  • GET TO THE CHOPPA!!! Enjoy my reaction to PREDATOR (1987). Man, was this movie a blast! Loved how on edge it made me feel and the carefully crafted sense of helplessness it created in each scene.

No, the predator didn’t have a human laugh. He recorded Billy’s laugh and used that. He recorded a lot of sounds and voices throughout the movie.
Think of it like when duck hunters use duck whistles to lure in the 🦆. Hunters will often use devices that mimic the sounds of their prey.
This made the predator all the more real, and creepy.

To answer your question, this was made a couple of years after Rocky IV. Schwarzenegger had a great run from Terminator (1984) to True Lies (1994). I don't believe he had a flop during those ten years. He must have had one hell of an agent. Every movie choice was a hit. One could argue that Schwarzenegger assured a hit during that period, but I put it down to some fantastic on-point role choices.

Well yeah it’s ONE thing to elevate every movie you’re in JUST because you’re flippin Arnold (this absolute charismatic beefcake) BUT it’s another to ALWAYS be in well made and written movies for that long. You can easily run out of luck by being in a bad film even with a bunch of star power and charisma. He was incredible but also VERY lucky.

    Predator 2 is highly underrated.
Note: the helicopter pilot at the end is the actor in the predator suit.

3:18 - Not a race thing. Blain (Jesse Ventura) and Mac (Bill Duke) are best buddies in the movie, and Bill Duke is black. It's 100% because Carl Weathers' character is an outsider/company-man/desk-worker/suit, tagging along/watching over them, so he's basically telling him "I have no respect for you, chump".

  • @slchance8839

Something tragic that happened to the movie was that before it was released, there was NO SPACESHIP at the beginning of the movie, but the producers thought that people would be too dumb to understand it was an alien, so that they ADDED it against the directors wishes, before releasing it.
Personally, I saw it on VHS video tape where the first 2 minutes were damaged, so I NEVER saw the spaceship. I got the full reaction intended by the director. Imagine watching this movie and NOT knowing there was an alien until ARNOLD finds out it was an alien. Intense.
Also, Arnold was the NUMBER ONE box office draw during his 80s-90s heyday. Number 2 was Sylvester Stallone and Number 3, surprisingly, was Steven Segal. That last guy almost sounds like i'm joking. But, I'm not.

Oscar, I like how you remark on the good characters. I find the same thing in many new movies, where the studio does not spent the time to develop the characters, only budgeting for special effects instead. It is a huge problem and makes most movies fairly forgettable these days, whereas older movies - even ones like Predator, which are not necessarily great movies, still take a small amount of time to develop distinct characters that makes them memorable. Of course, actors like Arnold are just fun to watch. He's not a great actor, but he is engaging and over-the-top in a good way, which has made him a huge success in Terminator and other big budget movies. He also does not take himself too seriously, and that makes him likeable.

Most of the good guys in the movie were indeed "jacked", but were not unknowns. Of course, you had Arnold Schwarzenegger, Carl Weathers (aka Apollo Creed), Bill Duke (Mac, the guy always shaving, who is in a lot of Arnold movies), pro wrestler Jesse "The Body" Ventura (mini-gun man), Richard Chavez (the latino), Shane Black (the corny joke guy, who also directed the 2018 Predator remake) and the late Sonny Landham ("Billy" the Native American).
    .
    Some interesting facts:
The original "Predator" outfit looked like a overgrown prawn, and was supposed to be played by legendary actor, Jean-Claude Van Damme, but he couldn't handle the jungle heat and the weight of the costume. The costume got redesigned and was filled out by the late actor, Kevin Peter Hall, who was over 7 feet tall. You can see what he really looks like in the ending chopper scene, as he also played the black pilot. In addition to Jesse Ventura, some of the stunts were performed by other pro wrestlers, including during the camp shootout, we get to see wrestler Terry Funk get killed twice, wearing different outfits (One of the scenes was him being shot out of the tree with the mini-gun).
    .
Now for some more good movies with Arnold: Expendables, Expendables 2, and Expendables 3. They also have lots of other great action stars, and if you're a fan of famous lines and corny clichés, these movies have a boatload of them.
    .
Of course, being that you're Australian, have you ever watched any of the Mad Max movies?

Arnold actually did a lot of his stunts himself. He got pretty beat up on the slide to the waterfall one.
"I took more abuse in Predator than I did in Conan the Barbarian,” said Schwarzenegger, according to an interview he did with the sci-fi/fantasy magazine Cinefantastique. “I fell down that waterfall [40'] and swam in this ice-cold water for days and for weeks was covered in mud. It was freezing in the Mexican jungle. They had these heat lamps on all the time, but they were no good. If you stayed in front of the lamps, the mud dried. Then, you had to take it off and put new mud on again. It was a no-win situation. The location was tough. Never on flat ground. Always on a hill. We stood all day long on a hill, one leg down, one leg up. It was terrible.”
If you haven't seen them I highly recommend the *Lethal Weapon* movies. All 4 are excellent and the best start to the buddy cop genre you'll ever see.
As to the guys being jacked. Arnold had a full gym shipped to the set and most of the guys worked out every morning whether they were filming that day or not. Bill Duke (Mac) said after one day of it he was in so much pain that he pretended to be asleep whenever they knocked so he wouldn't have to go. Apparently they were very competitive about the weight lifting...lol.

