I mean what would you tube be right now if it was a free standing company. Alphabet was Hillary number one campaign financier. She is a notorious corporatist swamper. When you've got lobbied congressman bringing out that the corporate takeover of the media was to shut up independent. That concerns me.
people reacting to other peoples art. people then reacting to the reaction. People reacting to the reaction of the reaction. I also love how it seems That certain people like women can use music in the background where others cannot.
As a long term viewer/consumer, the most frustrating thing for me is the clickbait. It's constant and out of control. People have become so obsessed with making money off their channel that every second video is called "I can't believe this happened" with a picture of someone with their hands over their head etc etc. Channels I used to respect don't realise they have lowered their integrity and caused me to drift away. I can't be the only one.
@@joshuasmith9350 what an unnecessarily horrible and inaccurate comment. The clickbaiting has massively ramped up over the past year or two, as more and more people seek to scratch out a living from YT. And why on earth is awareness of these matters a competition?! Inclined to think you're some kind of bot, in which case I shouldn't have taken the bait.
I’ve noticed it too. The YT guru channels tell people how to make thumbnails that boost click-through rates, how to manipulate the viewers, etc. Its repulsive. I actually made a video about dramaface 😂. I unsub or block such channels now. If I wanted to waste my time, I could click and then not watch- bad for their analytics.
The internet in general was a lot better in those days. RUclips before monetization was also much much better. People made videos because it was their hobby, they wanted to learn camera work, editing, etc, and/or they just had something to say. Monetization just attracted people who do it for the money, and it also attracted a lot more scams.
As much as I want that to happen and for RUclips to collapse, I still wonder WHICH could be the better platform. As long as a single person or company owns the servers, it will inevitably change into copyright and corporate bullshit in order to satisfy the donors and lawsuit-issuers.
I hate to play the devils advocate here but: Running a service like RUclips is a massive undertaking and is extremely expensive. RUclips is backed by Google who don't really profit of off RUclips (As far as the evidence I've seen presented from 3rd parties so far), because of the massive computing power and bandwidth required. RUclips have a video library measured in Petabytes of storage requirements. Creators rely on the income from Ads or RUclips premium subscriptions, which is funded by the massive ads-network of Google. This is why creators are hesitant (and understandably so) to jump ship. Running a website like RUclips is pretty much impossible without backing from a multimillion-dollar company like Google. At least as a long-term service that is profitable.
Nothing ticks me off more than witnessing "shadow bans," as it's clear it's done to block something but without having to deal with pesky things like proving you violated an actual rule.
They live solely to spreed lies deception and dishonesty, They have no god, The have no morals They have no justice They have no power Only traits they have are hate, inferiority complex, jealousy and envy.
I can vividly recall the very moment the shadow-banning thing started. For a while I took an interest in politics, and regarded certain channels as places to share ideas and debate. I'm a fairly articulate and well-informed person, and so of course those who lack these qualities took great exception to me. I began to notice that I was rarely, if ever, being notified of replies to my comments, and that "likes" would rapidly disappear. My work around was to use the History>Comments tab and just re-visit (mostly) threads I had recently posted in. Then one day, mid-debate, I discovered that most of my own comments would only be visible to myself when I was logged in. This proved to be an effective way to silence me and kill off my hobby. To this day, several years later, YT *_never_* informs me of any reply or like to any comment I make, unless it is the channel owner giving me a heart or some such. YT is largely dead as a place for genuine and/or meaningful interaction, which is sad. Many channels are either seemingly owned by corporate and/or state troll farms or are simply teeming with bots pushing propaganda or pap. Such is life.
@@Raygo. I had a truth channel that I ended up deleting myself because I knew 100% that I was shadow banned. I had over 2k subs but all of a sudden views plummeted and nobody was left. Very spooky feeling at that time, as if I knew I was being shadow banned. Anyway these days I preach about love so hopefully I can grow once again to 2k subs and not be shadow banned although I’m already getting those vibes. Maybe I’m wrong this time. It’s a scared society these days where people are too afraid to interact with what you said “meaningful content”. Sad world indeed.
Rob, a very dear friend of mine passed away last month. He worked with me as a bartender at a beer bar before I went to law school. We both talked about movies all the time, all the stuff we love. He and I ate up Kubrick ideas together, but you were never mentioned. After he died i remembered he had given me a bunch of thumb drives years ago; the first 2 were are his favorite Grateful Dead live recordings, and I was slowly but surely making my way through them. Slowly, mainly. So i decided to go through all 4 thumb drives and the 4th drive was just titled "Rob Ager" when i plugged it in. It had a bunch of your videos, mostly ripped from RUclips but a few he'd purchased. Ive watched you for years, emailed with you even (I had a theory about "Going to the Sun/Son Road" as a connection between 2001 and The Shining), and it makes total sense that Glenn would have been watching you this whole time. He was that kinda guy. Just wanted to let you know that my friend really loved your work, and that posthumously made me feel a bit better. The part about going through the drives happened this morning so this video is well timed, and needed. Thanks again for all your work.
@@timewarpdrive77 It got even worse with the fake beer bug fear campaign they started running in 2020 .... "Misinformation! Misinformation!" ... and the more they hit with it, the algorithms just exponentially attack you even more.
I’m glad you made a video about this, Rob. RUclips has been a f**king joke for a while now. Don’t get me started on those “reaction” channels either. Best of luck with the book and game though, bro ☮️
I'm also so sick of all of the reaction videos(which get an immediate block from me),all of the ads(which freeze my PC [ala Letterboxd{where all of that site's amateur scribes attempt to be the new Harry Knowles with 4/5 of the Letterboxd-ers brownnose and shill every film that comes along their way}]),all of the review videos where the reviewer tend to make themselves look like Harry Knowles knock-off clones, many of the wrestling and horror cinema reviewers that are heavily brownnosing and shilling everything that comes upon them, and of all of the social media influencers who think that both their immensive egos and their useless opinions only matter, all of which is why I don't have my very own RUclips channel.
