Enjoy my reaction to The Thing!! Honestly this one grossed me out so much and the practical effects really sold me on this film. Beautifully made to create suspense and dread.

Over 40 years later and still has the best practical effects EVER.
21:20 What really interesting about this creature is its not a perfect organism, when it took Norris it replicated his features, his intelligence, his memories and his habits, but this ability is a doubled edged sword, because it also copies their hereditary illnesses or genetic disorders, it doesn't modify the host it takes, it just copies them, including their weaknesses.
Ooo that’s a good point.
Norris could as well have heart valve which can not be copied by creature, cos' non-organic.
@@Antagonopolis Awww you right he could have had a stent before he got turned!
Pacemaker is what i think he had, and it rejected it.
super cool point
They did redo this movie (well a supposed prequel anyway) in 2010, with practical effects. Then they destroyed all the practical effects by adding a CG skin to everything because the studio executives thought it looked too dated. What you got was what we all feared, a Thing movie with crap CG effects.
Oh right. Dang, that sucks 😭
@@thecocoacouch I was going to say the same thing. They should've used the practical effects they had designed.
the prequel also horribly screwed up the space ship part. in this one, the ship is almost completely uncovered but in the prequel, its deep in a cavern and they didnt even bother to try to keep continuity.
@@omega311888 I didn't know that. I didn't actually see the film, put off by what I heard about the effects.
Some of it was actually ok
"Me and the dog would be best friends, I swear"
LOL
John Carpenter is brilliant. Right from the first scene you’re confused about what’s going on. The paranoia just keeps building.
And even more brilliant is that Carpenter has states that no one has gotten their interpretation of the film 100% right. He's also a bit of a trolling creator, having not only having giving joking answers, but also giving conflicting answers, just to continue to keep the confusion going. XD
One of my favorite movies and one of the prime examples of a remake done right! The practical effects by Rob Botin are iconic. He worked so hard on these effects to perfection to the point where he had to be hospitalized for severe exhaustion. The man nearly killed himself for these effects
Dayum, see that’s what’s awesome is when a person puts that much love into something.
And he was just a kid....all of 21 or so.
There isn't a remake. People thought it was a remake but it was a prequal to the story.
@@edgartellez604, "The Thing", 1982 is a remake of "The Thing From Another World", 1951. "The Thing", 2011 is a prequel.
@@edgartellez604 This is a remake of The Thing from Another World from 1951.
He did not give him a molotov at the end of the film. He shared a bottle of J&B scotch whiskey. It was his drink of choice the whole movie. Also... I'm pretty sure an alien that traveled millions of light years and also assimilated humans knows what gasoline is.
plus MacReady is about to take a swig when Childs shows up
15:36
Fun fact!
The Thing’s scream actually consists of all the life forms it assimilated. Meaning it’s scream isn’t actually it’s scream but the screams of all of its victims.
Both Kurt Russel (MacReady) and Keith David (Childs) have said that they played their characters in the closing moments as being human. While John Carpenter has refused to confirm or deny (which is the best stance as a creative, imo) he _did_ say that he considers The Thing video game to be canon, and _that_ game (which is about a rescue team coming across the destroyed camp) portrays both Childs and MacReady as human at the end of the film. (It's a good game, surprisingly - reflects the themes of the film.)
So, while you _should_ decide for yourself (the movie should (and does) stand on its own), there is a "canon" answer if you want one.
That's how I always felt, that they were both humans
Its a movie with so much ambiguity but it WORKS
One of my favorite horror movies. Watch it every Halloween, usually with someone that hasn't seen it. The dog was actually a Wolf-Alaskan Malamute hybrid, with the wolf being the dominant trait. Everyone on set was scared of the dog.
I was a 16 year old high school sophomore in Milwaukee working as a movie usher when we carried The Thing. It premiered just a week after E.T. and in the depths of the ‘82 economic American recession, the public wanted a happy alien escapism experience , not a dystopian movie one. Critics hated The Thing, but now they’ve reconsidered it as a masterpiece of suspenseful filmmaking with themes of xenophobia and distrust. It remains one of my Top-10 movies ever, 41 years later. Ps. I know every line of dialogue after seeing it hundreds of times.
Wow so it didn’t do so well immediately? That sucks because it’s so good. Personally a more enjoyable experience than ET for me mainly because of age I guess
One of my favorite horror films of all time. It is definitely disturbing (and gross) at times. But it captures an amazing sense of isolation, desperation and tension throughout.
