Having had an m1 air 16gb since launch (which has been excellent!), workflow changes drove my requirements to a more powerful setup. I waited and waited for the m2 pro/max to come out toward the end of last year. I couldn’t wait any longer and picked up 2 m1 max 32gb (14 and 16) for me and one of my team at the end of December, £500 and £299 cheaper than msrp. what? No, it's like M1 vs M2: the M2 has better E-ccores, same goes for the M2 Pro/Max that have 2 extra E-cores Also the new M2 Max 16" is heavier due to an improved cooling system, so it will kick in later. Apple in generally prefers them to be quiet

After some time of usage, I found that Affinity crashed constantly, which led me to think that I'll stick to my 15.4" MBP from 2018 for another 3 years at least because that pretty M2 Pro is more expensive than my Husqvarna Svartpilen 200. I'm stuck between the M1 and M2 max. I'm favoring the M2 because logically Apple engineers learned what they could have done better from the M1. However, the $400-500 difference is very tempting. I'm thinking more cores would be helpful but I never have paid more than $1500 for a laptop. Curse words!

06:54 Premiere is using CPU+RAM so it is pointless to compare the GPU benchmark for rendering Where's DaVinci Resolve is using GPU+RAM and you should theoretically see much bigger difference.
Is there a difference in base frequency between the 16" M2 Max and all the other M2 models? Based on the GeekBench score reports, it appears there is, and they are 3.7 GHz and 3.5 GHz, respectively. And does high-power mode (which is specific to the M2 Max) have an effect?
Very helpful video thanks. Currently on a mid-2015 15.4" and bought an M1 16" last year but quickly returned as silicon not compatible with the version of Photoshop I was then running, coupled with the fact that I could no longer run my Virtual Box VM (essential to run an old film scanner which is Windows only). Now that I have new Photoshop, tempted to go with the M2 16" (screen perfect for photo work which is 90% of my use) but my uncertainty is over which flavour to go for. Will probably opt for base spec based on all you've said, except that I'll probably go 2TB or even 4TB as I'd love to get away from constantly having a tethered external drive carrying my photo library, travelling a lot as I do. Anyway, nicely presented vid!
If you already have the M1 Max, don't upgrade. They screwed us all over with that HDMI 2.0 port so they can wait another year for my money to upgrade. Plus the performance isn't that exciting so upgrading to the next one will get you 60-90% since the M3 will likely be using the 3nm chipsets next release. (better cooling and faster performance than the current M2)
Coming from an 2015 MacBook, I can’t see the advantage of the M2 models over the refurbished M1 versions. They are just too expensive for the performance jump. Also, given how much Apple have cut the trade in values it’s not as much as an investment as it used to be
Great video. I was interested to hear your 20201 m1 vs 2022 m2 discussion. I have a 2019 16" 2.4 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9 with 32 GB memory. Could you render an opinion if I would really see a lot of improved performance with a 16 M2 with 16gb memory vs the pretty well spec'd out 2019 macpro I have new??. I really do like my 2019 and am trying to see if I want to make the jump to upgrade.
The price jump of the base model is because of the spec bump. the m1 14” with 10 core cup and 16 core gpu cost 2199 as well. The base model m1 14” had an 8core cpu
My biggest question about the M2 Pros is whether or not the thermal management can handle all that power for long periods of time. For example, pro-level live streaming for hours at a time.
On the M1 Max encode and decode are done in hardware and it barely even gets warm. I run my Steam Deck through OBS for hours with the Mac on battery and it might use 4 or 5% battery for a gaming session and stays cold.
Good vid, covered most of the topics of interest on the new machine. My daily is currently a 2014 15" rmbp. I loathe the port robbing that apple did. Glad they put back an hdmi and SD slot, but I only have 1 peripheral that's USB-C :( And the fact that VMWare/Parallels/Virtualbox can not emulate the x86 architecture on M1, so one of my use cases goes out the window... I'm still trying to justify the upgrade path and the $6k CDN price tag. In the meantime I've picked up a lightly loved Asus TUF laptop to see if pure linux will meet my needs.
@@Thetechchap damn really curious about power consumption on that thing if that or the m1 would be a better buy. Not necessarily in need of the power just a cheap Mac that can run 24/7 or close out taking too much power