@@stevenmillan9220 I have to agree one channel talked more than the actual video, paused it multiple times to the point you don't know what the video is about
The algorithm has completely wrecked the search feature, it's near impossible to find the video you want even when you use the exact words in the title.
@@crossroad536 Yes, listen to the dude. I clicked on a cat vid once, and the moronic youtube started showing me a gazillion cat videos after that. Or cat channels, or cat this, cat that etc. The whole catyards. YT used to show random content in the past, now it only shows content that you've clicked on, a variety of the same content distributed by many other channels.
@commandingjudgedredd1841 selling out to only the big name RUclipsrs and following trends didn't help either. I don't play video games or watch mainstream movies at all, and 95% of my recommendations are just things I couldn't care less about. And blocking channels or hitting "not interested" doesn't do a damn thing to fix the algorithm (and god knows I tried). My winter hobby is making YT playlists though, so I don't have to keep hunting down the good stuff constantly.
@@KnowYoutheDukeofArgyll1841 and Google, which was a wonderful resource just a few years ago, is now just a paid for advertising platform, useless for search now. People are using reddit Google searches to find meaningful content or will just use reddit directly in future, for actual human responses to their questions.
I really miss the old RUclips. It used to be a real organic expression of the people. Now it's been corporatized. Everything innovative and popular ends up being absorbed and bastardized by the system, always.
In brief, our communication is being monitored to ensure right-speak. It's annoying as heck when the platform keeps erasing messages and shadow banning more challenging content creators.
@@ericvulgateI second Brave browser. You can log into your RUclips account and everything, no ads though, which is effin great. Not sure if you can lock your phone though whilst watching a RUclips vid, haven't found a way to do it. It's annoying because I often have my phone in my pocket whilst working.
Watching this video is a deeply cathartic experience and it deserves to go viral. Perfectly captures the human experience using this technology. Humans deserve better.
A channel called Channelpup called out Emergency awesome and found out it's a content farm channel and that Charlie has his interns and ones who work on his channel artificially leaving comments and likes to get his views up and make more money And for years people would even mock him for it in the comments saying things like "50 views yet 1000 likes , makes sense"
Here is a list of features RUclips has remove in the past 15 years -The five star rating system -DMing/ messaging other content creators -annotations in videos -adding friends -videos responses/reply videos -visible video tags -the button above the video that would drop down the content creators current videos so the viewer didn't need to leave the page( it was an amazing feature) -Subscription page was the default home feature of the site when the user was logged in. -custom background channel pages -count of public videos on the content creators videos and page -category of what the video was displayed (this was a recent change) -showing the last time a user was logged in -subscription search bar -the change in code so searching for a specifics videos are hard/broken and the relates video aren't even related or similar(algorithm BS) ] -the dislike counter being public -videos used to showcase like/dislike ratio before you watched the video -used to be able to see what videos your favorite youtubers liked/watched/commented on I'm probably missing more but damn they got ride of a lot
I totally agree. What's infuriating is that RUclips doesn't create any content. It's we, the public, who create the content. Amazon is another case in point.
i believe the ads are being made so annoyingly numerous to drive viewers to pay for premium. just about 2 weeks ago ad blockers started to cause the site to freeze up until you allow the ads. i had no idea how obnoxious and how interruptive they were until that, after being here 20+ years. they think nothing of interrupting music in the middle of a song to pump in an ad. first thing it does is make me avoid buying the product no matter what it is. if youtube was allowing free speech and not hiding information from viewers i would support them. but this mess? no way.
i use a bash script with yt-dlp to turn youtube urls into a podcast (also converting to mp3) and sent it to my android using ssh (SSHelper app). podcast addict sees the new stuff in a virtual podcast folder
Rob, I do believe that you have some of the best movie analysis videos on RUclips. You have completely changed how I watch and think about thematic elements. I understand your frustration but don’t let it get to you.
I don' think it's his analysis is some of the best, it is the best... The 2001 monolith epiphany speaks volumes alone. I have been a fan for years now and cannot thank Rob enough for opening my mind to a whole greater level of perception.. as well as for helping me gain an entirely new level of appreciation for my favorite films and cinema in general.
It's not just RUclips. ALL social media sites "copyright checks" have gotten way OTT in the past year or so. I write music and almost every upload is blocked for at least a week until I argue that the content is original and belongs to me.
Class example was the Portland based computer repairs channel 'Adrian's Digital Basement'. His second channel was deleted for "IMPERSONATION'. He appealed, was turned down (by a 'human' allegedly). Then he posted about it on Twitter, it went viral, and Lo! and Behold! a YT mod saw it and reversed the "irrreversible" decision. Insufferable BS on here. And moreso when you look at the content farms spamming the platform with dangerous content, misogyny, etc etc etc.
@@gurriato You may be OK with the likes of Andrew Tate being platformed (strange, given your love of Jesus), I, however, am not. Well bud, let's agree to differ, and I pray that the women in my life don't suffer the misfortune of encountering you in person.
The ads have been getting excruciatingly unbearable. I've got VPN with built in ad blocking now. That doesn't eliminate all ads either in desktop or Android but it goes quite a long wa
FB does this as well, asking 'why did you hide this ad?' and I don't bother giving them that information. They have enough information on my viewing patterns to figure that out for themselves.
Totally agree with all the central points you are making here. The YT algorithm used to be so good that it presented recommendations that were interesting and unexpected but perfectly inkeeping with what you enjoyed watching. Recommendations that provided an almost endless stream of fascinating content. But then about 5, 6, 7 years ago they trashed it and have made it increasingly difficult to avoid clickbait crap ever since. They also got rid of the down vote purely because corporate content was getting massively ratioed and so it became an embarrassment. Tbh I am sick of the way the internet has been stolen from us with shadowbanning and algoirthmic suppression. It is one of the most worrying trends and that's saying something.