Exactly why I loves this over other horror films
The anxiety never, ever let's up, and in the end we have no true closure...as in death itself, brilliant
The music is deliberately made to sound like a heartbeat but off which is a neat thing that doesn't often get noticed.
The scene with Bennings has just got to be one of the most amazing shots of the film, so human yet absolutely inhuman, haunting.
Also fun that you hear Windows drop the keys in that scene meaning anyone could've picked them up to get at the blood!.
The dog is named Jed! He starred in other movies too if you want to see more of that pupper!
Also some things I've noticed from going on a mini-binge of reaction videos to The thing:
- The scream it makes at the end is the most human sounding screech it makes throughout the film, might be nothing but I find it interesting, as if it's getting the hang of humans in general.
- In the blood test scene we see MacReady drop his flamethrower along with Palmers blood, which is likely why he couldn't burn the Palmers-thing right away as the fall probably snuffed out the fire at the tip so when he tried to turn it back on and torch it the fuel both burned but also put out the flame resulting in the short 'puffs' of fire it made.
- Windows didn't make the same 'warbling' sound the creature does when he was being burned, so while obviously being assimilated it was likely he was still 'human' and possibly 'alive' to some degree when he was burned.
- It was likely Norris or Palmer that got to Blair while he was in the shack but I saw someone point out that early on it did look like he prodded one of the creatures 'bodies' with a pencil which he then pressed to his lips and the fact it was such a minimal amount of alien cells that then entered his body meant it took a long long time to assimilate him (as he's still human when he starts breaking things). The noose I've seen others also suggest he was going to 'off himself' before the assimilation could be completed but wasn't successful. Those are just theories though.
For ever I just assumed the music was by John Carpenter as he scores all his own films. A year or so ago I caught the end credits and noticed it's actually Ennio Morricone! My life is a lie! 😮😅
@@scouseofhorror104 I kinda forgot he did that too to be honest, and I don't often have the best memory for names so I doubt I'd have remembered anyway.
@@wakadooia Right Wak, you know John toured a few times with his live soundtracks (right near us a few years ago, but we had another engagement on 🤔😫) I'm mega intrigued now whether he included it in the set! It's incrediblely similar to the 'Prince of Darkness' soundtrack.
I always figured the noose was a sympathy ploy, tbh. It's hanging so low and is very conveniently placed right in the line of sight of anybody looking in. Could just be for the audience's benefit, but still. A low noose is an ineffective way to go about it, because once your basic survival instincts kick in you can just, you know, stand up. 😅
"They totally could redo this movie today... You just don't want it to be CGI..." 😐
Blair was himself when he was locked out there at first but later he was consumed obviously because him as the Thing was building a spaceship.
When he started asking to come in i was like "naw it got him"
When you grow up in the 70s and 80s with movies like this, it is a pretty high bar to set for future horror movies. I remember having nightmares over this movie for months. It is a Halloween essential when I want to be spooked, creeped out and laugh, all at the same time!
Wow! That's the first time someone has attached significance of Let's Make a Deal (popular 70s game show) to the plot itself. The basic impression was that they are watching VHS tapes to entertain themselves while living isolated in Antarctica. Good job dude.😉 Cool mug btw.
I remember when this movie was released on video. The poster for the movie scared the crap out of me and this was before I saw it (I must have been around 10 or so). One of the best things about this movie and indeed John Carpenter is allowing tension to build. You can really *feel* the paranoia between the men as the movie progressed. Great reaction Oscar!
Well that’s what did it for me, the space between encounters was what made the movie so eerie. Loved it! Thank you 🍻
If you remember the spaceship in the beginning, it was not flying smoothly, but warbling around. The Thing had infected the crew of the ship and then in the struggle, the ship crashed. By the way, your mug just doesn't seem large enough. No cliffhanger really, when then share that bottle at the end and "The Things" theme music begins to play, well that's because one of them is The Thing and now both. The Thing won, actually.
Awesome reaction 😄 In the last scene Macready is breathing out cold air. Childs breathing is strange, you don't see the cold air coming out of his mouth. So he is possibly the thing 😱
You can absolutely see his breath, it's just not as pronounced as Kurt's. And also consider the Bennings imitation from earlier in the film, which had very prominent breath.
