In 1972, I went to get a new Harley. I was single, in the service, just returned from overseas with a lot of cash, no worries. Went to the dealer in Pensacola, Florida. The only bikes on the floor were used. He had a couple new ones but they already belonged to some one and were awaiting them to pick them up. I was told that at that time, the waiting list was almost a year. Meanwhile you would have to go ahead and pay for it in advance or start financing it. I would be paying for it for a year or more before I got the bike and it would already be a year old. So I went and bought a used bike. A 72 original sportster. Had that bike for years and rode it all over the country. Today I have a 2003 sporty and my Kawasaki vulcan 1500. I have an old Yamaha 650 for a project bike. I think it is an 83. And I have a 82 Honda GL500 I am rebuilding for a friend. My riding partner has a 2018 Victory Gunner. What a beast. Thanks for the video. I am looking for a mid 2000's 1100 to 1300cc area. I like the Yamahas , Hondas and Kawasakis. Love the words of wisdom. God bless ya'll
Hell yeah my friend. Me and one of my brothers have 02 fatboys and my other brother has an 03. It's only 3 of us that ride together but we sound like a damn dragon going down the road on these machines without being too abrasive. These older fatboys have the perfect volume and rumble right!
I went to order a 2000 Fatboy brand new. The MSRP was $16,700. The dealer had several lined up for $23,000 and up. I told him I would be fine with waiting 9 months for one. He refused to order me the bike. He said I just didn’t want it bad enough! I couldn’t believe that a Harley dealer wouldn’t let me order a new bike. I still go visit that dealer to test ride bikes I’m interested in. Then I go on Craigslist and buy the same type of bike for $5,000 less.

I picked up a 1998 FLSTF in September of 2020 and I am liking it It was well cared for low mileage and a one owner bike. It is much lighter than the Harleys I have had over the years and handles like my 1941 Sport Solo did with more power and more gears.
I love floor Boards and I am liking my 98 Fatboy and five gears seems good to me. I never used a heel toe shifter before until I got my 02 FLSTC. Up until it I had only owned one foot shift bike my 72 FLH. At first i forgot to use the heel shift but once I got use to it I liked it a lot. Good Video Thanks.
I remember when you had to place deposit and wait 18 months for a new HD. They were never meant to be an impulse purchase. I give HD 12 months to restructure or go bankrupt. I went to HD of San Francisco and Fulsom HD recently and they were both void of customers. The local stealership closed down in January where I live in Northern California after 30 years.
It's a shame because they're making better bikes than they ever have. They are actually liquid cooled. Air cooling in this millennium was just unacceptable to me. Especially considering the Japanese were doing it it the 70s and the price of a HD.
while it's true that there was a time when Harley couldn't keep up with demand, and used Harley's would often sell for more than a new one, 2003 was not the "pivotal moment" when that changed. This is a situation that started building in the late 80's after the introduction of the Evo Big Twin in 84, and the Evo Sportster in 86. This situation reached it's peak around 1990-91 right around the time the Fat Boy was introduced and then co-starred with Arnold in T2. After that everyone wanted a Black Fat Boy. As Harley realized that the demand was going to continue, they invested in expanding manufacturing capacity, eventually acquiring an old Briggs & Stratton plant in Kansas City. In 1991 I bought my first Harley, a 91 Sportster. There was a six month wait on a Sportster, but I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time and was able to buy it when the guy who ordered it backed out if the deal because he didn't like the paint. In 95 I traded it in on a Dyna Super Glide that I waited six months for. I worked for a Harley dealer in 1997-98, and even by then the situation was starting to turn around to a point that unless you were ordering a special color or an anniversary model you didn't have a long wait, and as often as not bikes were on the showroom floor ready to buy. Resale values were still up and when circumstances forced me to sell my Dyna, I got close to the price of a new one, but nowhere new to what I had in it. It was a lot closer to 2000 when the tide had turned and Harley was making enough bikes to meet the demand. The reason you see so many anniversary badged 100th anniversary models is because every last 2003 wore anniversary badging, where previous anniversary models were limited to 1,993, or 1,998 units for the calendar year of the anniversary. Harley did this because many dealers had been taking deposits for the 100th anniversary models since the 95th anniversary.