Your channels are among the few, rare channels that still put out honest, high quality content. The platform is basically unusable without the browser extension to show the dislikes. Sadly, there seems to be no real alternative as of now and even if there was, all platforms tend towards the same clickbait ridden, shadowbanning nightmare that just pushes corporate content at the expense of user satisfaction. For all intents and purposes RUclips is a monopoly and they know it.
Thanks a lot for not selling out, man. I unsubscribed from so many channels because they decided to pander to corporations instead of being honest with their audience. I love the analysis videos and how you talk to us and not down on us.
My final straw was these popular "Superhero movie channels" bent over backwards to defend Ezra Miller and Amber Heard despite the comments showed people didn't like them and they kept playing the "well we don't know" game or downplayed their crimes Yet with Johnathan Majors with no proof they automatically were making click bait videos about "Johnathan Majors replaced?" Or saying "We gotta pause on speaking on him" So two people who were convicted of crimes, these channels want to play stupid or make some excuses about "They had to release these films" despite the Wb said they don't matter Yet a man who was not only not convicted, he was acquitted after finding out his ex lied ? What's even funnier is how these channels swear they're "woke" and they are against racism against black people yet they completely acted like white supremacists during this Don't forget how much they went out of their way to downplay how much Bob Igor damaged star wars and Disney and pushed all the blame on Kathleen Kennedy and that she "kicked Lucas out" despite he was a consultant on many Star wars shows Even George Lucas himself said this and he loved Kathleen I mean hell he's the one who wanted her as the Executive producer for LucasFilm If Kathleen was the issue why did not only John Boyega but Daisy Ridley say they'd only come back if they only worked with Kathleen Kennedy, George Lucas and JJ Abrams??? And it's not like they didn't know this Bob himself blamed himself in his own book so these channels are being intellectually dishonest They're definitely corporatists shills who are paid to push narratives
i do that and i know thats why RUclips keeps sending a holes to my channel. Im making what I want, not what they want. And i dont care what their opinion is.
What annoys me more is that creators and/or their teams do not do research or reviews on the corpos that are wanting them to sponsor a video. So many 'scammy' or 'only exists via influencers/creators as a brand/product that's actually mediocre as a product' sponsors out there. Remember when Established Titles (scam) made the rounds to creators with more than 250k followers like a year ago?
@@ChrisHilgenbergAll the more reasons why I never accept sponsorships of any kind. You never know what kind of crap they try to sell people. Sponsors like Temu, Raid Shadow Legends or Established Titles are what gives advertising a bad name.
I hate youtube as it is. Most of the good content is either deleted or blocked or on its way to be either one of those two things. Almost tempted to delete this damn account and never look back.
I couldn't agree more mate. It's become a very different arena in the last year or so. I've lost five movie reviews in the last 3-4 months and the fact they're allowed to bully people is disgusting.
Thank god you're talking about shadowbans and algorithmic deboosting. I only see a small amount of acknowledgment of those particular problems and it makes me feel like I'm going crazy since it's one of the most insidiously dystopian things on the modern social-media oligopoly internet.
I feel your pain and annoyance....I'm disappointed with my recent RUclips experience as a small content creator. Enough weird things, inconsistencies have been happening that I feel there is nothing on my end to solve, so I just stop. Things either work as they should or they don't and shit aint workin right on this platform in many ways, some obvious, and some seemingly personal, which is the weirdest part.
RUclips has always allowed these big corporations to abuse fair use for as long as I can remember being on the platform. It's one thing if you're just posting the original work, but so much of what gets copyright struck are completely within the bounds of fair use according to the US Supreme Court, but nothing gets done about the abuse because people don't want to go up against the bottomless money bags of the corporate giants they'd be suing.
Purpose and character of the use, including whether the use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes: Courts look at how the party claiming fair use is using the copyrighted work, and are more likely to find that nonprofit educational and noncommercial uses are fair. This does not mean, however, that all nonprofit education and noncommercial uses are fair and all commercial uses are not fair; instead, courts will balance the purpose and character of the use against the other factors below. Additionally, “transformative” uses are more likely to be considered fair. Transformative uses are those that add something new, with a further purpose or different character, and do not substitute for the original use of the work. Nature of the copyrighted work: This factor analyzes the degree to which the work that was used relates to copyright’s purpose of encouraging creative expression. Thus, using a more creative or imaginative work (such as a novel, movie, or song) is less likely to support a claim of a fair use than using a factual work (such as a technical article or news item). In addition, use of an unpublished work is less likely to be considered fair. Amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole: Under this factor, courts look at both the quantity and quality of the copyrighted material that was used. If the use includes a large portion of the copyrighted work, fair use is less likely to be found; if the use employs only a small amount of copyrighted material, fair use is more likely. That said, some courts have found use of an entire work to be fair under certain circumstances. And in other contexts, using even a small amount of a copyrighted work was determined not to be fair because the selection was an important part-or the “heart”-of the work. Effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work: Here, courts review whether, and to what extent, the unlicensed use harms the existing or future market for the copyright owner’s original work. In assessing this factor, courts consider whether the use is hurting the current market for the original work (for example, by displacing sales of the original) and/or whether the use could cause substantial harm if it were to become widespread.
Rob, you are a bit of an inspiration to me. I love your commentaries, deep analyses, and humor. You seem like a good man and father. Sorry about the trouble with Y-tube. Take care, from a fan of 3+ years.