True, what’s frustrating is the fact that Childs still seems like a complex human being, apposed to earlier encounters where the imposters were acting a little off.
@@dosnostalgic Someone had pointed out to me about the breathing. I just had a quick look at the whole scene again on a bigger screen and you're right. When Childs walks up to Macready you can see his cold breath very clearly actually. My mistake 😊
There is also a rumor that he handed him a bottle filled with gasolin as a test instead of whisky.
that's irrelevant. when they show bennings earlier, you can see its breath as the bennings/thing is howling.
Imagine, my friend, we, as young children and teens grew up watching these kinds of films. Lol. Insaw my first horror film at age 4. And you know? I truly miss the first time feeling of watching things like this. At the time you could feel how unique and special these experiences were. ❤️
Oh I bet. Out of all existence I just missed out 😆 oh well, we got Fortnite 🤮
Fans spent thousands of man-hours trying to figure out the timeline of who was the thing when, who did what and when, and of course if either of the two were the thing at the end. This was all pre-internet, so people had to buy their own copies of the movie, visit the library to research obscure facts, communicate via letters to sci-fi/horror fan magazines, and traveling to conventions to meet other fans.
15:03 - you hear Windows drop the keys; the keys that were used to get to the blood
This is a great watch with John Carpenter and Kurt Russell commentary on. That dog actor was fantastic but apparently vicious and only his handler could control him.
Oh wow, that’s surprising considering it did such a good job. Great actor ☺️
Lived a long time, up to 17 or 18 years of age. Damn.
It wasn't a Moletov. No, being an alcoholic, Mac had a bottle hidden somewhere. No, Mac just presumes that if Childs accepted the drink, then Childs has no fear of getting infected if Mac was the creature. The last scene refers to the first scene, when Mac gave the chess computer "a drink." And in the last shot of Mac, he chuckles because Childs gave himself away, and yes, I think Mac has his countermove planned.
Kurt Russell is an amazing actor for sure. He's amazing in Tombstone also.
Yeah I’ve enjoyed everything he’s played
@@thecocoacouch Did you know that Kurt got this part, because he worked a fears earlier with Carpenter in a Elvis movie. Kurt did an amazing job playing Elvis Presley.
I really like this movie, there's not enough of that right now! By the way, John Carpenter, the director, said the finale is open and the audience will understand who is in the finale and it really is so everything is clear and so!
The part with the grenade is pretty accurate. You would think it's easy to pull a pin and throw the grenade, but accidents like that are extremely common when recruits are going through basic training in the military. You can actually look up videos here on RUclips, of accidents like that in various nations militaries.
This film is really great and has many details one might miss first viewing. You may notice every characters coats are used throughout the film, so it's one way of telling who is who. There are many theories on how to spot the Thing, but most have been debunked, except for one purposeful hint given in the scene where the blood test is being given. The Thing's eyes are not lit like everyone else, so you can spot that something is off with Palmer. For Norwegian viewers, the reveal about the dog is spoiled, since the actor is actually speaking the proper language, and warns that the dog isn't a dog, and is some sort of "Thing."
yeah especially with gloved hands in the extreme cold, it would be plenty likely to drop the grenade
15:34 this haunting scream/cry/roar is actually the sounds of all the victims it has assimilated all mixed together. I THINK you can hear Bennings or at least a human screaming during it.
The movie that was made in 2011 with the same name is really good. It is basically the same as 1982 version but it is a prequal to this one with the Norwegian camp.
The CGI at times is disappointing, giving how much this movie relied on practical effects and was praised so much for it. That said, I do recommend the 2011 one too. The ending at least for me was very cool to see that it was actually a prequal.
This is one of the best reaction films ever, we all know what is going to happen...yet the ending
I agree Eric
RE: the TV show with the three doors:
1] Someone turned the TV off. Who?
2] What was the reason given for turning it off?
“I already know how this one ends…”
Hmmm…
But during that scene, he is smoking some weed, and hands it off to Childs. During the blood test scene, we find that Childs is still human, which means that Palmer was still human during the "Price is Right" scene.
This is such a good movie, bro, you could rewatch this over and over, knowing damn well what happens next, it's always entertaining, great film for the middle of Winter...or the middle of July, perfect modern take on Agatha Christie mysteries; who is who and who can we trust, and the ending...we will never, ever know...is Childs the Thing? Or was MacCready infected the whole time? Or were they both still human, we will never know...brilliant!