Makes sense on the amount of them. All being badged anniversary that year. I too thought by 2000 the tide had shifted and the whole used bike being more expensive than a new bike trend was a thing of the past. Now, currently, they are a dime a dozen. I just bought a mint condition blue 100th Ann Dyna Super Glide for $3,500. Really hard to believe what I paid for a used Softail in 1995 or 96 but it was 14k and I think it may have been a 1989 or something. It was a softail custom. 99% of the motorcycles I see on the road today are Harley's (Central PA) but my have the prices come down, at least on used ones.
Bro I was there last Saturday. But you guys were closed . I was visiting my cousin in Ephrata I took a pic. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 we Dominicans love your videos 2 ✌ God bless you guys. Hopefully I'll buy a bike from you guys soon
I had an 06 Fat Boy. It was a great bike and my only complaint would be the same complaint I had with any pre 2007 HD, it needs a taller top gear for interstate cruising. The speed limit in Idaho and Montana where I ride is 80, so the RPMs were just too high. I don't like working the motor that hard.
Actually the Harley supply and demand problem lasted well into 2005. In 03 Harleys were going for as much as 20K over MSRP for some anniversary models. Some dealers wouldn't sell you a new Harley for any price unless you had a Harley to trade in. I did a video about this if you'd like more info. Here's a link. ruclips.net/video/MqinqsK-LZc/видео.html

i have a 2003 bought new , absolutely love it , everything that could be changed to chrome and 100th logo was , have python pipes .. Gets compliments ever where it goes.. great bike
You're ageing yourself man. Back in 88 or 89 my Dad took delivery of his new 883 Hugger. He gave just price which was around 4700. Fast forward into the 90s, hes on a waiting list to take a bigger bike from his dealer. Mind you back then most dealers put you on a waiting list at retail or you had dealers with no wait lists, but they charged 1500 to 3000 over retail. My Dad takes Delivery of his 97 Electraglide at retail around 17000. He puts his bike up for sale on consignment and the dealer sold his sportster for 6400, the dealer kept 500 and my Dad got 5900 for a 8 year old bike that he gave around 4700 for. 2 years later we're in a shop that doesn't do wait lists and they have a Sportster Sport on the floor. Campbells HD, 1999 Xl1200s in Scarlet Red. Bike listed for around 8495, they're price was 11500. Now this shop would load all their bikes up with 1500 worth of accessories on it and charge another 1500 for the "labor" to justify the pricing. I wanted that bike but I didn't want those accessories. I had the money to buy, even knowing that I was paying a premium over it, and I still sat and talked with the sales guy. He wrote down all the accessories I wanted, he went to the woman that owned the shop and she came back and said no. I wanted to dress the bike up or get a different bike and dress it up with all the performance Screaming Eagle parts and she said no. Sad thing was just about 7 or 8 years before that very shop had been owned by husband and wife and the husband had ran the shop as a waiting list retail shop. The owner was a nice guy, him and his wife divorced, she got the shop and she was a real old Cunt. She later sold the shop to some Used Car salesmen and they've had a lot of success with it. Black Diamond HD, they're still douchebags though. I called up Widmans in St Louis and they had a silver one for 9500 and I never looked back.
What's really hurt Harley is people not being able to pull money out of their houses so easily. I think everyone was spending their equity from 1999-2007. I knew so many people who bought 2003 bikes.. a couple guys who bought more than one even.. saying they were "investments". Didn't really work out that way.
@Casey R. Maybe, but we tend to think in terms of the US market which is not that significant in number of riders compared to the rest of the world. Europe and Asia are still seeing new young riders in droves. Especially the Asian market to include India.
I love my 100th Fat Boy (Silver over Black), has medium beach bars, lowered, Freight Train Nachelle, and Vance and Hines Long Shots. Gets attention anywhere I ride it.
I got the 2003 fxd tricked out with spotlights and apes and a completely leathered out on black and chrome and I love it and cant bring myself to sell it or trade out, when the engine wears out I'll have it overhauled no matter the cost, that's how much I love it..