I really LOATHE it when big platforms ruin people's good, hard work. It happened to me in Spain recently with Ebay (thanks hidden EU regulations). It's 2023 the RUclips auto blocking bot should be able to detect the difference between an entire or partial movie being uploaded and a few seconds from a movie.
@@mapesdhs597 been selling a private collection of a UK based toy line and I went past the 10.000 euro mark and I get this e-mail stating 'open up a company to sell your own stuff'. I declined as it's my stuff I have lying around the house, bought from shops and I have the receipts and I am selling at lower price than retail 2nd hand and you can do that under Spanish law without invoking tax to pay but oh no, ebay say that there is this 'German EU' law now. I declined and they wiped all my 250+ sales ads overnight, opening and running a company in the EU Spain is far more expensive and time consuming than doing it in the UK. Maybe the only thing good about Brexit is that it did cut out red tape mandates from Brussels / Germany - Germany just makes the rules and the 'weaker' countries follow.
Me too. I was trying to talk about the economy! And I wondered why the people I was back and forthing with, didn't respond, I checked the thread in Incognito, and IT wasn't there!
One of the best channels on the Tubes. This man’s analysis on film is brilliant, sometimes it’s really deep reading interpretation and even it’s not the director’s intention, he presents very interesting points of view to consider , specially with Kubrick and Star Wars
Another early RUclips feature that went away was the idea that anyone could "reply" to a video with another video, and that response video would appear under the original video as a little thumbnail. It was a great feature, some video makers would engage in a back and forth, a sort of slow-motion video-based dialogue. It was great for political or philosophical videos, but other videos too. I still miss that feature.
Another thing that's changed as well over time is the comment sections. You used to find a lot more people talking about the content of the video or just having some kind of banter. Now 90% of it is just "I love your channel, you're so amazing!", in one form or another.
I've been getting that from Asian countries - Malaysia, Indonesia . . . never a word about the video but just that it's great . . . the channel is great, etc. I'm sure they don't watch and I don't understand the angle.
Those are Bots.@@spinsandneedles Been happening for a few years. Their comment appears as soon as you post a video. I block them, but now it "hide this user from your channel" I reserve the right to keep their BS off my channel. Best regards.
Glad I found this video. I have been experiencing issues with RUclips lately as well specifically this auto block function on my recent mix videos with videos that shouldn't be blocked. Once they get blocked (since I have a small channel) there laterally is no way to contact anyone for support except for the "feedback function" which literally is useless as they never respond. Will see how much longer I am on RUclips as I may end up just leaving.
Well this video actually showed up in my subscriptions feed. Most of your other videos do not show up and Ive been subbed to you for at least 10 years.
You’ve made some really incredible videos over the years and I always find myself starting with “he’s so full of s**** on this one!” Then usually it transitions into “oh DAMN that’s a crazy observation.” Large companies basically wiping their a** with hard-won concepts and norms like fair use is unfortunately becoming so common. We all hate it. We are all so sick of RUclips, their clamp-down on creators, their trash shorts, etc. Love you man
I’m sorry you have to go through this B.S. I found you while researching one of my favorite horror movie (The Thing - 1982) and your videos about that movie (and many others) have only made my understanding and appreciate for them even greater. Another thing that baffles me, how is your channel not monetized? You provide great value, you obviously work very hard and put a lot of effort into your analyses, and a man should be paid for his work.
As a creator and viewer I can confirm that youtube have become terrible.. they refuse to monetize me after being monetized for years as they say my content isn't mine when it's all mine or rarely some shorts that I didn't film myself I make transformative under fair use. Yet youtube won't monetize me.. they also keep putting premium charges up. Trolling has become horrendous also, you can't even block trolls from watching your content. It's become depressing being here
When I started drawing my comic in 2017 I listened/watched to your various videos about film analysis and I really listened when you pointed out particular character framing, color palette choices and things like that. I think it improved my art! I'm sorry you're having so many difficulties. I'm not surprised. Many creators are having issues. Everything is so commercial.
Years ago I started giving creators of quality content glowing praise as a way to support them emotionally. As a result, I have noticed my comments being blocked. I think something much deeper and control-centric is at play here. Great content as usual, Rob.
agreed...I have made many many comments on YT usually on religion, culture and politics over the years I have never had a reply nor a like and that's because no one ever sees my comments... anyway as I understand video platforms will soon be wiped out by AI...
The ONLY thing keeping me using this website are the content creators I enjoy and being able to leave a comment on their video (if I'm fortunate enough that it manages to pass through the filter, that is). I even got a warning about a week ago that a comment I left was deleted for "spam, scam, or other deceptive practice." But did it show me what the comment in question was? No! I'm fed up with the ads, nonsensical censorship, and other issues with this place - and if it weren't for the content creators, I would have stopped using it a long time ago.
I get told my comment is deleted for 'cyber-bullying' from time to time now. They never provide evidence, they never produce the offending comments. FUCK THAT SHIT
This. I’m feeling like the current has changed and I’m swimming against it. It harder to find ‘good-great ‘ content with the bs algos SATURATING ya feed.
I been blocked multiple times for "cyber bullying and harassment" This year 10 times already and I looked at my comments and no where was I harassing or cyber bullying anyone It was in videos where I pointed out what Rob is saying here One was when a big RUclips channel made a 19 minute video on "the MCU did Rhodey wrong" when this same channel did 4 videos previously on "How Rhodey was a skrull since Civil war" So now if you rightfully call out corporate channels who intentionally have hypocritical views for click bait and content farming it's gonna get your account blocked and eventually banned It's not just me many people have complained about this It's getting sick