Oh God I love The Thing!! I have the original black and white classic The Thing but this version is the best ❤❤❤
This movie is part of John Carpenter’s Apocalypse Trilogy: The Thing, Prince of Darkness, and the Lovecraft inspired In the Mouth of Madness. You should definitely check the rest out, they’re pretty awesome
Oh okay I’ll write those down!! Loved this movie
Prince Of Darkness is more of a thinker than action, and went over many of the audiences' heads. I loved it! Some very cool Sci-Fi (hard to describe without spoilers). Theology mixed with high-tech and science fiction all in a mystery/horror narrative. Note that Alice Cooper plays a scary character.
The main fan theory is that Childs is the Thing because his really drinking gasoline. But that's just silly. Mac is about to drink it himself when Childs shows up. It's not gasoline.
Two, many say the lack of breathe is a clue. But, Childs does have some visible breathe. When the one Thing ran off and screamed, we saw it's breathe too. Carpenter said one of the only clues he put in about who's a Thing was the lack of light in someone's eyes.
That being said, I think the intention was Childs is a Thing and the reason Mac is laughing at the end is because, Childs failed a simple test. All movie Childs has been suspicious of Mac and doesn't trust him. He was ready to leave Mac to freeze to death just because of the paranoia.
They know a single cell from this Thing can infect them and take them over. Mac has been drinking scotch throughout the whole film. When he offers the drink to Childs, his waiting. Because human Childs, wouldn't accept a drink if his worried about infection. He drinks, and Mac laughs because one, he knows it's not Childs and two, he just said they aren't in much shape to do anything about it. So he knows, mankind failed. Its a bleak ending.
Though I know Carpenter later said Mac does have a flamethrower under his coat. So I guess mankind is safe
31:23 Was definitely NOT a Molotov Cocktail in that bottle. Right before Childs appeared, MacReady was about to take a drink. Unless MacReady was also a thing.
"Oh look at this, our first idiot." 😂
"What a terrible shot". I'd like to see your success rate at hiting a moving target 😏😁
Also an irony, the Norwegians managed to drive the "Thing" out and pursue it to try and kill it. That's more than our main characters did
Excellent movie and reaction 😄 honestly no matter how many fan theories are thrown out there as to whos who at the end none of them pan out. It really is up to the viewer to decide
easily one of the best horror movies..
it remains terrifying even after multiple viewings because it did such an excellent job of building the atmosphere.
If it simply relied on the effects, which were excellent, it would not have a lasting effect.
But, without those physical effects, it wouldn't have been nearly as shocking and filled with horror.
Great acting, great directing, great writing, stunning special effects.. it's an astounding film.
You should check out the 1951 version called The Thing from Another World. All versions of the Thing are based on the novel 'Who Goes There?' Written by John W.Campbell Jr in 1938. The 1982 film is pretty close to the original book story.
Love this movie, seen it as a early teen when it came out, this a the original Carrie are my favorite horror movies. Plus John Carpenter is a genius.
Wow lucky you! One of my favourites now I reckon.
“This dog is so sus”
and then things went from zero to 100 *REAL* fast 😂
been watching other reactions to this film and I love seeing people’s watch the infamous dog scene for the first time
I was unfortunate enough to accidentally first see it I was 8, walking in on my parents watching the film
It gave me nightmares for weeks afterwards 💀
You gotta watch Alien and Aliens if you haven't already, not as bizarre as this but incredibly well made classics too and sooo nerve-racking!
1. The Norwegian killed himself so The Thing couldn't get to him.
2. The ultimate hand grenade throwing FAIL 🙄🙄
3. You have to realize that this movie came out long before CGI so there was some very creative practical effects showcased here.
4. Mac's not a murderer. Clark was attacking him with the scalpel. It was self defense.
5. Of everything that went down the part that got me the most was when Blair was dragging Gary by the face.
6. Their fate is left up to the audience. Maybe it's best they all die.
7. They're re-making this sans Carpenter and Russell.
8. Another Russell/Carpenter product you need to first time/share with us is "Escape from New York".
FWIW, we don't see Childs' breath at the end conversation with Mac.