Sean, here is how to get that boot mark off your exhaust pipe.... Get the pipe warm NOT HOT, just warm.... Put some mechanic's hand soap on a cotton rag and rub it in until it is gone. DO NOT USE PUMAS HAND SOAP, PUMAS SCRATCHES!!! Use the mechanic's hand soap that is creamy.... Takes that boot mark right off. It also can be used on that shirt you got oil on or other greasy stuff (pork ribs dripping on your shirt). Rub it on the greasy spot, toss it in the wash and voila, grease spot gone.... BTW, I have a 2003 CVO Road King with Gold Leaf lettering for Harley Davidson.... Stock paint.
@Hell's favorite NPC #69OU812 . exe I have tried it brother and you are right, it works great. Now if I only used it on my ugly, dirty oven, like I should....
The biggest advantage Harley Davidson has is the fact that if needed you can get the bike repaired almost anywhere here in the states. There’s a ton of aftermarket support, OEM parts, accessories etc. Additionally they have the lowest depreciation rate of any production motorcycles. They’re not for everyone and not everyone should ride one. By the way I don’t own one but I respect them.
gwynn romano not of this age, dealerships don’t work on bikes that are 15-20 yrs old. The techs aren’t even trained on them. So you’d have to go to independent shops like the rest of us. The dealer network is for rubs, who buy every couple of years.
Big Bear Bonneville I didn’t say you had to go to a dealership. I know that there are many independent shops, that’s what I meant by saying you can get it fixed nearly anywhere in this nation.
The Harley's of today are soooo much improved with there modern machinery. No more oil slobbering. Fuel injection can't be beat out west where altitudes can change 8,000' in a few hours. Soft tail smoother than my Caddie!
Got my '93 fatboy last year: now, of the three bikes that i own Fatso is the oldest and the one i tend to the most, because of the look and the engine, i love the Evo... but for handling, my '99 Road King is a dream on wheels (at least for me)
My step dad cant ride his anymore. He got in a trucking accident and is now suffering dementia quite badly. His is black. Ive always been partial to speed bikes but as a 36 year old now I definitely understand that sometimes you just want to ride in comfort.
I have a 1989 FXRS Low Rider. IMO, H-D ended with the EVO engine. The Twin Cam was junk from the word go. At least it shook like a Harley should, till it fell apart. Then came the M8. As if the overheating problems, crankshaft failures, and cam chain tensioner failures of the Twin Cam (all of which tended to destroy engines) weren't bad enough, the M8 has a lot more in common with the Honda Goldwing engine as far as the sound and feel goes, which means there isn't any. It might as well be electric. The traditional H-D riding experience is completely gone.
Still have the 03 100th anniv RK gun metal blue fat white walls w/122k on the clock just got mustang low profile seat, stretched painted hard bags to match....fishtail exhaust tips and my cholo blanket on the handlebars.........love it "vatos locos 4ever mein"
Me too. The best Harley's I've owned were carbureted 5 speeds. My last on was fuel injected and it wasn't quite the same. They did a great job on the new M8 though. But I still miss the carburetor days.
Me too, I ride a 1995 1200 & absolutely love it, 5 speed & carberauted, only 491 lbs & way better than the current Sportys. I had a 2008 1200 Custom & hated it. Terrible bike, kept blowing rocker box gaskets, 21 inch front wheel was horrible. I love the mid 90's Sportsers & Dynas
Absolutely, I have a 94' springer bad boy, and love it. Bought it a few years back. Totally different to my 2007 fatboy. Both great bikes, but the character of the old Evo is just something you can't buy now. I'd buy another Evo in a heartbeat
Love Floor-Boards. I cheat when it comes to shifting. I shift up with the edge of my shoe-sole. It has also 3/8th of an inch edge, enough to lift the front shift tab. Then to shift down, just tap down. Easy. I never lift my foot off the floor-board.
Now the market is showing that you can get a used Harley for only a few hundred $$ for an equivalent metric bike...that being said, at the point I’d be happy or even be able to afford a Honda Rebel just to get riding again..but still, the market is definitely a buyers game now!