What’s also BS is the COPPA kowtowing (yet they still have pre-roll ads for videos auto flagged “for kids”). I used AdBlock and I got a notice to remove it or my channel would be removed.
i got demonitised recently, i appealed with a video explaining that I do not know what crime I had committed. I lost my appeal, but nobody answered my questions. All automated and banned for 3 months. I am disgusted.
And do you know why that is? It all started because of "Santa Inc" trailer. Bc it got such abysmal ratings and gained too much attention. Way too many people are noticing patterns from a certain group of "elves." That same group really hates White people... hmmmmm
Yes, it illustrates that the data is still moving right on down the pipe like it always has, it's just (recently-ish) superficially disabled/masked to suit the complaints from massive corporations for when their promotional shit gets ratioed into the dirt. It's obviously a stand-in solution in lieu of a better one (and there never will be one).
I've been following your channel for many years. Because of movies, yes, but also your psychological Skyrim analysis is highly underrated, I keep rewatching it regularly. Overal, you have some of the best content and for me you we're always the representative indepented creator, entertaining and deep at the same time. RUclips should really appreciate more its creators.
I've been dying for the ability to block specific channels from appearing in my searches too. I'd really like a feature that makes youtube searches work like "old youtube" where in present day I can search for a potentially unpopular video (low views) even by FULL TITLE and it just won't show up. It will be one or two semi related things, then some random sponsored stuff that's completely irrelevant and the video is infinitely harder to find than it used to be. I don't know if it's possible, but I'm surprised no one has made a third party browser extension "better youtube search."
Same thing has happened to Google Search and all derivatives (sorry Duck Duck Go). You used to be able to search for a topic, and continue just paging through the pages of results; now after maybe 10 pages, you'll get redundant results
It's a losing battle but you can block specific channels with blocktube and you can fix the search by just adding "before:2025" to the end of your search to get rid of all the nonsense it throws in there. Blocktube again for shorts.
RUclips is scariest when you open the app on a new Android phone with new account. You get to see the default vids pushed to the top. Every one has some creepy rainbow psychedelic shit in the thumbnail, 50% is Mr. Beast and the rest is all mind numbing insanity.
YT is shit now. everything is "content". YT ignores my 'don't recommend channel' blocked channels. Ads blocker work fine on PC for now, so i don't care about ads
It's almost like messaging and control trumps good business these days... RUclips/Google/MIC used the talent of the public to build the platform, and now they want to be rid of us as the creatives, which reflects the mindset of those who own this platform.
it got bad around the last election. they banned a lot of channels who supported a certain candidate. RUclips participated in obvious election interference. infowars was the first to go.
You bring up a good point with recommendations. I’ve noticed it myself and think it’s not in YT’s interests to do it. If you search for something, or you want something recommended to you, the worst thing the app can do is show you things you won’t click. YT wants that click, but whatever you do to say you’re not interested it never listens. So that potential click of something the algo has learnt the viewer would want to watch is under a load of react BS that the user doesn’t click and figures there won’t be anything then moves away from the app.
The crazy thing is we have the situation where youtube creators have their content stolen by people like sniper wolf who do nothing but upload the original video and then react to it in the most lazy and untransformative way you could ever imagine. Yet those people can continue to do this with utter impunity and youtube does nothing. I can only conclude that youtube only cares about protecting themselves from potential litigation from large corporate media companies, which is why they go completely overboard with someone like you. When it comes to their own creators though, they perceive little or no risk and are therefore not willing to do anything.
One of the things to remember when testing the search engine from a different account to find your video is that the "watch history" and "search history" needs to be cleared first. YT sometimes won't show a video in search if you have already viewed the video.
Rob, I'm a big fan of your channel and I've been following you for many year's now. Regardless of any issues you may come across, I'm very thankful for your work. I appreciate you sir. Keep it up bud.
RUclips is shooting itself in the foot - another aspect is the insane number of ADS that get shoved in your face in some videos. They don’t even let you skip them half the time (it’s been a slow creep to more and more ads and less and less ability to skip them). It makes watching RUclips jarring and fragmented - plus if you aren’t quick on the skip button, it’ll punish you sometimes by playing a 20 minute (!!!!) video. Also, most ads I get are totally irrelevant and do nothing to sell the product. They don’t even appear targeted at me as often I’ll get Spanish language ads and I don’t even speak Spanish. The people paying to put ads on RUclips are wasting their money… but yeah, I understand why and it’s a relic of the broadcast TV days. Back then you had a captive audience. Now, the audience can always click away but the marketers don’t seem to know or care yet.
@@Rezzanine Yes and by "monetizing" the content creators, they gain control over them and are better able to censor what's on RUclips, which is the REAL reason for the stupid ads that nobody likes.
I've never seen you state any opinion that would be considered particularly political or controversial despite covering those topics. You take a very educational in depth approach. The fact that content like yours would be intentionally shadow banned is scary.
You are the channel that originally taught me there was much more to films than what met the eye. For that I’m very grateful to you. I don’t know of any channel doing analysis before you, yet RUclips has always kept you down, I’ve felt. Just know your original people support you and you’ve changed the way we watch/appreciate films.