I like how you mentioned that the timing in the movie feels right. A lot of movies these days feel like they were created by someone on cocaine with a meth chaser. Their timing is horrible and everything is just smashed together in an unrecognizable mess with no sense of the passage of time nor any real information to provide a sense of progression. Movies made decades ago seem to have a better sense of timing even though they are the same length and provide far more information and time for reflection during the movie itself while still having action.
At the end, you mentioned that maybe Childs does not drink, well there is a theory that Childs was actually taken over by the Thing. The theory supposes that Mack gave Childs the bottle to test him which is why Mack laughs as Childs takes a drink... remember, the bottles were filled with gasoline and Childs did not react when he drank it.
They keys to the fridge? The clue is in the film. When Windows walks in on Bennings being digested, Windows drops the keys. When he does, Palmer Thing or Norris Thing walked by picking keys up.
Its implied childs is the thing because while you can see mccready's breath in the last scene child doesn't have one.
All the tentacles, crablegs, dinosaur head type characteristics was obviously acquired on other planets since the Thing only consumed humans and dogs on Earth since it landed on Antarctica then froze.
Why would the Thing using human taste buds and intelligence, not recognize the taste of motor oil from a Molotov, instead of beer.
There is no clue given to us in the end. We are just left to wonder.
In the beginning, the guy is screaming, "that's a not a dog, stay away!" but didn't speak english
I've tried to quickly go through the comments to make sure this hasn't already been mentioned, but apologies in advance if I do repeat anything.
If you speak Norwegian the film's plot is essentially spoilt in the first few scenes. Roughly translated the Norwegian guy is shouting. " "Get the hell away from that thing. That's not a dog, it's some sort of thing! It's imitating a dog, it isn't real!"
The dog's name was Jed, and Jed was good boy. Jed was a wolf dog (specifically a Vancouver Island wolf and Alaskan Malamute mix), with the wolf part being dominant.
Some of the background scenery, like the scene where they first see the buried saucer from the snow ridge, are actually matte paintings done by the legendary Albert Whitlock.
The majority of the special fx gore scenes were done by Rob Bottin who was around 22 years old at the time. The dog kennel scene was done by Stan Winston, after Bottin and his crew basically became overwhelmed from stress and exhaustion (Bottin himself was hospitalised with exhaustion and pneumonia at the end of filming). Stan Winston was already a major established name in the world of FX so he asked not to be credited for his work on the film, because he didn't want to take the spot light off Rob Bottin as a relative newcomer.
The chest defibrillation scene was achieved by using a double amputee, who the FX department attached two prosthetic arms filled with red jelly (jello), fake veins, and bones made from wax and then used a hydraulic pump in the chest with teeth to bite them off.
The explosion at the end was done using real dynamite, and apparently Kurt Russel didn't get to cover in time after he'd thrown the explosive and ended up being flung backwards. He wasn't seriously injured and that shot is the one that ends up in the movie.
It's actually very hard to hit a moving target, while moving youself, while there's a strong wind. Very hard.
Apparently the husky used in this film was the same one from white fang.
I agree MacReady was gonna light himself on fire and the Thing wasn't able to tell it was gasoline, hence that half smile.
That smile to me was like a “gotcha” moment.
@The Cocoa Couch I think it was a gotcha smile because Fuchs said no-one should share food and Childs just drank the whiskey with no fear. Mac is laughing because the Childs-Thing just outed itself. The Blair-Thing was already in the basement when the UFO was discovered. It attacked and assimilated Childs while was watching the door and trying to stay awake.
0:55 They created the Title Screen effect by shining a light through a fish tank. There was a black garbage bag, which they burned/melted away behind a stencil of the Title.
If you go back and watch the ending between Childs and MacReady you'll see that mist comes from MacReady's mouth but not from Childs mouth in the cold setting which implies Childs is the thing.
Rest in peace to the dogs in the cage. 🙏🏼🪦
there is a prequel movie to this movie that was made thirty years later, it tells the story of what happened at the Norwegian Camp, check it out, also called The Thing.
Childs was distrustful of Mac throughout the movie.
If Childs was human, he would be afraid Mac might be The Thing and wouldn't drink from Mac's bottle.
But Childs DOES drink from the bottle because he already knows Mac is human.
Childs only knows this because Childs is The Thing.
Mac chuckles when he realizes this. Perfect logic.
Took me twenty years to figure that out.
Best to you-
Apparently the crew of the (US?) Antarctic Research Station has a tradition of watching this movie once every year. Christmas or New Year's, I think.