Harley may have made lot of money these last 2 decades but they've flooded the market and expanded so much they'll be in the same place as Hondas which does very well on the market but honda covers many cycling areas and Harley prior to now was in a safer place and was in a more defined place. Last yr i bought a very nice softail for 4500. 13 yrs ago i paid 12,500 for a softail
I heard the same story from motor man. I love HD bikes, I think is the best out there for what I would to have....but I would not spend 13k to 15k in one. I prefer to spend 8k in a used gold wing
Jon Campo You mean the bike built by the company that built the Harley killer, oh wait, they discontinued that to build the what, 4th or 5th version of Indian?, I mean Polaris “Indian” . Ask victory owners what it’s like owning a unicorn!
WD 40 or some light weight oil works wonders on those begs as well as floorboards that are sti8ff and hard to move up and down Sean. The Fatboy is and always will be my bike for me to ride anywhere.
I have a 03 Electra glide. Runs great but recently the 88Ci motor is starting to make a ticking noise. I’ve had 96CI and it never made any noise like that
Our Director of our F.A.I.T.H. Riders chapter has a 100th anniversary Road King. Nice bike. He rides it everywhere. Very dependable, looks great, sounds great and is pretty quick (fun quick, not record setting).
I know your post is a year old and I'm sure you figured out that 6th gear is just an overdrive. 5 speed has longer gears from 2-5 gear. 5th gear at 100 is around 3100 rpm just like a 6 speed. 6 speed has shorter gears so you're shifting more. I figured that taking off (rolling) in 2nd gear will keep up with a smaller motor 5th gear.
In 2002 the Harley dealers sales staff asked you where you live, because they carved up the whole US into sales areas, sort of like a club, to prevent capitalism. I hope Indian and Can Am keep getting better and forces them to not be such overpriced underdesigned bikes- they have improved a lot since 2002.
I have been a performance rider all my life but I do have love for the Fat boy. I love the way it looks and sounds and it would keep me from going all Isle of Mann.
My g g g G pa is General John black jack Pershing...he was a big part in the military using the harley first to chase ponchovilla while he and the native warriors ran on horses...he was an amazing general and is actually the only general to become 4 star general of the armies while alive...the only other person to carry this title in George Washington...and his was after death...pretty cool story I learned...keep up the vids...be safe out there
Jonathan L nope. A lot of parts on a Harley take a 10mm wrench. I work on bikes as a hobby and I have a full set of metric wrenches along with standard. My Jeep is the same way.
I have a 04 softail fxsti with 16k mi i cant give it away in Arizona for some reason. Ive had it for sale for 6500 to 7000 for 2 years. Even 5k no one even interested. Its a great bike. I just dont like riding anymore with so many close calls and even going down once. So yeah cant sell . Apparently not desirable
Around the Capitol beltway we only had two Harley Davidson dealerships Fort Washington Harley Davidson and Rockville Harley Davidson And they were small dealerships Now the dealerships are huge Fancy buildings and I have no idea how many there are
I remember the days of the waiting lists for a NEW HD. I knew guys that would order a new HD every year and sell their used bike for a great price. Of course this type of anomoly can never last forever but for sure the assclowns that were running HD at this time were some of the dumbest merfers imaginable. You have a great product and name brand that has reached premium price and cult status and you decide to flood the market with overproduction.
Better than SC and some other southern states. I still prefer to ride in the south. Just upgrade your front shocks to 1" longer or monoshocks and you're good.
Thats what im wanting do you still have it and can we do 5 to 6 grand please hit me back if its do able or one like it im having issues with the site guess im domb thanks
Did they ever pay back that $2.4 billion they borrowed? Could explain why the prices are so bloated, need more money's to pay creditors. I don't think Harley saw the used market as ever being a threat to their new sales. They figured the briefcase bikers were going to last forever.
i remeber when i first seen a new black fat boy had the solid chrome wheels completely black n chrome bike thought it was baddest bike back in high school

Just bought a 2012, no mods, completely original… what an amazing bike and only 38k km… gotta luv it!