This presentation is an eye opener about the mechanism, culture, ethics, law and art of internet presentation. As a 3/4 hr presentation it delivers days worth of understanding. Thank you and again thank you.
As a heavy YT user, not even a creator, just a user, for over a decade, basically nothing here is news, but it's good more people become aware of it. This site is trash compared to what it used to be, and I'd go to a competitor in a heartbeat if there really was one. So far all the attempted ones just don't have much content or have no real search, etc.
You’re an incredible content creator and I have been following you for awhile now and used RUclips premium to listen to your videos and other reviewers without ads, but unfortunately times have changed. I’ve cancelled the premium subscription because of the cost and being someone who used to browse the original RUclips before Google, it’s utterly disgraceful and it now works as a corporate service with paid content creators with more money than they frankly deserve. Money for nothing!
Hey Rob, been a long time! I just thought about your channel the other day and here you post this. Good times! RUclips is not how it should be and was once was. Channels like yours keep the spark alive for individuals such as myself. Have a great October, soon be Halloween people!
Another annoying thing is being recommended content I've already seen. Also, at the home screen, there's a bar of topics they think I'm interested in, which I'd like to edit. Nope. You're not allowed to edit your content preferences. And as you said, an ability to filter out channels from search results or recommendations would be great. And what new features we get? - Rounded corners to thumbnails and player. And thumbnails that start playing the video by merely hovering the mouse over it.
I'm using the "Channel Block List for RUclips" extension to block channels with too much clickbait and merchandising, since RUclips itself doesn't like to give users the control, and there isn't a block feature.
My theory is they're blocking these reviews/analyses/etc because studios don't want people watching or learning about older great films. They want us ignorantly accepting of the modern crap being rammed down our throats.
Well, the thing about forcing thumbs down is that many channels are run by scumbags - the kind of people who post dangerous content about food or tech (the fractal wood burning vids are a great example - many people have died following those vids). Anne Reardon has done a video debunking them, and Google/YT - being awful - banned HER video for having "dangerous content", while leaving the actual killer videos up! This is happened on more than one occasion, and will probably continue to happen on this awful platform. Anyway, THUMBS DOWN allows people to quickly see if a video has an issue, as a video on 'fractal burning' might not fool so many people if it has a few thousand thumbs down - many people won't take the time to drill into the comments to see if a dodgy food or tech howto might turn out to be fatal, but that black thumb is a great way to flag this, short of YT actually doing something decent for once and not allowing dangerous howtos.
RUclips has been going down this path for a couple years now. It’s really sad because you can hardly make content or comments (they do the same thing to users’ comments) with an original thought that challenges some norm or conventional wisdom without being shadow banned or censored.
I agree star system was way better than even likes and dislikes. It's even worse now because you can't see dislikes. Hiding likes and dislike was always an option.
Please keep up the excellent work. Your analysis is triple black belt level. Only like one other channel competes but they don’t have anywhere near the catalog
Your channel is a shining beacon of light in this dark swamp that is modern RUclips. I come back to your classics every few months or so. I'm glad you are taking time off, and I can't wait to see what you got in check for 2024. Have a good one!
You can block entire channels from showing up in your search and recommended videos on the home page. Simply press the button with the 3 dots on the right side of a video title and click the option "don't recommended channel." I have used this feature a bunch and seems to work with no issues of the offending channel returning to my feed. Happy block ;)
100% agree, as a creator, my videos get buried under flashy clickbait and big-name marketing that manipulates the algorithm. I put out good work, as do many small creators, but we never get respect or recognition because the corporate mindset took over. Thanks for making this video, maybe more people will discover the ugly truth. ✌️
Good video here, Rob. And, really, I don't know why you didn't do this already, but I think it would be perfect for you to do more vlogs like this here on RUclips, and especifically vlogs commenting about some recent movies that came out, videogames, and stuff like that... I know it's simple and everyone does this, however you are a very unique person, a person that has a voice that has more respect, so, even though the content itself is overdone, because of your personality you can do a content like this and be very well successful.
The first eight months of this year did about double of what those months did last year for me, but so far September and October has been doing about half of what those months did last year and I have no idea why.
We support you! RUclips is 100% in decline and other platforms will take over in time....as these platforms actually care about the content creators. RUclips thinks its untouchable, but it is not.
My comments have been flagged three times already. I didnt do anything wrong or upsetting but they mark it as spam. Dont know why. They never reply or tell me what I do wrong.
The automated shadow b&ing of comments is a big problem too. It limits the discussions we can have and, even worse, it can make it difficult to combat misinformation. We desperately need somewhere where we can speak our minds more freely and not be... essentially parented. The current way things are handled is not good at all. YT is one of the biggest platforms, alongside Twitter, FB, IG, etc. and all of these platforms limit speech and discussion which, IMO, is very worrisome. These platforms are trying more and more to be "advertiser-friendly" and by doing so they're ironically becoming the opposite of why people went to them in the first place. YT, like you said, was a place for small creators and you got to see information in a more "real" way; you didn't see media in the way you did say on CNN or MSNBC. Not only did you see it differently but you had AUDIENCE INTERACTION. Like I said earlier we desperately need things to change.
Exactly. My comments are ALWAYS intelligently crafted, but I've been shadowbanned, restricted, and censored for years. There's absolutely *NOTHING* I can do about it. Zero. Zilch. I don't exist; I'm invisible. 💪😎✌️
I hate it. I was once replying to someone and got the notifications for their reply but their comments were not visible in the comment section. I've also, had times where I post a comment and then seconds later it's automatically removed.
FIY your channel is one of the most interesting of RUclips because of the themes, the vast array of opinions, critics of movies and pther stuff you put. Congratulations