There was an unofficial sequel in the form of a video game. According to IT McCready is\was infected all along, but not Childs.
Good catch with that TV show and the three doors! I hadn't thought of it before but, perhaps it foreshadows the end, as we can decide for ourselves if Childs or MacReady is a Thing or if neither are.
Always intentional those moments 😆
Hi Oscar, keep up the great work buddy. Have a super day. Always proud of you.😊👊
Cheers Mike!! I appreciate it ☺️
Ill be honest, the scene with the dogs made me cry rather than scared, I hate to see dogs suffering, so I found that scene sad 😢
I do think Alien '79 and The Thing '82 share the throne of one of the best Horror flicks ever seen.
🎥🎞🎬✌️😎🌞🍄🚀🚀🥁🎊
Wow you kinda figured it out at the beginning there huh? I’m impressed. I’m subbed now ❤
"They could totally redo this movie today and make it really awesome"......................So, the greatest practical effects in the history of film could somehow be done....."better".....today? Do you commit casual sacrilege often or were you just feeling especially jaunty that day?
One of the my most interesting views of this movie was with a Norwegian reactor, who actually translated what the Norwegian guy was saying, who was trying to shoot the dog. I imagine that we were not supposed to know what the Norwegian was saying because it would ruin the suspense in wondering what the heck was the deal with the dog. Anyway, the reactor said this is what the Norwegian with the gun said: "That is not a dog; that is some sort of thing...get away, morons!"
They made a prequel to this also called The Thing. A lot of people crap on it because of the effects but it is still a good watch. It is what happens in the Norwegian camp. I keep hoping that someone good will make a sequel where the Thing gets back to civilization and has to be eradicated but oy only a couple directors could pull it off right. The Thing could have started out as some kind of virus or infection. It stores the DNA of everything it replicates and can duplicate it or call up any aspect of that organism any time it needs to, which is how you end up with that mishmash at the end.
Yeah for sure, like the alien the Norwegians found could even be another duplicate and like you said could have originally been just a virus.
Yoooooo classic John Carpenter!! Watching now! :)
😁😁
0:49 - Plastic bag being burned and shot at low framerate, shot with a blue filter. Movie magic :D
That’s awesome 👏
My favorite horror film ever. I’m so glad you did this one.
"I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure."
Mac shared his whisky with Childs, the one he'd been drinking all the time. You can't trick the thing into drinking gasoline because it assimilates all the knowledge of the host, and the host knows how whisky and gasoline smell and taste. But yes, apart from the obvious suspicion - Childs wasn't around for the showdown, and his excuse is really fishy - there are really clever hints (you'd have to observe which color his jacket is at which point, but I'm not gonna go into too much detail here) that confirm he's the thing. There are extensive essays online that dissect the movie (who got infected by whom at which point, and what did they do?) and show you how clever it really is.
I wish such a movie would at least come along once a decade. Sadly, no such luck.
So, the original version of this film (1950s) was a lot of fun because the monster was just a man in a suit, also, there were women in that film, and that changed the dynamic between the men since some of them--those with hopes of getting with the women--were more protective of the women than for themselves. In this version the fact that all of them were male shows not just the strong disagreements that often explode between men (even friends) and then a reset happens and bygones are bygones. Then in the moments when men have to be at each other's throats it shows how intense they can be. Women tend to act as referees in these situations.
It was made canon by the PS2 game that follows up on the event of the movie (and by Carpenter himself) that neither Childs nor MacReady are the Thing by the end of the movie, but the Thing still survived. The game turns the story into a stupid military-wants-to-weaponize-the-thing-conspiracy-a-la-X-file plot... Such a farcry from this paranoia-inducing masterpiece!
You have a sharp mind. You understand what's going on and predict possible scenarios very quickly! I noticed it on other reactions as well.
Good old practical effects...outdated yet so entertaining! And super gross in this case.
Cheers!! Yeah the practical effects I love!
I warned ya!! I told ya this movie is creepy (😳)!! The whole premise finding something under the ice/shape shifting alien was too real for me. That’s what scared me more that I could see this kind of thing happening. But other then that your reactions were great. Trust me dude when I say feel ya at 15:36. That scene gave me chills and scared me badly it got under my skin hearing it roar. 😊😁 at 24:05. Cool fact the animatronics in this film were created by the film wizard himself Stan Winston who did the animatronics for Jurassic Park, Terminator, Aliens, etc.😨🫣😊🩸🧬🧫🔬
Oh wow no wonder they were so effective! Yeah that roar was so eerie I hated it. If I heard that in the distance at night I’d probably just end it all 😆
@@thecocoacouch Yup about Stan and as for that roar 2 words hell no run the other direction. Or better yet don’t be there at all! Lol.
