Cyclops is a jerk until you become an adult and imagine having a guy at your command that's hitting on your wife constantly, disobeying orders, and wandering off to pout and find himself every 12 minutes and you can't fire him because upper management thinks he's a work in progress (and kids buy his merch like crazy)
It was always apparent that Wolverine was the jerk on the team even as a kid. It just so happened that the jerk characters in the 90s were always the cool characters most kids gravitated towards. Raphael(TMNT), Vegeta & Piccolo(DBZ), Dinobot(Beast Wars) Austin & Rock(WWF)etc.
Not sure why he's considered a "jerk" for being fed up with Wolverine's "lone wolf" bit and Gambit's wild-card habits when they very often put the team (which he's responsible for) and the mission in danger.
Imagine being the leader of a team and having to deal with a grown adult with a short man complex constantly hitting on your wife every chance he gets (sometimes RIGHT IN YOUR FACE) and openly disrespecting you at every turn. Yea, why is Cyclops considered the jerk here?
The older I get, the more I side with guys like Scott. In TAS he was given an impossible job and, for the most part, rose to the occasion. No one else will say it but without him, the X-Men would be a team in name only.
Cyclops was a good leader though. He already confronted these guys up front, it may seem blunt but atleast he always explained himself. Who can even lead the x men anyway, they all had some crazy mental issues.
Cyclops was a passive aggressive bastard. LOL I never caught this. As a kid, I just remember Cyclops shouting "Jean!" every 5 minutes. "Where's Jean?" "Jean?" "Jean?!" "Jean!" "JEEEAAAANNN!!!!!" Lol Take a chill pill, Scott.

Cyclops was always an immature man. He's always had anger issues and a big mouth to boot (which are somewhat comparable to Wolverine's). But while Cyclops' attitude is far from ideal, he is a decent leader. And he knows how to actively assert his authority. So I will give him that much at least.
Anyone who hates Cyclops has clearly never acted in a leadership role and they have no clue what it's like dealing with delinquent, short-tempered underlings who don't follow the chain of authority.