The internet in general was a lot better in those days. RUclips before monetization was also much much better. People made videos because it was their hobby, they wanted to learn camera work, editing, etc, and/or they just had something to say. Monetization just attracted people who do it for the money, and it also attracted a lot more scams.
The best thing creators can do is abandon this crap platform.

As much as I want that to happen and for RUclips to collapse, I still wonder WHICH could be the better platform. As long as a single person or company owns the servers, it will inevitably change into copyright and corporate bullshit in order to satisfy the donors and lawsuit-issuers.
yes Yess YEESSSS🙏
I think RUclips's decline really started after the introduction of large-scale mainstream media platforming. It just stopped being RUclips

I totally agree. What's infuriating is that RUclips doesn't create any content. It's we, the public, who create the content. Amazon is another case in point.
i believe the ads are being made so annoyingly numerous to drive viewers to pay for premium. just about 2 weeks ago ad blockers started to cause the site to freeze up until you allow the ads. i had no idea how obnoxious and how interruptive they were until that, after being here 20+ years. they think nothing of interrupting music in the middle of a song to pump in an ad. first thing it does is make me avoid buying the product no matter what it is. if youtube was allowing free speech and not hiding information from viewers i would support them. but this mess? no way.

For all intents and purposes RUclips is a monopoly and they know it.
Thanks a lot for not selling out, man. I unsubscribed from so many channels because they decided to pander to corporations instead of being honest with their audience. I love the analysis videos and how you talk to us and not down on us.
My final straw was these popular "Superhero movie channels" bent over backwards to defend Ezra Miller and Amber Heard despite the comments showed people didn't like them and they kept playing the "well we don't know" game or downplayed their crimes
Yet with Johnathan Majors with no proof they automatically were making click bait videos about "Johnathan Majors replaced?" Or saying "We gotta pause on speaking on him"
So two people who were convicted of crimes, these channels want to play stupid or make some excuses about "They had to release these films" despite the Wb said they don't matter
Yet a man who was not only not convicted, he was acquitted after finding out his ex lied ?
What's even funnier is how these channels swear they're "woke" and they are against racism against black people yet they completely acted like white supremacists during this
Don't forget how much they went out of their way to downplay how much Bob Igor damaged star wars and Disney and pushed all the blame on Kathleen Kennedy and that she "kicked Lucas out" despite he was a consultant on many Star wars shows
Even George Lucas himself said this and he loved Kathleen I mean hell he's the one who wanted her as the Executive producer for LucasFilm
If Kathleen was the issue why did not only John Boyega but Daisy Ridley say they'd only come back if they only worked with Kathleen Kennedy, George Lucas and JJ Abrams???
And it's not like they didn't know this Bob himself blamed himself in his own book so these channels are being intellectually dishonest
They're definitely corporatists shills who are paid to push narratives
i do that and i know thats why RUclips keeps sending a holes to my channel. Im making what I want, not what they want. And i dont care what their opinion is.
What annoys me more is that creators and/or their teams do not do research or reviews on the corpos that are wanting them to sponsor a video. Enough weird things, inconsistencies have been happening that I feel there is nothing on my end to solve, so I just stop. Things either work as they should or they don't and shit aint workin right on this platform in many ways, some obvious, and some seemingly personal, which is the weirdest part.
It's fair use because we are watching and enjoying the reviewer. His commentary and analysis. Not the material he is reviewing.
Fair use specifies not for profit
@@ge2719no it doesn’t
@@hithere4719 it literally does.
Strange because there are other youtubers here who always take scenes out of tv shows and movies and they seem to get away with it. There are lots of double standards on youtube

Hello Rob, as a former film studies student now mentoring and supporting students in higher education I both value the educational aspect of your you tube contributions and have made students aware of your interesting and thought provoking analysis. Whilst not recommended course material the quality and style of your work provides accessible and engaging edutainment for those interested in film analysis who may struggle with or are not interested in reading journals or academic texts. There's a real sense of access for all who may be interested in film and would be a major loss if it went. Thank you for your contributions to understanding film, ways of analysing text and links to critical concepts. Valued resource and respected by many good to know you are taking it to other platforms will keep following progress of the book and thanks for all your work.
I have been a youtube user since 2006, and I can tell you, its getting worse, the initial spirit is gone...
Man if that's the truth I don't know what is. Ever since the Adpocalypse things have consistently been degenerating.
What happened re ebay?