Child's is the thing. He's coldblooded that's why at the end you can see McCreadys breath but not Childs.
....I almost wanna say you saw my comment because my theory is exactly the same and only you has been the only other one that's thought of that.
Of all the horror movies I've seen in my lifetime this has absolutely the most disgusting visual effects EVER!! That head spider is just so disturbing. But I love it!! 😃
My thoughts exactly 😆
There is a prequal to this movie. People thought it was a remake but turned out to be a prequal.
Last scene Childs did not have cold breath but Kurt Russel does .Is Childs the THING .
“THE MIST”
Starring Thomas Jane
You gotta watch that
Pleeeease
👵🏻👍🏻
They did a Prequel in 2011 telling the story of the Norwegian Camp - Not bad but they did end up using CGI -
in case you want to know more about this story, theres another movie that came out in 2011, being a prequel, the events that happened during the other base that was destroyes and how they discovered the Thing, and, theres a videogame that works as a sequel and ending from all this saga, its not the best and has some "wtf" things and the plot makes no sense in some parts but still works, and yes, in that game, you know what happened to Mac and Child.
A molotov he was clearly gonna take a swig from himself at first? 🤔
I reckon that was intentional 😆
@@thecocoacouch That was before he even saw Childs. All Mac wanted, repeatedly throughout the film, is his blanket and to get drunk. You can actually see he has got the blanket with him in the end. He's just getting to the drunk bit.
I guess they made it so there really isn’t a definitive answer. The point is we really can’t know or tell whether either of them is the thing or not. One thing that struck me tho was the small chuckle from MacReady in their conversation. Just from an acting POV that was very much a nuanced reaction to him believing he knows the answer. I love that it ends so vague.
@@thecocoacouch Yes. The movie is about not being sure, and the resulting paranoia, and that's exactly what Carpenter delivers in the end. There are many fan theories, most of them easily disproven, but the movie deliberately provides no hints. Even the shadow on the wall of the room the dog walks into isn't actually anyone's from the cast, but a stunt person. In the old making of documentary from the Laserdisc days it is pointed out that the cast got into arguments about who got taken when, something that fans argue about as well, but Carpenter didn't concern himself with. The whole thing is deliberately vague.
I love that!
Carpenter confirmed at one point that it was Childs was The Thing. You can tell, supposedly, because of the reflection in Childs eyes.
And BRILLIANT! A Molotov Cocktail?!?! No one thought of that!! No one I know anyway. 😀
He's never confirmed that. What's your source
You know, we never actually see any proof that the Thing meant us ill. It might've been scared or trying and failing to communicate. It would fit the theme of paranoia being the real killer.
A classic with natural special effects . Music written and performed by director John Carpenter .
My favourite horror film EVER, beating The Exorcist only by a nose
Please watch the prequel to this. It's about the Norwegians and it's pretty good!
I think your theory is right, the way Macreedy laughs when Childs drinks it is definitely a tell.
Also you don't see Childs breath but you see Macreedy's.
Picked up on the husky thing pretty quick a lot of people hated that they were shooting at the dog...until.....love huskies though my favorite dog.
Haha yeah exactly. Was pretty sus those Norwegians were so terrified of it.
Why would you think it was a beer when you see McCready drinking JB all the time? Also since the Thing makes perfect copies why would a Childs-Thing drink gasoline?
Not watched this before?
This was integral part of my childhood.😊
Haha even if I was around when it came out my parents wouldn’t have let me watch it. I can see why it’s so influential tho!
@The Cocoa Couch I was keep watching, lol. So further edit😅: This movie has been redone, it was not bad, but not more awesome than the original tbh.
