- One Way You Can Use the Under Jab. This is For All Fighters. Tom Yankello of the @World Class Boxing Channel is back to teach you another way to teach you one way you can use the under jab. What is the under jab you may ask. Watch the entire video as Tom will teach you one way you can use the under jab. The under jab is where he slips and drives it from underneath. This jab is the same position as throwing the under jab, but he is starting the jab from a lower position, but then shoots upwards and hits you with his knuckles. You aren't hitting him with your thumb. To help visualize, Tom refers to this as the coffee mug jab. It's like you are picking up a coffee mug. The key is you are making the guy raise up just like you do with the up jab. You can also hook off that jab. Using the under jab in a fight, Carmen Basilio used this against Sugar Ray Robinson and then threw the hook right off of it. You can also throw that jab and throw the right hand. If you are fighting a southpaw you can shoot your jab up through the guard and counter with a hook or counter with a right hand. Tom then demonstrates the jab if you are a southpaw. The southpaw can counter with the left hand or counter with the hook. If you had a southpaw vs a southpaw, you still jab through the guard. He dips and punches through the guard. You are picking the guy up like you are picking up a coffee mug.

I was once shown the coffee mug jab and the under-jab one after the other. The guy who taught me those jabs referred to the coffee mug jab as the "Russian uppercut" and to the under-jab as the "Mexican uppercut."
Christopher T - Excellent comment. While watching this video, I got the impression that both of these punches are related to an uppercut. Thanks for posting.
I just checked my notes. It's called the Cuban uppercut, not the Mexican uppercut.
Dumb question, but are you aiming under their chin and is horizontal fist preferable?
Cam - A very good question, actually. Coach Yankello would be the best person to ask, but I’ll put in my two cents. If you opponent’s chin is well tucked, shoot for the eyes/nose area. If that chin comes up a bit, it becomes the target. In short, hit for what is available. Fist position, from what I can see, would be primarily vertical.

Bruce Lee even made it a point to have full contact with all of your knuckles in this “Coffee Mug” form. Where most fighters hit targets with 2-points of their knuckles (index knuckle and middle knuckle) Bruce Lee hit with all 4 knuckles for maximum strength behind the quickest punch to throw.

❤ This. I know the under jab as the spear jab. Coffee mug jab is new. I never hear of that one. It is almost like a slight hook.
This is is a great video, like all of the videos on this channel, but admittedly it was hard to focus when I kept worrying this guy was going to hit the coach lol. He got really close a few times and if coach Tom happened to look away maybe at the camera there’s a chance he could have gotten clipped lol so it was hard to focus on the video the first time around. Second time around it was ok though 😄👍