I declined and they wiped all my 250+ sales ads overnight, opening and running a company in the EU Spain is far more expensive and time consuming than doing it in the UK.
Maybe the only thing good about Brexit is that it did cut out red tape mandates from Brussels / Germany - Germany just makes the rules and the 'weaker' countries follow.
I have been shadow banned. No longer is this platform about serving the customer. It's about manipulation.
But they aren't conditioning people like us as we cant be changed so why do they bother?
i doubt it bro

One of the best channels on the Tubes. This man’s analysis on film is brilliant, sometimes it’s really deep reading interpretation and even it’s not the director’s intention, he presents very interesting points of view to consider , specially with Kubrick and Star Wars
the slide started when legacy mainstream media started posting content. the youtube experience turned into searchable cable TV.
Oh yeah, forgot about that. that was a good feature.

RUclips has forgotten the independent creators are what made it popular. I completely agree with you we came here for an alternative perspective.
You’ve made some really incredible videos over the years and I always find myself starting with “he’s so full of s**** on this one!” Then usually it transitions into “oh DAMN that’s a crazy observation.”
Large companies basically wiping their a** with hard-won concepts and norms like fair use is unfortunately becoming so common.
Your videos are so educational. They are worth paying for on your website and I’m so thankful you continue to provide that route.
Years ago I started giving creators of quality content glowing praise as a way to support them emotionally. As a result, I have noticed my comments being blocked. I think something much deeper and control-centric is at play here. Great content as usual, Rob.
Maybe your glowing praise comes across as sarcasm.
You are correct - we rescur kittens in Indonesia and are bullied relentlessly with censorship and suppressing my videos
@@Fattydeposit Even his comment seemed sarcastic lol but I don't doubt that happened.
@@Fattydeposit”Glowing praise” is probably read by the algorithm as “paid spambots”, especially if it is to multiple creators.

anyway as I understand video platforms will soon be wiped out by AI...

One was when a big RUclips channel made a 19 minute video on "the MCU did Rhodey wrong" when this same channel did 4 videos previously on "How Rhodey was a skrull since Civil war"
So now if you rightfully call out corporate channels who intentionally have hypocritical views for click bait and content farming it's gonna get your account blocked and eventually banned

You can't see the dislike ratio anymore, but there are plug-in add-ons to make them visible again.
So ridiculous.
Nothing for the phone as far as I know tho
And do you know why that is? It all started because of "Santa Inc" trailer. Bc it got such abysmal ratings and gained too much attention. Way too many people are noticing patterns from a certain group of "elves." That same group really hates White people... hmmmmm
Yes, it illustrates that the data is still moving right on down the pipe like it always has, it's just (recently-ish) superficially disabled/masked to suit the complaints from massive corporations for when their promotional shit gets ratioed into the dirt. It's obviously a stand-in solution in lieu of a better one (and there never will be one).
That's because vacs videos were getting destroyed w dislikes
Probably would get sued if you make that, but it is a good and necessary idea otherwise.
Yeah and a lot of people thinks that MR beast is some sort of great youtuber. Like he just wastes tons of money to do stupid things for views
So much respect for you for never having sponsors. You're a legend Rob!
My watch history as well as other lists tell me with some frequency that videos that have since been banned are no longer visible in whatever list.
They're trying to get you to subscribe to RUclips Premium
@@Rezzanine Yes and by "monetizing" the content creators, they gain control over them and are better able to censor what's on RUclips, which is the REAL reason for the stupid ads that nobody likes.

Good to see you back , mate.... They should be paying you personally for the quality of your content in a sea of so much dross
I'm using the "Channel Block List for RUclips" extension to block channels with too much clickbait and merchandising, since RUclips itself doesn't like to give users the control, and there isn't a block feature.
love your videos man, commentary and movie review content, doesn't matter. Much love.
My theory is they're blocking these reviews/analyses/etc because studios don't want people watching or learning about older great films. They want us ignorantly accepting of the modern crap being rammed down our throats.
lol okay Magnum P.I.
Interesting, I always wondered why people think Nolan is great. Turns out, they never watched or even heard of Kubrick, Lynch or Tarkovsky.
Cancel Culture in overdrive.
I think the youtubers themselves should choose whether they want the thumbs down to be displayed on their channels.
That sounds a little too much like personal choice to me 😉
Well, the thing about forcing thumbs down is that many channels are run by scumbags - the kind of people who post dangerous content about food or tech (the fractal wood burning vids are a great example - many people have died following those vids).
The RUclipsrs who should have it the most won’t enable it.
@@princessmarlena1359at least you would know to avoid these. When you see hidden dislikes you would click away.

I started seriously producing content for RUclips about three months ago, and that alone is probably the clearest sign of RUclips's decline. ;)

I have used this feature a bunch and seems to work with no issues of the offending channel returning to my feed.

Hey, man. I've followed your work since 2009. Keep it up, no matter which platform you use.
The first eight months of this year did about double of what those months did last year for me, but so far September and October has been doing about half of what those months did last year and I have no idea why.
How about all the AI generated click-bait garbage with those same AI voiceovers? So annoying 😡. YT is a shitshow
We support you! RUclips is 100% in decline and other platforms will take over in time....as these platforms actually care about the content creators. RUclips thinks its untouchable, but it is not.
Its making a lot of enemies.