I'm 6'2" and the Softails always seem too cramped. Definitely not a 2-up bike for me.
I love how you ride the bike, while talking about it. Much better than just sitting on it and talking.
Youve always got the stories man.
i have a 2003 bought new , absolutely love it , everything that could be changed to chrome and 100th logo was , have python pipes .. Gets compliments ever where it goes.. great bike
Ride Like a Pro Jerry made an excellent video about this topic.
yeah and doesn't quote works of fiction
@@mrkapusta9935 that must have fealt good to stick it to the Christians! Did that 10 seconds of video really bother you that much?
@@andyman8983 as a Christian doesn't this guy's fake holiness to garner sympathy from other Christians bother you?
@@alexanderconti521 what is fake about it? He quotes a scripture and moves forward with his motorcycle video.
@@andyman8983 it's super pandering.
Love my 2003 Fatboy , looks as new as the day I bought it. Great scripture too.....amen !
I had a pearl white “03 FXST. Put a lot of money in it. Loved that bike. Never turned a screw on it.
Still have my 03 blue fat boy. Still love it as much as I did the day I brought it home
You guys going to do walk around video as well? Bike looks sick
Yes
I turned my 01 Fatboy into a full on bagger with the fairing, tourpack and hard bags.
I got the 2003 fxd tricked out with spotlights and apes and a completely leathered out on black and chrome and I love it and cant bring myself to sell it or trade out, when the engine wears out I'll have it overhauled no matter the cost, that's how much I love it..
THEbest sounding bike I hawe ewer hear not wchen its parkt or up to 2000 rpms but all the way up ..great clip ..God blees u guys
I had a used 03 Anniversary silver and black Dyna Lowrider. Best Harley I ever owned. Wish I still had it.
Awesome tip
@@Srkcycles Hope it helps. Take care brother.
@Hell's favorite NPC #69OU812 . exe I have tried it brother and you are right, it works great. Now if I only used it on my ugly, dirty oven, like I should....
I was just about to suggest this. I've used the oven cleaner with great results, but I prefer the mechanics hand soap. Awesome tip.
Yup...I used Gojo for years to get grease out of chef coats...cool to know it works on exhaust!
Amen Brother! So awesome you to read a verse before a ride
The Harley's of today are soooo much improved with there modern machinery. No more oil slobbering. Fuel injection can't be beat out west where altitudes can change 8,000' in a few hours. Soft tail smoother than my Caddie!
Like your commentary...ring along there birds chasing a big bird up there...lol ..you're awesome man
Got my '93 fatboy last year: now, of the three bikes that i own Fatso is the oldest and the one i tend to the most, because of the look and the engine, i love the Evo... but for handling, my '99 Road King is a dream on wheels (at least for me)
I bought a brand new 883 in 2003 for 5800 bucks. I was 19. I wish I could find it and buy it back all these years later
Any suggestions on what to mod ? Got my 03 fat boy last year. All stock atm
I had to wring my Harleys neck to stay at 70mph. The DL1000 I'm riding now. 6th gear isn't happy unless I'm at least doing 80mph.
Yeah, but the new Harley big motor makes almost 80 horsepower. 😂😂😂
@@1SnarfyDude What a time to be alive! 😂
gee...my 93 dyna low rider with Stage 1 cruises 80 mph all day....
@@TheWolfsnack I would hope so. It should be able to go at least a hundred. I was talking horsepower.
This Harley 1450cc 0-60 is 6.02 sec vs 2017 Vulcan 900 classic 0-60 is 5.95 on Sean's other video. The Vulcan 900 classic is very underrated.
You remind me of the motorcycle version of Mat Best 11X. Another great video!
Still have the 03 100th anniv RK gun metal blue fat white walls w/122k on the clock just got mustang low profile seat, stretched painted hard bags to match....fishtail exhaust tips and my cholo blanket on the handlebars.........love it "vatos locos 4ever mein"
I'm weird. I like the carburetor 5 speed years.
Same here. I have a 2000 FXST 5 speed with carb.
what kind of riding pants do you wear or suggest that also might look like normal pants? or would you change your pants when you get off your bike?