They brilliantly set up the fact that these men are tough, professional, and fearless. You’re supposed to feel completely safe and protected being with them. Which makes it all the more scary when THEY begin to get rattled and scared. It makes you the viewer absolutely terrified.

The team doesn't like Dillon because he's CIA. Regular military generally often don't like the CIA that much. The latter tend to have their own agenda, and they sometimes seemingly use the regular military without telling them what they are getting into. It's lead to a lot of resentment and mistrust.

This is a pure classic 80s action flick...the Predator sequels are hit or miss from then on in but the 2nd film is a very underrated follow up in my opinion. I thoroughly enjoyed the sequel. (Even though Arnie isn't in the 2nd film unfortunately, we do get Danny Glover from the Lethal Weapon films, Bill Paxton from Aliens & Titanic and Gary Busey from the original Point Break & Stephen King's Sliver Bullet as well as Kevin Peter Hall as The Predator again)....Fun Trivia Fact - Keven Peter Hall has a cameo in the first film (without the Predator costume & make-up) as the helicopter pilot who rescues Arnie in the end....Also Jean-Claude Van Damme was originally going to be The Predator but left the project (after the filmmakers had a lot of issues with the special effects & he was having a lot of issues being in the costume with intense heat in the jungle making him physically sick) to go do the film Bloodsport instead.
I hope you'll do some more Predator and Arnold Schwarzenegger films in the not too distant future.

Blain spitting tobacco juice on Dillon's boots is probably not racially-motivated, since Blain and Mac are good friends. So your other guess is probably correct. He doesn't like an outsider being forced onto the team. Mac goes even further, telling Dillon that he'll kill him if he screws up the mission.

Estas nuevas generaciónes creen que todas las cintas deben ser divertidas y no saben apreciar lo bueno, por eso se pierden de lo mejor, también son más sensibles a la sangre y visceras qué las generaciones de antes.

In the end, that was the perfect description of Arnie, that's what his fans love so much about him besides the fact he has virtually gone down in film history as the king of oneliners. xD
I don't even know where to start with the recommendations of him, since he didn't make any bad movies (his debut in "Hercules in New York" from 1970 was maybe mediocre, but after this he got better), but if I had to pick my favorites of Schwarzenegger, for me personally Stephen King's "The Running Man" (1987) would come on the first place, while "Twins" (1988) is his best comedy and "Commando" (1985) probably has more oneliners than any other movie there ever was, is and will be.

The animosity towards Dillon had nothing to do with racism, and was really especially about the fact that he was the CIA guy, but also a lot about him being an outsider, as you said. Keep in mind that character-wise, Blain's best friend is Mac, who is black, right? ✌

    • @thecocoacouch
      @thecocoacouch  Год назад +2

Yeah exactly… I guess it was an early scene and I hadn’t gotten to know the characters yet. But then again probably could have figured that out based on that friendship earlier on. That’s the fun part of reacting, you ask questions but then when you subconsciously figure them out, sometimes you don’t mention it out loud.

@@iKvetch558 3. Shane Black Was Cast As Insurance More Than Anything Else
On the typically hilarious and deadpan commentary for the “Predator” special edition DVD, McTiernan lets out an agonized groan every time Shane Black, as radio operator Hawkins, lets out one of his infamous “p*ssy” jokes. (Example: “The other day, I went up to my girlfriend, I said, ‘Y’know I’d like a little p*ssy.’ She said, ‘Me too, mine’s as big as a house!’ ”) “I cast him because I wanted a writer on the set,” McTiernan admits. At the time Black was starting out in Hollywood, having written “Lethal Weapon” and “Monster Squad,” both of which were released the same year as “Predator,” but already had a reputation as someone to go to for big studio movies with snappy dialogue and clever scenarios. McTiernan elaborated (briefly) on the commentary: “I loved his work and he’s got a great wise-ass manner.” Producer Jon Davis somewhat more bluntly said: “The idea was hatched - we’ll hire him as an actor and then when he’s stuck in Mexico we’ll make him rewrite it.” What makes this arrangement so funny - having who would become the highest paid screenwriter in the history of Hollywood on your movie, available to use (for free) - is that they never actually used Black’s writing skills (except for the second “p*ssy joke”). “I did nothing on the script. What the studio did, and what they always do, was they get seven different writers, go all around the circle, and they go back to the original draft.” While they weren’t completely wed to the Thomas brothers’ screenplay, it was a solid enough foundation that Black’s tinkering was never necessary, instead McTiernan followed the “Robert Altman technique” of bringing in solid actors and, in his words “turning them loose.” McTiernan, during the same audio commentary, claims that he did concoct the sequence where Arnold booby-traps the jungle, “Apocalypto”-style, after editing together a rough cut where that sequence wasn’t in place.
