Absolute pearls are amazing. A product I always have to hand.

I'll also add, to my knowledge that absolute pearls were developed by the same person that created the evolution aqua balls.

Be good to see if you could try pothos plant on a new tank, or even a old one to see if it lowers nitrates.

This might be an unfair judgement because I added them during a nitrite spike on a tank with an established sponge filter, but they did nothing, my betta was moved out (I lost him amyway) and I added a massive overdose at a small handful to a 45 litre tank with no result.

Best way to start you're filter is to take a piss inside the water en let the filter do his thing and let the bacteria grow.. Then add fish

Shouldnt you turn the UV off? Doesnt UV kill bacteria. Once it`s established in the biomedia then it`s fine to be on, but a bit flawed if you ask me :-)

Pity you did the water change, you haven't grown enough bacteria to handle the spike only enough bacteria for what was left after the water change.
