I think a vstrom 650 is the perfect winter bike, enough power, really comfy, good weather protection... Sean, I just wanted to say thank you for the suggestion you made to Willie regarding my recent break-in I was very touched, thankfully I have more than enough tools but really appreciate the thought 😊
I agree about the V strom, particularly that 650 engine im a fan of. I was sorry to hear about the tools, that really is awful. Hope you get things sorted 🙏 👍
Hi Sean & Susie - it’s Big Rodders in Ireland. My choice for a winter machine would be a large wheel scooter with a full screen. It needs to be light so a Honda 125 Mode or Vision would suffice. They both can cruise at 45/50mph, a prudent speed on winter roads. You don’t need a large bike at any time of the year to enjoy motorcycling, which I’ve proved on my 2020 Honda Monkey that now does 6000 miles a year.
Love your walks up on the hills guys, you have a lovely day on this particular walk, had several Hacks over the years, bought just to ride in the winter months fully expecting them to suffer the most successful Hacks I’ve had were all MZ 125 - 150 - 250 - and 301 Saxon tour which in my mind was the most successful, fully enclosed chain case, ally wheel rims, very crashable, simple to fix at the side of the road, hand guards and 3 finger winter gloves, WD40 everything good to go, my problem is they all became as precious as my summer / best bikes, and were usually ridden through the summer as well racking up big mileages 2 other hacks I had which were brilliant a Suzuki GN grey import which was thrashed to death every day and never let me down and a Greek built Chinese scooter, replica of a Yamaha ( what a pedigree 😳) that I can’t even remember the name of twist n go 125 was superb not cherished or looked after as was sure it would last only a few weeks it wasn’t until 3 years later and on its second set of tyres (not inc the ones it came on) did I ever bother to give it a service swopped with cash for a Vespa px and I see him riding it still, and taking it on his motorhome on holiday, …… Pete 🇫🇷
Thanks Pete for the comment. I can see how a 'lowly' winter hack can become a faithful and cherished summer bike. I'm kind of in between with the BSA, I've been using it in all weather's but I still want to look after it and ideally it wouod scrub up well still come spring. I've drawn the line at taking it out when the roads have been salted as I think that would really ruin the appearance... was also thinking perhaps an old Himalayan would be a good winter bike. I must admit I didn't consider a scooter but I will probably have a browse at them now 😂... cheers, Sean
@@MindfulMotorcyclist Nothing beats a scooter for practicality and ease of maintenance in the winter or any other time of year to be honest. 300-350cc Chinese "maxi" scooters from the likes of Zontes or Lexmoto have plenty of power.
Really great points guys and I agree. I just picked up a himi 411 for exactly this reason also duals up as a green laner. 🤙🏼they are cheap, cheerful and forgiving in rubbish weather with the easy throttle and low power.
@@MindfulMotorcyclist crazy bargains to be had with the 450 coming out too. Mine was 3k for a 2024 model with 2 1/2 warranty!! It definitely goes on the motorway and will do 70. Happiest at 65 and I’ve had 82!!! Out of her 😂
I've just retired and got back into biking. I bought a cheap 45 year old Honda 250 Superdream last year as an all year/Winter Hack, with the intention of getting a nicer and better bike later in the Spring - but keeping the Honda. The trouble is, although I do use it in bad weather, I've grown quite fond of the Honda and feel guilty taking it out on dirty roads. I did previously have a BMW F650 - that was ideal as a Hack and I never felt guilty about riding it in any conditions.
My BSA is sorn until spring. I have a 125cc scooter if needing a fix but then strap it to back of motorhome and ride in spain in the warmth. Keep up the good work the both of you.
Good morning from a bleak, snowy Northamptonshire! My winter hack is my shiny Interceptor, not by choice but my car has been in the garage for five weeks with a fault the dealer struggling to diagnose. I have fitted my GIVI boxes (I normally have canvas panniers on it from Classic Rides RUclips channel) which are super practical for getting a few days shopping. I am washing it often but resigned to the fact that the aluminium engine cases are now a mess and going to need to fully sanded and polished. So for a winter hack, I would choose a RE Classic black edition (exhaust, engine etc) with black mag wheels with big plastic bins. Wishing you both all the best for 2025 and I look forward to more episodes of rambles on the hill. 😊
Good morning Dave! We also had our car in the garage, with a gear box problem... luckily it was the gear selection sensor and not the auto box itself as that would be a lot. Ah, yes, hard case boxes are ideal for shopping and deliveries. My adventure bike was good for that. Yes a alloy wheeled classic which is quite rare i imagine would be a great winter bike... cheers, Sean
I must admit I wouldn't mind a Crf this time of year, then again it's time to ride it aswell. I do find the meteor a fun day bike on rougher stuff so that will have to do for now 👍😎
Small, lightweight, smooth power delivery and low bench seat so you can put your feet down flat if things get slippy, and your pillion can slide on from the back without you having to support the weight. Straight away that cuts out 3/4 of the bike market leaving you with either modern retros, like a 250 Mutt, Herald or whatever other brands there are this month, or the older Japanese models they're based on. 90% of the time I'll take my Triumph Scrambler out, but that's mainly because living in the edge of London we don't get huge amounts of grit and salt, but on a chill winter's day for a potter round the Buckinghamshire countryside nothing beats my Sinnis Scrambler 125. Yes, it's a bit rusty in places, the bolts have gone a bit furry with corrosion, and the spokes are pitted and dull grey but that's the point of a winter hack, just give it a quick hose down occasionally, Yes, it's slow, but less speed = less wind chill and winter riding is about the enjoyment of being out not getting your knee down on an icy corner and ending up in A&E. Of course the risk is, you end up loving your winter hack for the enjoyment it brings you, and then you start cherishing it, restoring it, and needing another hack because your original one is too good to take out in the winter.
Nice. I got my classic 350 (Stealth Black ...with spoked wheels) for winter riding (My Continental GT650 rarely goes out on salty roads). The classic gets washed a lot but spokes are a bit of a chore to clean and do get tarnished. Just got some heated gloves a few weeks ago (don't know why I haven't had these before). However there's a lot of snow today and roads are pretty bad where I'd normally ride (up here in Durham), plus temperatures expected to drop to -8/-9C on the hills over the next few days, so not going out quite yet ...but eager to get out as soon as icy conditions go (snow on the roadsides etc I'm fine with).
Hi guys, looks like a beautiful day up there today 👍.. I'm biased and I would say a Royal enfield, himalayan or meteor. Yes the himi has spokes but just spray them with gt85 or I've literally bought (today) spray on vaseline from lidl. Anyway both have blacked out engines and no chrome etc and will take 2 up and with some soft or hard luggage, great for a flask and grub and tyre weld. And you can get an early himi for 2 - 2-5 k.👍
The Himalayan is getting a lot of votes now in this unofficial poll! I'm going to start the daydreaming on eBay haha! I do also love a Meteor and cast wheels...
I bought a small heated usb pad. About 8/9 inches square. Plug into usb of your bike, and hey presto. Heated seat.😊 Unfortunately too cold for me with my health issues. To go out. No enjoyment if your cold, and then your pride and joy gets real dirty. I did ride all year to get to work, when younger. As back then, needs must.😊 Happy new year, to you both.😊