Love Floor-Boards. I cheat when it comes to shifting. I shift up with the edge of my shoe-sole. It has also 3/8th of an inch edge, enough to lift the front shift tab. Then to shift down, just tap down. Easy. I never lift my foot off the floor-board.
Now the market is showing that you can get a used Harley for only a few hundred $$ for an equivalent metric bike...that being said, at the point I’d be happy or even be able to afford a Honda Rebel just to get riding again..but still, the market is definitely a buyers game now!
I had a 2012 Honda Shadow 750, always ran, even in winter, yearly road tax was $26.00, and I loved that bike
Go get your gold wing then.
Do they sell men’s bikes where you get a gold wing? Jk that cbr 1000 goes hard!
I’ve had 96CI and it never made any noise like that
Could be the rockers if the sound comes from the heads. That doesn't represent any problem, other than the annoying noise.
Our Director of our F.A.I.T.H. Riders chapter has a 100th anniversary Road King. Nice bike. He rides it everywhere. Very dependable, looks great, sounds great and is pretty quick (fun quick, not record setting).
Time to buy some Red Wing boots instead. Can't stand my docs compared to Red Wings.
I prefer chippewa.
@@fredrickhaemker8434 A Chippewa with Red Wings?
I bought an 04 Fatboy on Saturday at Ohio bike week. Sits nice and chilled just wish it had a 6 speed.
I was on a waiting list for a year when I bought my Fatboy. It was around $6000 cheaper than buying a used one.
I have the 2003 Police anniversary Road King two tone
is a 2019 114 fatboy good for a starter?
I’m lookin for a 03 RG black. Hard to find in my area and people want way too much. I’ll find get one soon.
Dub-step, Jesus, & Harley's ..... what's not 2 like 🤟
What is the rpm at 60 and 75 mph?
My g g g G pa is General John black jack Pershing...he was a big part in the military using the harley first to chase ponchovilla while he and the native warriors ran on horses...he was an amazing general and is actually the only general to become 4 star general of the armies while alive...the only other person to carry this title in George Washington...and his was after death...pretty cool story I learned...keep up the vids...be safe out there
I had a 2003 Sportster and it was all black. Never seen one like it since. It’s always been silver and black or blue
I have an all black 03 Sportster. I bobbed it out.
Have an old Sportster, it’s my first and only bike. If I ever get another Harley it will most likely be a softail or fatboy.
10:59 you're quoting a metric spanner size to adjust the gearshift lever. I would have though that a Harley would only require imperial sized tools.
Jonathan L nope. A lot of parts on a Harley take a 10mm wrench. I work on bikes as a hobby and I have a full set of metric wrenches along with standard. My Jeep is the same way.
Fatboys my favorite Harley as well. Nothing like those front forks and that sound.
The Harley Tank Emblem is 100x better than a painted on logo =)
Depends on the logo. I hate the big gauty 3d or script logos.
Fuckin right brother!
The 2003 100th anniversary paint choices, consisted of blue like yours. And they came in all black, black and silver, silver, maroon or Merlot.
And white.
It looks kinda small, how tall are you?!?
Thank you! 🙂
Around the Capitol beltway we only had two Harley Davidson dealerships Fort Washington Harley Davidson and Rockville Harley Davidson
And they were small dealerships
Now the dealerships are huge Fancy buildings and I have no idea how many there are
I got a 2003 100th anniversary 1200xl custom sporty lol
I remember the days of the waiting lists for a NEW HD. I knew guys that would order a new HD every year and sell their used bike for a great price. Of course this type of anomoly can never last forever but for sure the assclowns that were running HD at this time were some of the dumbest merfers imaginable. You have a great product and name brand that has reached premium price and cult status and you decide to flood the market with overproduction.
Damn. Wisconsin DOT must take good care of the roads.
Better than SC and some other southern states. I still prefer to ride in the south. Just upgrade your front shocks to 1" longer or monoshocks and you're good.
@@PAULY-P it's funny you mentioned sc because i live there. The roads are fucked up.
