west. Portimao is a working town worth visiting [you appeared to be on the outskirts of it at the end of the video]. Lagos is the best place on the Algarve, but I'm biased as I have a place there. Sagres on the southwest tip is stunning, too. Monchique, north of Portimao: well worth visiting.
I agree. A bike is for riding. I like to see miles on mine. I take it you like the BSA. You ride at my pace.
Portugal was my first ever bike trip in 1983, on a Yamaha XT500. I had a wild time. In total I must have ridden there about 17 times before moving there.
I am back in Portugal on May 15. You'll be gone by then, I bet. I enjoyed the video. Nick

Huge beach where Suzie can run a yoga class and land available to buy and probably apartments we haven't got that far. Start of the year we were looking for which country and we are slowly narrowing down the search so it's really great. It was lovely out there, did a bit more of the same today actually. I read your update post on FB was great 👍. I'm thinking of for example that chap with his shadow black and some mods that posted recently. Nice to see a couple more new owners. I'm enjoying mine and I've got a T100 speed twin 900 whatever it's called now ride planned so will be interesting to see how that compares... thanks Lumpy 😊 p.s yes the 3.5mm jack was slightly out probably tugged on my jacket so recorded only left. When you put yourself "out there" you have to expect criticism from fools who IMO don't know what they are talking about😮. Personally what irritates me and maybe trolls is when the presenter inserts his own preferences on what he likes and not what is. If you like a slipper clutch or cruise control thats your opinion and not a reason for knocking the bike. I've cut off many that don't take the bike for what it is ie they want a 10 grand bike for 4 grand.

Thanks Bob, this particular post was a dealer who had produced a custom Goldstar scrambler. People were very rude about the bike down to the colours he chose, saying he'd copied others and saying it was illegal etc. He replied to a few delicately and politely, but 20+ baiting comments later he lost it and just quit the group. Shame as he was a good contributor. Luckily for me Bob I tend to like cheaper bikes and I don't expect them to have cruise and so on... I think the BSA has a slipper tho. I'm swaying a little away from bike reviews at the moment (though I've got two in the works) just doing ride out style vids which I'm enjoying especially over here. Portugal really is great! Sean. Don't want to be a negative, but, you really need to learn how to pronounce some of the Portuguese place names, before you film .It may only take one or two minutes to ask locally , but it is polite, and may help to prevent the stupid continuation of Brits no bothering to learn. Also, most of the 'off road tracks' that you see from the road, are not necessarily for fun, but, are Fire-breaks, created by the local Fire departments, and landowners, as a way of potentially helping in the control of wild fires.

That is a fair critique. I wish I was better but I don't pick up languages for a few reasons. I'm tongue tied (according to the dentist), I have high frequency hearing loss, somewhat dyslexic and my brain is 95% science based (I have two science degrees). It's an uphill battle with me 😂😂