@@thecocoacouchw8 a min, how did they stop you? They had no idea what I was watching.😁
It's original shape was a super cell ameba, and it's shape frozen in the Ice was of the Pilot of the ship. The Art script goes something like this. The ship is a zoology ship, it moves from planet to planet collecting Bio material if present. One of the containers was the Super cell Thing. Some how it breaks free, and kills and copies many of the other captured life forms on the ship. We see the creature use these shapes, in the movie. It assimilates the Engineer, and makes it's way to get the pilot. The pilot before being killed set the ship on a collision course into earth. "As for what the crew looked like" The ships crew are tall and have many tentacles with large eyes all over their body. If a Squid could walk up right, it's pretty close to what the crew looked like. You will see in the movie, many features the thing transforms into was based off the Art concept of what was on the ship prior to the crash. Nothing the thing transforms into, was from Earth "accept humans and Dog"
The time frame of the movie events, is 5 days: The movie has one plot hole and it's the hover ship Blair is making. The only way to explain this away is to give Blair the most time out of 5 days. Time enough to dig a hole without Snow evidence in the shed = he did it before he was placed in there. So either during the Dog autopsy he was infect by the blood past his gloves, or putting the thing cells in his mouth from the pencil. Or he was attacked in his room from part of the escaped dog that went up through the floor.
Nothing escaped from the kennel, that's a misconception. It only pulled itself up to the corner as a defense mech. I'm pretty sure the crew would be a little more on alert if part of it had escaped. Also, Blair did not actually touch his mouth with the pencil. However, I DO agree that Blair was one of, if not THE, first infected (off screen of course). His little "breakdown" was a ploy to make it look like he was preventing any of them from leaving, as well as allowing him to salvage parts from the vehicles without anyone noticing since he had already sabotaged them during his wig-out. He wanted to be isolated and locked in the shed. It gave him all the free time in the world to be alone and do his work, and knowing a storm was coming, he could do all of it under the cover of the blizzard. Let's not forget, we aren't talking about the time it would take a single man to dig all that ice and put together that craft (which by the way people think it's ridiculous because it couldn't get to space with the parts used, but that was never the thing's intention. It only needed to get to civilization), but a shapeshifter with who knows how many different replicated beings it has stored in its cell memory. It could shift into a 20 armed beast form some unholy planet and take care of business! Who knows, it possibly could of split itself into two smaller creatures to perform 2 jobs at once, but it is limited to its size in mass, so it couldn't just become two Blair sized beings. But yeah, I totally agree with the early Blair assimilation theory whole heartedly!
@@FilthTribeFTP it knocked the roof floor boards out and climbed through, watch again. The script even says it pushes through the roof flooring and escapes leaving behind unformed bio mass. Lancaster's script and art concept shows after Mac shoots at it, the creature divides. They made it more realistic by giving it long arms with semi hands to punch through the roof and then pull it's self through the opening. Now what people think is the creature went into the snow, but i find that to be not the case. If it punched through to the surface, then snow would have fell through the roof from outside. So the area it punched through was a open area room. has to be Blair's room, it's the only room in the movie we never see or get to inspect. The other art concept of dividing is also on Norris. showing his head getting away from the fire. This is the creatures instinct when attacked. Hell we maybe wrong, and no one saw the creature escape. we assumed how can anyone not have seen it, but it was dark and a shaky flashlight.
The dog kennel is a mess in continuity and creature count. Your right, we see Childs fire up at the corner for no reason. I say no reason, because the Dog thing is in the center of the kennel floor. He only fires once at the corner. Lets claim for a second that the scene of the divide dog escaping did not make it out, and Childs burns it at the top corner. "even though the roof hole is at the center of the room." You still have the blob mess with eyes at the center lower part of the middle of the kennel. This is why this scene is a mess, and maybe the actor was told to fire in the corner. It Would be dangerous, to fire it close to everyone at the center floor lol. This kind of mess happen with Norris also, watch that flamethrower moment lol. You will see No Norris head on what falls from the celling on fire. "this is because all of the practical concept effects survived the movie and are on display. So what Childs fired at was a object that was soaked in flammable liquid. The floor producers failed to address there is more then 1 thing in the kennel. This is why the Dog thing had to escape other wise Childs must fire more then once at 2 things at different locations. He doesn't, the reason he doesn't is because the divided one got away. "and he is firing on the blob mass instead. The creature that's on the table doesn't have and long animal human\Dog arms with a small body. So someone let the 2nd divide get away. Or Childs only fired on 1 creature but let the other live in the kennel still lol.
Good stuff man, hopefully you dont get burned out with those 2 big series but the grind always pays off.
Thanks man I really appreciate it ☺️ between you and me though things may change in a big way fairly soon!