Hi I want to buy the 2023 16 in MacBook Pro with M2 max with 12‑kärnig processor, 30‑kärnig grafik, 16‑kärnig Neural Engine, should I stay on 32 g of ram or 64g what you recommend
06:54 Premiere is using CPU+RAM so it is pointless to compare the GPU benchmark for rendering
Where's DaVinci Resolve is using GPU+RAM and you should theoretically see much bigger difference.
could you tell me which model for the macbook ?
Is there a difference in base frequency between the 16" M2 Max and all the other M2 models? Based on the GeekBench score reports, it appears there is, and they are 3.7 GHz and 3.5 GHz, respectively. And does high-power mode (which is specific to the M2 Max) have an effect?
I'm still using Macbook pro M1 and its powerful enough for me. I'll skip this one and maybe upgrade M3 next year :)
Wait 4-6 months and the M2 MB Pro 14/16 will be discounted. There is no rule that you need to buy at launch.
M3 MB Pro is coming out this year. M2 MB Pro is DOA within 12 months of launch.
@@BigJohnson911 tbh they should discontinue the 13 inch mpb
@@kaz8297 Some people still want the Touch Bar.
0:03 it's an empty box as usual 😂
maybe...
What GPU options do You compare? 32 m1vs 38m2
Macbook pro 16 m1 pro base model or macbook pro 14 m2 pro base model?? At same price
*M1 ultra vs m2 max which one is better?*
Whats the battery life on this?
If you already have the M1 Max, don't upgrade. They screwed us all over with that HDMI 2.0 port so they can wait another year for my money to upgrade. Plus the performance isn't that exciting so upgrading to the next one will get you 60-90% since the M3 will likely be using the 3nm chipsets next release. (better cooling and faster performance than the current M2)
Coming from an 2015 MacBook, I can’t see the advantage of the M2 models over the refurbished M1 versions. They are just too expensive for the performance jump. Also, given how much Apple have cut the trade in values it’s not as much as an investment as it used to be
the Urbanears Boo is not selling in the US???
Great video. I was interested to hear your 20201 m1 vs 2022 m2 discussion. I have a 2019 16" 2.4 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9 with 32 GB memory. Could you render an opinion if I would really see a lot of improved performance with a 16 M2 with 16gb memory vs the pretty well spec'd out 2019 macpro I have new??. I really do like my 2019 and am trying to see if I want to make the jump to upgrade.
Please compare 16 inch M2 pro to M1 Pro. I think that's what most people will be getting!
Will do!
@@Thetechchap and the 14 inch equivalents please!
What's the second oldest macbook you have? Can I have that one? Thank you!
The price jump of the base model is because of the spec bump. the m1 14” with 10 core cup and 16 core gpu cost 2199 as well. The base model m1 14” had an 8core cpu
Good spot. Also I think you separate it more from the M2 Air
When do you gonna' to review MacBook pro m2 pro 14"?
later this week :)
You don’t need to do a “ding” every time you show text. This isn’t an advert from the 90’s.
Good vid, covered most of the topics of interest on the new machine.
My daily is currently a 2014 15" rmbp. I loathe the port robbing that apple did. Glad they put back an hdmi and SD slot, but I only have 1 peripheral that's USB-C :(
And the fact that VMWare/Parallels/Virtualbox can not emulate the x86 architecture on M1, so one of my use cases goes out the window...
I'm still trying to justify the upgrade path and the $6k CDN price tag. In the meantime I've picked up a lightly loved Asus TUF laptop to see if pure linux will meet my needs.
I've currently using 2. An Asus Tuf 15 With i7-11370H With A RTX 3070 And An Acer Predator Helios With i7-12700H And RTX 3070 Ti.
Did you get the Mini ?
Not yet I'm afraid :)
@@Thetechchap damn really curious about power consumption on that thing if that or the m1 would be a better buy. Not necessarily in need of the power just a cheap Mac that can run 24/7 or close out taking too much power
Do they now use UFS 4.0?
First! BTW apple can keep their stuff, here in europe the price is again higher so i just stupped buying apple products.
Your 6th
I just bought one but with m2 pro,
Just gained admission into uni for engineering. Have been using a second hand m1 mba throughout school. This looks like a great upgrade for the next couple years! Prices have increased in Australia also :(
hope you are not into computer/electrical engineering... you can run almost nothing of the software required on a non-x86...
Mechanical/civil engineers also don't use macOS. Most graphic software only run on Windows.
How does MacOS scale on the 8K TV?
0:08 That's a courier's blood, isn't it? :D
He wanted me to sign for it and then couldn't find his pen...
They obviously should have put HDMI 2.1 on it from the start however, it's hardly a selling point. Anyone that needs to connect their Macbook to a 8k or high refresh rate display is not going to mind using a high bandwidth USB C to HDMI or displayport cable right?
